00:00Artificial intelligence already touches many areas of our lives
00:04and affects decisions that shape human coexistence.
00:09It is also dramatically changing how war is waged.
00:15Magnifica Humanitas was born from listening, like Leo XIII did.
00:21I've listened to scientists and engineers
00:24who work with sincere enthusiasm and technologies
00:27capable of alleviating immense suffering,
00:30to political leaders and public officials
00:33who have perseveringly sought just rules,
00:38to parents and teachers who are deeply concerned
00:41for the future of younger generations.
00:45Other very troubling voices have also reached me
00:49about increasingly autonomous weapons systems,
00:53practically beyond any human reach to govern them effectively.
00:57I hear very troubling accounts of algorithms
01:01that can block access to health care, employment, and security
01:06on the basis of data tainted by prejudice and injustice.
01:12And I've heard the silence of those who have no voice
01:15when decisions are made,
01:18decisions likely to generate new forms of exclusion and suffering.
01:23From this listening matured a disturbing conviction
01:27expressed in Magnifica Humanitas.
01:30Artificial intelligence needs to be disarmed.
01:36The word is strong, I know,
01:38but deliberately chosen because this moment needs words
01:42capable of attracting attention,
01:44awakening consciences,
01:46and indicating paths forward for humanity.
01:51In a similar sense,
01:53artificial intelligence now demands to be disarmed,
01:57freed from logics that turn it into an instrument
02:00of domination, exclusion, and death.
02:05Artificial intelligence can be a construction site of history
02:09from within a horizon of communion
02:11in which technical progress learns to serve human life.
02:17Let's not fear artificial intelligence,
02:20but constantly keep the question of the human in play.
02:25We cannot be careless with our most powerful technical instruments.
02:30True development, says St. Paul VI,
02:35always concerns each man and the whole man.
02:39Each means that no person can be left at the margins
02:42of digital transformation.
02:45Whole means that no one can be reduced to productivity,
02:49to cognitive performance, or to mere data.
02:53All right, thank you very much.
