00:00Fresh political tensions are unfolding in the DRC.
00:04Major opposition parties have unveiled a new coalition in Kinshasa,
00:07accusing the government of seeking a constitutional revision to stay in power.
00:12During a charged press conference, opposition leaders pledged to fight
00:16what they describe as a serious threat to democracy ahead of upcoming elections.
00:25The authoritarian drift undertaken by Mr. Trilip Shisekedi's regime
00:30through his initiative to change the constitution
00:33constitutes an act of rebellion against the republic
00:36and a declaration of war on the Congolese people.
00:42The move comes after Shisekedi hinted he could seek a third term
00:46after the end of his term in 2028 through a national referendum,
00:51despite the constitution limiting presidents to two terms in office.
00:56Let us make a solemn appeal to the sense of duty of all Congolese
01:05in accordance with Article 64 of our constitution,
01:10which states every Congolese has the duty
01:15to thwart any individual or group of individuals
01:20who seizes power by force or exercises it
01:23in violation of the provisions of this constitution.
01:26Shisekedi has also warned elections could be delayed
01:30as conflict intensifies in eastern DRC,
01:33where M23 rebels control key areas including Goma and Bukavu
01:37in North and South Kivu.
