Transcript
00:00:07if i fail i'm letting an entire country down mexicans are resilient and we're here to prove
00:00:14that i'm not just out here for myself i'm representing my country for the first time ever
00:00:22seven teams representing seven regions from across the globe will compete together for
00:00:30their homeland in southern africa's zulu land
00:00:3650 square miles of punishing terrain patrolled by africa's deadliest predators this is the toughest
00:00:43survival competition ever attempted this is the olympics of survival it's us against the world
00:00:48oh my god where they must survive the wild and each other for 40 days this is our battlefield
00:00:56and we're here to fight with not even the clothes on their backs to win 200 000
00:01:07they will be tested at every turn seconds count between first second third by challenges designed
00:01:15to prove their skills let's go let's go there it is matt there it is matt and by the constant
00:01:21threat of
00:01:22elimination i want to see americans out it's okay the smiles out here are some of the very best in
00:01:28the
00:01:29world and they're dropping like flies with national pride on the line and everything to lose if you're
00:01:36american american you know what it is to love your country one team one winner two hundred thousand dollars
00:01:48if you don't fight to win don't play and throw
00:02:01previously on global showdown seven teams of competitors were tasked with a 24-hour insertion
00:02:07challenge to secure the three fundamentals of survival build your boma purify water and create
00:02:13primitive fire that's pretty nice okay and the opportunity to earn points wait okay with only
00:02:22three teams achieving primitive fire we've got flames
00:02:34four teams could already be facing elimination
00:02:41right now i'm on the shopping block i am under the red line i am just in shock
00:02:56the first one i am just in shock
00:02:57frank and i are doing really well out here we are 100 points above the low scores
00:03:05with 150 points usa south sits in third place and has earned a fire starter and bows and arrows all
00:03:12right
00:03:13we're hungry our stomachs are rumbling so i want to make sure that i take any opportunity to hunt that
00:03:19i
00:03:19can that's how it works in these hunting grounds if you don't get out there fast then the human
00:03:23presence starts thinning the herds
00:03:34dang that's on the other side of the river
00:03:45i'm seeing a lot of good stuff some in yalla and warthogs but they are on the other side of
00:03:52the river like i can't shoot the other side of the river
00:03:55eight y'all this is why we need the bridge on day two teams were given an optional challenge
00:04:02to build a bridge across the crocodile infested river to rich hunting grounds
00:04:08a completed bridge is worth an additional 100 points the prairie is wide open we have to get this
00:04:14bridge built we need to get across and we need to get this because this is food and we are
00:04:18hungry
00:04:19you're not going to make it 40 days without eating if we don't get there first we may not get
00:04:24fed
00:04:44what the was that something huge is outside
00:04:52it sounded like 10 feet away from our moment
00:04:59what the heck oh my god hey hey
00:05:11they seem to have gone away for now but that was that was crazy
00:05:16i saw a spot i liked over here really nice spot i think as far as like building a bridge
00:05:30okay we'll have to see what you think tied for last place usa pacific could be up for elimination
00:05:36and has claimed only a fire starter it's the morning of day three we did have a really rough night
00:05:43heard some howling and some starling there was a big animal it's out there but today's another day
00:05:50the challenge continues we have to build a bridge just get these points as soon as possible you know
00:05:55okay the sooner we can move up on that leaderboard the better we feel really confident about being
00:06:01able to bust out this bridge and get some points on the board because i for one do not want
00:06:05to show
00:06:06up on the bottom again i like this spot a lot okay it's narrow we're gonna have to like make
00:06:11support
00:06:12so it's structurally sound in the water i wish we had a saw for it that's going to be a
00:06:17huge benefit
00:06:17to the teams that are already up high on the leaderboard could be tough um but i think
00:06:24it's something we need to do soon i agree yeah take a look at this rachel look at these footprints
00:06:31oh my god they're huge they're rhino tracks oh wow probably from last night they're coming down
00:06:37here to drink this is right next to where we're camping to yeah our shelter is right over there
00:06:43that's just reaffirming our need to be right those are just trotting around right next to our home
00:06:48yeah wow nuts
00:06:59today's kind of the bridge build day let's get a location stake it claim it
00:07:07texas is in last place with three other teams so far only earning a fire starter
00:07:12it sucked seeing our team name below the red line cara and i we're going to build this bridge as
00:07:19quickly as possible and then we get a hundred points and another asset you ready to go scout yeah
00:07:33there's a scroll what there's a scroll a scroll a ho ho look at that
00:07:42we have more we already have no scroll oh wow it's a map today you will build a torch with
00:07:50wigs torch with
00:07:52wigs oh my gosh whoa challenge on challenge on challenge oh my gosh i can't believe this i mean
00:08:03this scroll just threw the entire day into chaos whatever plan we had today it's uh changes
00:08:10tied for first place usa east claimed a fire starter bows and arrows and a folding saw we got one
00:08:18challenge to make a bridge another challenge now to make a torch you know what every day you have a
00:08:23plan out here is a day that that plan gets kicked to the side tomorrow you will head to the
00:08:28x to prove
00:08:30the effectiveness each team must build a primitive torch for tomorrow's challenge using the materials in
00:08:38their possession or anything they can find in the surrounding area while the torch is mandatory for
00:08:43tomorrow's challenge and could earn each team 50 points teams must decide whether to also pursue
00:08:49building their bridge which will offer a hundred points for its completion
00:08:55so we have two challenges the bridge and the torch yeah but this one is the priority
00:09:04i'm worried about this task because it's really really important to us make these points
00:09:12tied for last place with three other teams brazil has only earned a fire starter
00:09:18let it go i will give my best for this challenger well if you don't play to win don't play
00:09:25at all
00:09:30we just need to find the proper logs to make the bridge okay are you thinking you want it this
00:09:36thickness because i think that that's too big do you what's this one's good though let's get that one
00:09:43in a tie for the lead australia claimed a fire starter bows and arrows and a folding saw
00:09:49so you're thinking this for one of the two sides yeah teams that choose to build a bridge must
00:09:55construct it with at least three rails from bank to bank and a minimum of eight rungs binding the rails
00:10:02together we have decided that we need to build the bridge today for a number of reasons one we want
00:10:11to make sure that we have every single point available to us and two this is the beginning
00:10:16of the challenge this is the part where we are going to have the most amount of energy and this
00:10:21is
00:10:21a big labor intensive job timber all right perfect one i don't know when elimination challenge is going
00:10:29to happen i don't know when we need to be above that red line so every point that we can
00:10:34get along
00:10:35the way we are going to fight for i think keep a fork in it for the other side because
00:10:39the fork will
00:10:40splay out on the bank yes i'm so grateful alexa's so strong out here because this challenge does require
00:10:46a fair bit of muscle you okay yep just going or nope just stuck on a tree
00:10:58all right let's just hope it's long enough obviously we can't see the bottom here
00:11:02yeah how do you feel about the whole croc situation i think we need to move very carefully
00:11:14oh god be careful
00:11:19watch out for the crocodiles
00:11:24just do you think that that's thick enough because that looks super big no i think we need
00:11:29thicker yeah but this can be one of them there is a huge amount of wobble um and we've got
00:11:35no
00:11:35grace period on either side like if anything happens with the weight of that or one side
00:11:40slips a little bit the whole thing's going to come into the water all right so why are you longer
00:11:46and thicker than we think all right
00:11:56i think i may need your help okay and this is all covered in biting ants this side great
00:12:04no i still like it okay i'll just i'll deal with it ready yep jeff and i didn't expect to
00:12:11be in last
00:12:12place and now we are building this bridge i've never built one but we need those hundred points
00:12:17and once this bridge is finished it gives us access to really great hunting grounds that we
00:12:23really need if we want to eat because we haven't eaten in three days up and over the cross
00:12:30nice yeah boy that's a good first good first log right yeah why don't we just put all three like
00:12:36on
00:12:36that little log right there i like that and they can kind of all pile on top of each other
00:12:41right yeah
00:12:42good find two challenges on the same day building a bridge building a torch this one really is going
00:12:51to show who not just the best in the country is this is going to show who's the best in
00:12:56the world
00:13:07that one there to the left in that two tree stand yeah is not a bad one and that would
00:13:11be a substantial enough size i think i think it'd hold my weight i think it would i could try
00:13:15so far
00:13:17gabby and i've got a number of long skinny branches that we need to build this bridge but then i
00:13:22realize
00:13:22you know i'm a big guy if this is going to hold me i gotta get a big log you
00:13:27got it buddy see it moving
00:13:29there you are everybody out here knows who matt is the reputation that matt's earned over time has
00:13:36absolutely well earned i'm not a professional survivalist that's not me i don't do this for
00:13:42a living i've never competed on a naked and afraid competition challenge out here but i'm a super
00:13:47competitive person i was an athlete my whole life i think that people are going to be a little bit
00:13:52surprised i'm really strong there we go it's creaking so matt and i put a wedge out drop that tree
00:14:03but it
00:14:03gets stuck in the canopy okay hold on i can get to that branch probably see i can probably climb
00:14:14this
00:14:14up into that crevice right there and then cut what's above my head it's not going to come down unless
00:14:19we
00:14:20cut the branch at the top if you can climb to there you should be able to hang and i'll
00:14:24be able to hold
00:14:25on to this okay and you can get on my shoulders as long as you feel confident to get to
00:14:29that crevice
00:14:30dabby is on a mission and having that kind of spirit is awesome all right let's see if we can
00:14:38do this
00:14:41we'd already put in a lot of effort here and i don't want to waste time and find something else
00:14:45and i'm not going to let anything stop me here it should be able to hold you as um thank
00:14:50you can
00:14:51step on my hand are you sure yep okay hold on yeah i will i actually put it up higher
00:14:58if i fall off this tree that's taking me out of the challenge it's risk versus reward out here and
00:15:04in
00:15:04this challenge there are 200 000 rewards and then next hand if you need it this is a hell of
00:15:11a lot
00:15:11dangerous this is potential for gabby to fall out of this tree and catastrophically hurt herself on
00:15:16this challenge you got another one yep hold on hold on a nice dirt get the last one yep
00:15:26yep got no idea how it gets down
00:15:45that tree stuck in the canopy it's not going to come down unless we cut the branch at the top
00:15:52okay i would say like before you get quite halfway switch the other side before i cut this
00:15:57i'm sitting my butt's in the crash of the tree and i'm like 20 feet in the air if i
00:16:03were to fall
00:16:04out off this tree it would take me out of the challenge you have to be very careful
00:16:08ready it's coming hold on one second i'm gonna go a couple strokes from the top it might pinch the
00:16:12top careful okay all right if you feel more confident i can try to break it now you think yes
00:16:20okay you feel safer yeah don't um this uh may come back on me so we'll see what happens
00:16:25okay okay go ahead okay oh there it is buddy okay so all right use whatever you need to
00:16:41do
00:16:49thanks matt all right
00:16:55be there okay we're down gabby just climbed who knows how the hell high up in this tree to
00:17:02sock cut this thing out climb down my back it's just teamwork in progress and that's when it's
00:17:07worth having a great partner more than one way to cut tree down you gotta do what you gotta do
00:17:12out
00:17:12here i think
00:17:15we got the wood as usa east texas pacific and australia continue building their optional bridges
00:17:24worth a hundred points usa south brazil and mexico have opted to prioritize their mandatory
00:17:32torches worth 50 points to make sure they're ready for tomorrow's challenge
00:17:41how do you see it fernanda i think it's pretty good
00:17:46with just 50 points mexico has claimed a fire starter and is tied for last place
00:17:53this is gonna be our torch because it's pretty long and it's also very very straight if we want
00:18:02the torch to last it needs to be not very thin i'm feeling confident my experience from naked and
00:18:10afraid made some torches just to see at night there's a frog here and the moment has come i'm gonna
00:18:17have to kill
00:18:23this is gonna be easy to build their primitive torches for tomorrow's challenge the teams must
00:18:29craft a handle at least eight feet long to safely hold the torch they must then create a wick system
00:18:35that will provide a long controlled burn teams can only make one torch but they can make as many
00:18:41replacement wicks as they choose here we can put another y on here and one here we will hope to
00:18:49get
00:18:49the y's a little bit more narrow for it to hold so that we can like stuff the wicks in
00:18:57it yes
00:19:05that's our torch all right let's walk it this way got it yep we can't just dedicate a whole
00:19:12day to build a torch we also need to build a bridge and building a bridge is not easy it
00:19:17takes a lot of
00:19:18time so we have to get this done now so i'm going to cut this off square and then split
00:19:25it so it splits
00:19:26to four just like making a fish spear for their torch frank and teal are crafting the end of their
00:19:33torch stick into four prongs which they'll split apart to create an opening crown to hold their wick
00:19:39do you have those paracord pieces in your pocket i do you want them yeah do you want to make
00:19:45a
00:19:45bird's nest or do you want to make a longer one oh do the bird's nest and let's see how
00:19:53that goes
00:19:54all right a bird's nest is a loose fluffy mass of very fine dry fibers designed to catch the
00:20:02smallest spark or ember and turn it into a flame i like this idea but bush crafting these is going
00:20:09to
00:20:09be time consuming an advantage of having teal as my partner is we know each other and i know we
00:20:16work well together but after going through the apocalypse with teal you know i've seen her highs
00:20:21and her lows so i mean i know how she can get i'm going on sending mojo your way i
00:20:28don't know what's
00:20:28happened with teal something's wrong with her she's like mentally taking a cliff dive and doesn't
00:20:35want to be around anyone let's just be quiet for the next two hours all right i'm hoping that i
00:20:44can
00:20:44keep her focused on the competition i'm gonna go over here look around for some more materials all right
00:20:53so frank is off i'm taking the twine that we got on the first challenge
00:20:59and making little bird's nests out of it frank made the call on which we were going to go with
00:21:05and now i'm just going to make as many as possible i wonder i think this would act just as
00:21:14much as a
00:21:14bird's nest i think if i take a bundle of this put a bundle of jupe throughout this like that
00:21:23and then
00:21:23hold it up there that's going to be a a pretty good burning torch for a minute i don't want
00:21:29to
00:21:29waste a bunch of time on something that we don't necessarily have to this stuff right here is very
00:21:35very good firewood bridge build is going slowly i've got two of the three support beams going across
00:21:52the river right now i'm going to look for maybe the next best tree here to cut down and throw
00:22:02over
00:22:02because we need to make a torch for the challenge tomorrow the clock is ticking right now
00:22:12all right here goes nothing three two one
00:22:18nice boom log falls perfectly you might as well sign me up to be a lumberjack oh my goodness
00:22:27so obviously there's a danger to this place that we can't ignore and that's crocodiles
00:22:31if we step into this water we fall into this water game over so i put these little handrail
00:22:37logs you know stuck into the mud every few feet
00:22:45awesome okay that's a good theme the sword does its trick but carrying them is super awkward here we
00:22:53are just two chicks hauling us through one of the most unforgiving landscapes on earth this would be
00:22:59something that the men would normally go out and do and here we are hauling us by ourselves i couldn't
00:23:05be
00:23:06more proud oh yeah oh kai you're herculean kai's indiana jones over here happy with that 100 okay
00:23:17good i guess we start cutting the rungs who says that team doesn't have the brawn
00:23:28i found these and i think that they'll go up just about as fast
00:23:38i start making the wicks for this torch i'm thinking eight to ten decent size wicks
00:23:48so i'm watching frank and it feels like he's not building the wicks with the bird's nest
00:23:53you know 40 minutes shredding this whole thing it was prepped for you but you just made them without
00:23:58it i do not understand when you sleep she might be way overthinking all that i don't know but i
00:24:06had
00:24:06all the materials for you to make them and you didn't make them the way you you asked me to
00:24:11sit
00:24:12here and shred this all and i sat here and shredded it and then you just didn't do it i
00:24:16literally
00:24:17thought i was making this so that you could put it in those things honestly frustration burns we'll
00:24:24use all this well you weren't using this and i don't see why you would use it now if you've
00:24:29made
00:24:29four without it because four ain't enough but why wouldn't you make the other four the same way
00:24:38i'm just saying i'm gonna use it till that's all but that's what i'm getting at we're
00:24:42miscommunicating i go get some of these i'm gonna put all this in there and then we're gonna burn them
00:24:50and that's it
00:25:13and that's it okay when it comes to this torch build we have different understandings on how
00:25:21it's to be constructed it just comes down to just being a miscommunication out here in this challenge
00:25:27you know there is no changing partners there's no do-overs your partner's your lifeline if you two
00:25:34can't figure out a common ground and work together and move forward then there is no future for you or
00:25:43your partner out here we'll use all this as usa south brazil and mexico work on their mandatory
00:25:54torches worth 50 points usa east texas pacific and australia near completion of their optional bridges
00:26:03worth 100 points but still have to construct their torches as well for tomorrow's competition
00:26:15when you're done just chuck it down oh okay all right okay coming i've got another rung for you
00:26:22how many of you are down there now say maybe four i don't know five kai is just a phenomenal
00:26:27human but
00:26:28she's also a phenomenal teacher and she's the right partner for me because i'm really good at taking
00:26:34instruction and i have absolutely no problems with her taking the lead and doing exactly what i'm told
00:26:41and picking up what i need to pick up along the way you got it just land it here perfect
00:26:45that's my
00:26:46once across and you can like step on two we don't need a man to win this challenge i mean
00:26:53i like dessert
00:26:53i love him but i don't need him we just finished average build nice job oh for two people who'd
00:27:03never
00:27:03high five we're doing very well
00:27:10just got to tie on some rungs once our bridge is complete we can cross yeah this is a lot
00:27:16of points
00:27:17this ain't no like 50 point thing just got a couple of rocks to hopefully add some stability
00:27:22to our bridge and then we'll be done i think no longer the caboose this gives us back over the
00:27:28red
00:27:28line and with this we'll get either a bow or fishing kit as well we're on the right track if
00:27:34so we're
00:27:35about to be done that was the eighth rung yeah the rest of it's good too it's all lashed together
00:27:46that looks nice i think so amazing now we make a torch yeah now we need to focus on
00:27:53the torch we have a challenge tomorrow i think we got this
00:28:03nothing like kneeling down over some croc infested water yep
00:28:08technically right now we have a bridge with three cross members and eight lashed pieces across it
00:28:15that should be good for 100 points matt i know it's not the prettiest bridge that you've ever made
00:28:20not the prettiest but it is functional you got it buddy guess who has 300 points about to get 350
00:28:30by the end of the day these two so now we gotta do a torch
00:28:48yeah yes marina it's working yeah this time is sufficient the combination the dry grass and dry
00:29:00tricks will be perfect to open a big fire the zulu lands never see it before
00:29:08i can make a canadian crank knot if you want it real tight is that what you want it to
00:29:19be sure yeah
00:29:19just tie that yeah good news is we both understand that we are human and we are not perfect sometimes
00:29:28we
00:29:28can bicker like siblings because we both think we have the best way to do it but right now we
00:29:33forgive
00:29:34each other for our um maybe you know our tense moments
00:29:41is that tight yeah what do you think i defer to you yeah you defer to me whatever you decide
00:29:48i'm good
00:29:49with i think every little bit will help raise it yeah i think so
00:29:56that is burning good though there's 200 000 reasons to squash any tension and put it behind you it's small
00:30:05potatoes potatoes would be pretty tasty right now i wish i knew what we were burning
00:30:18okay so we have our torch here it's weaved look at that that craftsmanship we make this green so that
00:30:29it
00:30:29doesn't burn that fast the intention is for this to hold the wicks that pablo is making over there
00:30:37it might be over confident but i don't want to test it because we don't want to waste wigs so
00:30:46we finished
00:30:47the torch i'm feeling good we're ready to take on the challenge for the torch we don't know what's
00:30:55going to happen so we just made a lot of weeks we're good to go with only a few hours
00:31:03of daylight
00:31:04remaining teams usa east pacific and australia have boosted their scores 100 points by finishing
00:31:11their bridges while teams mexico brazil and usa south have earned the 50 points for building their
00:31:18torches but texas has yet to complete their bridge or torch without a torch texas cannot compete in
00:31:25tomorrow's competition
00:31:31not exactly liking how it's looking so far right now we've got four bridge planks all the way across
00:31:39the river and we still have a long way to go this is a good base here maybe a couple
00:31:46more big ones
00:31:48and then i'm going to go start looking for some torch poles for the challenge the other challenge
00:31:57that we have to do
00:32:01yeah we don't know if we need to switch up who's holding the torch
00:32:08we're batoning the end of this torch we're going to put this open we'll put the wick material inside
00:32:13of that split working with gabby has been fantastic we are hustling more than anyone we're putting in
00:32:18the hard work and we know that not a single other survivalist will ever be able to outwork us
00:32:25i'm just making these dense little wicks little bird nests um the idea is if it's denser it'll take a
00:32:34little bit longer to burn through i don't know what's going on with jeff but he's been gone for a
00:32:40while
00:32:41we still have so much to do today i don't love where we're standing right now in this competition
00:32:46we came here to kick ass and right now i feel like we're letting down texas
00:33:00it's all about now opening it up make a wedge right
00:33:07that howdy hello neighbors oh he knows all our secrets what's going on lucky on us
00:33:15getting down to the water you're good i'm not stealing it no i'm just saying i'm blocking your
00:33:19path oh yeah we got our bridge done yeah yeah all right you guys here's almost done it looks like
00:33:26yeah yeah we uh we we wanted we didn't want to lose time getting this thing done so we kind
00:33:31of split
00:33:31but yeah now i'm going down to finish yeah oh cool yeah you're almost done yeah matt can't even help
00:33:37himself he had to rub it in again oh guess what jeff our bridge is done good luck on your
00:33:44bridge yeah yeah
00:33:48so this is a team challenge this is about working each other up maximizing each other's efforts and
00:33:55team texas is split up they got no communication they have no teamwork jeff looks like he's lost you
00:34:01you know he's out here and everything he tries to do he's not doing well at if you're behind the
00:34:06leader it uh you're going to be looking at the ass damn it
00:34:22kara and i are near the bottom of the scoreboard and that sucks we just need to get this bridge
00:34:28done
00:34:28finish up finish up the torch and hopefully go into the challenge tomorrow handle our business and then
00:34:34make the comeback
00:34:38yeah boy yeah
00:34:43perfect perfect
00:34:53hopefully it's not too heavy alexa and i are absolutely exhausted having just completed the
00:35:00bridge build but we have another challenge tomorrow so we're getting started straight away
00:35:06probably just toothpicks and pencils yep into this and then we sort of are we putting wood and stuff in
00:35:12that to build it out the tipi so it burns like that is that the aim that's a great idea
00:35:17alexa
00:35:18comes up with this brilliant idea she says why don't we do an upside down tipi that will create a
00:35:24sustainable wick for a torch i wondered if maybe we could use some twigs that sort of branch out a
00:35:30little bit and then we just put some jute and then some grass some fluffed up cotton wool in the
00:35:36middle
00:35:36we'll put another layer of jute around the outside and then we will give that a crack and see what
00:35:40happens upside down cheesy yeah
00:35:47the trick of this thing is gonna be the cup maybe like wrapping like green things around it
00:35:52like and then stuff bark inside they're gonna need to be thick and we have to be smart
00:35:57we can play around with it but yeah hear me out like if it's just the outer layer it's not
00:36:05like
00:36:05the whole shebang mm-hmm what if we can find one that's like this
00:36:13that's so much better i think dan could be over engineering just a little bit like i'll have an
00:36:18idea and then dan will be oh well maybe we could tweak it this way and it's like frustrating because
00:36:23i
00:36:24know he'll do whatever he wants i just feel like i'm not heard at all i think we could find
00:36:28something
00:36:29that kind of has like a view like that anyways and just you know okay i don't know i'm just
00:36:35throwing
00:36:36stuff at the wall seeing what sticks
00:36:46yeah the bridge structure is nearly complete the final step is to put a bunch of support beams
00:36:53all the way across tie him in to the bridge itself and then kara and i are going to be
00:37:00testing this
00:37:00bad boy out once this bridge is finished that means we get an extra hundred points points that we
00:37:06desperately needed because we want to be above that red line and not be up for elimination okay safe and
00:37:12safe and sound all right
00:37:18yeah boy nice job fighter 100 points baby 100 points in the bag and access to the hunting grounds
00:37:28oh this is huge go big and send them home baby go big and send them home this is what
00:37:34i live for
00:37:44that's great that's gone for really good a minute and a half now and a big flame too
00:37:50yeah those sticks working very well yeah we need to create a flame hot enough and stained enough to
00:37:57prove that their torch is effective more extended time that your torch can stay light that might be the
00:38:02key to finishing this challenge 15 minutes of flame if we do five of them all right do we feel
00:38:08like that's
00:38:09enough yes i feel like that's enough all right we have our wick here so this is a mixture of
00:38:25grass
00:38:26and dried palm prawn this part is very tight and secure obviously the top here is going to burn much
00:38:31quicker i like it you happy with that yeah six or eight of those we should be solid it looks
00:38:36fantastic
00:38:36i would say like do what you can with the palms you have probably and then we can tie some
00:38:41up with
00:38:41you yeah the sun is low we got to get going we have no time to waste cara and i
00:38:50don't know much about
00:38:51what this challenge entails tomorrow all we know is we need a torch so we're coming prepared to burn down
00:38:57the whole damn forest if need be it's looking good thanks this model comes completely wrapped
00:39:06in fresh vine i love it i love it running out of daylight you're able to find a way to
00:39:14make those
00:39:15vines work after all check it out we can still set a proper wick in here pull it up and
00:39:22without falling
00:39:23out it can still sit right here and burn pretty nicely if we just hold it steady we just like
00:39:28have
00:39:28to use the right materials like it won't fall out we made it a little extra long a little longer
00:39:33than we
00:39:34needed it a little top heavy now but that'll burn
00:39:44today we can eat a little bit because he found some worms this worm have vitamins proteins like a brazilian
00:40:01barbecue our first meat here cheers cheers cheers thank you for this food
00:40:15really nice really nice yes have a soft taste um like a snack like a snack really
00:40:24good morning tomorrow is a big day it's important to sleep really good tonight
00:40:43is that warm enough for you over there today was a big day um we have not stopped since
00:40:52we woke up this morning and now we are just exhausted
00:41:00we're trying to strategize about tomorrow but quite honestly we've got nothing left
00:41:08get some rest and be ready to smash it tomorrow yeah hopefully the
00:41:16we're trying to fire to choose the predators yeah
00:41:30What else?
00:41:43It's good time, right?
00:41:45Mm-hmm.
00:41:46Oh, my God.
00:41:50You can't trust in hienas.
00:41:56Believe me, this animal eats you.
00:42:09There are hienas here.
00:42:14They're here in front of us.
00:42:17They're fucking crazy.
00:42:40Get out of here!
00:42:43It's alright.
00:42:57He's gone now.
00:42:58He was right over here when I yelled at him.
00:43:00He did a big complete lap, yeah.
00:43:03He was just like sniffing in the bushes.
00:43:05Trying to see if there was a weak spot in the boma,
00:43:08but luckily there is no weak spots in this boma.
00:43:10I'm getting gamer.
00:43:13Here he is.
00:43:26Let's go, let's go.
00:43:27I don't sleep last night.
00:43:29Many animals here.
00:43:31I am really tired.
00:43:34Oh my God.
00:43:36But this is a good day for you.
00:43:39Today we need to work our best together.
00:43:44It's really important to my country, this challenger.
00:43:48Come on.
00:43:50Let's go.
00:43:55I'll take the torch and you take the flag.
00:43:58Okay.
00:43:59We're both exhausted.
00:44:01The animals, they were crazy.
00:44:04I've got to admit I'm nervous.
00:44:06Alexa and I are absolutely exhausted.
00:44:09And I know that where we place in this challenge
00:44:12could determine how we move through this game.
00:44:14Alright, I've got the bundles.
00:44:16You've got the torch and the flag.
00:44:17And the flag.
00:44:19We have a torch challenge today.
00:44:20You don't know what's coming.
00:44:21There's no idea exactly what we're going to have to do.
00:44:24But we know we're going to have to probably do it fast.
00:44:26This challenge could bring us more points.
00:44:28It could bring us assets.
00:44:29We really have no idea what we're walking into today.
00:44:32Let's go torch out our competition.
00:44:39I look around at the other competitors' torches.
00:44:42I see some of them with the four pronged spear type technology
00:44:45of just opening it up to be able to put it in Tinder.
00:44:48And then I see Jeff's torch.
00:44:49It looks like something that he maybe saw in a movie,
00:44:53but it was a cartoon.
00:44:54That torch is not going to win this challenge.
00:44:57Alright, shall we see what's under the scoreboard this time?
00:45:00Check it out.
00:45:00Let's do it.
00:45:04Nice.
00:45:05Wow.
00:45:06Wow.
00:45:07That's been some changes.
00:45:08Drea is still at the top.
00:45:10A lot of teams got it.
00:45:12Heading into today's challenge,
00:45:14all teams have finished their torches,
00:45:16adding 50 points to their totals.
00:45:18Teams USA East,
00:45:20Australia,
00:45:21USA Pacific,
00:45:22and Texas have also completed their bridges
00:45:25for an additional 100 points.
00:45:27Looking at the scoreboard now,
00:45:29we're above the red line.
00:45:31This is good.
00:45:32Tied for third place.
00:45:34There you go.
00:45:35Okay.
00:45:36Okay.
00:45:37I'm pissed off that we're on the bottom,
00:45:40but I'm not scared.
00:45:42We will make it throughout this competition,
00:45:45and we will win.
00:45:46Team Mexico.
00:45:50In the next stage of this gauntlet challenge,
00:45:53you must build a fire and ignite your torch
00:45:56to prove its staying power.
00:45:58Phase one of today's multi-phase competition
00:46:01will be a test of how well the teams can keep their torches burning.
00:46:05Each team will need to build a fire to ignite their torch
00:46:08and use it to drop a rock hanging in a pyre.
00:46:12When the rock falls,
00:46:13the teams must then use their torch to release a bundle
00:46:16suspended in the trees above.
00:46:18Only the first five teams to drop their bundle
00:46:22will advance to phase two.
00:46:26The sixth and seventh-placed teams
00:46:28will earn no additional points.
00:46:31That's rough.
00:46:33We need to be first.
00:46:37Damn.
00:46:38Oh, my gosh.
00:46:39Can't finish in the final two.
00:46:41No, absolutely not.
00:46:42Are you kidding me?
00:46:44This is not happening.
00:46:51Only the first five teams to drop their bundle
00:46:55will advance to phase two.
00:46:58Damn.
00:46:59Oh, my gosh.
00:47:00Can't finish in the final two.
00:47:02No, absolutely not.
00:47:03In this multi-phase challenge,
00:47:05the torches that each team has built
00:47:07will be put to the test.
00:47:09In phase two,
00:47:11use the materials from the bundle you have released
00:47:13to construct a functioning suspended deadfall trap.
00:47:17Capable of trapping a cane rat.
00:47:21That's pretty big.
00:47:22Cane rats are giant rodents
00:47:24found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa
00:47:26that can grow to two feet long
00:47:28and weigh up to 15 pounds.
00:47:30The five teams moving on to phase two
00:47:33must build a suspended deadfall trap
00:47:35using a heavy rock hanging by a rope
00:47:38that's attached to a trigger stick.
00:47:40The trigger rests on a smaller stake
00:47:42with bait placed nearby.
00:47:43When a cane rat taking the bait knocks the small stake,
00:47:47it trips the trigger and the rock falls.
00:47:50To complete the challenge,
00:47:52your trap must trigger and crush a gourd
00:47:54placed beneath it.
00:47:56Oh.
00:47:58No pressure?
00:47:59Right.
00:48:01Points will be awarded by the order of finish.
00:48:04The teams that do not move on to phase two
00:48:06earn zero points.
00:48:09Your gauntlet challenge starts now.
00:48:12Go.
00:48:12Go, go, go, go, go, Matt.
00:48:13Go, go, go, go, go.
00:48:14Go on in.
00:48:15Go, go, go, go, go, go.
00:48:17In this gauntlet challenge,
00:48:18there is a cutoff and you don't make it.
00:48:21You don't continue the challenge.
00:48:23Down, down, down.
00:48:24We're now right behind Australia
00:48:26and Team USA East, Matt and Gabby.
00:48:28We can catch up, baby.
00:48:30We can catch up.
00:48:31We can catch up.
00:48:31Kara and I, we are going to kick today's ass.
00:48:35Let's go, Gabby.
00:48:36Let's go.
00:48:40Woo-hoo.
00:48:41Woo-hoo.
00:48:42Let's go.
00:48:42Woo-hoo.
00:48:43Woo-hoo.
00:48:45Let's go.
00:48:45Woo-hoo.
00:48:46Woo-hoo.
00:48:46How did he light his fire that fast?
00:48:50Oh, .
00:48:51Oh, .
00:48:52I see Rene just bolting with his torch already on fire.
00:48:58It literally lights a fire under my butt to get going.
00:49:02I'm going to go on that.
00:49:03Here we go, here we go, here we go.
00:49:03Got it?
00:49:04Got it?
00:49:04Get it built up, get it built up.
00:49:06This is huge.
00:49:06100 points for the winner, 50 for second place.
00:49:10Such a big point span.
00:49:11This could be exactly what Gabby and I need
00:49:13to get us where we would be untouchable.
00:49:16Go, buddy, go, buddy, go.
00:49:18You got it nice and steady.
00:49:21You know how to do it.
00:49:21There we go.
00:49:22There are two phases to this challenge
00:49:24that the torch needs to stay alight for.
00:49:27More extended time that your torch can stay alight.
00:49:30That might be the key to finishing this challenge.
00:49:33Come on, come on, come on.
00:49:34Come on, come on, come on.
00:49:38There you go.
00:49:38Yeah, there you go.
00:49:40Quickly, quickly.
00:49:41We didn't know what we were going to do in the challenge.
00:49:44We didn't test the torch ahead of time.
00:49:48I just hope that our torch lasts.
00:49:50Corral, corral, corral.
00:49:52Come on, come on, come on.
00:49:53Can't be last.
00:49:54Go, go, go.
00:49:55So my task is making sure this fire stays hot
00:49:58because if that torch goes out,
00:49:59he has to run all the way back and re-knight our torch.
00:50:02The tinder inside this torch
00:50:04shouldn't prevent the torch from burning out very quickly.
00:50:07It may not be pretty, but this is a torch to $200,000.
00:50:14Doing good.
00:50:15No.
00:50:17Yeah, it is.
00:50:18Go.
00:50:18Let it baby it, baby it, baby it.
00:50:20We built our wicks out of this dry vine material.
00:50:25This stuff is like really, really dry, brittle kindling,
00:50:28but it burns hot.
00:50:30It burns bright.
00:50:32Good part about that is it doesn't look like there's any shortage of flame.
00:50:38Here, go. Go, Dan.
00:50:39Right here.
00:50:40Go. I got it.
00:50:42I know what it takes to win these competitions.
00:50:45That requires staying in sync and communicating
00:50:48and working well together.
00:50:50But I know how intense some of these challenges can get.
00:50:54Let's go. We need to get this done.
00:50:58Marina, it's complete.
00:51:00It's complete.
00:51:01It's complete.
00:51:04It's complete.
00:51:05It's complete.
00:51:05We're going to lose the flame.
00:51:15This revolving torch I made at a 45 degree angle,
00:51:18it will transfer all of its flames as it goes and burn up the other one.
00:51:23A little low.
00:51:24There you go.
00:51:25There you go.
00:51:26Go, go, go.
00:51:28I don't even know where anybody else is.
00:51:30In record time, we have our torch lit.
00:51:32We can run to the next part of this challenge.
00:51:34That's where a rock is suspended up in the air.
00:51:37That rock has paracord tied to it.
00:51:39You got it, Matt.
00:51:41This is working.
00:51:42It's perfectly engineered for success.
00:51:46Okay.
00:51:47I'm going.
00:51:48We're the second team to burn our pyre right now,
00:51:51and I'm headed towards the tree to burn down our rock.
00:51:54Come on.
00:51:55You can do it.
00:51:55Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:51:58Okay.
00:51:59Rachel, I'm going.
00:52:00I'm going.
00:52:01When our rock falls, I look around, and we're in third place.
00:52:04And all of this is by seconds.
00:52:06But it's still anybody's game.
00:52:09Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:52:12Go, go, go.
00:52:13I don't know who's ahead of us.
00:52:15All I can hear is the whooping and the yelling,
00:52:17and it's so frustrating because we could be the ones coming in last place
00:52:20and getting no points today.
00:52:25We need to hurry.
00:52:30Let's go.
00:52:32There we go.
00:52:33Come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:52:35We need to hurry.
00:52:37In this multi-phase challenge,
00:52:39only the first five teams to burn through the rope
00:52:41and drop the rock and paracord bundle suspended in the tree line above
00:52:45will advance to phase two.
00:52:50Go, go, go.
00:52:52It's really terrible.
00:52:53We got here in first place.
00:52:56And now, leave fourth place.
00:52:59More high.
00:53:00Yeah, yeah.
00:53:01Let's go.
00:53:06I can see Pablo at the pyre just trying to burn the rope for the rock to fall.
00:53:11I don't know why it's taking so long.
00:53:13Everybody's just running towards the trees,
00:53:15and I don't understand what's going on.
00:53:18Pablo, let's go!
00:53:20We need the other one.
00:53:23We had to go back to the rock circle to light another wick.
00:53:29We made a torch that was big, that could hold a lot of material,
00:53:33but it's burning really quickly.
00:53:37Don't let the rock drop on there.
00:53:38Okay, go ahead.
00:53:39Hang on, slow, slow, slow.
00:53:40Okay.
00:53:41This is the most urgent part of the challenge at this point,
00:53:43because only five people go through.
00:53:45Those are the only five teams that get any points in this entire challenge,
00:53:48so we have to make it through.
00:53:50But I have to have faith that our torch is going to do the job.
00:53:53We tested it for this exact reason.
00:53:57There it goes.
00:53:57Yeah, it goes.
00:54:00Bájalo, Pablo, para que agarre!
00:54:04Yes!
00:54:06We got this.
00:54:07This is not good if we fall behind.
00:54:10No bueno.
00:54:13¿Ya? Pablo, vamos!
00:54:16I'm going to stay here.
00:54:18You have to keep burning this thing.
00:54:20You got it, my friend.
00:54:21Keep on burning.
00:54:21We get to our tree.
00:54:22We're looking around.
00:54:23We see Dan, Team Australia.
00:54:25I mean, this is heating up.
00:54:27It's neck and neck.
00:54:29I'll look for material as soon as it drops?
00:54:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:54:32Keep it on there.
00:54:32Nice and hot.
00:54:33Nice and hot.
00:54:34Keep going.
00:54:36Yeah, man.
00:54:37Go, buddy!
00:54:39USA East is the first team to complete Phase 1
00:54:42by burning down the rock and paracord bundle
00:54:44that will be used to make their suspended deadfall trap.
00:54:48In Phase 2, teams will construct their trap
00:54:51by suspending their 20-pound rock with paracord,
00:54:54hung over a sturdy tree limb,
00:54:55and secured in place by a trigger mechanism on the ground.
00:54:58A thick inverted Y or seven stick must be hammered deep into the ground as an anchor to support the
00:55:05weight of the hanging rock,
00:55:06and be positioned so that the falling rock hits the prey and not the trap.
00:55:11All right, what I need is a nice anchor into the ground.
00:55:16My torch is blazing, baby!
00:55:18It's like a Christmas tree that just caught fire.
00:55:21This thing is even better than I expected.
00:55:24And we are right on the heels of Matt and Gabby.
00:55:28Kara, let's go! Kara, Kara!
00:55:30Coming!
00:55:31Try to find a white stick.
00:55:34We were last to get our torch lit, but we have the tallest torch.
00:55:38Maybe this is our turning point.
00:55:40Maybe we have an advantage here,
00:55:42because Frank can put that torch right up against that rope.
00:55:45Yes!
00:55:46You want to tie this rock to this?
00:55:48Yes.
00:55:49With USA East, Texas, and USA South advancing to Phase 2 of the Gauntlet Challenge,
00:55:55only two more teams will have the chance to build traps and earn points.
00:56:03More high?
00:56:04Yeah.
00:56:05Oh, come on.
00:56:08We need to come back.
00:56:10We need to come back.
00:56:11We need to come back.
00:56:13Marina and I are in trouble.
00:56:16My fire is not strong.
00:56:19I need to add more fuel and the torch.
00:56:24I just have this.
00:56:27Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:56:29We have to move on to the next phase for this Gauntlet Challenge.
00:56:33Up to this point, every single point counts.
00:56:36Come on, come on, let's go, Marina.
00:56:37We are rushing.
00:56:41Yes!
00:56:42Yes!
00:56:43Yes!
00:56:43Okay, come on.
00:56:44With four teams advancing to Phase 2, teams Brazil, Mexico, and Australia battle for the last spot to continue in
00:56:52the challenge.
00:56:53Come on!
00:56:54The torch starting to go out.
00:56:57The other teams are ahead of us.
00:57:03No points means we could be headed towards an elimination challenge.
00:57:14Okay, the wind's blowing that way.
00:57:15You got it.
00:57:16Nice and steady.
00:57:17We cannot afford to get no points, seconds count.
00:57:21That could be the difference between us placing and coming last.
00:57:33Okay, slow and steady.
00:57:35Slow and steady.
00:57:36With four teams already in Phase 2, only one spot remains to move on in the Gauntlet Challenge.
00:57:43Pablo, let's go!
00:57:46We are near.
00:57:47Near the cord.
00:57:49Okay, the wind's blowing that way.
00:57:51There it is there.
00:57:51It's frying, it's frying, it's frying.
00:57:53It's frying.
00:57:54Yes!
00:57:55Yes!
00:57:56Yes!
00:57:56Yes!
00:57:57Yes!
00:57:59Yes!
00:58:02We are in the next part of the Gauntlet Challenge.
00:58:07Only five made it this far, and I know that we are at least in the top five,
00:58:12and we're going to get some points on the board today, and I'm ecstatic.
00:58:15Australia advances into Phase 2, leaving Mexico and Brazil with zero points.
00:58:23Guaranteed to remain below the red line and vulnerable for elimination.
00:58:28We should have tested our torch before the challenge.
00:58:31We're realizing a lot of things now that we could have made better.
00:58:36I can't believe in it.
00:58:57We are 100% in the lead right now, and as long as we don't make a mistake, we're winning
00:59:02this.
00:59:02In Phase 2, teams will gather materials and construct their suspended deadfall trap, capable of catching an African cane rat.
00:59:11The first step is to hang their 20-pound rock with paracord over a sturdy tree limb.
00:59:16Matt and I have a strategy going into this.
00:59:18I'm going to throw the rope over, I'm going to tie up the rock, Matt's going to source the materials
00:59:22for the trap, and then we're going to work together to set this thing.
00:59:26Teamwork is the secret sauce to success out here.
00:59:30I'm going to tie this paracord to my knife and throw it over this tree real quick.
00:59:35Oh no, that's not what I wanted.
00:59:38Fuck.
00:59:39That's going to kill me.
00:59:41Do you like this limb?
00:59:44What limb, Teal?
00:59:45Huh?
00:59:46What limb?
00:59:46That limb right there, I'm going to throw it over.
00:59:48That's fine.
00:59:49You keep prepping the materials for the trap.
00:59:51The rock has to be suspended in a tree for this deadfall trap.
00:59:55As I'm doing that, Frank is whipping out the different sticks.
00:59:59Yes.
01:00:00Okay.
01:00:01Well, good?
01:00:02Yep.
01:00:02Can I get there?
01:00:03Yep.
01:00:04Okay.
01:00:04I need a fat seven, the size of my wrist.
01:00:08Okay.
01:00:09The trap's anchor is a thick inverted Y, or seventh stick, hammered deep into the ground.
01:00:14When the trigger, tied to the rock on one end, is set, the anchor acts as a fulcrum, resisting the
01:00:20upward force caused by the hanging rock.
01:00:24Nope.
01:00:25Nah?
01:00:25It's got to go be nailed into the ground.
01:00:28We're out here in a brand new competition, global showdown, putting two people together in a 40-day challenge where
01:00:36there's hundreds of thousands of dollars.
01:00:38On the line, from any decision you make, is like a pressure cooker.
01:00:44So what do we still need?
01:00:47Dan?
01:00:49Dan has complete tunnel vision, and I'm trying to help, but I'm not sure what he needs.
01:00:54In this moment, communication is crucial.
01:00:57We can get the rock tight on.
01:00:59Okay.
01:01:00That's really important.
01:01:00Why don't you do that?
01:01:01I'll do that.
01:01:04Try to find a Y stick.
01:01:05Okay.
01:01:06Jeff is crafting the initial parts of this deadfall trap.
01:01:10There's a Y stake, there's a single stake, there's a trigger mechanism, there's paracord that we have to use.
01:01:15It's all very complex.
01:01:17There's a lot of moving parts here.
01:01:19Uh, stakes.
01:01:20Stakes.
01:01:21Two stakes.
01:01:22Deadfall traps are very, very difficult, but I've done this on previous challenges.
01:01:28All right, there we go.
01:01:30Deadfall set.
01:01:31We got it.
01:01:32I want this stick here.
01:01:36Done.
01:01:37I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make a deadfall trap.
01:01:40Feeling good about this challenge.
01:01:47We are so far behind.
01:01:49Kai immediately has to figure out how to get the logistics of the trap set up, because that is not
01:01:55my forte.
01:01:56What she wants from me is the assets that she needs to put in the ground that are going to
01:02:00stabilise the trap.
01:02:00So she is firing out quick instructions to me.
01:02:03I need a trigger.
01:02:04Okay.
01:02:04I need it to be a little thicker than my thumb.
01:02:07Yeah.
01:02:07About that long, please.
01:02:10I've never set up a suspended deadfall before, but I know most of the moving parts.
01:02:17Got it.
01:02:18All right.
01:02:19How much?
01:02:19Just keep going.
01:02:24Matt, don't kill me.
01:02:26You got an issue?
01:02:27Gabby, you can tell she's upset.
01:02:29And she just threw that rope over, and it wrapped around like an Indiana Jones movie.
01:02:34This is big.
01:02:35We need it to be on both sides, so that it has the ability to pick up a trap.
01:02:39Oh, .
01:02:40We're going to have to cut it.
01:02:41That's right.
01:02:41We're going to have to cut it.
01:02:46Yeah.
01:02:46There you go, buddy.
01:02:47Redo it.
01:02:47Yep.
01:02:47Yep.
01:02:48Yep.
01:02:48Yep.
01:02:48Coming back.
01:02:49I eventually have to take a knife out, reach up, jump up, cut it down.
01:02:53This is a huge mistake we just made.
01:02:56We were way ahead, and our competition now might be able to get one step further.
01:03:02Go over?
01:03:02Yep.
01:03:03Good.
01:03:03Just chuck it.
01:03:04Ready?
01:03:04Perfect.
01:03:05Matt, coming down?
01:03:06Go away.
01:03:07All right.
01:03:08Here you go.
01:03:11Score is a huge part of this.
01:03:13And if you keep yourself on the top, you're most likely going to be able to stay on top.
01:03:18If you let other people get that 100 points on top of you, that's no good.
01:03:22It's going to pull that out.
01:03:23It's pulling it out.
01:03:24It's going to come out here?
01:03:25No, it's pulling it out.
01:03:26Yeah.
01:03:27The ground below this tree that we picked is super hard.
01:03:30Even though that sharpened spike is trying to go in the dirt, it's not sharp enough.
01:03:35This is a setback, but I think everyone is going to be having a little bit of the same
01:03:39struggle.
01:03:41OK.
01:03:42You got it, Matt.
01:03:44OK.
01:03:44Is that good?
01:03:45Should be good.
01:03:45Is that good?
01:03:46Because I need to pound it right now.
01:03:47Should be good.
01:03:49Oh, you're going to use the rock to pound it?
01:03:51Yes, I need the rock to pound it.
01:03:52OK.
01:03:52Can you go use the little rock?
01:03:54The little rock.
01:03:54The little one we just burned down up here?
01:03:56I need the big one.
01:03:57I need a lot of force.
01:03:59The seven stick is the crux of the entire operation here.
01:04:02It's the piece that needs to stick into the ground that's basically going to be holding
01:04:05down the entire weight of the rock above.
01:04:08So this piece can't go wrong.
01:04:12I need to .
01:04:14Oh, me.
01:04:15OK.
01:04:16You're a new eye.
01:04:18Can it be thinner instead of cutting such a thick?
01:04:21It has to be really strong in the ground like that.
01:04:24When our seven stick breaks, I start to panic a little bit.
01:04:28I felt really solid about where we were, but it kind of feels like things are starting
01:04:31to fall apart.
01:04:34Dan, can we not use this one for a Y?
01:04:37I don't know what you're talking about.
01:04:39In theory, I'm trying to get a new Y-6 since we just broke ours, but I'm not sure
01:04:42what Dan's doing because I feel like we're not communicating as well as we have to pass.
01:04:48Jesus, we're so far behind now.
01:04:51Goddammit, I feel like I'm still at square one.
01:05:03I'm trying to find another seven stick, and at this point, I'm upset.
01:05:08It's surprising you can, like, be so far ahead in this challenge and immediately become so
01:05:12far behind.
01:05:23I find the perfect stick chopping it as hard as I can.
01:05:27Knock something out of place in my lower back.
01:05:28I'm not immobilized, but it definitely doesn't feel good.
01:05:32Team USA Pacific is competing against Texas, Australia, USA East, and South to make a suspended
01:05:41deadfall trap capable of catching an African cane rat.
01:05:45The first team to successfully trigger their trap and release the heavy rock will win 100 points.
01:05:52Do you want me to cut off that top bit?
01:05:54You know what?
01:05:55If you can get one half this size, that would be great.
01:05:58Where's the other trigger?
01:05:59Where's the other bit that I asked you to get here?
01:06:01Yep, that's it.
01:06:03Better than that.
01:06:04Half that size.
01:06:04Yeah.
01:06:05Australia is using a three-stick design with one end of the trigger toggle tied to their
01:06:10hanging rock.
01:06:11The other end set on a stable stick and an anchor holding it in place.
01:06:15The trap must be positioned so that when the cane rat takes the bait, the falling rock hits
01:06:20the prey and not the trap.
01:06:28I realized pretty quickly that part of my trigger mechanism was actually under where the
01:06:33rock was suspended.
01:06:35If I'd continued with that trigger mechanism there, when I triggered the rock, it would
01:06:39have smashed our mechanism and we would have had to start again.
01:06:42No, readjust now.
01:06:43Readjust now.
01:06:45Doing this stuff in a high-stress environment is about recognizing mistakes you've made very
01:06:50quickly and being able to pivot.
01:06:52Once you realize you've made a mistake, stop, change it, and that ends up being the fastest
01:06:57course of action in the end.
01:06:59Right.
01:06:59So I need to re-bang this in and put it in the wrong spot.
01:07:02So come over.
01:07:03Yep.
01:07:04Let's re-bang it in here.
01:07:08Um, can you hold this?
01:07:09Yep.
01:07:10Okay.
01:07:10If you come back farther, you have lever.
01:07:12Hold on, let me.
01:07:12It's heavy.
01:07:13Okay.
01:07:14Okay.
01:07:14And I'm sorry.
01:07:15I will try to do this fast.
01:07:16I'm trying to focus.
01:07:17I'm trying to get this done, but deadfall traps are very, very difficult.
01:07:22If you're just off by a 30 degree angle, it throws the entire trap off.
01:07:26And then-
01:07:26How's that going to trigger?
01:07:29Because-
01:07:29It was in front of it.
01:07:30It was like-
01:07:31Yeah.
01:07:32It wasn't.
01:07:32You know what I'm saying?
01:07:32Yeah, yeah.
01:07:34How's it supposed to drop if I'm holding this?
01:07:36If I let go, this is dropping.
01:07:37I don't understand how it's going to trigger.
01:07:39Oh, hey, hey.
01:07:40I got that.
01:07:41I got that figured out.
01:07:42Okay.
01:07:42Yep.
01:07:43I got that figured out.
01:07:44I've never done a trap like this before.
01:07:46So, you know, I'm following Jeff's lead.
01:07:49But from what I know, the rock has to balance itself with the trigger.
01:07:55And I'm the one holding the rock.
01:07:59Everything seems wrong.
01:08:00Okay.
01:08:01Slowly drop.
01:08:03It's not- I don't understand.
01:08:05This is not right.
01:08:07It's supposed to stay up.
01:08:09Oh, .
01:08:09This is the string.
01:08:11You're right.
01:08:11That's the string.
01:08:12Okay.
01:08:13I hear you.
01:08:14You're right.
01:08:14You're right.
01:08:15You're right.
01:08:16When you get in these challenges, your brain can't quite grasp everything that's going
01:08:22on.
01:08:22You're under pressure.
01:08:23It's so frustrating.
01:08:24But we have to be methodical.
01:08:26We have to be calm under pressure.
01:08:28And we have to do this right.
01:08:30It can be on either, right?
01:08:32I'm just-
01:08:33Yeah.
01:08:35I just feel like the really thick one's just going to be even harder to get in the ground.
01:08:38But it won't stick if it's thin.
01:08:40Okay.
01:08:41Rachel right now seems like she doesn't really have a full picture of exactly how this trap
01:08:45should be.
01:08:45Well, I'm still struggling to get this seven in the ground firmly.
01:08:51The key to winning these challenges is to be efficient with your movements because seconds
01:08:57count between first, second, third.
01:09:01This one's going a lot better.
01:09:02Oh, .
01:09:04That was my last hit.
01:09:05You .
01:09:07Oh, God damn it.
01:09:09What if we try it this smaller wide?
01:09:11We already have one.
01:09:12This is going to pull out.
01:09:14Because it's like pressure.
01:09:16It's not pulling straight.
01:09:16It's going to go further than this into the ground as it is though.
01:09:18It's just like a spring stick.
01:09:19It's pushing straight up this way.
01:09:20Or that it's sideways.
01:09:21But it's pushing straight up this way.
01:09:23Okay.
01:09:24I disagree, but okay.
01:09:25Do you want to try it?
01:09:26No.
01:09:26Go ahead.
01:09:27You sure?
01:09:28Yep.
01:09:28You can try it.
01:09:31It's not pulling it side to side.
01:09:32It's pushing it straight up.
01:09:33After our second stick breaks, I'm excited to have something I can offer up to help.
01:09:38Dan immediately says, no, I got to go get something else and takes off running.
01:09:41It's a little bit disheartening.
01:09:43We're not working well together.
01:09:44We're being incredibly inefficient and we're wasting seconds.
01:09:48That's good.
01:09:49Is that it?
01:09:49Yeah.
01:09:50Okay.
01:09:51Where's the rest of the paracord?
01:09:52Here.
01:09:53And now we got to go to hike.
01:09:55USA South is using a four stick trap variation, incorporating a paracord tripwire tied between
01:10:01two stable sticks.
01:10:02When an animal goes for the bait, the tripwire activates the trigger and releases the heavy
01:10:08rock capturing the animal.
01:10:10As we're going through this build, it comes time to test the trigger out on this trap.
01:10:16Tied to the other side.
01:10:17No sweat.
01:10:18Teal and I, we're concentrated on the problem at hand.
01:10:22We're not worried about what everybody else is doing.
01:10:24We're not worried about who's in the lead.
01:10:27It's just, let's finish this and move to the next step.
01:10:31That goes on that side?
01:10:33I thought I had to go all the way across.
01:10:35It has to go all the way across.
01:10:36Okay.
01:10:36I got this, Teal.
01:10:37Got it.
01:10:38Frank and I have a weird synchronicity.
01:10:40I go twice as fast as he does, but he's very paced, he's very methodical, he doesn't
01:10:45make mistakes, and he knows his craft well.
01:10:48Oh, I see, I see, I see.
01:10:51Okay, let some off of it.
01:10:53Total weight off?
01:10:54Yes, weight off.
01:10:57Okay.
01:10:57All right.
01:10:59Woo!
01:10:59Got the rock.
01:11:00Let me see where it goes.
01:11:00Let me see where it drops.
01:11:02That's perfect.
01:11:03Okay.
01:11:03All right.
01:11:04I'll tell you what, it's gonna be hard to beat the teamwork that Gabby and I are doing
01:11:08right now, and I expect we're gonna do quite well in this challenge.
01:11:12All right, I got your rock.
01:11:13Yep.
01:11:13Make sure I hit the same spot.
01:11:14I will.
01:11:14There you go.
01:11:15On the ax.
01:11:16Okay.
01:11:16Right here.
01:11:18Ow!
01:11:18Oh, sorry, sorry.
01:11:19And there's no slack, right?
01:11:21There's no slack, but you're on the wrong side.
01:11:24It's not gonna trip that way.
01:11:25It'll still work as long as we get a Y that's in there.
01:11:28It feels like we are not moving forward, and other teams are looking very close to being
01:11:34finished.
01:11:35It's incredibly frustrating.
01:11:37This will press down on here, and then we just need to tie this rope.
01:11:42Above your waist, with the bottom of it, it's gonna flip, because the top knot's tied
01:11:46to the top.
01:11:47Okay.
01:11:47So higher's better?
01:11:49Okay.
01:11:49We are against the best of the best out here, and we might be lacking a little bit of brawn,
01:11:55but I tell you what, we're making up for it with brains and communication, and we are
01:11:59still in this game.
01:12:00Okay, slowly let go.
01:12:04This is gonna work, Alexa.
01:12:05We got this.
01:12:08All right, this one feels solid.
01:12:09It's a good one.
01:12:10That feels good.
01:12:11Okay.
01:12:12We have our seven stick in the ground, and finally, Rachel and I are able to focus on
01:12:18the rest of this mission to get things right.
01:12:20A little higher.
01:12:21No, that's good.
01:12:22Leave it.
01:12:22Okay.
01:12:25I know we're behind, but I look over to my side, and I see Jeff and Kara still hard
01:12:30at work.
01:12:30It looks like they've been hung up on something, so I'm thinking maybe we still have a chance,
01:12:34but at this point, it's anybody's race, and there's just so much back and forth.
01:12:38It feels like total chaos.
01:12:40Got it tight?
01:12:40Yep.
01:12:41Okay, slowly let go.
01:12:44Okay, gourd.
01:12:45There's gotta be a gourd out here, so I'm gonna grab the gourd.
01:12:50All right.
01:12:51You got it.
01:12:52Feel good about it?
01:12:53Yeah, I feel good about that.
01:12:54Setting the trigger mechanism.
01:12:55Come on, Matt.
01:12:56You got it, buddy.
01:12:57Working hard right now.
01:12:58This is becoming a serious race.
01:13:00Team Australia.
01:13:01They're closing in the gap.
01:13:02They're coming in.
01:13:03It is down to the wire.
01:13:05Here we go.
01:13:07Oh, get the gourd.
01:13:08Where the the gourd?
01:13:10Oh, right here.
01:13:11Right here.
01:13:11Right here.
01:13:19Yeah.
01:13:21Yeah!
01:13:22Yeah!
01:13:22We got it!
01:13:25Yes!
01:13:26Yes!
01:13:26100 points is ours!
01:13:27I don't think anybody's seen that coming, including Till and I.
01:13:31We were in sixth place.
01:13:32We just assumed that we were just making it by the skin of our teeth.
01:13:36But Frank is gonna take things at the pace that makes sense.
01:13:40Do everything right the first time.
01:13:42And look at that.
01:13:43We just took first place, which is 100 points.
01:13:46It is a huge gap between first and second.
01:13:48I think we shocked each other on how well we were able to just concentrate on the most important
01:13:55thing, which is moving forward with each step.
01:13:58I told you we got this.
01:14:00I told you we had this.
01:14:01Good job.
01:14:02You got it, Matt.
01:14:05Yeah!
01:14:06Yeah, buddy!
01:14:08There we go.
01:14:1050 points.
01:14:11All right.
01:14:12Good job.
01:14:13Grab our...
01:14:14Team USA South has been sort of sneaky on this challenge.
01:14:18They were so far behind, I forgot they were even in the game.
01:14:21And they have made up for it in record time.
01:14:31We were the ones struggling at the bottom of the pack.
01:14:34And at the end of the day, we just fight harder.
01:14:37We come back stronger.
01:14:38We are not going home today!
01:14:42Oh, my God.
01:14:44As we're pounding in this next stick, I hear a gourd crack and another scream,
01:14:50it's Team Australia.
01:14:51And I know we're just falling further and further down the rankings.
01:14:54And I'm starting to lose hope.
01:14:56Lift it up over the thing.
01:14:58I'm trying.
01:14:59Take a step back.
01:15:01That's great.
01:15:02Perfect.
01:15:03See that it is just us and Team Texas.
01:15:06At this point, I don't need to look up to see how Jeff is doing.
01:15:10I will hear if Jeff wins from a mile away.
01:15:14I am focusing on finishing this thing and getting fourth place.
01:15:17Nope.
01:15:18I don't have it.
01:15:18Okay.
01:15:19It's okay.
01:15:19That's good.
01:15:20That's good.
01:15:20Jeff and I haven't worked together under pressure like this in a challenge before.
01:15:24We need to make sure that our communication is on point.
01:15:27I'm going to hammer it in into a fresh spot of dirt because that spot was too loose.
01:15:32When it comes to global showdown, the competition is so steep.
01:15:37Any mistake, any little thing that costs you points, and it can be the thing that determines whether you stay
01:15:44or go home.
01:15:45Okay.
01:15:46All right.
01:15:47Let's go.
01:15:47Let's go.
01:15:47Come on.
01:15:51Okay.
01:15:52This goes around here, right?
01:15:54With first through third place claimed, only USA Pacific and Texas remain in the challenge.
01:16:00The next team to finish will receive 30 points, and the other just 20.
01:16:07So now we need paracord from here to here.
01:16:09With their seven stick and straight stick hammered into the ground, Team Pacific is ready to set the trigger tied
01:16:15to their suspended rock.
01:16:19I am just lasered in trying to get this to work, holding the rock at the perfect position so that
01:16:24Dan can set the trigger, and then it's our time to shine.
01:16:28Okay.
01:16:28Let it go.
01:16:30Okay.
01:16:30Okay.
01:16:31Okay.
01:16:32Trigger.
01:16:32Trigger.
01:16:32Let's get the gourd.
01:16:33Gourd.
01:16:33My heart is bracing a mile a minute.
01:16:36That 10-point difference can be the difference in going to an elimination challenge or not.
01:16:40Almost there.
01:16:41Almost there.
01:16:42Ever so gently.
01:16:43Kara and I were a few seconds away from doing this.
01:16:46This is going to come down to the wire.
01:16:49Check.
01:16:50The gourd.
01:16:50Need the gourd.
01:16:52Trigger.
01:16:54Okay.
01:16:56Woo!
01:16:56Woo!
01:16:57Oh!
01:16:58We got her!
01:17:00I know we were yelling at each other.
01:17:02No, we were good.
01:17:03We were good.
01:17:03We were good.
01:17:03We'll work on it.
01:17:04We got it.
01:17:05The moment our rock hits that gourd and smashes it, all of the tension between me and Dan evaporates,
01:17:10and we are immediately hugging each other and celebrating.
01:17:13We did this together, and it feels really good to finish it together.
01:17:18Hey.
01:17:19Yeah.
01:17:20You ever heard of mine?
01:17:21Good job.
01:17:23It sucks.
01:17:24I want to be up at the top.
01:17:26We came here to win $200,000 to represent Texas.
01:17:29I'm just, I'm so frustrated because the beginning of this challenge went so well.
01:17:33Our torch was amazing.
01:17:35It was the best torch out there, and we were one of the first teams, and then it all went
01:17:38to hell.
01:17:39Fifth place.
01:17:40I mean, not what we wanted, but we walk out of here with 20 points.
01:17:45If we're going to make it to the top, we've got some adjustments to make.
01:17:48You know, our partnership, it's been really great up to this point.
01:17:52Jeff and I, we have to improve our communication because this is not where either one of us
01:17:56want to be in this competition.
01:17:57You kicked ass, okay?
01:17:58I know your arms and your hands are beat.
01:18:01You kicked ass.
01:18:04With the challenge complete, new point totals have shifted the overall rankings.
01:18:09Finishing in second allows USA East to take a slight lead over Australia, but Brazil and
01:18:15Mexico's last place finish keeps them both below the red line, vulnerable to an elimination
01:18:20challenge.
01:18:22Okay.
01:18:23Where are we at?
01:18:24Okay.
01:18:25We're still third.
01:18:27Still third.
01:18:27This scoreboard is a big visual reminder of where the big dogs are, and we want to be
01:18:34the big dogs, so we want to be on the top.
01:18:37With new milestones unlocked, teams will pick their assets based on the order of finish.
01:18:43Oh yeah, we get a set.
01:18:45Fantastic.
01:18:46With their torch build and first place finish adding 150 points to their total, USA South reaches
01:18:52both the 200 and 300 point milestones and chooses the kudu hides and fishing kits.
01:18:59Oh.
01:19:00Wow.
01:19:02Still on top.
01:19:02Look who's still up on top.
01:19:04Well done.
01:19:05USA East has added 200 more points to their total and can choose two new assets.
01:19:10They take the kudu hide and fishing kits.
01:19:13Priorities are shelter over food.
01:19:16We already have the bow.
01:19:18Yeah.
01:19:19Ten points shy of the 400 point milestone, Australia has only unlocked one additional asset
01:19:24and chooses the kudu hide.
01:19:26What do you think?
01:19:27Well...
01:19:27Will we take home some bows?
01:19:28I think that's a great idea.
01:19:31I'm more inclined to go fishing.
01:19:33That's a nice stable source of food.
01:19:35Okay.
01:19:35I like it.
01:19:36With 230 points and the choice of two items, Pacific chooses bows and fishing kits.
01:19:43Okay.
01:19:44I mean, hey.
01:19:45I mean, hey.
01:19:46You know what?
01:19:47We're above the red line, baby.
01:19:48That's what we wanted.
01:19:49We're above the red line.
01:19:50That's the goal.
01:19:51That was the goal.
01:19:51With 220 points, Texas has unlocked two assets and also selects the fishing kits and bows.
01:19:59While Brazil and Mexico remain at just 100 points for completing a boma and torch and can only choose one
01:20:06item.
01:20:07Fishing line.
01:20:08Yeah.
01:20:09We're both bow hunters, so, like, we need to keep that spirit alive and go for the bows.
01:20:16This is not good.
01:20:18No bueno.
01:20:31That was wild.
01:20:32That was wild.
01:20:34But we have assets.
01:20:38It's definitely a relief to be above that red line.
01:20:42Yeah, it is.
01:20:42And now we have a way to get food.
01:20:44Yep.
01:20:45That's critical.
01:20:46How is your back doing?
01:20:49My back hurts.
01:20:51Knocks something out of place.
01:20:53I'm not immobilized, but it definitely doesn't feel good.
01:20:58That sounds awful.
01:21:00I've never gone this hard on a challenge.
01:21:04I've never had to go this hard on a challenge.
01:21:07I've got to go get this in the water.
01:21:10You can relax and heal so that I don't lose you.
01:21:14I don't like my odds by myself.
01:21:21All right.
01:21:23So I'm about to pit our first hook in the water.
01:21:28Hopefully it proves fruitful.
01:21:32I'm definitely nervous that Dan's back injury might be a little more serious than he's letting
01:21:37on.
01:21:39And I feel like he's putting on a really brave face because Dan doesn't stop.
01:21:44He's actually an animal.
01:21:46No.
01:21:48Back is killing me.
01:21:51Jesus.
01:21:58I think I need to call the medic.
01:22:07it.
01:22:08Dan?
01:22:09Yeah.
01:22:10This is our medic.
01:22:11Yonka?
01:22:12Hi, Yonka.
01:22:13I hurt my lower back during the competition today.
01:22:18Okay.
01:22:18This point for me, where's the plane?
01:22:20Right here.
01:22:21Okay.
01:22:22Okay.
01:22:22On these spots?
01:22:23Yeah.
01:22:24Like the whole area.
01:22:25And they weren't hurting this morning?
01:22:26No.
01:22:27Okay.
01:22:27Have you been drinking enough water and fluids?
01:22:29Yes, a lot.
01:22:30Okay.
01:22:31Because lower back pain can be a sign of dehydration or a pulled muscle, as well as more serious injuries
01:22:37such as spinal damage or kidney infection, medics will closely monitor Dan's symptoms.
01:22:42Try not to strain yourself.
01:22:44Maybe take a lay down for a little bit and then see how it goes.
01:22:52It's been such a grueling four days.
01:22:57Me hurting myself because I'm going so hard is not a sustainable way to get to day 40.
01:23:04If I get hurt and I have the bulk of the strength in this partnership, I don't think we're going
01:23:09to last long.
01:23:12I am really concerned about Dan.
01:23:14I know he'll do whatever it takes to win, but if he hurts himself worse, that's the end of our
01:23:22journey.
01:23:22That's the end of our challenge.
01:23:23And we are walking out of here with nothing.
