00:01what did you find
00:05the place welcome to watch mojo and today we're examining the 10 essential facts concerning
00:11back rooms to keep in mind ahead of the film's release look i know how this sounds but you
00:16gotta understand it's massive in there number 10 it all started on 4chan i found something
00:26in the store okay what did you find believe it or not this entire thing was born in a darker
00:34corner
00:35of the internet back in may 2019 a user on 4chan's paranormal-based x board changed internet history
00:43forever with just a simple photo and a fun made-up story the picture showed a windowless room with
00:49dingy yellow wallpaper blinding fluorescent lights and zero furniture or decorations all these places
00:56and uh buildings rooms misremembering themselves accompanied was a chilling little paragraph
01:04about the back rooms a place of endless empty hallways that exists out of place and time
01:10it wasn't real obviously it wasn't a marketing stunt and it certainly wasn't cooked up by hollywood
01:17it was just a silly bit of fun that sparked the imaginations of millions proving that all you
01:22really need sometimes is an original idea clock number nine the glitch of no clipping all right
01:35uh that was good i'm thinking we get a wide angle and then we're done all right yeah cool like
01:39how
01:39much further like a little more a little more you got yeah yeah
01:47if you're wondering exactly how someone ends up trapped in this endless maze of yellow wallpaper and
01:52office carpeting the answer lies in video game logic gamers are well acquainted with no clipping which
01:59is a frustrating glitch where your character suddenly falls through the solid floor or walks through the
02:04wall usually resulting in an eerie visual of being outside the game world the back room's lore
02:10ingeniously adopts this digital concept and applies it to the real world that's what i'm trying to figure out
02:23keep up it only gets better according to the mythos if you step the wrong way lean against a
02:30compromised wall or simply experience a random glitch in the fabric of reality you'll no clip out of
02:36bounds one second you're just walking down the street and the next you've slipped through the
02:41cracks of existence into the back rooms so what you want to do is you want to find yourself a
02:46nice solid
02:46wall like this one and you just got to come at it from the right angle i think let's go
02:52for it
02:52oh and we are in the back rooms very exciting stuff number eight the horror of liminal spaces
03:11don't expect traditional scares in this flick the true terror of the back rooms relies heavily on the
03:17aesthetic of liminal space these are usually everyday areas that seem just a little bit
03:22off usually because they're devoid of life think abandoned shopping malls long hotel hallways or empty
03:29highways at 3am i don't know why we do this they never seem to come when we're waiting to bash
03:35their
03:35brains out with a pig it's futile yeah they are places meant for moving not for staying so the horror
03:45here
03:45will be purely psychological mostly more on that in a second by taking these familiar environments
03:52and presenting them as unnaturally empty quiet and sprawling it triggers a profound sense of dread
03:58it's that uneasy feeling in your gut telling you that something is wrong even though you don't know
04:03what it is good morning macro data refinement hi mr milchek mark could i have a word number seven
04:12the wiki lore explored infinite levels
04:26while the original 4chan post was fun enough the internet took the idea and ran with it
04:32over the years dedicated fans on subreddits and massive wiki pages built a sprawling universe
04:39featuring thousands of distinct levels think of it as an infinite elevator ride these floors range from
04:45the dark concrete industrial basements of level one to seemingly endless indoor swimming pools and even
04:52entire abandoned cities each level comes complete with its own specific environmental hazards survival
04:59difficulties and unwritten rules while the movie probably won't be exploring all 6 000 fan-made floors
05:06knowing that the fandom expanded this universe into a multi-layered purgatory gives you a real
05:11appreciation for its scale and sense of collaboration
05:22number six the frightening entities
05:25all right so i'm a guy in the back rooms with a hazmat suit and i'm about to show how
05:31we capture
05:31smilers we told you it would be mostly psychological well this is why in the very beginning the terror of
05:39the
05:39back rooms focused almost entirely on the weirdness that said its final line does hint at something
05:45dangerous being in the back rooms with you as the wikis expanded so too did this idea of the something
05:52enter the entities
06:04these are a series of creepy monsters that hunt the wanderers who are unfortunate enough to no clip
06:09the internet lore is packed with horrifying creatures from the smilers that lurk in the pitch black with
06:15their glowing teeth to the party goers the smart creatures that trick their victims into joining their
06:21gruesome celebrations it's unclear how much the film will lean into the monster angle but expect at
06:27least a little something
06:35number five kane pixels hello
06:42hey guys
06:47what is this
06:48this isn't just any movie banking on a fun internet phenomenon this has some serious talent and passion
06:54behind it on january 7 2022 kane parsons uploaded a video called the back rooms found footage on his
07:01youtube channel kane pixels the 16 year old high school student loved the idea of the back rooms and
07:08started messing around on blender and adobe after effects to create a short film
07:12okay okay
07:18what the hell his passion project was so masterfully executed that it racked up insane views completely
07:26revitalized the creepypasta and even caught the eye of hollywood heavyweights a24 got in touch and asked
07:33him to make a movie and by agreeing parsons became the youngest feature director in a24's prestigious
07:40history being just 17 when the project was announced he ended up directing the movie during
07:45his summer vacation yeah i've been using blender for a few years the 3d program what would it be like
07:50to actually move the camera around in that space and actually investigate it a little bit more and
07:55it wasn't designed i didn't even know if it was gonna be a short film at first it was kind
07:57of just
07:57almost like a the very first shot was an isolated vfx test but it was very much coming from a
08:02place
08:02of just like scratching the itch of why the does this picture make my brain feel so strange why does
08:08it feel like a place that i've been in before number four the cane pixels lore
08:26if you're a hardcore fan of the wikis you'll probably want to adjust your expectations
08:32cane pixels basically introduced his own streamlined canon and ignored all the extra fluff
08:37and that seems to be what a24 is leaning into instead of a natural dimension with thousands of
08:43levels and factions cane's lore takes a more sci-fi approach
09:01in this universe a shadowy research company called async opened a portal to the back rooms
09:07which they call the complex on october 17 1989 the focus remains tightly on the original yellow maze
09:15and its architectural anomalies rather than a whole encyclopedia of monsters or a dictionary full of
09:21lore don't expect smilers or party goers in the film because they ain't gonna be here
09:26i don't know where the back rooms picture was taken
09:41number three the real world location was finally found my conclusion was that it was probably a
09:47furniture store but i couldn't say that for sure because we still didn't know where the back room's
09:52picture was taken but now we found it that's right this isn't clickbait we actually found the
09:59back rooms photo this time for years the origin of that iconic 4chan photograph was the holy grail of
10:05internet mysteries it felt like a cursed image that just spawned out of nowhere but never underestimate
10:11the power of highly motivated internet sleuths and there was another photo on the webpage where the
10:16back room's photo came from this is the first alternate view we've ever gotten of this room in
10:222024 a discord community finally tracked down the real world location of level zero it turns out the
10:29picture wasn't an elaborate 3d render or a secret government facility it was a hobby town in oshkosh wisconsin
10:37the snapshot was taken all the way back in 2002 when the second story was being renovated to make an
10:43rc
10:44race track funnily enough the movie seems to be honoring this piece of history as it takes place
10:50inside an empty furniture store i found something in the store okay number two the surprising plot of the
11:02824 movie hello you might be wondering how you turn an endless walking simulator into a compelling
11:14two-hour movie well it's not just about someone wandering aimlessly until they go crazy the 824
11:21film anchors the wild lore with a deeply human and emotional core starring incredible talents like
11:27chiwetel ejiofor and renata reintseva the plot actually follows a dedicated therapist whose
11:33patient mysteriously vanishes into this liminal dimension i'm not saying i don't believe you
11:39okay i'm gonna come back here with proof driven by guilt and duty she is forced to plunge into the
11:45unknown herself to save him it's a brilliant way to add stakes and a firm narrative drive to a concept
11:51that is normally just about pure atmosphere blending fun sci-fi mystery with a tense rescue mission
11:57all these rooms this place builds them
12:03it's like a maze it just goes on and on
12:07if you love games be sure to check out watchmojo's new game terrible influence just launched for

12:23i can make an apology video oh you so would click on the link in the description to check
12:28out the game and be the first to play terrible influence number one a historic win for internet
12:35storytelling i don't understand what is this
12:43let's just talk about the sheer cultural significance of this release
12:47the backrooms movie represents a landmark moment in modern entertainment produced by
12:52legendary horror veterans like james wan and sean levy and impressively financed for under 10 million
12:58dollars it's a huge victory for grassroots creativity can anybody hear me hello
13:12this release proves to hollywood that bottom-up crowdsourced internet lore can absolutely be taken
13:18seriously as high concept cinema it's the ultimate cinderella story for the digital age demonstrating how
13:24a teenager with a laptop a viral video and a weird little creepypasta from a message board can quite
13:30literally take over the world if this movie is a hit the internet and all its crazy stories will be
13:36considered fair game for the big screen treatment i very cautiously sort of developed this project over
13:42a number of years and until we have now this more human first sort of character driven intimate version
13:48of that world do you plan on seeing the movie or are you just a fan of the lore let
13:53us know in the comments
