00:00Iran rapidly rebuilds military capabilities as ceasefire holds, raising U.S. concerns.
00:06Washington, May 21st.
00:08Iran has resumed production of drones and is rebuilding its military capabilities
00:13faster than U.S. intelligence agencies anticipated, CNN reported Wednesday,
00:18citing American officials, even as Tehran considers a final U.S. proposal to end the war.
00:24Reconstruction outpaces estimates.
00:26A U.S. official told CNN that Iran could fully restore its drone attack capabilities within six
00:32months. The Iranians have exceeded all timelines the intelligence community had for reconstitution,
00:38the official said. The rapid recovery is attributed to several factors, including support from Russia
00:44and China, as well as the fact that U.S. and Israeli strikes caused less damage than expected.
00:50Intelligence assessments indicate that approximately two-thirds of Iran's missile launchers
00:54remain operational following the initial American air campaign.
00:58The rebuilding process includes replacing missile sites, launchers, and production capabilities for
01:04key weapon systems, meaning Iran would remain a significant threat to U.S. regional allies
01:09if President Donald Trump renews military operations.
01:13China denies allegations.
01:16Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CBS last week that China has been supplying Iran with
01:22components of missile manufacturing. However, China's foreign ministry has denied the allegations,
01:27calling the CNN report unfounded. The Pentagon confirmed it is aware of the intelligence assessments,
01:34but declined further comment. A spokesman stated the U.S. military has everything it needs to launch
01:39operations based on the time and place chosen by the president.
01:43Iran considering final U.S. proposal.
01:46Meanwhile, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ismail Bagai said Tehran is reviewing Washington's
01:52latest proposal to end the war. Iran has also renewed its demands for the release of frozen
01:58foreign assets and an end to the U.S. naval blockade imposed during the ceasefire, according
02:03to Iranian media. The most recent Iranian peace proposal reportedly includes an end to hostilities on all
02:11fronts, including Lebanon. The withdrawal of U.S. forces from areas near Iran. Reparations for war
02:17damage. The lifting of sanctions. And an end to the naval blockade.
02:22Trump talks on knife's edge. President Trump told reporters on Wednesday that negotiations remain on
02:29the borderline between agreement and renewed hostilities. If we don't get the right answers,
02:34it could happen very quickly. We're all ready, Trump said. He added that a deal could happen within a few
02:40days, but warned that Tehran must provide 100% of the right answers. The ceasefire,
02:47brokered by Pakistan, has been in place since April 8th, following 40 days of fighting that began when the
02:52U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 20th. Direct talks in Islamabad failed to
02:59secure a lasting agreement, with Iran accusing the United States of imposing excessive conditions.
03:05Since then, both sides have exchanged proposals, as the threat of resumed war persists.
03:12Iran establishes Strait of Hormuz control zone. Adding to regional tensions, Iran's newly
03:18established Persian Gulf Strait authority announced the creation of a controlled maritime zone in the
03:24Strait of Hormuz, requiring vessels to coordinate with and obtain authorization from the authority
03:29before transiting the strategic waterway. The authority defined the zone's boundaries as extending
03:35from Kuhe Mubarak in Iran to south of Fujairah in the UAE at the eastern entrance, and from Iran's
03:41Keshem Island to Um al-Kawain in the UAE at the western entrance. The UAE has criticized the move.
03:48Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, called it a violation of UAE sovereignty,
03:56stating that attempting to control the Strait of Hormuz or erase the UAE's maritime sovereignty
04:01is simply impossible. European Parliament Condemns Iran's Human Rights Record
04:09Separately, the European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution condemning what lawmakers described
04:14as the largest mass murder of protesters in the country's history and calling for expanded sanctions
04:20against Iranian officials. The resolution, passed by 516 votes to 14, strongly condemns Iran's use of
04:28the death penalty to deter political mobilization and calls for its abolition. MEPs deplored the secret
04:35execution of dissidents in March and April, including minors, and demanded the immediate release of all
04:41political prisoners. The parliament called on EU member states to expand sanctions on Iranian officials
04:47responsible for repression, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, and entities
04:53associated with the supreme leader. It also urged member states to close Iranian diplomatic missions
05:00accused of involvement in cross-border repression. Escalating Execution Numbers
05:06According to a New York-based Iranian human rights group, Iran executed at least 1,500 people last year,
05:13making it one of the world's leading users of the death penalty after China. Since the outbreak of war,
05:19the use of capital punishment has intensified, particularly in cases involving espionage and national security offenses.
