00:00What do all these players have in common? All of them are missing this summer's World Cup due to
00:04injury, but it probably shouldn't be a surprise. Let me explain. Every year it seems like soccer's
00:09governing bodies adding new competitions and expanded formats, with more travel and less time
00:14for recovery between seasons. Last year the players union, FIFPro, described it as a perfect
00:19storm of how not to treat a human, with players like Luka Modric, Freddy Valverde and Fabian Ruiz
00:24playing more than 70 games in a single season. For context, FIFPro recommends a maximum of
00:2955 games per season. So what does this all mean? Well it means that big stars like Rodrigo,
00:35Eketike and Gnabry will be missing this summer's World Cup, and Lamine Jamal now faces a race
00:40against time to recover from a hamstring injury. So will anything be done to protect the players?
00:45For now it's difficult to imagine that governing bodies will willingly reduce the number of games,
00:49doing so would cut their revenue from broadcasters. But it might mean that these big name absences
00:54for major tournaments become increasingly common.
