Motorway Patrol 2000 Season 23 Episode 9
Transcript
00:00Coming up on Motorway Patrol, crazy antics.
00:03Let the dogs out.
00:10And erratic behaviour.
00:12Are you on drugs?
00:16Has serious consequences.
00:18Hey, you're under arrest for failing to comply to my request.
00:22Come on, out of the car.
00:23Out of the car.
00:42On Auckland's myriad of motorways, Sergeant J.D. Koppel knows no two nights are the same.
00:48On an unusually quiet Friday night, he's issuing a ticket for speed well over the limit.
00:54Alright, so a few things tonight. The most concern is the speed, 1.32.
00:58It's just too quick, man.
00:59I know you're in a rush and you've got stuff going on at home, but if you crash at high
01:03speed you might not be getting home.
01:05Which isn't going to help the family, eh?
01:07The night is no longer quiet.
01:10Another patrol unit lasers an SUV at 146 kilometres per hour.
01:15J.D. responds to the call-out that the driver hasn't stopped.
01:18Driving dangerously, weaving in an arch.
01:22One of our units has lasered a vehicle in excess of 140 kilometres per hour.
01:26The signal of the vehicle to stop and it's fled at really dangerous speeds.
01:30J.D. is lights off, lights off.
01:33As the driver turns his lights off, his driving becomes even more dangerous.
01:37ATOC continued to track the SUV.
01:40J.D. follows at a safe distance.
01:42This driver needs to be intercepted.
01:45J.D. follows at the last location of the direction.
01:49J.D. off.
01:50J.D.
01:53It's been tracked by ATOC CCTV cameras exiting here.
01:58J.D.
02:29It's 4am Saturday morning on State Highway 1, near Ellerslie, Sergeant Jonathan Campbell
02:35and Senior Constable Simon Russell are just about to finish their shift, when they laser
02:43a vehicle at 121kmph.
03:07The driver is claiming he's recently arrived from Australia.
03:11How long have you been in New Zealand for?
03:12A month, have you ever been in New Zealand before?
03:19How old are you now?
03:2120.
03:22What's the name on your passport?
03:26There's nothing in the system, even with the immigration check, so you're either telling
03:33me lies about who you are, or something else is going on.
03:37You need to prove to me who you are.
03:39Have you got your passport or your Australian licence at home?
03:42Our passport's where we're staying in ****.
03:45So we need to go back to your house, ****, and we need to go in and see their passport.
03:53All right, so you can either do that voluntarily, or I place you under arrest for false details
03:57now, and we do it the harder way.
03:59So what would you want to do?
04:02Hold on, we can do that.
04:05The driver sticks to his story and opts to retrieve his passport.
04:11It's coming this way.
04:16Say again?
04:17Are you telling me Porky's?
04:19So what's your real name?
04:21****.
04:21****.
04:22Sergeant Campbell needs to find out why this driver's telling Porky's.
04:28**** pants.
04:30The thing is, when you speak to police, even if you've made mistakes or done something wrong,
04:34you need to tell the truth, because the truth is always going to come out.
04:38So why did you give me false details?
04:41So I just want to call, um, suspended for 10 months.
04:46Simon, stand by.
04:48I've got his real name now.
04:49He's suspended, apparently.
04:50Providing false details and driving while suspended is not the smartest game plan.
04:56Turns out the sober driver came to rescue his friends.
05:00Commendable, unless you're suspended.
05:02If you're stuffed up, just tell the truth, okay, because it's going to come back and bite you in the
05:06bum.
05:06This young driver's having a rough night, so Sergeant Campbell offers some seasoned advice.
05:11You've made a mistake tonight, and there is going to be financial pain,
05:15and, of course, the car getting impounded.
05:17But I can understand that you're trying to do them a favour and that kind of thing,
05:22but you need to think about yourself, though, eh?
05:26As the Toyota gets impounded, everyone needs to get home safely.
05:31It's our first night going out at the bars, so we thought we'd have a nice night.
05:37You've just got to make sure that whoever's driving your car has a licence.
05:40Honestly, next time I think we're just going to catch an Uber.
05:43Yeah, yeah, that's the safest way.
05:44Yeah, I think that's the safest way.
05:46The reason why he gave me a false name is because he's actually a disqualified driver.
05:49He was disqualified 12 days ago in court.
05:52He seemed pretty apologetic, really, when he realised he was in the wrong, he was going to get found out.
05:57He's been summoned to go to court now for driving whilst disqualified, third and subsequent.
06:02And he's going to be getting a fine for giving me the false details, which is quite hefty at $750.
06:07So that could have been avoided if he gave me his name straight up.
06:11There's just no point in lying to the police.
06:14Bye, David.
06:16Bye, car.
06:21In Auckland's North West, Sergeant JD Koppel is responding to a call-out for a fleeing vehicle.
06:27CCTV has captured it doing speeds in excess of 140 kilometres per hour and fleeing a police stop.
06:34JD and other officers attempt to stop the driver with a cordon on nearby roads.
06:40But with no sign of the SUV, JD abandons the road spikes and waits for further updates.
06:47The canine dog unit has managed to pick up a scent from the dumped vehicle
06:50and track through some pretty dense bush for about half an hour,
06:55resulting in him locating two of the other passengers from the vehicle.
07:01The canine team tracked two of the vehicle's occupants hiding in nearby bush.
07:07I'm with Delta in custody at the moment.
07:10We've got a unit that knows the idea of the sun.
07:12What's been happening tonight?
07:13I was at a party and then I asked my mate to come pick me up.
07:17Yep.
07:17And then he was doing some super stuff in the motorway.
07:20And then he came up here, dropped us off and ran off.
07:23I don't remember.
07:24Okay, who was driving?
07:27Him.
07:27Him? What's his name?
07:29Where's he?
07:30I don't remember.
07:31He dropped us off and he's left.
07:33That's my arm.
07:35With the driver still on the run, the canine unit continue the search.
07:39Can you open it up and give us his number, please?
07:43They've been very cooperative with us.
07:45We've utilised their phone to call the driver of the vehicle.
07:48Just down my guys.
07:49Delta's got another track.
07:50It's right here.
07:52Ready to deploy if we need to.
08:04After decades in the force, Sergeant Chris Mann knows to expect the unexpected.
08:09It's 10pm on the southwestern motorway and a seemingly routine stop is anything but.
08:15He's just clocked this Mazda doing 115 km per hour.
08:20The Mazda appears to be erratically changing lanes.
08:25Even flashing hazard lights.
08:32Finally, the vehicle pulls over to the shoulder.
08:44There.
08:44Put your window down.
08:48Other window.
08:48This one.
08:50Hello there.
08:52How's it going?
08:53Hey, the reason I stopped you is laser you coming towards me at 115.
09:08The driver is out of excuses, but not out of sass.
09:13What did you say?
09:14What did I say?
09:16Yeah.
09:17I lasered you coming towards me at 115.
09:21Yeah.
09:21So.
09:23Yeah.
09:23So I've got a speed detection device.
09:25I'm holding it in my hand and I've picked you up.
09:28Hey.
09:29Let's see it.
09:30Yeah.
09:30I can show it to you.
09:31Do you have your license on your first though?
09:33Thanks.
09:33Of course.
09:34Yeah.
09:34Cool.
09:34Thank you very much.
09:37Can you produce your license for me?
09:38Thanks.
09:40What?
09:41License?
09:42Yes.
09:43It is a requirement when you stop it to see your license.
09:45What's it for?
09:47Beg your pardon?
09:47What's the license for?
09:49What's your license?
09:50So I know who I'm talking to man.
09:51Oh yeah.
09:52Yeah.
09:53That's what I need your license for.
09:54To make sure A you've got a license and that it's current etc.
09:59And nothing to drink a day today for you?
10:03No drinking?
10:05No?
10:06You haven't been drinking at all?
10:08No.
10:09No?
10:09That's cool.
10:10Can you just count 1 to 5 for me?
10:12Thanks.
10:16Nothing to drink but more than a little excitable.
10:20What's that?
10:20There's my camera.
10:21Okay.
10:22Alright.
10:22So have you heard of a TV program called Motorway Patrol?
10:25A TV program?
10:26Holy ****.
10:27Hey, calm down.
10:28I'm trying to explain things to you.
10:29Yeah.
10:30Yeah.
10:30Okay?
10:59Yeah.
11:00He needs to turn himself in.
11:02How far away are the lights?
11:04Okay mate.
11:05Can you just get walking towards us?
11:07Are you on the road yet or still in the bush?
11:09Finally, the driver gives himself up.
11:11He's under arrest for dangerous driving.
11:13Maybe you've got a unit to come pick up this boy?
11:16Has he given himself up?
11:18Yeah mate, we've got him in custody.
11:20Once he heard, police had him surrounded and he had a dog on his trail.
11:23He very quickly decided to give up and presented himself here at one of our coordinates.
11:28In a case like this, if the driver had simply stopped for police, he would have been
11:31at home tonight with a ticket.
11:33Most of the time that's the case.
11:35When people don't stop for police, they only make things worse for themselves.
11:42Late Friday night on the south-western motorway and Sgt Chris Mann suspects a speeding driver
11:47may also be on drugs.
11:49Are you on drugs?
11:50Are you on drugs?
11:53No police officer.
11:55I am not on drugs.
11:56Okay.
11:56Could you just seem quite excitable?
11:58I just like to drive.
11:59I literally drove to my family's house.
12:01Okay.
12:02I've been trying to avoid her.
12:04So I'm just scrambling for clients.
12:07Okay.
12:08You're talking a heck of a lot.
12:10You're talking a heck of a lot.
12:12The driver is rambling, but he's failing to remember the basics.
12:17I don't know why you stopped me.
12:20You don't know why I've stopped you?
12:22I explained why I stopped you, eh?
12:25And there's more confusion.
12:28Do you recall last month having your licence suspended?
12:32Taken off you because of excess demerit points?
12:34Yes.
12:36But it's telling me that your licence was suspended in December, on the 17th of December,
12:41for per to three months.
12:47Are you okay?
12:48Yeah.
12:48Seriously?
12:49Are you okay?
12:50I'm seriously okay.
12:52The driver's behaviour is becoming more erratic.
12:56Okay.
12:57Yep.
13:00Listen to me.
13:01Can you pass me your car keys?
13:02Can you just pass me your car keys first, and then we can talk?
13:06Now he's ignoring a simple request.
13:09He's zoned out and doesn't wish to be disturbed.
13:13Hey.
13:19This roadside stop is getting more bizarre.
13:23Take the car keys if you need to.
13:25I feel safe here.
13:26Okay.
13:27Have you unlocked the door?
13:29Car keys are there.
13:30I don't want to take them out.
13:31Okay.
13:33All my information.
13:34Now you want my car keys.
13:38Okay.
13:40Actually, I can just...
13:41At the moment, you've been detained for driving while suspended.
13:45Okay?
13:46Alright, so that's what I want to talk to you about.
13:49I understand my rights.
13:52Cool.
13:53Okay.
13:54Well, that's a start.
13:56Yeah, can I just have another unit floating my way?
13:58Thanks.
13:58Just off of the suspended driver, but I'm not sure if he's hired or something or not.
14:01He doesn't seem to understand a lot of what I'm talking about.
14:04As Chris waits for backup, the driver pleads his case.
14:08The sensible thing is, like, just, like, let me just go.
14:11Okay.
14:12Well, I can't let you go because you're driving while suspended.
14:14You're not supposed to be driving.
14:16I understand my rights.
14:18You understand your rights.
14:19I understand that.
14:21Have you taken any recreational drugs today?
14:25What did you say?
14:27I said, have you taken any recreational drugs today?
14:31Have you taken any?
14:32No, I'm asking you.
14:34But Chris knows all the telltale signs.
14:38So why are your pupils so wide open?
14:42Why are you twitching and why are you constantly talking to yourself?
14:47I believe that you are high on drugs.
14:57Can I go home now?
14:58No, you can't.
15:00I've already advised you of that.
15:01Why?
15:02I've already advised you.
15:06Okay, because you've been detained for driving while suspended.
15:09Okay.
15:10And I suspect that you've possibly been taking drugs.
15:12All right.
15:12Because you're not very rational at the moment.
15:15You can't seem to answer simple questions.
15:18You're all over the place.
15:20Yeah.
15:21And you're repeating everything that I'm saying, which is not normal.
15:24Not normal.
15:26No, it's not normal.
15:27The man is becoming more paranoid, perching in the back seat.
15:32You're violating my rights.
15:34Am I?
15:35In what way?
15:37I understand my rights.
15:39Where is my lawyer?
15:45Am I making sense?
15:47Not really, no.
15:48No, you're not making sense.
15:51A second unit arrives to help transport him back to the station.
15:56Listen to me.
15:58So you've been detained for the purpose of a compulsive impairment test.
16:02Okay?
16:03Because I suspect that you've had some illicit substances today.
16:06Just jump out of the car, eh?
16:08You're going to come with me.
16:10Do I have to?
16:11Yes, you have to.
16:11I've already given you your rights and I've advised you why.
16:14Do I have to?
16:16Yes, you have to, man.
16:18Come on.
16:21What for?
16:22You'll be arrested if you don't.
16:24Yeah, come on now.
16:26Just make it easy, eh?
16:27Why?
16:29I don't know.
16:30He is entering my car.
16:32What for?
16:32What for?
16:33Why are you entering my car?
16:33Hey, hey, listen to me.
16:34You are under arrest.
16:40Listen to me.
16:41You are under arrest.
16:54You're under arrest.
17:01What for?
17:02What for?
17:02What for?
17:02What for?
17:07What for?
17:08the car. Put your hands behind your back. Hands behind your back. Hands behind your
17:17back. Hands behind your back. Stop resisting. Even in handcuffs, this offender is proving
17:24to be tricky. I can take a seat. Can I have a moment? Take a seat. Can I just have
17:32a moment
17:33before I take a seat? Take a seat now. Can I help at the front? He's desperate to ride shotgun
17:44and jumps over the front seat. Sit down here. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't grab me. Don't grab
17:54me. Please don't grab me. Get up. Get out. Get out. Get out. Get out. I'm already in the
18:01car. Get out. Get out. Get out. Get out. Hey, take a seat in the car and stay where
18:10you are. Stop it. You're misbehaving. Stop it. Hey. For everyone's safety, the driver needs
18:19to remain in the back. Stay still, all right? He's grabbing me. Just stay there. Thank
18:25you. Good to go. Victor 1, are you still at base? Yeah, I'm just going to stop it all
18:34with you. Yeah, copy. This guy's pretty erratic. Erratic. Pretty erratic. Police station arriving,
18:54now. Send. Send. Camera. Still rolling. Yeah, we thought it was like me. Send.
19:03Oh, the camera on the bike. Got it. Am I going to hold this later or do you want?
19:09Finally at the station, Chris's concerns are confirmed. Okay. Close your eyes. Close my
19:17eyes. Okay. And open your eyes. Open your eyes. No. Okay. That's a fail in that area.
19:24I failed. Can we start it again? No, no, no. We can't fail. Let's start it again. You go
19:29out like this. So you're standing on your foot. Okay. So that's a fail. You can heal the toe.
19:39Whoa. With the impairment test failed, there's now the option of a blood test. Do you consent
19:45to a medical practitioner to come and take a blood specimen? Do I consent to a medical practitioner
19:51you're like taking blood out of me? Are you freaking serious? I knew I should have noticed.
19:55Yes or no? Dang. I don't consent, dude. Okay. I'm a blood test. Are you serious?
20:07Okay. All right. Good evening. How are you? The gentleman's parents have just come and picked
20:13them up from the station. He's been summoned for two offences at the moment. It's refusing officer's
20:18request for blood after failing a CRT test. And also for driving while suspended. So he'll
20:26be appearing in court on those two charges.
20:35Sometimes even the simplest of instructions are lost on motorists. Constables Ran Lee and
20:42Sam Singh are trying to pull over a car with the universal sound of a siren.
20:46No. Come on. Move to the left. Lift. Left. Move left.
21:04Finally, the driver gets the message. I just recorded this car doing 122 rather quickly than
21:10one of the traffic. And for some people comments, it's not that common.
21:19Hey, guys. How's it going?
21:20It's good. Thank you.
21:21Hi. What made you think you could pull over to the right?
21:24Oh, no. Sorry. I was just stressing out until I wasn't sure if I was supposed to...
21:27Yeah, we were stressing out as well. It could have killed us all.
21:30Yeah, no. Sorry. I was just... I was like...
21:32It's very... Yeah. It's just very unsafe. Yeah, no. Sorry. That was mine.
21:35And the reason I can tell you is because that's called a fast lane. Yeah.
21:38People drive fast. Yeah.
21:40And if someone's not paying attention... Yeah.
21:43...they could rear-end our car, which then rear-ends your car. Yeah.
21:47That's not going to be pretty. Yeah, it's done.
21:49Have you got your license? Yeah.
21:51I've got your license. Thank you.
21:52We lasered you doing 122. Yeah.
21:55What's the reason?
21:56Honestly, I don't have an excuse for the reason. Sorry.
21:59I'm giving him the restricted, obviously not qualified, not compliance.
22:04As Ran runs the details, the duo are keen to chat.
22:08I'm an artist. What sort of artist?
22:10I paint Freddy Fazbear and Hatsune Miku.
22:13Oh.
22:13Yeah. Yeah, I love them. I love Five Nights at Freddy's.
22:16Very good.
22:18Here's your license bag. Yeah.
22:19So there will be a speed infringement for exceeding 22 of the speed limit.
22:23And there will also be a infringement for you're not qualified.
22:27You can't have anyone that's not qualified as a passenger.
22:31The driver's given firm instruction to exit at the next off-ramp
22:34and shout his mate an Uber.
22:38The young driver who fled on foot was referred to youth services.
22:42The driver who was telling porkies was convicted for driving while disqualified
22:46third and subsequent and sentenced to 150 hours community service.
22:51The erratic driver was fined $900 plus court costs
22:54for refusing a blood test after failing his impairment test
22:57and for driving while suspended.
22:58He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
23:01Demonstant to identify those who had been vaccinated for only for three months.
23:02The deal has been in the $100 more than $600 more than $300 more.
23:05The driver's ranking team is currently on the other.
23:05The driver's ranking team is a subset of the world.
