00:03we can all struggle at times you're all right gorgeous girlie but with the right support
00:10let's check you over even the biggest challenges can be overcome
00:21this week I scrub up to help a collie cross work through past trauma
00:25good boy it's a bit strange isn't it I meet a bulldog who can barely breathe
00:35and I head out to East London to meet the vets
00:39hello treating dogs out on the street what does she mean to you she's my world
00:58it's not unusual to see a dog with medical issues at Battersea and fixing a dog's physical problems
01:05can be life-changing for them how are we doing but sometimes the treatment itself can have an
01:13emotional toll meet three-year-old collie shepherd cross Eddie oh this has to be Eddie
01:32hello tell me a little bit about Eddie he looks gorgeous yeah he's a great boy he was given in
01:37to us because he wasn't getting on with animals in his home I think it was the cats that was
01:41kind
01:41of winding him up a bit and how wise he looks really well he is well yeah the only thing
01:47that
01:47you will notice when he stands up he's got three legs oh my goodness should we have a look well
01:53I
01:53can see now yeah it's been about a year we think since it's been amputated Eddie had his leg amputated
02:00because of severe hip dysplasia and it seems the experience has had a lasting impact so something
02:07that we've noticed with Eddie on site is he's a little bit nervous with our clinic team at the
02:12vets in what way so does a couple of little grumbles we think it's because of his amputation it's just
02:18caused that bit of trauma in his life oh my darling it's really important Eddie overcomes his fear
02:25because even healthy dogs should visit the vet regularly for checkups so we're building up his
02:31confidence gradually so we'll just do some happy vet visits where we take him to the clinic keep it
02:37happy lots of positive association and we'll just work on that while he's with us because he needs to
02:42be able to go to the vet and we don't want it to be stressful for him it really breaks
02:49my heart that
02:50he's been through this horrendous trauma but he's still so gorgeous and so kind
03:03the team have a big job ahead of them to help Eddie get over this but at least he's received
03:09the
03:09medical treatment he needed for some dogs access to veterinary care isn't always guaranteed head
03:17behaviorist Ali is part of the team trying to change that Ali how you doing yeah good what's
03:24going on we are getting some goodie bags yeah ready because you will be going out later with Street
03:29but oh wow Street vet are a charity who provide free veterinary care to the pets of people experiencing
03:37homelessness it's estimated that around 300,000 people in the UK are homeless and up to 25% of those

04:00expand their pop-up clinics which are now in over 30 locations across the UK and with some help from
04:08our resident toy connoisseur olive what about that olive is that a good toy do you think a dog would
04:13like that I'm loaded up and heading out to one of their pop-up clinics in East London to meet
04:19vet and
04:20co-founder Jade hi how you doing you've come laden hey I'm not messing around excellent what we're doing
04:27today then we're here to meet a few of our clients and patients and can you treat anything out here
04:32we try
04:33and do as much as we physically can on the street we take bloods we test urine sample lumps and
04:38then
04:39if there are things that need further treatment then we refer them into a practice and Batsy
04:43obviously help us with something I have to pay for that nope no charge at all first up today is
04:50Matthew who has been bringing Bulldog Cross Roxy to see Vetville for the past few weeks to get help
04:57with a skin issue hello hi Roxy hello hi hi Matthew so how's Roxy doing she itchy still no no
05:05no no so we
05:06gave her some medications right I've got steroids and the antibodies and that's working she does look
05:10a lot more comfortable herself yeah definitely so what does Roxy mean to you Matthew literally
05:15everything you know I said she got me through hard times when I was homeless on the streets but now
05:22I'm
05:22lucky enough to have a hostel that's a pet friendly you get them times when you think is it worth
05:28living
05:29and she showed me unconditional love so now I have to embrace that and embody it because I never had
05:35it
05:36that's so lovely so we've got a bit of crusting here but that's just normal healing it looks like things
05:43are on the up for Roxy it's amazing I can't rate street that enough seriously what they're doing to help
05:50other people it's amazing absolutely amazing
05:56around the corner Lenny has brought along his five-year-old American Bulldog Sky to be checked
06:01over by Jade hello she said give me a hug oh now we've got a snog
06:08Lenny found street vet when Sky needed surgery on a hematoma in her ear and didn't know where else to
06:14turn look at that guard up but it's really nicely what a good girl and it should be no case
06:20and she's
06:21not been shaking her she's been great you guys have done an amazing job and you know the amount
06:25of children they've given her it's worth thousands of pounds and I could never afforded that what's
06:30your situation at the moment I'm a friend's house so my situation is actually quite stable at the
06:34moment so you your friends looking after you and doesn't mind sky one dog loves a dog I say to
06:39people all the time people let you down but she never lets me down ever so I trust her more
06:44than
06:44most people oh prison company not included across the road veteran RV is checking over 13 year old
06:55staffy candy who's been brought here by owner Maria for one of her regular checkups oh she's gorgeous
07:05hello candy can I give her some chicken yes you can she's a little bit of a piggy actually I
07:12wish
07:12she tell me a little bit about your story Maria I'm living in a high school at the moment I
07:16mean I
07:17was lucky that they took her in I wouldn't leave her ever she's so good how's she doing ladies she's
07:23had a few mobility issues oh the way she's standing with her feet kind of tucked underneath it might give
07:28us an indication that she's got a little bit of pain and in her hips and her legs or back
07:33her back
07:33leg buckle yeah I'm so we'll get help on that joint supplement okay I've got some toys here if
07:38you want Maria okay thank you and some leads and stuff and a little coat in there so that's for

08:39can tell from a dog what their owners like absolutely I can see you're just a lovely doggy daddy oh
08:45you're gonna
08:45make me cry oh don't cry you'll make me cry oh she's gorgeous look how good she is with Shan's

08:54looking good there's just one last thing she needs and this is a real first for me Shan just needs
09:00some
09:00vaccines as well okay so we'll do that now all right we're gonna do a vaccine on the street yeah
09:05absolutely she won't even notice yet all done yes you are bless you guys thank you so much so nice
09:13to
09:13meet you know you too nice to meet you bring it in bring it in babe I've never seen anything
09:20like that
09:21in my life what an eye-opening day that was it's so lovely to see these vets give up their
09:27own time to
09:28give back and then to see how life-changing it is for these people honestly it really touched my heart
09:33today with their regular checkups these street vet dogs are all doing well but for many dogs arriving at
09:45Battersea their medical journeys often just beginning at intake a three-year-old bulldog has just arrived
09:54hello mate he's been transferred from another rescue center as he needs specialist veterinary
10:00treatment meet Ronnie you're gonna love him he's so sweet I'm catching up with handler Beck to see
10:09how he's settling in hello hey Alison come in so this is Ronnie he's a lovely lovely boy you can
10:17see
10:17that yeah he's he's very sweet but almost immediately it's clear that Ronnie doesn't
10:23sound well at all if you're right I'm just taken back by the sound I'm so shocked at how loud
10:31it
10:31yeah with brachycephalic dogs it's really difficult we do see quite a lot of them struggling especially
10:36with being able to breathe dogs with short noses are known as brachycephalic breeds they often have
10:43serious health problems because of their extremely flat faces and sadly this year Battersea has seen a 35%
10:52increase in these breeds coming into their care I've seen quite a few brachy dogs yeah this is
10:58probably the worst one I've ever seen he's really quite stressed it's such a lovely dog he's just
11:04feels so sorry for them yeah the vet team need to assess Ronnie urgently so it's straight to see head
11:11vet Sean good boy here we go hi Sean what's going on Sean so some of these flat-faced dogs
11:21they have
11:21multiple levels of obstruction that contribute to sometimes difficult is breathing so it's very
11:26worrying it is a worry because I think inability to draw breath is sort of inspires feelings of
11:31dread and panic is there anything you can do you grade them from sort of naught where there's no noise
11:36at
11:36all to three quiet mark noise and sometimes actual breathing distress he's around a sort of a two it's
11:43a real problem so what are the next steps then we will need to examine him under anesthetic because
11:49you can't really tell until you knock them out actually what the cause of obstruction is it is
11:53sad to hearing breathing like that it makes me think about you know people who breathe these dogs
11:59because they're so cute there's actually quite a serious side to it isn't there that's absolutely
12:04right we have to really think about dogs in terms of health rather there's how they look the problem
12:08is maybe as a society we started to normalize it a bit yeah and people refer to it all the
12:13snoring or
12:13snuffling or it's quite cute but if you have a child that was making that noise when you're breathing
12:18you'd be down to any in a in a flash it's so true did out it's really it's a lot
12:23of airway
12:23obstruction there that we're hearing yeah and that sort of noise we're breathing this is not normal and it's
12:28something we need to address I just hope there's something that can be done to help Ronnie breathe
12:33a little easier things are always on the go here and in clinic the operating theatre is as busy as
12:46ever to the surgical team carry out around 75 operations every week today three-year-old bulldog
12:55Ronnie's being examined by vet Henry he was checking to see the soft palate in the roof of
13:05his mouth is the cause of his noisy breathing yeah that's a big one and it looks like surgery to
13:11open
13:12up his airways could definitely help hello Henry how's he doing he's doing well but we have quite
13:19a big up to do we're gonna address that really long soft palate at the back of the throat which
13:25is the
13:25major issue so all that tissue at the back of the throat we're going to cut out an appropriate amount
13:29so that he can breathe properly and the bigger the op you know the higher the risk as well so
13:34even this
13:35operation today is risky for Ronnie yeah the biggest risk to him really is after the operation there's a
13:43risk of swelling at the back of the throat and if that swelling is too severe then you know they
13:47can
13:47you know really be a risk of post-op complications and how do you do it we're using a piece
13:53of equipment
13:53called electrocortery right so essentially is both cutting and and stopping the bleeding at the same
14:00time using a little electricity and some wire feel like I want to become a vet yeah this is amazing
14:05well they say see one do one teach one yeah so you know next one's on you all right better
14:11watch
14:11closely as Henry begins to operate it becomes clear just how much excess tissue is blocking Ronnie's
14:20airways he's got a really long soft palate so it's going all the way back over his windpipe oh god
14:26gosh look how far that goes yeah it's literally blocking it could be struggle to get any breath out
14:32at all it must be like breathing through a straw poor little thing coping with that having to breathe
14:37through that you know it's literally blocking his airway this is quite possibly the longest soft
14:42palate I've ever seen if I'm honest so sort of just pulled it back and I'm just gonna clamp that
14:51it's so thick it's taking a little bit of time yeah there it is there we go that massive flap
14:58was
14:59blocking his airway look at that oh my gosh okay most attractive thing I feel no I feel good that
15:05you
15:05have done that bit I'm gonna leave you to it now good luck with the rest thank you very much
15:10amazing
15:11that was unbelievable I've never seen anything like it the flap was literally blocking Ronnie's
15:16airway when you see a vet who's had a really long career say that this is the biggest blockage he's
15:23ever
15:23seen on any dog you know that it's very serious I'm just hoping fingers crossed and praying that it's
15:30gonna be okay as Henry finishes up with Ronnie my three-legged boy Eddie who's terrified of vets
15:40but still not quite made it to clinic yet so the team have started working on desensitizing him to
15:52vet equipment in a chill out room where he's more comfortable it's okay ready just show you oh good
15:59boy see it's not so bad using his favorite treats to help you all feel a bit less scary you're
16:06being
16:06very brave so today I'm wearing some scrubs to see if I can help with building his confidence around
16:13vets but first we've got to get him into the building I don't even think he's gonna come in
16:22come on Eddie you can do this he's coming he's coming here he is alone that's amazing well done Eddie
16:34can you believe it how's he getting on so he's doing really well yeah we've been doing some
16:40positive association so obviously now the set was having somebody in scrubs that looks like a vet what
16:46do you think do I look good look great do you think he knows I'm not a vet he has
16:50met you so we start
16:51off using scrubs on somebody who is more well known for him and that just builds up that positive
16:56association whilst Eddie appears okay with the scrubs the equipment is a different story he wasn't too
17:04sure about the stethoscope on his initial health check so what we'd like to do is just to show him
17:09that stethoscope again let's just see what his reaction is to it so we just put some treats here
17:14near the stethoscope just to make that positive association and show it's not scary good boy he's
17:20having a good sniff Eddie's making good progress so Lucy thinks he's ready to move on to the next
17:27phase and actually go into a treatment room shall I go and get myself ready yeah it's time to meet
17:33vet Hammond hello guys I'm vet Hammond so as you can see I've got my stethoscope I've got my vet's
17:40room
17:41I've got my heart and I've got my bones oh god put that back okay next client please
17:54hmm maybe I need a bit more training come on then come on Eddie so you see he's straight away
18:02sniffing
18:02everything because it's a new room for him it just smells strange in here in a clinical setting it's
18:07just so different so we can give him some treats here just make it a positive experience yes I've
18:12got you a cushion once Eddie's settled and comfortable there you go there we go we can
18:18take the training up a gear so just very lightly to put the stethoscope on him there no pressure
18:24good boy so when the vet would do it for real they put a bit of pressure on it but
18:29we start off
18:29moving it gently and very light pressure good boy it's a bit strange but yeah it's a bit strange isn't
18:36it that's it by pulling his ears back and panting Eddie's showing us that he's a bit worried so
18:42it's time for some positive reinforcement there you go my darling so that was great and we would
18:48just probably keep it a short session like that just in and out I love you too I know if
18:54all the
18:54vets were like this it would be easy wouldn't it and I'm not gonna lie I actually loved being a
18:58vet
19:02I just hope Eddie's as calm as this when he gets in front of a real vet it's been a
19:10couple of days
19:11since Ronnie's airway surgery and the great news is he looks and sounds amazing yes it you good boy
19:23the swelling has gone down and he's been hand-fed soft food rolled into balls good boy which are
19:30easier to swallow to help him recover it's all gone you can lick the bowl if you want make a
19:36good one
19:36well done it's just Ronnie it's Ronnie oh my gosh Sophie this is like a different dog I know he
19:43sounds so
19:44much better so chilled out he's so much better how's the throat mate I saw that operation it didn't look
19:49great it was a massive chunk that was blocking his airway yeah it was so big how's he getting on
19:55he's getting on really well as you can see his breathing sounds so much better I can't even hear
20:00it I know I cannot believe what I'm seeing it's like two different dogs can we just take a moment
20:06for the breathing absolutely let's have a listen it's beautiful it's amazing how that physical
20:13operation yeah it's changed his temperament I know I feel like before because he couldn't breathe properly
20:20it was sheer panic yeah and that's why he was all over the place and now he's just like it's
20:26just
20:26chilled this is life-changing it really is do you think he can be rehomed soon oh absolutely really
20:32definitely he's a silly boy he's a lovely boy oh he's so gorgeous he's gonna make someone so happy
20:41aren't you but whilst he waits for that forever home Ronnie's chilling out on foster with Jonathan in
20:55South London Ronnie's definitely settled in very nicely ready he's an absolute character unique unique
21:03personality we're very happy to give Ronnie all the time that he needs until he finds that forever home
21:16back at Battersea Eddie's also making great progress with his fear of vets he's now confidently walking in
21:24oh good boy barely batting an eyelid at a stethoscope it's all done and even letting vets and nurses check
21:31his ears beautiful ears auntie and now he's happy all clear I'm delighted to say that he's found his
21:51forever home with Emily in Oxfordshire Eddie just loves a cuddle he is just the softest sweetest boy
22:00if he could sit here doing this all day he would just be in heaven and so would I to
22:05be honest
22:06I haven't taken Eddie to the vets yet we'll just be slow and steady and have lots and lots of
22:12treats
22:14he'll be staying with us forever absolutely I can't imagine life without him anymore you take it easy bud
22:39you
22:41you
22:41you
