00:30So star Melissa Roxburgh is here to talk about what we can expect from season two

02:34We finished filming in the beginning of December
02:37And then I went home for a little bit
02:39Canada, right?
02:40Canada, Vancouver, yeah
02:41Saw the family
02:42And then tried to get some sunshine
02:44And now I'm back here
02:46And now you're back just in time
02:47For the premiere of season two
02:49Exactly
02:50I got to check out the premiere
02:52Which I had to
02:53Because the season finale for season one
02:56The cliffhanger was almost unbearable
02:57And we've had to wait quite a long time
02:59I know
03:00We kept everyone waiting a little longer than normal this time
03:03So what is that like for you?
03:04Because it was such a cliffhanger
03:05We don't know who got shot
03:07I won't spoil anything
03:08What was it like for you having that secret for so long?
03:12I mean, the way that they've put out trailers and teased it
03:15I think they've done a good job of keeping it a little ambiguous
03:18But I'm really curious to see how many people like know who got shot
03:25But yeah, I don't know
03:26It's everyone asks and I kind of want to give it away
03:29But no
03:30What is it like for you though when you get a script like that
03:33That is that much of a cliffhanger, that much fun
03:35I mean, it needed to end with a bang
03:38Not literally, but literally
03:40Yeah, I think season one was so strong that the way that they ended it was good
03:44So where do we pick up in season two?
03:47We pick up right where we left off
03:49We get to find out who got shot in the first episode back
03:53We also, if you guys remember the death date
03:56Of us kind of figuring out that we had a certain amount of time left to live
04:00So we have to figure out what that means for the rest of our lives
04:04If we can stop it
04:06Yeah, and like continuing to kind of figure out where we went with the plane itself
04:12And then also Ben has, you know, Grace is pregnant
04:15So they're trying to figure out who the baby daddy is
04:18There's a lot of loose threads still
04:20That's what I love about this show
04:22Is that, you know, from the pilot
04:24There are so many questions that need to be answered
04:26Yeah
04:26And then as we get through the season
04:28You guys answer a lot of questions
04:30And it's very fulfilling in that way
04:31But at the same time
04:33Get more questions
04:33I know
04:35And so that's what keeps us coming back
04:37And that's what's so fun
04:37You mentioned the death dates or the expiration dates
04:40Which were a really big reveal in season one
04:44How do you think that impacts your character, Mikayla?
04:47I mean, Mikayla and Ben have kind of always played
04:49Not opposite
04:50Like they're on the same team
04:52But Ben, one being science-based
04:54He also believes that maybe
04:56We shouldn't just listen to the callings
04:57And maybe he can stop this death date
05:01Mikayla has kind of taken the approach of faith
05:04And maybe everything happens for a reason
05:07So she's not necessarily fighting the death date
05:09And she's more listening to the callings
05:10Going with what they say
05:13But then later in the season
05:15She kind of doesn't do that
05:17And we see the consequences of that
05:19And it seems like she has a really special relationship with Cal
05:23More so than like his dad
05:24Or some of the other
05:25Oh no
05:26You know like
05:26Don't tell Josh that
05:27Okay
05:28He feels like there a little more
05:30In sync with the calling
05:31Yeah
05:31I mean
05:32I think
05:32He's also very creepy
05:33I have to say it
05:34The kid?

05:36Kids with powers are always just a little creepy to me
05:39And he's a very good actor
05:40He does a great job

05:49Mikayla's made a lot of mistakes in her life
05:51But at the end of the day
05:51As far as family goes
05:52She would kill for them
05:54So
05:54I think that's where the relationship
05:56She has that with Olive as well
05:58But since Cal went through
05:59What she did
06:01I think there's that extra bond there
06:02Yeah
06:03For sure
06:03What is the difference in playing Mikayla
06:05Now versus before?
06:07Because coming in with the pilot
06:08There were so many
06:09Like I said
06:09Questions that needed to be answered
06:11But now that you understand her world
06:13A little bit more
06:14Has that changed how you approach her?
06:15Yeah
06:15I think season one
06:16Mikayla was a bit more of a hot mess
06:18She comes back
06:20Her fiance's married to somebody else
06:21We reveal that she accidentally killed her best friend
06:24In a drunk driving accident
06:26Now she's hearing voices in her head
06:28It's like there was no
06:29There was no win for her
06:31But I think going into season two
06:33With her even understanding the world
06:35A little bit more
06:36She's kind of settled into it
06:39Not come to terms with it necessarily
06:41But understood that this is the new reality
06:43That she's in
06:45And she's trying to be better for it
06:47So the decisions that she's making
06:49Are all to be better
06:50Like she left a lot of mistakes in her past
06:53So now every decision that she has moving forward
06:55Is her attempt to become a better person
06:57To do right by people
06:58She definitely does not get it right all the time
07:01She makes a lot more mistakes
07:03And she you know
07:05I don't want to say betrays
07:07But she you know
07:08Crosses lines with a few people
07:11And we get to see dynamics shift a little bit
07:15In season two for her and Jared
07:17And her and Ben
07:18And a few other people
07:19Let's talk about Jared
07:21Because a lot of people were shipping them
07:23Very early on
07:24Yeah
07:24And we got some resolution there
07:27But now we're still sort of
07:29Trying to figure out where they're at
07:31Yeah
07:32I guess I can't ask for like what happens
07:34But how fun is it to play that dynamic
07:36Knowing that the fans
07:38Really kind of want them back together
07:40It's fun
07:41And it's
07:42I mean season one was such a build up
07:44For those two characters
07:45That when they finally got together
07:47You want it to just be the end
07:50You're like just give these guys a break
07:53But it's complicated
07:55I mean it's not like she cheated
07:57It's not a good situation
07:59So I think she's in trying to be a better person
08:02Still struggling with that part of it too
08:04And she she wants to be a good person
08:06So she kind of backs off from Jared again
08:10And you know at the end of the episode
08:13A gun goes off
08:14There's three people in a room
08:15Maybe one of them doesn't make it
08:17So we see I know you know
08:20Dynamics shift based on that as well
08:22So yeah I started to not really like Jared
08:25At the end of
08:26Okay
08:26He got a little controlling right
08:27And it was like I get that you love her
08:30But you got to trust what she's telling you
08:32Passion baby
08:32You know like just there's limits
08:34And we don't need a you situation
08:37We were just talking
08:38We binged it
08:39We binged it
08:39So I was actually okay with her
08:42Kind of separating from him
08:43Because I feel like he got a little too
08:45Too involved
08:46I mean they came in hot and heavy
08:47I think it just needed a little breather
08:49And then going into season two
08:50Now Zeke's in the picture as well
08:53And they have a lot more in common
08:55He understands what Michaela's been through
08:57So you know there's just an understanding
08:59Between them too
09:00And an attraction
09:02I mean you have to have a triangle
09:04You gotta have a triangle
09:06You have to have a triangle
09:06This triangle is like especially interesting though
09:08Because two of them are like seeing callings
09:10Every 30 minutes
09:11That's crazy
09:12Yeah it's hard to compete with that sort of connection
09:14When you're also not getting the callings
09:16Like this isn't fair

10:41And all these

10:51Checked in on the fan theories

12:15The first time you're leading
12:16Like a network

12:16But you didn't grow up
12:18In like a Hollywood family at all
12:20No gosh no
12:21My dad's a pastor
12:22And my mom played Wimbledon
12:25So there's no arts in our family
12:27I was definitely the black sheep
12:29For a long time
12:30I think
12:30They didn't discourage me
12:32But I think they thought
12:33I was a little quacky
12:34To want to go into
12:36To this industry
12:37You know
12:38It's not easy at all
12:39So
12:41That's why I said
12:41You don't come from
12:42A Hollywood family
12:43Because there's no
12:44Oftentimes that helps
12:45Yeah
12:45If you're really coming from
12:46Yeah
12:47It's like an average family
12:48It's so hard
12:49No I actually
12:49Like my parents
12:50Really do support me
12:52But at the same time
12:53I think that they
12:53They worried that I would
12:54Get a little lost
12:55Because I mean
12:55It is
12:56It's a big industry
12:57You can get cut down
12:58But now that things
13:00Are kind of doing okay
13:02They're quite supportive
13:03Yeah
13:03So
13:03What was your road like?
13:06Like did you go to
13:07Theater school
13:08Or how did you get into acting?
13:10I think I'd always wanted
13:11To do it in hindsight
13:13You know
13:14I was that kid
13:14That stole my parents
13:15Video camera
13:16And tried to get my siblings
13:17To be a part of
13:17Terrible movies
13:18That I created
13:20But then my parents
13:21Made me wait until
13:21After high school
13:22To really get into it
13:24So
13:26Yeah
13:26I got in touch
13:27With this acting coach
13:28Who helped me find an agent
13:30And then
13:30I you know
13:32Kept at it for 10 years
13:33And
13:34Finally it kind of clicked
13:35What was the first
13:36Big role that you booked
13:38That you were like
13:39I'm an actor?
13:40I was definitely delusional
13:42Because it was
13:43Diary of a Wimpy Kid
13:44Which was one of the first
13:44Auditions I'd gone out for
13:45And I thought
13:46Oh it'll be like this
13:47From here on out
13:48No
13:49I don't think I booked
13:50Another job for two years
13:51After that
13:52And then
13:53You know
13:54It's just like
13:54There's ups and downs
13:56Like when this show ends
13:57Maybe I won't work again
13:58For a while
13:59A long time
14:00And who knows
14:01But you know
14:02You just kind of
14:02Gotta stick with it
14:03Yeah
14:04But what I
14:05What I've learned about you
14:06Is that you don't put
14:07All of your eggs in one basket
14:08I know you do a lot of
14:09Philanthropy
14:10And a lot of different work
14:11Specifically with the
14:12International Rescue Committee
14:13Right?
14:13You're an ambassador for them
14:14Yeah
14:15I'm on their
14:15Leadership team
14:16Here in New York
14:18I kind of owe that
14:18To my parents
14:20One with my dad
14:20Being a pastor
14:21He
14:22Took us on a lot of
14:23Trips to
14:25Like he works with a soccer team
14:26Called Athletes in Action
14:28So they got to travel a lot
14:29And he got to take us
14:31To places like
14:32You know
14:33Guatemala
14:33Mexico City
14:34And Albania
14:35So we got to see
14:36A world outside of
14:37North America
14:38And I feel like
14:39Until you actually
14:40Step outside
14:41It's easy to think that
14:42You know
14:43This little bubble
14:43That you're in
14:44Is just
14:44That's it
14:45But as soon as
14:46You step outside
14:47You realize
14:47What's actually going on
14:48In the world
14:49And what you need
14:50To do to help
14:50And those were
14:51Mission trips
14:52Or sometimes
14:53Yes and no
14:54Like sometimes
14:54They were missions trips
14:55And other times
14:56They were just
14:56Purely
14:57For the sake of
14:58Like showing his kids
15:00That there's a world
15:01Out there
15:01That's not
15:02North America
15:04And so
15:04Coming out of that
15:05As an adult now
15:06I just
15:06I wanted to do
15:07Everything that I could
15:08To give back
15:10In that way
15:11And the IRC
15:12Has this program
15:13Called Gen R
15:14Which is for
15:14Younger people
15:15Who want to get
15:16Into that kind of thing
15:18And they help them
15:19Bring into volunteer positions
15:21They help fundraise
15:22Advocate
15:23I'm actually going to
15:25Go to Jordan
15:26With them this year
15:26So they've done
15:28A really good job
15:29Of integrating
15:30Young people
15:31Into helping
15:32Essentially
15:32And then overseas
15:34They work in over
15:3440 countries
15:35They have
15:36You know
15:36Medical aid
15:37They do counseling
15:38They run camps
15:40For the kids
15:40They're helping
15:42With the camps
15:42At the border
15:44Right now
15:44So they're doing
15:45A lot overseas
15:46And locally
15:48Is there an initiative
15:49That you are
15:50Specifically sort of
15:52Lending your efforts
15:53And time to
15:54What do you mean by that
15:55Like within the organization
15:56Because you just mentioned
15:57All the amazing work
15:58That they do
15:58Is there one specific
16:00I guess
16:00Initiative that they're
16:02Doing this year
16:02That you're really
16:03Excited about
16:03Or passionate about
16:04I mean
16:05Yes and no
16:06Like on the leadership team
16:07We're constantly
16:08Trying to find ways
16:08To raise money
16:09For the organization
16:10But also to get
16:11The word out
16:11So there's not
16:12Necessarily like
16:13A specific thing
16:14Personally
16:15I like the women's
16:17Aspect of it
16:18Just because I feel
16:18Like that's a super
16:19Underrepresented
16:21Like portion
16:23Which is why
16:24There's another organization
16:26Called A21
16:27Run by Christine Kane
16:28And that's for
16:29Sex trafficking
16:30And slavery
16:31And so
16:32She's created
16:33This organization
16:34Which has become
16:35Super helpful
16:36To women
16:37All over the world
16:38In the sex industry
16:40So yeah
16:41That's such an important
16:42I've seen more and more
16:43Work being done
16:44In that arena
16:44And it's something
16:44I'm very passionate
16:45About as well
16:46Because it's happening
16:47Around us
16:48And I think a lot of
16:49People don't realize that
16:50They think it's something
16:50That's happening
16:51In different countries
16:52Or in really seedy places
16:53And it's literally
16:54Happening next door
16:55To a lot of people
16:56Yeah
16:56Exactly
16:57I mean
16:58In places like
16:59Syria and Somalia
17:01And stuff too
17:01Like the dynamics
17:03Over there
17:03They don't allow women
17:04To really like
17:06Get out of that
17:07Either
17:07And so that
17:08The things that
17:10They do over there
17:11Really allow women
17:12To become educated
17:13As well
17:13Which they wouldn't
17:14Have the opportunity
17:15To do
17:16That's so cool
17:16That you're getting
17:17To use this platform
17:18For things that
17:19You really care about
17:20Is that something
17:20That's always been
17:21Important to you
17:21To just make sure
17:22That the work
17:22Also balances out
17:24With your life
17:25I mean
17:25We
17:25Like the people
17:26In this industry
17:27If you are given
17:27A good platform
17:29I think that
17:30It's necessary
17:32And important
17:32To use it
17:33For things that
17:34Actually matter
17:35And that
17:36Makes the world
17:37Better
17:37I know that's
17:38Kind of a cliche
17:38Thing to say
17:39But I really do
17:41Like I think
17:42That if you're
17:42Just using it
17:43For selfish benefits
17:44That helps no one
17:45I just think
17:46It doesn't last
17:46As long either
17:47And you don't
17:48Get to make
17:48Great shows

18:35Like we all go through
18:36Bouts where we're

18:43You really like
18:44And stick to them
18:45Surround yourself
18:46With people who
18:46Encourage you
18:48Choose really good
18:49Role models as well
18:50Like that
18:51I think that's
18:52The most important thing
18:53That I can say
18:54Like role models
18:55Who value things
18:57That are important
18:59And to

19:01Just understanding
19:02That we literally
19:03We're all in the same boat
19:05Whether we show it

19:07Where we're up

19:12When you see a woman
19:13In her 30s and 40s
19:14She still has the same

19:15You just learn to
19:16Kind of deal with it
19:17And accept that
19:18It's a part of life
19:18Because I think that
19:20Like with social media
19:20And stuff too
19:21It's easy to look
19:22At pictures of women
19:23Or to look at
19:24You know
19:25Women in media
19:26And go they have
19:27Everything together
19:27They have all the confidence
