00:00On this day in space.
00:03On May 18th, 1969, Apollo 10 launched on a mission to the moon.
00:08Apollo 10 was considered a dress rehearsal for a lunar landing.
00:12It did everything the same as a real lunar landing mission,
00:14except for the part where the lander actually touches the lunar surface.
00:18The commander was Tom Stafford.
00:20Eugene Cernan piloted the lunar module, which was nicknamed Snoopy,
00:23and John Young piloted the command module nicknamed Charlie Brown.
00:27They launched from Kennedy Space Center on a Saturn V rocket,
00:30and reached lunar orbit three days later.
00:33On the first day, they made the first live color TV transmission from space.
00:37On the fourth day, Cernan and Stafford separated from Young
00:40and descended toward the lunar surface in Snoopy.
00:43The closest they got was about nine miles above the surface.
00:46When Snoopy started heading back to Charlie Brown, the module started going bonkers.
00:50It was spinning and rolling uncontrollably for about 30 seconds,
00:54because the switch was in the wrong position.
00:56But the crew was able to recover from it and return home safely.
00:59And that's what happened on this day in space.
01:01Until next day!
