00:04There's a heat wave, there's a heat wave.
00:06There is a heat wave.
00:07All right.
00:07Anything new in Iran?
00:10We're still a work in progress.
00:11As I said, we thought we might have some news last night, maybe today.
00:16I wouldn't read too much into it, it takes a little while to hear back.
00:19So we have what I think is a pretty solid thing on the table in terms of
00:23their ability to open up the straights, get the straights open,
00:26enter into a very real, significant, time-limited negotiation on the nuclear matters.
00:31And hopefully we can pull it off.
00:32It has a lot of support in the Gulf, has a lot of support globally.
00:36Every country that we've walked through it understands it's not just very reasonable,
00:39but it's the right thing for the world to get done.
00:41As the president said, he's not in a hurry.
00:43He's not going to make a bad deal.
00:44I mean, the president's not going to make a bad agreement.
00:47So let's see what happens.
00:49We're going to give diplomacy every chance to succeed before we explore the alternatives.
00:53What's the holdup right now?
00:54Is there something that needs to be done?
00:55It's just a response.
00:56I mean, when you get down to some of these things, you've got to hear back and it takes
00:59the Iranian system a little while longer to get back.
01:04So like I look, the president's not going to make a bad deal.
01:06He's just not.
01:07This issue, no one has done more and no one has been more serious about the threat of
01:13a nuclear Iran than President Trump has been.
01:15And so I'm very confident that we should all be very confident that we're not going to
01:18have a, we're either going to have a good agreement or we're going to have to deal with it another
01:21way.
01:21We'd prefer to have a good agreement.
01:23What about Lebanon?
01:24Is Lebanon going to be part of a deal?
01:26Well, Lebanon, we're working on separately with Lebanon.
01:28We are engaged now.
01:29We have a 45 day ceasefire.
01:31We've had weekly meetings now and ongoing daily engagements between the government of Lebanon
01:36and Israel.
01:37The problem is not Lebanon and Israel, the problem is Hezbollah.
01:40Just last night, Hezbollah put out a statement calling for the overthrow of the Lebanese government.
01:45And it just reminds you of who you are dealing with here.
01:47By the way, an Iranian proxy, 100% Iranian proxy.
01:50And as long as Lebanon exists with armaments, as long as an armed Lebanon, as long as an
01:56armed Hezbollah exists, it's going to be hard to achieve peace in Lebanon because they're
02:01victimizing the people of Lebanon.
02:03They're not just attacking Israel.
02:04They are victimizing the people of Lebanon who are paying a tremendous price because of
02:09Hezbollah.
02:12But we're working that track with the Lebanese government and the Israeli government, and
02:16we've made some good progress there, an extended ceasefire, a path forward.
02:19We're going to continue to work on that.
02:21Hezbollah is a terrorist group.
02:22What can I tell you?
02:23Would there be an understanding that Israel wouldn't strike Lebanon as part of the
02:26Well, Israel always has a right to protect itself.
02:29Every country in the world does.
02:30And so if Hezbollah is going to launch missiles or launches missiles at them, Israel has every
02:34right to respond to that or to prevent that from happening.
02:36That's always been understood.
02:38It's being understood during the ceasefire, and now in Lebanon, and it'll be understood
02:42beyond that.
02:43What did you make of the question you got yesterday on racist comments?
02:48I don't know who he was talking about, but I figured, I assumed that he was talking about
02:52people posting stuff online.
02:54I don't even know.
02:54Some of those could be a troll.
02:56It could be a bot.
02:56I don't know.
02:57So that's why I asked him specifically, can you tell me what you're talking about and who
03:00you're talking about?
03:01He didn't have a specific example, but the bottom line is that in the modern era, you go online
03:07and there are people saying all kinds of crazy stuff online.
03:09I don't even know if they're real people or who they are.
03:11So, but I didn't know where he was coming from.
03:13I think there's something that was reposted by the president where he was talking about
03:16India being...
03:18Well, I gave him a chance to tell me that.
03:19That's not what he said.
03:20The president loves India.
03:22He said it last night.
03:23I don't know.
03:23Were you guys there when he called in for the event last night, the 250?
03:26The president's a big fan of India, a big fan of Prime Minister Modi.
03:29I wouldn't be here if the president didn't want me to be here.
03:32He cares.
03:32He wouldn't have sent someone like Sergio to be our ambassador, someone who's very close
03:36to the president.
03:37So, but I gave that reporter a chance to tell me who he was referring to, and he didn't.
03:42So I just assumed he's talking just about random voices out there.
03:45I mean, people say stupid stuff all the time on social media and every country in the world,
03:49unfortunately.
03:50Can I ask you about Pakistan, the role that Pakistan has?
03:53Do the Indians voice any concern to you?
03:55What do you tell them?
03:56I mean, look, they're concerned about the things they're always concerned about, obviously.
04:00India is always pointing to the fact that there are armed terrorist groups operating from
04:04Pakistani territory that target India.
04:06They're always concerned about that.
04:07But as far as the role they played as a mediator and a facilitator in the Iran situation, I've
04:13never came up.
04:14I don't think they would complain about that.
04:16I mean, their issues with Pakistan are different.
04:19Talk about the Taj Mahal doing there.
04:22I've never been there.
04:22I heard the only one I ever knew about was the one in New Jersey that the president used
04:26to have.
04:27Have you been to that one?
04:28No, look, it's one of the wonders of the world.
04:30I think it's important to show respect to the culture of the countries that you visit.
04:35We have a gap in our schedule because the quad meeting couldn't happen until tomorrow.
04:40So it was a good opportunity to see some of the cultural sites here and pay respect to
04:45this country.
04:45I mean, there's so much to see here.
04:47We're in such a big country with a lot of diversity and a tremendous history.
04:52So it'll be a good opportunity to see something that is iconic for the country.
04:56Okay?
04:57Thanks very much.
04:57All right, guys.
04:58Are you guys going to that or no?
05:01Apparently, it's closed press.
05:02If you want to take us...
05:03Well, I don't think they let us have press coverage there, right?
05:05But they can see it.
05:06Have you guys ever seen it?
05:08I've been before.
05:08Oh, you have.
05:09All right.
05:09So you're...
05:11I just don't think they want us doing press coverage.
05:13That's all.
05:14So...
05:14But that's not my rules.
05:15We don't...
05:16You know, it's not us.
05:18Any of that.
05:19How was the food?
05:20The what?
05:20The food last night?
05:22I didn't...
05:23At the 250 birthday thing?
05:25Yeah.
05:25You know, I ate a little bit, but not a lot.
05:26It wasn't a dinner.
05:27It was a big party.
05:28It was fun.
05:29Did you see the village people?
05:30Did you get to watch it?
05:32I was in there a lot.
05:33They were good.
05:33They did a good job.
05:34The whole thing was great.
05:35The Navy band was great.
05:36People had a lot of fun.
05:37We had a lot of ambassadors there.
05:39We had a lot of our regional ambassadors from countries in the region that came in for
05:43the 250.
05:45So, obviously, not every 250 celebration around the world is going to have that scale of magnitude,
05:52but it's the most populous country in the world, so we had to do a big thing.
05:55Can I ask you one broad question?
05:57This is your first trip to India.
05:58I think it was your first trip to China as well.
05:59You must have lots going through your head on perspectives of the two biggest countries
06:03in the world for their population.
06:04Do you have any ideas, like comparison, how you felt in China, how you felt here?
06:10Well, they're different countries, obviously, but India is the most populous country in
06:14the world.
06:15It's a democracy.
06:16It's a strong strategic ally of the United States.
06:19China is the second largest economy in the world.
06:22The United States has to deal with both of these countries, but clearly our alliance
06:25with India is something we're highlighting here today.
06:27So, you always learn something when you go on these trips, but these are two countries
06:31I have paid a lot of attention to even during my time in the Senate for obvious reasons.
06:35They're big, important countries.
06:36All right, let's slide.
06:37Thanks very much.
06:38Thanks.
06:42Thanks.
07:08Thanks.
07:08Thanks.
