00:03Earth is often called the blue planet all because of our world's vast oceans however now experts say that might
00:09not be the case for long as satellite imaging has revealed they're turning green this discovery is the result of
00:1520 years worth of data and experts from both the US and the UK say it's likely due to global
00:20warming but not how you might imagine science alert reports that phytoplankton numbers are increasing creatures which use chlorophyll in
00:27their process of photosynthesis and while this phenomenon might be
00:29wild to watch it's not necessarily good for our planet's ecosystems that's because their populations have a direct negative impact
00:36on the oxygen levels of the ocean water around them when their numbers surge they can cause what are called
00:41hypoxic dead zones or areas where the ocean water is depleted of O2 choking any sea creatures that enter so
00:47why are their numbers booming so much that it's changing the ocean's color well phytoplankton like CO2 and warmer waters
00:54and our planet is rapidly heating due to CO2 from human industry meaning we're effectively creating a perfect environment
00:59environment for these ocean green fires to thrive
