00:00There is a lot of uncertainty in the globe right now, so what are some
00:04certainties within the Taiwan and Canadian relationship? Right now we've
00:09been here for 40 years. We're celebrating the 40th anniversary of
00:13the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei. So we've had some stability up until now
00:18and there's no reason to believe that we can't keep going from strength to
00:22strength and have an excellent future ahead of us. Things that I expect
00:30we'll maintain is that we'll have a strong degree of economic
00:33complementarity. The things that Canada is good at can benefit from input from
00:38Taiwan and vice versa. I can be sure that the foundations on which we've built this
00:43relationship are very likely to continue. We have shared values. Both Canada and
00:48Taiwan value our democracy, the rule of law, and I think that's going to
00:54maintain going forward. The human rights, the rule of law, these things are going to
00:59continue. With all that in mind, with all of what's going on in Canada and Taiwan,
01:05what do you hope to achieve in your time here? I mean we want to keep deepening our
01:11understanding of each other's markets. Already Taiwanese people, I mean we have a
01:18lot of people-to-people relations. That's what it's based on. We estimate we have
01:2160,000 Canadians living in Taiwan from the from our passport and our consular
01:27services. From that, I would really love for Taiwanese people to know more about
01:32Canada, to think more about Canada, to think about Canada as a source for
01:36technology, for innovation, and for energy. I'd like business leaders to think about
01:43Canada when they think about a place that is stable, predictable, and reliable, trusted
01:50business partner. I would also like to deepen our people-to-people links in the
01:55indigenous space and in fact next month we have a group coming for a seminar on
02:01indigenous law to Hualien. So Taiwan is Canada's sixth largest trading partner in
02:08the Asia-Pacific region. You mentioned quite a number of sectors there. I want
02:13to ask what about clean energy do you think Taiwan can learn or adapt from or
02:18use the most? That is a question a lot of Taiwanese are asking about now looking at
02:22the crisis in Iran and the impact that has had on will Taiwan have energy
02:27security. So what is going on in that sector? You know I think since 2016 or so
02:34Taiwan has been connecting internationally including with Canada and
02:38we've been focusing on providing technologies and ideas in clean energy.
02:44You'll see in particular in the wind energy some of Canada's largest
02:48investments in all of Asia are here in Taiwan in the offshore wind sector. We are
02:53also sharing Canadian advice and technology and experience in some new areas
02:58like geothermal. So solar wind geothermal it is also a natural partner when we're
03:05looking to diversify the number of countries that we trade with Taiwan can
03:10be looking to diversify this source of supply on conventional energy which is
03:16where the LNG picture comes in and in fact we have several LNG projects that are
03:22coming online in the next five to six years that are specifically targeting to
03:29export to Asia.
