A rescue operation is underway in the Bhatkal coastal region after a tragic incident where a group of 14 people, mostly women laborers, went to collect shellfish (kappe chippu) near a river connected to the sea. Several individuals went missing, with at least one confirmed death (Umesh Nayak). Three people were rescued, with two shifted to Manipal Hospital and one treated locally. The state government announced Rs. 5 lakh compensation for the deceased and committed to covering medical expenses for the injured. Former MLA Sunil Nayak and senior police officials visited the site. D.C.M.D.K. leader Shiva Kumar also responded to the incident. Local resident Mastappa Nayak, speaking to the media, described the river as being connected to the sea within 25 meters, making it extremely dangerous. Search and rescue operations continue for the remaining missing persons as families gather in grief outside the hospital.
