00:00I just think this is heaven.
00:02I just don't want my mom to be nervous.
00:04Have you ever been outside the United States before?
00:05Nope.
00:06Whatever it takes, we're doing the Lord's work here.
00:08I'm Daner Gerald, and I'm here at the Missionary Training Center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
00:13Saints.
00:14And this is one of 11 all around the world.
00:17Every year I hear over 40,000 young men and young women come here to learn, to grow spiritually,
00:23to teach the gospel, and prepare themselves for what will be a life-changing experience.
00:30I'm very excited to see what's going on inside, so let's go find some new missionaries and see what it's
00:34all about.
00:38Here's the plan.
00:39We'll begin with brand new missionaries arriving on their very first day.
00:43Then, we'll see what it's actually like to be a missionary here.
00:47And finally, we'll follow missionaries as they leave the MTC and head into the mission field.
00:52The question is, will they really be ready?
00:55Let's find out.
00:58Yes, let's go back.
01:00You are hereby called to serve as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
01:04You are assigned to labor in the Australia-Sydney Missionary.
01:10This is an interesting process.
01:12Every week, hundreds of missionaries are being dropped off, saying their goodbyes for 18 to 24 months.
01:17And they pull up, the missionary gets out, grabs their luggage.
01:21A host missionary comes, who's been here for three weeks.
01:24And these are host missionaries.
01:27Say hello, everybody.
01:27Bye.
01:29And they will help the family, help them know where to go.
01:32They're going to say their goodbyes.
01:33It gets pretty emotional.
01:34So you have about five minutes to say goodbye, Mom.
01:37What's that like?
01:37I mean, a mix of emotions, right?
01:40It's a lot.
01:40The scariest thing, sending out my only girl.
01:43It's beautiful and it's terrifying all at the same time.
01:46Tell me, what is it like to have so much family support as you go on this mission?
01:51It makes it hard to leave, but it also makes it easier.
01:54And they'll all still hear from her.
01:56I'm a member of the church, but I'm a convert.
01:57Only one in my family.
01:58So I'm sitting here looking at this and thinking, wow, you guys are so blessed.
02:02Where are you heading?
02:03I'm headed to Armenia and Georgia.
02:05Georgian?
02:06Do you know any of it already?
02:11Wow, that was pretty good.
02:12Everybody say aloha.
02:14What are you most excited about to go out on a mission?
02:18Connect with the people, try to teach them through the spirit.
02:20I know that the people are waiting for him and he will be such a good missionary.
02:26Who's going to get his room now that he's gone?
02:30Can I help you with your luggage?
02:32All right.
02:33Only the strong missionaries.
02:34He's got it on his shoulder.
02:35Oh my goodness.
02:36Well, one of the things that I'm learning is people from all over the world are coming
02:40to this place to learn about Jesus Christ and what it means to teach people about Jesus
02:44Christ.
02:45It's pretty cool.
02:46Where are you from?
02:46I'm from England.
02:47Elder Ozawa from Japan.
02:49What city in Japan?
02:51What is it that motivated you to go out and preach the gospel?
02:56I feel so saved because of Jesus Christ's atonement.
02:59It motivates me so much.
03:00I'm hoping to experience just a closer relationship with my Savior, a closer relationship with
03:04the scriptures.
03:05I committed to Snow College.
03:07So right after my mission, I'm going to go to Snow.
03:09Oh, so you had to sacrifice the football game to go out here.
03:14I've had so many experiences with Christ and with God, and I just want to let people know
03:19how much God loves them and how they always have someone looking out for them.
03:22These young men and women are sacrificing to come here, and I'm so impressed with how prepared
03:27they are, even from day one.
03:29As soon as they arrive, they are teamed up with a host missionary who will guide them to their
03:33residence rooms and introduce them to their companion.
03:37Now, you're the host missionary here, right, Elder DeFreeze?
03:39Yep.
03:39We're going to grab his luggage, and I'm going to take you to your building and show you
03:42where your room is.
03:43Okay, and so is that where you have your companion while you're in the MTCs?
03:47I just got here, I think.
03:49I think.
03:49See if the key works.
03:54It was fun to see these missionaries settle into their room and meet the district they'll
03:59share this experience with.
04:00Once they take a moment to unpack and get settled, it's time to head right to their first class.
04:05So let's go see what this first class is like.
04:08So, so happy you and me today.
04:09I've been looking forward to this all week.
04:11We're just going to get sent into it with a hand and a prayer.
04:25Can you tell me what is the thing that will help them the most while they're here in class
04:30and going through this experience?
04:32I think the best advice I could give you is lean on your Savior, Jesus Christ.
04:36He is the person working with you in this gathering of Israel, and it's a joy to work with Jesus
04:41Christ.
04:42What was the decision to go on a mission like?
04:45I just was back and forth about it for a couple months, and then eventually I just realized
04:49that, you know, my Heavenly Father wanted me to make this decision myself.
04:52Throughout high school, I wasn't really planning on it, and I had an experience where I was
04:55talking to my father, and he was just telling me all about a mission and how God has helped
04:59him in so many ways.
05:00And I remember just praying and saying, like, God, how can I be closer to you?
05:04How can I feel your love?
05:06I had a distinct thought in my head, go on a mission.
05:09I just felt that he loved me so much.
05:11I could just feel that he knew me, and he knew that that's where I needed to go.
05:13I felt just joy, and I felt just that calming sensation where I knew that he loved me,
05:18and he wants the best for his children.
05:19I get the feeling it's not easy for every missionary to serve a mission.
05:23Many of these young people face real challenges and sacrifices to get here and to serve.
05:29So I've only been a member for a year and three months.
05:31I was baptized.
05:32Last year of August 10th, I already had my plan set out for community college, and I was doing
05:36photography.
05:36I prayed for if I wanted to serve a mission, if that was the right thing to do.
05:40I got a prompting and formed a dream where there was a missionary knocking on some door,
05:44and I thought that maybe that was me.
05:45I've only been a member for a year, but I know that my testimony can go out and help those
05:51people in need, and I can relate to them how they feel and know that they can make a change
05:55as well.
05:55How old were you when you got baptized?
05:57It was about a year and a couple months ago, so I was 18.
06:00That's awesome.
06:01So now you're 19.
06:01You just got baptized.
06:02You're going out on a mission.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Wow.
06:05I was familiar with the Book of Mormon.
06:07I didn't think it was true, but then I saw myself with the Book of Mormon.
06:12I just saw kind of this...
06:13You had a vision.
06:14Kind of, yeah.
06:15And I felt the spirit super strong.
06:16I understand you're 26 years old?
06:19I am 26 years old.
06:20And what's the average age of missionaries here at the MTC?
06:2218 and 19.
06:23For a long time, I didn't want to serve a mission.
06:27It seemed as if the Lord had just told me, if at any point you have ever wanted to serve,
06:32now is the time.
06:34You know, I have a feeling that because you did it when you did, there are specific people
06:38that are ready at this time for you to teach them.
06:41What did Jesus Christ do in your life?
06:44He made me feel loved.
06:46And if he loves me that much, then there are people out there that he loves that they need
06:49to know that too.
06:50There are so many people coming from so many places, and from what I can tell, they're
06:55all committed to their calling, and they take it very seriously from the heart.
07:02So I've heard a lot of crazy rumors about the cafeteria and the food here.
07:06Let's find out which ones are true.
07:10So, Elder, be honest.
07:12How many bowls of cereal do you guys eat in a day here?
07:15Way too many.
07:16So I've heard missionaries consume way too much chocolate milk here.
07:19What is that about?
07:20That's totally true.
07:21I've heard stories.
07:22Barely it's that good.
07:23Yeah.
07:23Wow.
07:24I don't see a lot of vegetables on your plates.
07:27This is your first plate.
07:28It's my first plate.
07:29Yeah.
07:30Where are you going to serve?
07:31Papi and Tantajiti.
07:32Oh, you'll get plenty of fruits and vegetables in Tantajiti.
07:34Oh, yes, we will.
07:35What do you want to tell your mom?
07:35Hi, mom.
07:36I love you.
07:37I'm having fun at the MTC.
07:38Mom, I miss you.
07:39The food is not as good as yours, but I'm still having a blast.
07:42Pretty soon, you're going to be having to cook your own meals.
07:44Can you give me three meals that you can cook for yourself?
07:47I can make rice.
07:48That's pretty easy to make.
07:50Good chicken.
07:50How do you cook your chicken?
07:51Here's an air fryer at home.
07:52Here's an air fryer.
07:53Okay.
07:53Where are you going to serve your mission?
07:54I'm going to Orlando, Florida.
07:55Speaking Haitian Creole.
07:56Haitian Creole.
07:57Yeah.
07:57You better hope they feed you down there.
07:59I'm really hoping so.
08:00Like, I'm still waiting on that third meal.
08:05Well, now that we're fueled up, it's time to head back to class for some more lessons.
08:10There they go.
08:12The speed at which missionaries learn a new language is incredible.
08:15And here at the MTC, they teach over 50 different languages, including Portuguese.
08:22Tagalog, Mandarin.
08:23I think this might be where those little oranges are from.
08:25Japanese.
08:26Can you say hello in Japanese?
08:28Konnichiwa.
08:29Konnichiwa.
08:29ESL.
08:30That stands for English as a second language.
08:32And Spanish.
08:34Orang.
08:35Okay, technically it's Espanol, but close enough.
08:38I'm going in with Brother Alan, right?
08:40Yes.
08:40He's teaching this class Albanian, so I get to go in there with him and check it all out.
08:44Thank you for letting me join you.
08:45Of course.
09:03So, I'm here with Sister Van de Grock.
09:08Yes.
09:09Yes.
09:09How long have they been learning Tagalog?
09:12This is their seventh week now.
09:13So they've been here a while and they're doing really well.
09:16What's it like to learn Tagalog?
09:17It's really hard, you know, like every day we're kind of getting a whole bunch of stuff, but it's really
09:22rewarding.
09:22How long did it take you to understand what it took to yourself?
09:25We've been here for six weeks now, so probably last week.
09:28I've definitely seen the gift of tongues in real time.
09:31Both of my parents, they're both really fluent in Tagalog.
09:34It's always been a dream to serve in the Philippines.
09:36And so when I got my call, like my whole family was just ecstatic and I've actually got family like
09:41right next to my area that aren't members.
09:43No way.
09:43So it's going to be a good opportunity.
09:45What language are you learning?
09:46I'm learning Albanian.
09:47Have you ever been outside the United States before?
09:48Nope.
09:50This is going to be fun.
09:51It's going to be an adventure.
09:53How is it possible to learn a whole new language like Albanian in eight weeks?
09:57It's pretty crazy.
09:58I took Spanish in high school, like four years, and I think I'm probably further in Albanian than I was
10:03in Spanish.
10:03It's pretty hard because Albanian has like these weird declensions with nouns and stuff, but it's also really cool.
10:09I think when we give our testimonies in Albanian, it's just so simple because we don't know the words and
10:14it just like testified to me how the gospel is simple.
10:16Yeah, there's beauty in simplicity, right?
10:18Yeah.
10:18Two more weeks here and then you go to Albania.
10:20How do you feel about it?
10:22I'm really nervous.
10:24I'm super excited to get out to Albania.
10:25The Lord's got me, so it'll be okay.
10:26I think just meet the people and like to give them this message of joy, like to give them hope.
10:31My parents met on their mission, so that was like the first of this butterfly effect.
10:36I always think of butterflies, like each little thing that happens leads to something else.
10:40I just continue to see that.
10:42Like I teach a sister and she's scared to go on a mission, but she does it.
10:46And now she's sending me pictures of these three people she taught this week.
10:50And it's like she's a year and a half of that.
10:52And she'll come home and she'll make an impact on so many more people.
10:55So how many people do you think your little light that's shining has impacted?
11:00Just take a wild guess.
11:01Not even a small percent of the world who needs Jesus Christ, but I'd hope to think hundreds to maybe
11:07a couple thousand.
11:09No doubt.
11:10Dude, I'm so stoked for you.
11:12You are going to be an amazing missionary.
11:14She is going to do awesome.
11:15I cannot wait.
11:17So what else do missionaries do here besides attending class?
11:21As I soon discovered, there are a number of other activities that help them prepare to enter the mission field.
11:26So I found out about these cool rooms.
11:29It's kind of like a living room.
11:30And this is a place where missionaries can learn and practice teaching somebody.
11:35So Heavenly Father made this plan, and it was for all of us to come down to earth and to
11:40gain a body, to also experience life and go through hardships, but also to experience true joy.
11:47I know that as we read this book, the Book of Mormon, we can feel the true love of Christ.
11:53I feel so much joy when I read the book, when I attend church, when I do the things that
11:57God has asked of us, and I know it to be true.
11:59I can tell you this, I had a couple of missionaries about the same age as you tell me the
12:04same thing, and that's why I'm here today.
12:07So I think you guys are going to be great missionaries.
12:10I've been so impressed with each missionary and the spirit they carry with them.
12:14I also learned that practice rooms are not the only place for them to kindle that spiritual fire.
12:20I've heard that one of the best ways to prepare for a mission is to go to the temple.
12:24It's just this feeling of peace and the love of my Savior and the love of my Heavenly Father.
12:29There for me.
12:30Wow, that's hard to find sometimes in the world.
12:33What it means to me is just connecting with my Heavenly Father, God.
12:35And when I go there, I just think, this is heaven.
12:38If I'm to teach these people, I need to have the spirit with me, because it's not me that's going
12:44to be doing the work, it's the spirit that's doing the work.
12:46And so I think building that relationship with God and wanting to do those things, it's what's going to make
12:51it possible for me to actually carry that spirit and be able to teach people and to love these people.
12:56Well, I mean, I think all of you guys have the spirit, because I feel like just listening to you
12:59talk about your love for the temple and your love for God.
13:02And so thank you.
13:03I know you guys got to get going.
13:05You got a lot to do.
13:05So thank you for your time.
13:09Well, if I'm adding it up right, the missionaries spend eight to ten hours a day studying the gospel in
13:14classrooms and even learning a new language.
13:16So you can see why it's crucial for them to have some downtime.
13:19I'm going to see if I can join them and school a couple of these guys.
13:23If you serve a mission as well as you serve a volleyball.
13:29All right, I've told these elders their last teaching lesson went really well, but they've got five minutes to get
13:34to the next one.
13:35So let's see who's in shape for the mission.
13:37All right, you guys ready?
13:38And go, go, go.
13:41Who gave you the best assist to get you out here on a mission?
13:44My friends.
13:45My friends all went on missions and they all influenced me too.
13:47So I'm very grateful for them.
13:49Where are you going on your mission?
13:50Singapore and Malaysia.
13:51Wow.
13:52How does having a companion on your mission help set you up for success?
13:56My companion, I was so blessed.
13:57She is amazing.
13:58She motivates me to do things that I wouldn't have really done on my own.
14:01But because I have someone who's there to do it with me and encourage me and motivate me, gets me
14:05excited to do it.
14:06You guys are in class like eight to ten hours a day.
14:10Does this help you as a missionary?
14:11Yeah.
14:12Obviously, it's here for a big purpose, but it's good to have fun.
14:32Tell me, Elder, what is this gathering for?
14:34Every week we meet here in this room and we hear from one of the general authorities and they give
14:38us an inspired message.
14:40It's really powerful.
14:41Here we go.
14:42I know that I can do all things through Christ.
14:46I hope that at the conclusion of your mission, you can relate to the words of Ammon.
14:54Yea, I know that I am nothing as to my strength.
14:58I am weak.
14:59Therefore, I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God.
15:04For in his strength, I can do all things.
15:10Wow, that was such an amazing devotional.
15:13Those young men and young women are being spiritually fed and it is tangible.
15:17You can feel it when they sing and you can see it in their eyes.
15:20And that was such a cool experience.
15:24There are a lot of great leaders here who are eager to see these young men and young women be
15:29successful on their missions.
15:30Let's see if we can track down the president of the missionary training center and see if he can give
15:34us some insights.
15:36What is the best advice that you would give to a missionary who's thinking about coming to the MCC and
15:43serving?
15:43Well, I think probably the most important thing is they're serving the Lord.
15:46Their whole purpose is to invite others to come into Christ.
15:49So it's really turning outward toward others and helping them.
15:53The second they walk and come through these gates, they are set apart full-time missionaries.
15:58And so they're no longer young men or young women.
16:00They are missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
16:04And they live a higher standard than the world.
16:07Last words that you would like to give to families who are getting ready to send someone out into the
16:13field.
16:13The best thing you can do is be a missionary yourself.
16:16The family to love, share, and abide.
16:20Well, finally, the day has come that every missionary dreams of.
16:23They're about to go out into the world to preach the gospel.
16:26Let's go see how they're feeling.
16:28Excuse me, elders, sisters, how are you feeling knowing that tomorrow you're flying out?
16:32I feel really excited.
16:33We've been here for like six weeks.
16:35I've loved being with my district, but I'm really just excited to serve the people and share God's love with
16:39them.
16:39Is anybody nervous about leaving?
16:43You're the nervous one.
16:44Like, it's nervous excitement.
16:46Yeah, yes, yes.
16:46The excitement is what's making you nervous.
16:48Yeah.
16:49There's this cool quote back here on the wall.
16:52Compared to the first time you saw that quote, and now that you've been here for five weeks,
16:56what does it mean to you now compared to them?
16:58Now when I look at it, I think more about teaching them the knowledge of the gospel
17:01instead of just thinking of baptizing them, but just sharing the joy that I have
17:04when I know of my Savior, Jesus Christ.
17:06When we follow these steps, we're following in the path of Jesus Christ,
17:09and it's just such an amazing blessing that we have.
17:11Where are you headed?
17:12Zimbabwe, Africa.
17:13Boston, Texas.
17:14Berlin, Germany.
17:15Zimbabwe.
17:16I've heard the people there are absolutely wonderful.
17:19I'm so excited to go meet the people.
17:21How's this MTC experience been for you?
17:23Oh, it's been great.
17:24Great meeting new friends, getting to learn more about the gospel.
17:27We're able to get the red dress.
17:28Did you plan that?
17:29No.
17:29No.
17:31Are you more nervous now or when you first got to the MTC?
17:35Oh, get me out there.
17:36Yeah, I was a lot more nervous when I first got here.
17:39If you could tell your family something, what would it be now that you're getting ready to fly to Germany?
17:43I just don't want my mom to be nervous.
17:44I'm doing great.
17:45She's more worried than you are.
17:47Probably.
17:48We're here with Elder Gomez.
17:49I'm glad we caught you because the day's come and you're about to leave.
17:52Yes, I am.
17:53Are you ready?
17:54I am ready.
17:54This man's ready to get some work done.
17:56All right.
17:56Thank you, Elder Gomez.
17:57I'm looking forward to hearing some good news about your experiences.
18:01I'm very excited to go on my mission.
18:03And even being here in the MTC, my faith is grown so much.
18:07I think each day being at the MTC has confirmed my decision to serve a mission.
18:10God knows each of us so individually and he's putting people in our lives to show us that he loves
18:15us.
18:16You made the decision and he's kind of helping pave the way, right?
18:19Yes, exactly.
18:20Well, we came here to the MTC to see what these missionaries are experiencing and what it's like to be
18:26here.
18:26Honestly, I feel like we're leaving inspired.
18:29These young men and young women have courage.
18:31They have faith.
18:32They have a lot of discipline.
18:34And most of all, they're committed to what they're doing.
18:37I'm walking away from this experience feeling excitement, enthusiasm, and a sense of hope for the future.
18:44So the next time you see some young missionaries out there, stop them and say hi.
18:48Get to know them because their stories are amazing.
18:51They're dedicated and they're making a lot of sacrifices to be there.
18:54And you'll be glad you did.
