00:00You've misunderstood the film.
00:02Sasha's not like any actor I've worked with.
00:05I mean, you were a total original.
00:07It's quite intimidating, actually.
00:08Before we start, I've got to say, Sasha,
00:10you're responsible for one of the most inane cultural imprints
00:14on my life that I don't seem to be able to shake off.
00:16But over 20 years now, every time I see purchase
00:18or try and install a battery, I can't help but say
00:21B82 Res batteries every single time.
00:27It's like a nervous tip.
00:28I can't even remember that.
00:29Was that from the Ali G in the House?
00:31Ali G in the House, B82 Res.
00:33And it's not even the most important part.
00:34It's just, I can't.
00:35Well, it really isn't because I can't even remember it.
00:37It's certainly stayed with me.
00:39Yeah.
00:39It's quite a good voice.
00:41I liked it.
00:41I mean, I've been working on it for 24 years.
00:44Did you ever think you'd do it face to face with the man?
00:46I thought, if I didn't say it now,
00:48I'd spend the whole interview like twitching until it came out.
00:51No, thank you.
00:51Thank you for getting it.
00:52I did read.
00:53We'll get this out of the way quickly.
00:55I did read there might be like a tour
00:56or some sort of resurgence of Ali a couple of years ago.
00:59Was that something you ever played with or?
01:01No, not really.
01:02No.
01:03It's a shame.
01:04Coogan managed to do it with Partridge.
01:05Yeah.
01:06I'm sure there'd be a burgeoning audience of B82 Reses out here waiting for it.
01:11Guys, let's talk about this one then, shall we?
01:14Ladies first.
01:15Probably.
01:16It is...
01:17Was it as cathartic a movie to make as it is to watch?
01:20Because I can't be the only person who watched it and kind of thought,
01:22I much prefer this kind of gender roles, swap world.
01:26You preferred the switch role, really?
01:28I'd love my dad to make a mayonnaise for me in a pinny.
01:31Yeah.
01:32It just seemed like a more...
01:34Tom Davies in a top knot.
01:35The whole thing does seem like a more relaxed place.
01:38But I don't know.
01:38For men, well it isn't.
01:39I mean, you've misunderstood the film.
01:42I think maybe it depends what kind of guy you are.
01:45Yeah.
01:45I guess.
01:46We're all well pruned and presented.
01:49I mean, don't let the suit fool you.
01:51I'd like to just hang about in more comfortable trousers
01:54and people talk to me about their emotions.
01:56Oh really?
01:57But yeah, what was this process like for you guys collaborating on it?
02:01I think it's this bloke at the beginning who thinks that life is difficult for men.
02:06Right?
02:07Which I hear quite a lot of people, quite a lot of men say,
02:10and then he's incredibly successful in it.
02:14He gives a job to a woman just in a kind of tokenistic way.
02:19And then ends up in this flipped world and finds it incredibly hard to succeed.
02:26And so, you know, he thinks he's attractive.
02:29He's not in this world at all.
02:31Has to go through this complete body transformation,
02:35which unfortunately I had to do.
02:37And I tried to take some shortcuts.
02:39Yup.
02:40And the idea is, you know, he gets some empathy by the end
02:44and becomes a bit of a better bloke.
02:45So it's a traditional, what they used to call a morality tale, right?
02:49Hmm.
02:50You sound in English, aren't you?
02:52Yeah, morality sounds great.
02:54You guys both have quite different comic superpowers, I would say.
02:58Like, Rosamund, you're so excellent in kind of this almost like dark black comedy humor.
03:04I care a lot.
03:04It's like a brilliant movie.
03:05But even in things like Gone Girl and Saltburn, there's like a humor to the kind of the darkness.
03:12And then, Sasha, you've been so great with your, like, physicality and kind of gonzo humor and cringe humor and
03:17things like that.
03:18What kind of sensibilities did you feel like you wanted to lean into more in making this?
03:23And how kind of, how did you guys feel kind of joyful?
03:25No, we do come from different, different, I don't know, different approaches.
03:29But that's, that's exciting because it takes you out of your comfort zone.
03:33I mean, you know, Sasha's not like any actor I've worked with.
03:36I mean, you're a total original, you know, and it's different.
03:40It's, it's, it's a different challenge, you know, being with you in a scene, finding our point to connect is,
03:47you know, was exciting for me anyway.
03:51Yeah.
03:51Well, it was a great privilege.
03:52I don't know if you've seen her in Italia.
03:53So she's one of the, you know, greatest ever screen actors and one of the greatest ever actors on stage.
03:59So it was quite intimidating actually.
04:01But it, you know, for me, I was always spoiled by playing, you know, characters in the real world because
04:08you're acting with somebody real.
04:10So when you've got an incredible actor opposite you, it makes it much easier for me to be real.
04:17And I think that's it.
04:19You know, I think these scenes, we believe them.
04:21So the, you know, the, the genre of comedy is completely real and it's sort of accidental.
04:28We're not saying gags, really.
04:29No, it's about, it's about the specificity of the people and the recognition, the people's, the audience's recognition of the
04:34situation.
04:35And, you know, and I think the lines are funny.
04:38I think the role reversal of, you know, just the casual eruption of father instead of mother, you know, is
04:44fun.
04:44It's funny, but it's not sort of laugh out loud funny.
04:47It's just that sort of, it's that recognition of what would it be if you, I don't know.
04:53I mean, we didn't call someone a ball breaker, but you know, whatever the, what's the reverse of that?
04:58Yeah, I won't say what the reverse is that way.
05:00Well, I think it's one of those films that are full of quite simple ideas, but done really, really well.
05:04It's certainly one of those that you end up smiling like throughout the movie, which I think is perfect.
05:08Yeah, and it builds and it hurts.
05:10Well, a pleasure, guys.
05:11Is that a sock in your jacket?
05:12I'd be great if it was actually just a sock.
05:14Yeah, a pair of socks.
05:15Yeah.
05:16Have a great breakfast.
