00:00You know what's coming, right?
00:01So, of course, Cole Palmer, you've got Trent Alexander-Arnold Foden, Harry Maguire,
00:06these types of players who have been pivotal over the years for England
00:11and have been exceptional players.
00:12Can you talk me through the decision-making behind leaving those players out?
00:16Oh, difficult. Difficult phone calls because I respect all of them
00:20and I respect them as players, as personalities.
00:23All of them have been in camp with us, all of them have been excellent,
00:27and a lot of them and all of them that you named deserved a call-up from this list of
00:3355.
00:34To reduce it was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult,
00:40and even in the phone calls I felt the emotion.
00:43So, I called all players that were with us in camp at least one time.
00:49I called them. I wanted to show at least the appreciation and the respect for what they have done.
00:56A lot of them, like I said, deserved to be with us.
01:00In the end, we went back to the evidence that we had,
01:03and the evidence we had was in September, October, and November,
01:08where the leadership group and the team in itself,
01:11where we made some bigger calls in September
01:15and repeated the camp with the same group and then had only very few changes in November,
01:21that felt that we have a bit of fresh air,
01:24we have a bit of younger players who play with hunger and excitement,
01:30and that it was a good mix between young and old usefulness and senior partnership,
01:37and it brought the best out of the players.
01:40We want to recreate that kind of spirit.
01:43That's why we rely heavily on that group,
01:45that was the majority of the group that was with us in these three camps.
01:50Does this mean that the other guys that you mentioned did anything wrong?
01:53No.
01:54For some of them, it's just a positional thing,
01:57that we also tried to have a balanced squad
02:00and not to bring five No. 10s and make them play out of position,
02:04because whom would we do a favour with that?
02:06The players ourselves?
02:08I don't think so.
02:09Like I said, these tough decisions had to be made before the tournament,
02:13I think, to not carry them throughout the tournament,
02:16and even if they are painful, especially for the players,
02:20and not easy to deliver,
02:21I think it was the right call to take them.
02:23I think it was the right call to take them to take them to take them to take them.
