00:23Peabody here with another serving of instant history.
00:26The Wayback Machine's all set to go, Mr. Peabody.
00:28So are we, Sherman. Our course for today is due north.
00:31You mean north.
00:32I mean north. We are going to Norway.
00:35The year is 995, and the unforgettable personality we shall palaver with
00:39will be none other than that renowned explorer, Leif Erikson.
00:43The transition through time was instantaneous.
00:45Good old reliable Wayback deposited us right on the Norwegian shores.
00:49However, we were anything but prepared for the site that greeted us.
00:51For there, staggering out of the sea, came Leif Erikson, followed by his crew.
00:56What happened, Mr. Erikson?
00:57I forgot to take the boat.
00:59Sure enough, in his haste to discover uncharted lands,
01:02the formidable globetrotter had neglected to sail off in his ship.
01:05I knew there was something missing, but I wasn't sure.
01:08All right, you men. Into the boat.
01:10We watched in silence as Leif put leave of the shore.
01:13The sturdy Viking craft pulled away, surged proudly forward,
01:16caught a favorable current, and sank.
01:18Don't burn Yemeni.
01:20Another boat was launched.
01:22Unfortunately, this one, too, made dubious progress.
01:24I don't understand it. Every time I climb aboard a boat, a dang busted thing sinks.
01:30Maybe you're too heavy, Mr. Erikson.
01:31Mr. Erikson wasn't, but his beard was.
01:34Wow! Two hundred pounds!
01:36When we grow a beard, we don't fool around.
01:40Leif, I'm afraid that beard has got to go.
01:42By ye, Hossafat, no.
01:44I had this beard ever since I was a little tinker, and where I go, it goes.
01:48Why not weigh everything on a boat, and whatever weighs two hundred pounds, leave behind?
01:54Then the beard can go.
01:55Sherman's idea was a sound one.
01:57Unreasonably sound, for after weighing the crew, the supplies, even the anchor,
02:01it was found the only thing that weighed exactly two hundred pounds was the boat itself.
02:06And we tried sailing without the boat before.
02:08It's not as comfortable.
02:10The beard, Leif, you have no alternative.
02:13A nearby barber went into action, and ten minutes later...
02:16All done. How does he look?
02:18Well-groomed, I'm sure.
02:19If it weren't for one slight oversight, you see, you cut off his coat collar, not his beard.
02:25Back to work went the disappointed barber, but at the end of an hour...
02:27It's no use. This beard been too tough for my clippers.
02:31A hammer and chisel were brought into play, all to no avail.
02:33In desperation, Leif even allowed himself to be tacked in blasting powder.
02:37But when the smoke cleared, the beard was still unsheared.
02:41That's weird.
02:42Say, I think I know how to do it.
02:44I'll be right back.
02:46We were so concerned that we decided to follow him.
02:48A mile or so inland, we caught up with him.
02:50What are you going to do with that torch, Mr. Erickson?
02:53Yes, and whose house is this?
02:55Well, you see, I figured this way.
02:56The one sure way to make air fall out is to worry.
02:59So saying, he applied the torch to the building.
03:04Jeepers, the place is a shambles.
03:06Your house, Leif?
03:07No, it belongs to the King of Norway.
03:10Wait till he finds out you burned it down.
03:12Are you worried?
03:13Not yet, but I got one more thing to do.
03:16Before we could stop him, he sped off down a road.
03:18And who should be coming along but the King himself?
03:21Leif Erickson, as I live and breathe.
03:24The King of Norway.
03:26Just who I'm looking for.
03:27Summoning all his strength, Leif picked up his highness and deposited him in a nearby mud hole.
03:32Arrest that man!
03:33Put him in the hooskow!
03:35Now you've done it, Mr. Erickson.
03:37Instead of sailing away, you'll be in jail.
03:39True, Sonny.
03:40But now I'm worried.
03:42Leif Erickson was carted away and for two hours, Sherman and I implored the King to have mercy.
03:46You see, Your Majesty, he was only trying to have something to worry about.
03:49So he'd lose his beard and be able to discover uncharted lands.
03:53Well, in that case, I forgive him.
03:56Leif was brought before us.
03:57Well, Mr. Erickson, did all the worrying cause you to lose your beard?
04:01No, but I did lose my hair.
04:03Leif was bald.
04:05His beard was as prominent as ever.
04:07It's hopeless, Mr. Peabody.
04:08Nothing is hopeless, Sherman.
04:09I gathered some grass roots and made a potion which I applied to the persistent beard.
04:13Will that make it fall off?
04:14On the contrary, it will make it grow.
04:16Inside of 20 seconds, the beard grew two feet.
04:19Now it weighs 300 pounds.
04:21Precisely.
04:21And if you recall, so did the anchor.
04:24Well, Leif Erickson finally sailed away and eventually discovered Greenland.
04:28Of course, when it came time to drop the anchor, Leif was a trifle put out.
04:33Golly, he sure had his troubles, didn't he, Mr. Peabody?
04:35Yes, but there was a brighter side.
04:37For instance, Sherman standing by the rail there is his son.
04:40Gee, Mr. Peabody, for a minute there, I was afraid you were going to make some awful pun about Leif
04:45Erick's son.
04:46Well, I was going to.
04:48Instead, I think we'll just say he turned over a new leaf.
