00:03Thank you for supporting your PBS station.
00:06Wild Crads!
00:08Hey, we're the Crad Brothers.
00:10I'm Martin.
00:11And I'm Chris.
00:12And we're going out on the biggest habitat on Earth.
00:14The ocean.
00:15Looking for the largest creatures in the world.
00:17The whales!
00:22Early morning, seas are calm.
00:24Perfect time for looking for whales.
00:27Whoa!
00:27We're going right into the fog.
00:30It's a thick mist.
00:31How are we ever going to find a whale in this?
00:34Because of the mist, we can't see the whales.
00:36So we're going to stop right here and listen for the sound of their spouting.
00:42Yeah!
00:43Did you hear that?
00:43There's whales all around us in the mist.
00:45I think I saw something down there.
00:47Whoa!
00:49Fin whales!
00:50The second largest whale in the world.
00:52A fin whale can live to be over 100 years old.
00:55Tiny little thin, but a big animal.
00:58They're fast.
01:00Come up, breathe, and then dive again.
01:02Some whales can hold their breath for over an hour.
01:05But when they're traveling like this, they stay under for only five minutes.
01:08Look at all the swirls.
01:10They've gone down.
01:10All right, let's keep moving.
01:15Even though whales are the biggest animals on earth, they can be the hardest to hang out
01:20with.
01:20They live in the water, often freezing cold water.
01:23They swim fast and dive deep.
01:25Some whales, like the sperm whale, dive so deep, they're impossible to follow down there where
01:31they hunt giant squid.
01:34Imagine if we had whale powers and could join whales wherever they go.
01:39And do whatever they do.
01:41What if?
01:49On a adventure with the coolest creatures, from the oceans to the trees.
01:54The brothers' crabs are going places you never get to see.
01:58Hanging with their creature friends.
02:00Get ready, it's the hour.
02:02We're going to save some animals today with Creature Power.
02:33Whale of a Squid
02:46Navigation systems online.
02:51Viewing port activated.
02:55All right, let's take this new emphasis up for a test drive.
03:02Woo-hoo!
03:04Yeah!
03:05Woo-hoo!
03:12This is an awesome sub.
03:15It's so maneuverable.
03:17And what a view.
03:19You can see everything going on all around us.
03:22And who knows what's happening down there in the depths.
03:26There's the question.
03:27Can this sub go deep enough to find out?
03:31Whoa, incoming!
03:34Arrow squid.
03:35And they're feeding on little amphipots.
03:38Tiny microscopic animals floating in the water.
03:41Whoa, these squid are squishy and slimy.
03:46Oh, and their suction cups kind of tickle.
03:51Hey, Aviva, I love this exploration valve feature.
03:55Oh yeah, this amphi-sub rocks the deep sea.
03:59Fantastico.
04:00Got one more thing for the sub before you deep dive.
04:03Just hang out there until I can finish up this robot arm.
04:05Whew, where's my mango juice?
04:08Oh, in the fridge.
04:10Might as well test the robot arm.
04:26Guys, this robot arm is going to be a great add-on to the sub.
04:30Perfect for deep sea discovery.
04:31I like these exploration valves better.
04:34I can pet wild squid pets.
04:37This is Squiddo.
04:38Squid-tacular.
04:40Squid-sicle.
04:41Martin, are you squidding me?
04:43Ha-ha, squidding me.
04:44Good one, Chris.
04:46There's no way you can come up with names for a thousand squids.
04:49We'll see.
04:50This little guy is...
04:51Ha-ha!
04:52He nipped me.
04:53Your fangs.
04:54Whoa, check that.
04:56Make it beaks.
04:58A squid has a beak like a parrot.
05:00Whoa.
05:01Aviva, are you sure this sub has what it takes to take on the mystery of the deep sea?
05:06I mean, really deep sea.
05:08Well, that's what I'm designing it for.
05:10Small squid attacks are one thing.
05:12But what about bigger ones?
05:13Or the water pressure?
05:15I know.
05:16The deep sea is harder to explore than outer space.
05:18I'm working on it.
05:20We need a sub that can go as deep as a sperm whale and keep up with him.
05:24Nobody has ever followed a sperm whale into the deep before.
05:28I love the challenge.
05:29But it might not be something I can crack in a day.
05:32Not unless I have some big inspiration.
05:35Uh, how about this?
05:37Sperm whale at six o'clock!
05:41Whoa!
05:43Now that's a huge whale!
05:45Uh, no.
05:46That's a huge whale!
05:48Whoa!
05:50Whoa!
05:51Whoa!
05:51Whoa!
05:52Whoa!
05:52Whoa!
05:53Whoa!
05:53Whoa!
05:54Whoa!
05:54Whoa!
05:55Whoa!
05:55Whoa!
05:57Whoa!
05:59Is that big enough inspiration for you, Aviva?
06:02Might be.
06:03It might be!
06:06Whale powers!
06:08Let's see.
06:08A sperm whale can dive deeper than any other whale.
06:11She has flexible ribs that can fold up under intense pressure.
06:15And she has a thick layer of fat to keep her warm in the cold, deep waters.
06:19I can learn a lot from these whales.
06:21This is going to be the best creature power suit yet.
06:27Whoa!
06:27What was that?
06:29It's coming from the big mama sperm whale's head!
06:36Okay, it's true.
06:38Sperm whales are the loudest animal in the world.
06:43They're echolocating on us, yeah, that booming sound, comes out of her big bumpy head, bounces
06:48off us, the sound waves travel back to her lower jaw, which takes the sound up to her
06:53ear.
06:54Then to her brain, that's what you call sonar, and the sperm whale gets a sound picture of
07:03us.
07:03Or her lunch.
07:17Whoa!
07:18She gulped down hundreds in one mouthful.
07:20That's like a bathtub full of squid in one bite.
07:24And she can eat eight bathtubs full of slimy squid a day.
07:34Aww!
07:35Look how closely the cat follows his mom.
07:38He's cute.
07:40I'd say looks about a year old.
07:42I'd say looks like a little rascal.
07:45Oh, I'm going to have to come up with a funny, playful little name for this guy.
07:49Can't be too little of a name.
07:51He's already as big as a minivan, following a mom who's as big as a school bus.
07:57They're heading towards you, Tortuga.
08:00Wow!
08:01The sperm whale is the largest tooth predator that ever lived on planet Earth.
08:06There she blows!
08:11Do sperm whales rule the sea or what?
08:13Almost, but not quite.
08:15They can get ganged up on by pods of hunting killer whales.
08:18Drifting fishing nets called ghost nets tangle them up.
08:22And then there are the stories of epic battles with giant squid.
08:25But no one's ever seen it because they meet in the deep.
08:29What's going on up there?
08:30The whales are each taking a big breath in through their blowhole.
08:34A whale breath is the same amount of air that fills a car.
08:37They must be getting ready for a deep dive.
08:40Yeah, going deeper looking for bigger squid.
08:43Oh!
08:44Oh, hey!
08:45We're not a beach ball or a bumper boat.
08:48Bumper!
08:49That's it!
08:50You're Bumper!
08:51The newest member of the Wild Kratts team.
08:54Here we go!
08:55Nobody's ever followed hunting sperm whales into the depths.
08:59We're with you, Bumper!
09:00Okay, Aviva.
09:01How deep can this sub go?
09:04Deeper than any mobile sub ever created by humans.
09:08I hope.
09:10Losing all the sun's light at 600 feet.
09:12Leaving the ocean sunlit zone.
09:14Entering twilight zone.
09:16Sub lights on.
09:18Oh, we're going deeper.
09:22Uh, Chris, do you ever get the feeling we're being watched?
09:26Sure.
09:27The Wild Kratts crew is always keeping an eye on us.
09:31An eye the size of a basketball?
09:34There's only one creature on the planet with an eye this big.
09:37A giant squid!
09:39Ha!
09:39Now that's a whale and a squid!
09:43Behind your bumper!
09:45Oh no!
09:46Squid attack!
09:56She heard Bumper's distress call!
09:58Bumper's mom to the rescue!
10:01Whoa!
10:02That's gotta be the world's most powerful head butt!
10:05Because the sperm whale has a giant head,
10:07only the blue whale's is bigger.
10:09This is it.
10:10What we've dreamed of seeing.
10:11What happens every day where people can't go.
10:13The creature battle no one has seen before!
10:16I'm on it!
10:18Keep with him, Chris!
10:19I'm on it!
10:22No!
10:23We're in it!
10:24Whoa!
10:26Chris!
10:27I just discovered something!
10:29Giant squid suction cups have serrated cutting teeth!
10:40That's enough squid slime for one day!
10:43Ugh!
10:44Battle between sperm whale and giant squid!
10:46We can't miss this!
10:50How deep can this sub go?
10:52Not any deeper!
10:53Sensors indicate you're nearing collapse depth!
10:56Collapse depth!
10:57If you go much deeper, the sub will be crushed like a tin can!
11:00Go!
11:01Uh-oh!
11:03Uh, Chris, we might have to head back!
11:05We can't miss this battle!
11:07Yeah!
11:07But we don't want to get crushed either!
11:09The sub controls are acting funny!
11:16I have no controls!
11:18Must have been lost in battle!
11:20We're sinking!
11:2850 feet until collapse depth!
11:3049!
11:3248!
11:33Why will the sub collapse if they go deeper?
11:35It's the pressure!
11:37What pressure?
11:38The water pressure!
11:40The deeper the sub goes, the more water is on top, the heavier that water gets, pushing
11:44in on the sub!
11:45That's pressure!
11:46If there's too much water weight pushing down on the sub, or pressure, the sub will
11:51be crushed!
11:52Gotta pull them out of there!
12:01Okay, I get it!
12:02I get it!
12:02I see why it's harder to explore the deep sea than outer space!
12:05I wish we'd gone to the moon!
12:07The worst part is, we saw the start of the battle between the sperm whale and the giant
12:12squid, and we'll never know how it ends!
12:15Almost there!
12:17Ten feet to collapse depth!
12:19Nine!
12:20Eight!
12:21Seven!
12:22Gotcha!
12:23And going up!
12:29Aviva, we've got to get back down there!
12:32What?
12:32I just pulled you up!
12:34But an ever-before-seen wildlife battle is going on down there!
12:37And if the mother whale loses, so does our buddy Bumper!
12:40But my sub couldn't handle the pressure!
12:42How are you going to get down there?
12:44Creature Power Suits!
12:48Oh yeah!
12:49Bring on the creature powers!
12:51Okay.
12:51I pre-programmed the disc for sperm whale and giant squid, but I haven't run any trials!
12:56It's too soon!
12:57And I obviously haven't figured out how to deal with the pressure!
13:00We'll have to rely on the code found in the whale and squid DNA!
13:04What do they always mean, DNA?
13:06DNA is the biological code that gives every animal their special features!
13:10Every type of animal has their own DNA code hidden in every cell of their body!
13:15But how are you going to access the DNA code when you can't even touch the animals?
13:20Uh, hello?
13:21I'm touching a giant squid right now!
13:23I was slimed by the giant squid, remember?
13:26I'm covered with squid slime!
13:30Ah!
13:30And I've got a whale tooth!
13:34Activate Creature Power Suits!
13:41Gotta get to the water!
13:43I'm just a blob of jelly with eight arms!
13:47Wait a second, did you say arms?
13:49Don't you mean tentacles?
13:51Hey, I've got those too!
13:54Squids have both arms and tentacles.
13:56The eight shorter ones are arms.
13:58You can tell because they have suckers all the way down.
14:01Oh!
14:02So the two longer ones are the tentacles!
14:05They only have suckers on the ends!
14:07Whoa!
14:07That's awesome!
14:09Uh, need water to move!
14:11Oops!
14:12Sorry guys!
14:15Oh yeah!
14:18These are the best Creature Power Suits ever!
14:22Let's dive!
14:23Giant squid!
14:25Ruler of the deep!
14:26Oh, I could eat you right now!
14:28I've got teeth!
14:29I'm a toothed whale!
14:30Heads up big head!
14:32Tentacle!
14:32Un...
14:33Oh!
14:34Woohoo!
14:35Ah!
14:36Martin, we gotta follow the real sperm whale and giant squid before it's too late!
14:40Let's go!
14:41How deep can they go in those suits?
14:43I admit it.
14:44I'm out of my depth when it comes to dealing with the pressure of the deep.
14:47Just hope the secrets of the whale and the squid are in the Creature Power Suits.
14:51I'll be keeping one giant squid eye on the pressure gauges.
14:57We're passing the depth where the sub crumpled.
15:00Feeling a little squeeze, but good.
15:02How about you, bro?
15:03Comfy.
15:04Like snoozing in a bed of jelly.
15:07How's that comfy?
15:08It's a squid thing.
15:09Hey!
15:10The squid!
15:12And the whale!
15:13They're still at it!
15:14If the whale gets enough of the squid in her mouth, holy calamari!
15:18Lunch over!
15:19Not so fast.
15:20This mollusk monster is getting a grip.
15:21Arms latched on!
15:23And remember, those suction cups have cutting edges.
15:27Ouch!
15:28That's where she got those sucker scars.
15:31But with every shake, the squid gets sucked deeper into the whale's mouth.
15:35The squid knows better.
15:36He's thinking, not gonna let that happen.
15:38Ink blast!
15:40Oh, whoa!
15:42Didn't see that coming!
15:43Yuck!
15:44Listen!
15:45That's Bumper!
15:46He sounds scared!
15:56Bumper's mom!
15:58The net's dragging her down!
16:00Even sperm whales can't go deeper than 4,000 feet!
16:03Okay, she can hold her breath for 100 minutes max.
16:06We have to save mom!
16:08To the creature!
16:09The creature rescue!
16:11I'm gonna monitor your depth and pressure.
16:13Right now, you're at 1,500 feet.
16:16The seawater above you is putting 682 pounds of pressure per square inch.
16:21That's as heavy as wearing a school bus has a hat!
16:25You're right!
16:26That is a lot of weight!
16:28And a lot of pressure!
16:30How are you feeling?
16:32Actually okay!
16:33So the creature power suits must be working their biological magic!
16:37There she is!
16:40Wait!
16:41But where's Bumper?
16:42He was just with us!
16:43I'll use my sonar to look for him!
16:55Must be that he can't dive any deeper than that!
16:58Yeah, he's just a kid!
16:59He can't dive as deep as the adults!
17:02So he's gotta hang out and wait when his mom dives super deep!
17:05I'll keep an eye on him with my sonar just like a whale would!
17:09And speaking of mother sperm whale, she's still sinking!
17:12Let's go!
17:22Alright, Bumper's safe!
17:24Woah!
17:24Woah!
17:25There she is!
17:263,000 feet and still hanging in!
17:29Oh, it's a good thing the sperm whale holds the record as the deepest diving, air-breathing animal!
17:33But you're entering the midnight zone!
17:35It looks like even a sperm whale can't go deeper than that!
17:38I'll grab her!
17:44Ah!
17:45Gotcha!
17:45With my tentacle club!
17:47Woohoo!
17:49A 90,000 pound sperm whale is really heavy!
17:52Even underwater!
17:55Yes!
17:56We're reversing her fall!
17:58Hey!
17:59And this is another never-before-seen creature moment!
18:02Huh?
18:04Squid and whale powers working together!
18:08Ha ha!
18:09Oh yeah!
18:10Oh!
18:11Oh!
18:12Better check on Bumper!
18:21A giant squid!
18:23Wait!
18:23It's a different body shape!
18:24Bigger!
18:25Ten feet longer!
18:26It's a colossal squid!
18:28A newly discovered species!
18:35It's after Bumper!
18:38I've gotta get there first!
18:40Go, Chris!
18:41Go!
18:42Go!
18:43Hurry back!
18:44I'm running out of squid strength!
18:48We're sinking!
18:55Who's gonna get there first?
18:57I can't tell!
18:58Too close to call!
18:59Hurry, Moby Chris!
19:11Bumper!
19:15Not gonna get there in time!
19:17But my sonic boom can!
19:21A powerful whale sound!
19:22That can stun the squid!
19:29Arms off!
19:31Uh-oh!
19:32Arms off Bumper!
19:33But now they're on me!
19:34The colossal squid has sharp suction cups too!
19:39Got an arm!
19:41Oh!
19:41But you got nine more!
19:43Whoa!
19:44And colossal squid tentacles have spinning hooks!
19:47And they've got me!
19:49But listen, colossal squid, and listen close!
19:52So what if you've got spinning hooks?
19:54So what if you've got the largest eye in the world?
19:57As large as a large pizza!
19:58You don't scare me!
20:00Can you take the shake?
20:06Okay then!
20:07Barton!
20:08No!
20:09But Chris, I was just gonna ask you the same thing!
20:12Why?
20:14Because we're sinking right towards underwater volcanoes!
20:18And they're active!
20:21But the squid just chewed off one of my fins!
20:24But I'm drifting straight into a pool of bubbling lava!
20:27Ah!
20:27His spinning hooks are shredding my back!
20:29A volcano's erupting!
20:31Chewing through the glass!
20:34Giant gas-filled rocks hurtling towards me!
20:40Giant gas-filled rocks hurtling towards me!
20:44Ah!
20:45Gotcha!
20:46Whoa!
20:48Going up!
20:49Hang on!
20:51Mama whale!
20:52Woo-hoo!
20:53Hurry!
20:54When he's done destroying my whale suit, he's gonna devour me!
20:59Uh...
21:00Excuse me, your colossalness!
21:02Uh, don't you know it's not nice to eat creature rescuers?
21:06Ah!
21:07Ugh!
21:08I got no strength to fight back!
21:11She's almost torn through my suit!
21:13The sperm whale has only five minutes of air!
21:15It's too deep for us to help you!
21:18Did anybody say, uh-oh?
21:20Oh, no!
21:22Stay away, Bumper!
21:23Save yourself!
21:26Oh, what a buddy!
21:28He's trying to save us with a little boom click!
21:34Whoa!
21:35Bumper!
21:36Was that you?
21:38I don't think so!
21:39Only one creature could do that!
21:42The loudest animal on Earth!
21:44A full-grown bull sperm whale!
21:47A direct hit from his boom click could knock down a small house!
21:51It totally stunned the colossal squid!
21:55Whoa!
21:57He's bigger than an 18-wheeler truck!
22:02The biggest tooth predator in the history of planet Earth!
22:07A battle between a colossal squid and a full sperm whale!
22:12A face-off between the largest eye and the biggest brain in the creature world!
22:25Whoa!
22:27The sperm whale wins!
22:29Come on!
22:30Let's go!
22:31Hang in there, Mom!
22:32We're heading to air!
22:38Are they?
22:40Whoa!
22:46Yes!
22:47She made it!
22:48Now that was a whale of a rescue!
22:53Deactivate!
22:54Let's get you out of this ghost net!
23:02Looks like Bumper's happy to have his mom back!
23:10Alright!
23:11Here they are!
23:12The sperm whales!
23:13The biggest-brained animals that ever lived!
23:17Who make the loudest sound of all animals!
23:20Are the deepest air-breathing divers!
23:23The eaters of giant and colossal squid!
23:25Swimming free and in the wild!
23:34There are two different groups of whales!
23:36The toothed whales!
23:37And the baleen whales!
23:38Toothed whales like sperm whales, beluga whales, killer whales, and dolphins have teeth!
23:44And they're predators!
23:45So they hunt their prey using echolocation!
23:49Baleen whales, they don't have teeth!
23:51Baleen whales are whales like fin whales, humpback whales, minky whales, and instead of teeth they have...
23:58Baleen in their mouths!
24:00And this is how they catch their food!
24:03The water comes in this side, goes through the baleen, and then when it comes out this side,
24:08these little hairs catch all the tiny plants and animals floating in the water, and that's what the baleen whales
24:14eat!
24:15The baleen whales are all around us!
24:17Using their baleen right now!
24:20Let's move out!
24:24Chris, you got that camera!
24:25We can stick this pole cam right in the water when we find them!
24:30Shh!
24:31What's that?
24:33A humpback!
24:35We heard a humpback!
24:36Where is she?
24:38There's a humpback whale swimming around.
24:42Humpback!
24:44Yeah!
24:47See why they call them humpback, they got that knobby hump and then the dorsal fin goes up and then
24:54down.
24:56Humpbacks are also baleen whales, and that's why the whale's here, to eat, to filter all those plants and animals,
25:03those tiny microscopic creatures, out of the water that is the whale's food.
25:08Oh, wow!
25:10That white!
25:11That's her fin!
25:11The white's her fin!
25:13And white on the edge of the tail!
25:15Here she comes!
25:21So close!
25:22We're just drifting, and she's drifting along.
25:25We're in perfect position!
25:30That was a good spout!
25:32Now that spout is a breath of air.
25:34It's kind of like when you breathe out in the winter.
25:37The hot air from inside the whale mixes with the cool air, and then you get that mist cloud.
25:43There he goes.
25:45The humpback whale!
25:54Whales are great!
25:55Oh, yeah!
