00:00We've all heard stories of the Mandalorian bounty hunter and a child.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best hidden easter eggs and deep cut references
00:13in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
00:15We will be spoiling what happens in the movie, so this is your last warning for what's ahead.
00:20Are you scared? You should be.
00:24Good job, baby.
00:26No. 10. Tashi PlayStation.
00:31This is from, we built this from a set piece from Tashi Station that was never used in the actual
00:39films, right?
00:40Amazing.
00:41But they filmed back in the 70s.
00:42One thing Star Wars loves to do is recycle old props and forgotten background details.
00:47A great example comes from a deleted scene in the original movie.
00:51While Luke catches up with Biggs at Tashi Station, a strange arcade-style machine can be seen in the background.
00:57That obscure prop later returned in the Book of Boba Fett, and now it shows up again in The Mandalorian
01:02and Grogu.
01:03You can spot it several times inside a Delphi base.
01:06Reference books call the game computer-assisted pool, though behind-the-scenes footage makes it look more like a version
01:12of asteroids.
01:13Either way, it's nice to know X-Wing pilots wind down by playing video games.
01:18The whole, our whole crew is always on the hunt for how do we put more stuff in the margins
01:24and how do you add detail.
01:26Number 9. The Dragon Snake Finally Gets Its Meal.
01:30R2? R2!
01:35Where are you?
01:38Din Djarin faces plenty of dangerous creatures in the movie, including the massive Dragon Snake.
01:43Long-time fans may remember that it first debuted in The Empire Strikes Back.
01:47In that film, the creature tried to swallow R2-D2 on Dagobah.
01:52We only saw part of its body before it spit the droid back out.
01:55Decades later, the Dragon Snake appeared again in Star Wars The Clone Wars, where it once again failed to catch
02:01Obi-Wan.
02:14This time, though, the creature finally succeeds.
02:17After years of striking out against heroes, the Dragon Snake at last gets a proper meal out of the twins.
02:23Hopefully, they sit a little better than R2 did.
02:26If you're saying coming here was a bad idea, I'm beginning to agree with you.
02:31Number 8. INT4 Interceptor
02:44The movie's opening mission includes a deep cut that goes back to the original toy line.
02:49In the 70s and 80s, Kenner created tons of Star Wars toys, including vehicles that were never in the movies.
02:55One of those designs, the Imperial Troop Transport, later became canon in Star Wars Rebels before showing up in live
03:02action.
03:03Now, the Mandalorian and Grogu brings another forgotten toy to life with the INT4 Interceptor.
03:08The vehicle looks like an AT-ST head with wings attached to it.
03:12Unfortunately, we only get a quick look before Mando destroys it as it flies away.
03:17Number 7. Hugo Durant
03:26The vendor we meet on Shikari has a deep behind-the-scenes background.
03:30Hugo Durant is a direct homage to Jon Favreau's love of street cuisine.
03:34That connection inspired him to bring on Chef Roy Choi to not only craft the film's culinary style,
03:39but also make Hugo's flat meat fry a real dish anyone can cook.
03:43So these are just sliced onions that we put into a dye.
03:47I've never done turquoise onions before. Do I have to season as I would with regular onions as I go?
03:52Yes. So we have some salt.
03:53Of course, tracking a mudhorn egg might be a hard ingredient to find.
03:57But if you've been watching Star Wars from the beginning, and if you've been watching The Mandalorian,
04:01there was a mudhorn, which is where they get their insignia from, and this was the egg that he had
04:06to go find.
04:07And this was the yolk.
04:09There it is.
04:09That rare delicacy was introduced in Season 1 of The Mandalorian.
04:13Hugo's first name is a reference, too, as it's shared with a film directed by his voice actor Martin Scorsese.
04:19The Durant surname also links him to Rio Durant from Solo, A Star Wars Story,
04:24another Ardenian who happens to be voiced by Favreau.
04:27A species called the Ardenians, which is what I played in Solo.
04:31So I was a cook in the Solo movie, He Has a Food Truck, in this one.
04:35I gave our characters the same last names, so our characters are related in theory.
04:39Number 6, Embo's Ship and New Pet
04:55Longtime fans probably recognize this Caillouzo immediately, but his ship is an even deeper cut.
05:01The guillotine finally made its live-action debut after years of quietly existing in other material.
05:06Originally designed for an unused Clone Wars arc, the ship later resurfaced in some comics and the novel Dark Disciple.
05:13And yes, the ship absolutely resembles Embo's hat.
05:16The film also sneaks in another nod through his new companion, Kaibu.
05:20Embo used to travel with a different Anuba named Marek.
05:23That wolf-like alien helped him fight Count Dooku, Darth Maul, and Anakin Skywalker.
05:28Marek sadly died somewhere around the original trilogy,
05:31which explains why Embo adopted Kaibu by the time of the movie.
05:44Come on, let's get out of here!
05:50Number 5, Coins Collection
05:52This Imperial Warlord basically owns a museum for rare Star Wars creatures.
05:57Throughout his mansion and office, fans can spot animals and trophies pulled from across the franchise.
06:02One cage contains a fuzzball, the small flying creature first seen in Captain Eo before later appearing in Skeleton Crew.
06:09Hooter!
06:12Listen, the command considers us a bunch of losers.
06:15But we're gonna do it right this time because we're the best.
06:19If we don't, we'll be drummed out of the core.
06:21Mounted on the walls are the heads of Anexu and Areeke,
06:24the same arena beasts from Attack of the Clones.
06:34Sharp-eyed viewers can also spot the four-armed Sandbeast defeated by Boba Fett,
06:39along with the Vexus Serpent that Rey heals in Episode 9.
06:43It's a fun collection of monsters hidden in the background.
06:46Number 4, New Republic Pilots
06:58There are several cameos that probably only hardcore fans noticed right away.
07:03Carson Teva returns once again, played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee.
07:07His most recent appearances include The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
07:10The movie also sneaks in cameos from Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Lee Isaac Chung, and Dave Filoni.
07:17All four have directed episodes of The Mandalorian, and all of them appear as New Republic Pilots.
07:22Yeah, I got a clear signal on the tracking beacon.
07:24Copy that.
07:44Another fun cameo belongs to Doug Chang,
07:46who can be seen in the background when Din Djarin delivers his bounty.
07:50You definitely know his work, even if you don't know who he is.
07:53Chang designed the look of the prequel trilogy as head of the art department,
07:56and later, he became Lucasfilm's executive design director.
08:01Number 3, The Hidden Syndicate
08:03The Star Wars universe has five major crime factions that run the underworld.
08:07Crimson Dawn, Black Sun, The Hutts, and Pykes are the groups who have gotten the most attention.
08:12That's what makes this appearance from the droid Gautra such a big deal.
08:16Even though The Syndicate has been mentioned in books and comics before,
08:19this is its first major on-screen role.
08:22Now where is The Mandalorian you know of?
08:26Tatooine.
08:27What?
08:29The Mando I know of is on Tatooine.
08:33I've spent much time on Tatooine. I've never seen a Mandalorian there.
08:37My information is good, I tell you.
08:39The city of Mos Pelgo. I swear it by the Gautra.
08:42The Gautra was made up entirely of repurposed battle droids fighting for freedom after the Clone Wars.
08:47They often worked as hired muscle for other groups while carrying out their own criminal operations on the side.
08:53Unfortunately for the twins, having an army of battle droids wasn't enough to save them in the end.
08:59Number 2, BDX Droids
09:01Today we're playtesting our new legged walking character platform at Disneyland's Star Wars Galaxy's Edge.
09:07Walking them through the land to help us better understand what types of interactions really resonate with our guests.
09:12What's wrong with a little corporate synergy?
09:14By now, many Star Wars fans have probably visited Galaxy's Edge in the Disney parks.
09:20The themed Star Wars land is set on the planet of Batuu and features many characters from far, far away.
09:26In recent years, Imagineers introduced roaming BDX droids inspired by BD-1,
09:31Cal's companion from Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor.
09:34These small robots wander around the park, interact with guests, and even pose for pictures.
09:39The guest's reaction has been tremendous.
09:42Shock and surprise. Oh my gosh. Oh, it's so cute.
09:45They have so much personality.
09:47Everyone of every age seemed to connect with them on some level.
09:50They feel perfectly at home in-universe.
09:53So seeing them wander around Adelphi base was a welcome sight.

10:22Number 1. R2's Chess Move
10:34The trailers made it pretty clear that Din Djarin would end up fighting inside a giant version of Djarik,
10:40the holographic chess game first seen aboard the Millennium Falcon.
10:44One clever easter egg comes during the fight itself.
10:46At one point, the Mantellian Savarip slams down the Kintan Strider onto the ground.
10:51This is the same move R2 used against Chewbacca in their holochess match.
10:55The moment also might suggest a fun detail about the game itself.
10:59That move might be common enough between those creatures that it ended up getting programmed into the official game.
11:05Did we miss any huge easter eggs?
