00:00I'm Dan Graney. I wrote the episode of The Simpsons that predicted the Trump presidency.
00:04Now I'm running for president. It sounds crazy, even to me, but it's true. Stay with me. Honestly,
00:11I've had a lot of advantages. I grew up in a rich suburb, went to private school, and then Harvard.
00:16Twice. But despite my good fortune, I've always felt connected to all Americans. My father was
00:21a New Deal Democrat, a World War II veteran, and a doctor. My mother was a nurse before she became
00:26a mother, and she saw the shared humanity in everyone. Their values shaped me, even if I
00:31followed a different path. Along the way, I wrote an episode of The Simpsons set in a future where
00:35Donald Trump had been president and run the country into a ditch. I wasn't thrilled when it came true,
00:40but there wasn't much I could do about it. Then came January 6th. Then the Supreme Court's
00:45obstruction of justice in the January 6th case. Then Trump's second inauguration and the photo
00:50with the ass-kissing billionaires. It disgusted me. I saw our leaders bowing down. I thought
00:55somebody needed to stand up. And since I had a sort of claim to see the future, I bought a
01:00profit
01:00costume and predicted Trump's fall. And that felt good. It felt better to be fighting to save America
01:06than hoping somebody else would do it. So I decided to go all in and run for president. It's a
01:11big
01:11swing, but I think it's the way I can have the most impact. If we're going to return to democracy,
01:16we need to restore the rule of law, starting with reforming the Supreme Court and insisting on
01:21accountability for Trump administration lawbreaking. If we don't impose consequences now,
01:25we can look forward to it happening again. And as we restore our democracy, I will pursue policies
01:31that reflect our shared values and needs, including universal healthcare and the Green New Deal. To do
01:36this, I'm running as a progressive Republican in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Rosso.
01:41Restoring democracy is going to take the united American people, and that means talking to
01:45everybody. Running as a progressive Republican gives me a way to start building a coalition to
01:50restore democracy. And the lane isn't exactly crowded. It's a long shot, but I see a future where
01:56Trumpism has been defeated, our polarization is moderated, and we create an America that works
02:01for all. And I have a pretty good track record on seeing the future.
