00:00Police have arrested four suspects, including two teens, following a home invasion in Wallafield yesterday.
00:06The victim, a 28-year-old Venezuelan woman from Demerara Road, reported that just after 11 a.m., she saw
00:15four masked men approaching her home.
00:18One was armed with a gun. The woman said she ran to secure her property, but the bandits broke down
00:24the front door and gained entry.
00:26The victim was held at gunpoint while the men stole a quantity of jewellery and $5,000 in cash before
00:33escaping through nearby bushes.
00:36During an intelligence-led operation subsequently launched within the Pinto district, the four suspects were arrested with a shotgun.
00:44According to police, operations are aimed at targeting violent offenders and ensuring the public safety continue to intensify.
00:54A quiet Wednesday afternoon in Bell Garden was shattered after three masked men, one reportedly armed with a firearm, carried
01:03out a daring home invasion and robbed a resident of valuables before escaping on foot.
01:09The victim, Lindley Barry, suffered injuries after being struck to the head with the butt of a gun during the
01:16terrifying ordeal.
01:17His wife was also at home at the time of the incident.
01:21It occurred sometime on Wednesday afternoon when the masked assailants forced their way into the home and confronted Barry.
01:28During the attack, the men reportedly demanded valuables and ransacked sections of the house while threatening the occupant.
01:37The man was allegedly assaulted during the confrontation and sustained injuries to his head.
01:42Despite the violent encounter, he managed to escape with his life.
01:46The suspects, meanwhile, made off with a quantity of valuables before fleeing the area on foot.
01:52Residents in the community were left shaken by the bold incident.
01:56Up to late Wednesday, no arrests have been made.
02:01The top cop has a warning for home invaders.
02:04Commissioner Alistair Guevaro tells them once they engage his men, they may not survive the encounter.
02:11Commissioner of police Alistair Guevaro defended the actions of police officers involved in two police-involved shootings linked to home
02:18invasions within a 24-hour period.
02:21Speaking during a media briefing at the police administration building in Port of Spain this morning,
02:26Guevaro warned criminals against carrying out robberies and home invasions during the ongoing state of emergency.
02:32We are in a state of emergency.
02:35The posture of the police in responding to the cries of the citizen is elevated.
02:44Please warn your brothers, your father, your uncle, whomsoever you know are involved in criminal activity,
02:53Don't harm yourself and go in people's house.
02:56Don't harm yourself and go in the bar and rob nobody.
03:00Because my officers, when responding, will defend themselves against you.
03:06And the outcome may not be one which your family would want to happen.
03:11He noted that over the last two days, two persons had been killed in confrontations with police officers
03:17who were responding to reports of home invasions and break-ins.
03:21As a result, he urged criminal elements to put down their guns and urged citizens to work with law enforcement.
03:28You know your family have a gun.
03:30Tell them, hey, go and put it in a spot and call the police and let them come and get
03:34it.
03:36You know your family committing robbery.
03:39It is best that you go and report them to the police and give us the evidence to put them
03:43away.
03:44Then you have to go and bury them.
03:45Because they, in going to put a robbery down, may end up in a situation which may not come out
03:52or resolve well for them in the end.
03:55So my plea is for the citizens to start taking some responsibility.
04:02He said the recent incidents highlighted the dangers faced by police officers responding to armed offenders.
04:08There have been two police-involved shootings linked to home invasions in a matter of hours, 24 hours.
04:17And this underscores for me the extreme danger posed by armed offenders who target people in their homes, whether occupied
04:28or unoccupied.
04:29The police commissioner also urged members of the public to report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
04:35Gevarro also responded to suggestions that officers should aim to wound suspects rather than use potentially fatal force.
04:43You as a police officer, in there in a house in the night and a man point a gun at
04:47you, are you going to aim for the man foot?
04:52No.
04:53The point is, there's a threat to the lives of police officers and the police officers by virtue of what
05:01is taught to them.
05:02And the use of force policy must act to preserve themselves and the lives of their fellow officers.
