00:00Have you ever wondered why the World Cup is every four years?
00:03It's the biggest event and the biggest sport in the world,
00:06so why do fans have to wait so long between tournaments?
00:09Most major sporting events, the Super Bowl, Tour de France, the Masters,
00:14are held annually to see who the best is in any given year.
00:18One of few events with a similar four-year cycle is the Olympic Games,
00:22which was actually the inspiration for the very first World Cup.
00:25Long before soccer had its own global tournament,
00:27the sport was added to the Olympics in 1900 and grew in popularity during the 1920s.
00:33That success convinced FIFA officials to create their own event
00:36and they adopted the four-year cycle used by the Olympics.
00:40The first World Cup was played in 1930,
00:43filling the gap between the 1928 and the 1932 Olympic Games.
00:47That four-year cycle continued as the World Cup grew in scale
00:50until it basically became impossible to hold it any more frequently,
00:54given the huge amounts of organisation and the qualification time that each tournament requires.
00:59In recent years, there have been some calls to switch to a biannual World Cup,
01:03but for now, the four-year World Cup cycle is here to stay.
