00:00and right now let's turn our attention you just heard him to texas rangers broadcaster
00:04and knower of all things baseball it is jared sandler good morning sir good morning guys what's
00:11going on what kind of odds do you think i could have got yesterday on nimmo peterson and duran
00:18all having three plus hit games oh gosh uh well especially considering jock wasn't in the starting
00:26lineup you probably could have pretty pretty uh uh you know steep odds that would have had a nice
00:32payout with that i don't i don't bet on baseball and i don't condone betting on right it is wrong
00:37so i'll say this were you more surprised by that or jason kidd getting fired
00:44i i guess i the only reason i was surprised by jason kidd getting fired was just that he
00:48there were no like rumblings but it makes a ton of sense and i think it's the right move it's
00:53clear
00:53jason kidd at this point in his time with the mavericks was more interested in in being the
00:58gm or president of baseball operation basketball operations or whatever the you know the appropriate
01:03title would be than being the head coach and i think there were some reports earlier in the year
01:07that you know he maybe was tired of grinding the way that a head coach has to grind and instead
01:12wants
01:12to be uh you know in a less uh less strenuous role so i don't want that guy being my
01:19head coach i
01:19actually don't think jason kidd was a bad ex as a nose coach i think there are a lot of
01:23other
01:23things questionable but it also makes sense that anyone who's got blood on their hands with a luca
01:27deal uh is no longer a part of this and that richardi uh you know i saw that he's not
01:33coming back
01:33either and i don't know what his role or whatnot was but uh it seems like messiah jerry wants to
01:38clean house and i don't blame him for wanting to do that so you think uh bill self would be
01:42a good
01:42hire no i don't i don't i don't think bill self would be a good hire i think with his
01:49help uh you
01:50know he's probably got a couple more years at kansas and that's probably about it but uh you know he
01:54would not be a good iris coach k that would be an offlier that is not all right you know
01:58what jared
01:59i keep telling gbag to ask this did you think that the 2023 rangers world series was not really
02:06that impressive because they didn't win their division okay hold on we got to explain to everybody
02:10what's going on here all right all right there was a discussion between you and jared
02:14we've had to open this door here we've had this argument about national titles versus outright
02:19conference titles and your love of bill self or just hatred of all things duke so did you think
02:25that that kind of discounted the world series is because they didn't win their division that year
02:29it didn't discount the world series just got just that you know duke's national championships
02:34aren't discounted but i've always said you know march madness uh because it's a one-and-done
02:39format it it doesn't like like i don't think i give you a hard time about coach k's flops and
02:46having three lottery picks and not even making the final four at the end of the day you're dealing
02:51with 18 19 year old kids because you don't i mean even even if they're 20 21 or now like
02:57in college
02:58you can have 28 year olds with nba experience but uh you know like you're dealing with 19 year old
03:03kids they might have a bad day uh and so yeah sometimes the best team wins you know the the
03:09national championship in basketball but i'd say in any one-and-done format the best team doesn't
03:15you know win at the same level that they do in a series and so uh you know major league
03:20baseball's
03:20got a series format uh but no i mean like i do think that winning i mean it's why in
03:27you know in uh
03:29in england for instance or overseas they don't have like soccer the premier league doesn't have
03:34playoffs they're like the winner is the best team at the end of their season because it you know they
03:39believe 38 matches is enough to determine that uh but that's just not the way it's set up here in
03:45america and so no it's not any less impressive but i i do think that or it shouldn't be discounted
03:52but
03:52i do think that over a larger sample size of several years in college basketball winning your conference
03:57over and over and over and over and over when teams are scouting the crap out of you
04:02is a very very strong testament to coaching ability do you think the super bowl is kind of stupid oh
04:08okay all right that's it jared i'm just kidding jared i'm kidding i'm kidding i don't think it's
04:12stupid but i wish there was a way in which you could play like a best of three but like
04:16that's
04:16obviously not the way it works i would i actually i would be pretty stoked about that all right how
04:21are
04:21we feeling about the progression of wyatt langford i know they said if all goes well he can
04:27start swinging a bat again on friday but doesn't that probably still mean like you're not seeing
04:33him until the start of june yeah i think so and and i think given that there was kind of
04:39a false
04:39start in his initial rehab you know they're not gonna uh aggressively rush him back you know i think
04:44they want to make sure that when he comes back he's back for the rest of the season as best
04:48as they
04:49can not not that not that that's ever not the intention but i do think there are times when maybe
04:53you're a little more aggressive because you think that hey you know it can you can power through
04:57this whatever the case might be uh yeah i think beginning of june is probably uh it seems like
05:02right now probably what makes the most sense but um you know thankfully it's progressing and then
05:07hopefully get him back you know get cory back hopefully on monday get those two guys in the lineup
05:12together and producing together and then you know maybe it gives you know gives this thing a totally
05:17different complexion i promise i am not trolling with this question obviously the rangers are
05:24better with cory seager and cory seager when he's on it has been one of the best hitters in major
05:31league
05:32baseball is there any do you have any concern because i'm sure you've heard it for the rangers fans
05:36but do you have any concern that it's just age that is catching up with him to a certain extent
05:43for
05:43some of the struggles early this year so i i think that's a fair question i know you're not trolling
05:49i
05:50i think that with anyone uh you know when you get north of 30 that it's and heck if you've
05:58had a lot
05:58of injuries even before you turn 30 it's fair to assess it uh here's the thing i would say i
06:05is cory
06:06seager in a position physically to be the best he has ever been in his career i'm probably i mean
06:12i i you
06:13know i can't speak with expertise but like it would stand to reason maybe not but i don't think that
06:17he's in a position physically where the drop-off should be so extreme where it's like oh gosh he's
06:21he's no longer a part of the order hitter right like i i think that you get him healthy get
06:27this
06:27back right uh and i think you'll still see cory seager perform at a super high level i mean since
06:32since 2023 uh you know the last uh or sorry since 2022 when he came here you know he's been
06:40one of the
06:4010 best hitters in major league baseball when you look at a lot of the rate stats uh you know
06:45like and people are gonna hate me saying this but like x woba and wrc plus and these are metrics
06:50that
06:50front offices not just the rangers front office but 30 front offices around major league baseball
06:54utilize to assess this sort of thing so uh you know he's obviously the counting stats aren't there
07:01because of time this but so you know like yeah maybe there's a little bit of a drop-off but
07:05i still
07:06think a little bit of a drop-off is still one of the best hitters in major league baseball uh
07:10he's
07:10on the mound today so i'm just kind of curious uh the overall assessment so far for what jack
07:15lighter has done this season at expectation uh where where are you with with how you would assess
07:22his season so far yeah i think that i think it'd be fair to say that jack has not maybe
07:28met some of
07:29the excitement that a lot of folks had for him going into the season but it's also a long season
07:36and i don't have any reason to believe that when all is said and done we don't feel that way
07:40about
07:40jack you know some people thought hey maybe an all-star and it's really tough to like major league
07:44baseball's all-star game while they're guys who drop out and whatnot because every team's got to
07:49have a representative it's not easy uh to be an all-star not like it is to be a pro
07:53bowler where like
07:54alec could be a pro bowler if he plays five snaps true right it's true uh you know the fact
07:59shador sanders was a pro bowler is like the biggest joke in the world he was surprised too
08:03okay i'll just let you know he was definitely surprised yeah i would be surprised if i was
08:08one of the worst quarterbacks in the nfl uh so he hasn't jack hasn't been that guy he has i
08:16mean the
08:16last two starts have been super impressive uh but i just think it's because there's high expectations
08:21for jack right you know and i think some of the things that you know maybe jack would even say
08:26hey like i got to be better are things you know from like a strategic standpoint attacking hitters
08:31maybe not going away from something just for the sake of mixing it up if the guy hasn't shown that
08:35he can touch it right there's a uh the pittsburgh start where he went away he got cute with henry
08:40davis walked henry davis that set up the beginning for the pirates that changed the course of that game
08:44uh in detroit the the second beginning was because the rangers just really struggled defensively
08:51but the first one where he gave up the two-run homer to spencer torkelson uh you know torkelson
08:55hadn't shown any ability to catch up to his fastball he went for the breaking ball he wasn't trying to
09:00hang it he hung it you know that wasn't the intention but you know if he throws a fastball it's
09:04probably a
09:04strikeout and you know inning over so uh you know and you would get through the inning with no runs
09:09i
09:10should say uh so but like yeah i think again the standard in the bar for jack is set so
09:16high because of
09:17a great step he took last year i think that you know with the last two starts he's heading in
09:21the
09:21right direction i'm curious how he handles the altitude because uh you know high ride fastballs
09:26uh don't always play as well here uh and spin doesn't always play as well here but the bullet
09:33slider and the you know the the the uh kick change that he throws those are pitches that
09:37you know could have an interesting impact and i'm curious to see how he attacks the rockies
09:41i know last thing i know the arizona quick i'll be quick i know the arizona appearance was a
09:47disaster but otherwise it feels like davin collier has been good outside of maybe some walk issues
09:53what do you think about his run and are you surprised at all to pull up a chris martin who's
09:58been struggling a lot this season and optioning out collier yeah i think that with with martin you got
10:04it i think you owe it to yourself to just see you know now coming back from injury if he
10:10if he can be
10:10a contributor to this bullpen i don't think he's got a runway that extends through the end of the
10:14season if the production doesn't get better right but i think that all right he was hurt now he feels
10:19better let's see what it looks like and if it doesn't look good then you know then maybe the
10:24rangers would go in a different direction with collier i think ultimately just philosophically
10:28they're trying to limit the walks uh and so i think that's maybe why they made the decision to send
10:33him down and not uh someone else he also had pitched a couple innings not that peyton gray
10:38hadn't because i think it was between those two guys uh peyton gray you know i pitched as well but
10:43i i think that they feel like collier can go down get some more leverage innings
10:48in triple a but i expect to see gavin collier up so long as he stays healthy at some point
10:52here in the near future uh and again with chris martin see how he looks and if it doesn't look
10:57good
10:57then you know i think the rangers would uh you know wouldn't be wouldn't be uh hesitant to to move
11:02on
11:02and move into you know a better direction if they don't uh believe martin's the guy who can help
11:07answer some of those questions thank you very much for the info i hope shiloh doesn't tell you to go
11:12make a sandwich we appreciate you as always that's good fellas yeah shiloh can come and find me i'll be
11:19in anaheim after at today's game there you go jared sand
