An alarming slow-moving weather system is creating a severe flood risk across eight states in the Midwest this week. The levels of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are approaching or surpassing historical flood levels, as the already saturated soil is unable to absorb any additional rainfall. The National Weather Service has released flood warnings that cover Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

00:00A dangerous and slow-moving storm system is setting the stage for catastrophic flooding
00:04across eight Midwest states this week. Rivers are already running high after weeks of heavy
00:11spring rainfall. And now, another round of relentless storms is targeting the same saturated
00:16ground. The Missouri River, the Mississippi River, and dozens of smaller tributaries are
00:22approaching or exceeding flood stage across Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas,
00:27Nebraska, Arkansas, and Kentucky. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches and
00:34warnings stretching hundreds of miles. In some areas, water levels have already exceeded the
00:39record set during the catastrophic 2019 Midwest floods. Communities that have flooded before
00:45are flooding again. And this time, emergency managers warn they may not have enough time
00:50to respond. Roads are closing, bridges are submerged. And thousands of residents have been told to
00:56move to higher ground. This is not a routine spring flood. This is an event that could reshape
01:02entire river communities.
