00:00Anti-ice protests outside an immigrant detention center in New Jersey are growing violent.
00:04Yesterday marked the fifth day of demonstrations in front of Delaney Hall in Newark.
00:09Protesters were filmed grappling with officers over plastic barriers that
00:12demonstrators were attempting to use to block a large truck from leaving the facility.
00:17The Department of Homeland Security posted about the incident, quote,
00:20these rioters have obstructed law enforcement operations, a felony and a crime.
00:24Local police have refused to answer calls to help our law enforcement.
00:27We will not allow violent rioters to slow ICE down.
00:30Law and order will be restored.
00:32Over the holiday weekend, protesters started gathering outside the center,
00:36many of them wearing keffiyeh scarves and waving Antifa flags.
00:39At the same time, hundreds of detainees inside reportedly went on a hunger and labor strike
00:44to protest conditions at the 1,000-bed facility.
00:48Now, I should note here that Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen refuted those claims,
00:52saying there's no hunger strike taking place, and he said, quote,
00:55quote, no subprime conditions.
00:57On Monday, New Jersey Governor Mikey Sherrill got in on the action and joined protesters.
01:02DHS shrugged that off as a political stunt.
