00:01I stay in bed till 11.45
00:04And then I put my clothes on
00:05I thought you hadn't taken them off
00:09Oh
00:10I guess I didn't, I just lied
00:17And I go downstairs to buy cigarettes
00:19And I break a $10 bill
00:21Because the cigarettes are 56 cents
00:23God, they are
00:24And I say, is Allen Ginsberg there?
00:29And he says, who's calling?
00:31And I say, it's Peter Hujar
00:32I'm supposed to photograph you
00:34The Times
00:39I get my camera stuff together
00:40I had a flash that there was something
00:42Sort of bohemian poet about it
00:44And I'd be much snazzier in my red ski jacket
00:46Good choice, yes
00:47I just think it's more like Lower East Side
00:53I photographed Ginsberg
00:55And he sits down in the lotus position
00:57Looking very Buddha
00:58Right in the doorway
00:59And he starts to chant
01:00And I really think
01:01Well, I can't interrupt God
01:07I realize that to do good portraits
01:09Have to like
01:10Have the time to really look at it
01:12Really see what I'm doing
01:13Sometimes I just stand and stare at it
01:16And it's even rather pleasurable
01:21I often have a feeling that in my day
01:23Nothing much happens
01:24And I've wasted it
01:25Well, now you know
01:26I've wasted another day
01:32That's why I'm doing this, actually
01:33To find out how people fill up their days
01:44That's what happened
01:45That's the way it happened
01:46And I've had a feeling that in my day
01:53So I don't know
01:54That's what I'm doing
01:55I can't wait to see that
