00:00:01Can I bring your chin down a little bit and then give me that glare?
00:00:06Pat Summitt of Tennessee has reached a milestone
00:00:08no other Division I women's college basketball coach has ever reached.
00:00:12Career win number 800.
00:00:14They were dominant. They were the best team in the country.
00:00:18One word to describe Pat Summitt is intense.
00:00:21Three seconds! Somebody count!
00:00:23You take anything outside, you're coming out. Rebound!
00:00:27She was really the first in so many ways.
00:00:28She was so much smarter than people realize too.
00:00:31One thousand career wins!
00:00:34Pat put it out there that women can do whatever they want to do.
00:00:38She always saw what was beyond basketball.
00:00:41Every player that's played at the University of Tennessee for Pat Summitt has a diploma.
00:00:46She's been more than a coach to us and she'll be more than a coach to me for the rest
00:00:50of my life.
00:00:51It's really, really hard to quantify everything, the breadth and depth of the impact she's had.
00:00:56Everybody loved her, really loved her.
00:00:59Pat Summitt is the winningest coach in college basketball history.
00:01:05Pat Summitt the Capist it career...
00:01:08Pat Summitt själv
00:01:40Good to see you.
00:01:42One more ready.
00:01:51I just have a paper.
00:01:53Get up on that.
00:01:55I'll help you too.
00:02:02Pat, everybody wants to know how you feeling.
00:02:04How you doing?
00:02:04Feeling great.
00:02:05Pat Summitt is a legendary college women's basketball coach.
00:02:09Now she faces the challenge of her life,
00:02:11a diagnosis of early onset dementia.
00:02:13The 59-year-old Summitt,
00:02:15who has led Tennessee to eight national titles,
00:02:17is planning for her 38th season.
00:02:20Why come back to coaching?
00:02:22I love it.
00:02:24And I'm not ready to retire.
00:02:27Somebody kind of threw that out there today.
00:02:30I may be old as dirt when I'm still, you know, trying to win ball games.
00:02:35She told the newspaper,
00:02:37I feel better just knowing what I'm dealing with.
00:02:39And as far as I'm concerned,
00:02:40it's not going to keep me from living my life.
00:02:42There's not going to be any pity party, and I'll make sure of that.
00:02:47It's got to make you feel awful good the way everybody's come out.
00:02:50I'll tell you how proud they are of you for the way you've handled it.
00:02:52Well, growing up on a dairy farm, you know, I learned a lot of things.
00:02:58But my parents, they're just people that, you know, always did the right things.
00:03:06You know, and they have influenced me tremendously.

00:04:00This is where we grew up.
00:04:03Okay.
00:04:03Yeah, but she wasn't born.
00:04:05She's about six when we moved this house, I think.
00:04:07But we lived right next door to it in the log house.
00:04:10We tore down part of the log house.
00:04:12And that old barn there is where we used to play basketball.
00:04:18This is where my basketball career started.
00:04:21Hard to believe, isn't it?
00:04:22On the bottom floor is where we would feed our cows.
00:04:27And then on the top floor, my dad put up our basketball goal in the hayloft.
00:04:32My oldest brother Tommy and I would compete against Charles and Kenneth.
00:04:37We played practically every afternoon or night.
00:04:40If we got home from school, we'd play a little while before we milked.
00:04:43And then after we got through milking, we'd go play.
00:04:47Of course, I was a little bit taller than the rest of them, so we usually won.
00:04:51But I always let Pat sit outside and shoot set shots.
00:04:56Pat was as competitive as the rest of us, and she started playing on the eighth grade team as a
00:05:02fifth grader.
00:05:03We played basketball in elementary school.
00:05:06And when I got to school that fall, everybody was going,
00:05:10Oh man, Trish is coming. We're going to have a winning team this year.
00:05:14Trish is coming.
00:05:15I said, Trish who?
00:05:17And they said, Patricia Head, she's coming.
00:05:21The old saying about the Head clan was that if church doors were open, they were there.
00:05:26If school was open, they were there.
00:05:28Otherwise, they were working or sleeping.
00:05:32My mother just made me work all the time.
00:05:37That's why she's smart now.
00:05:39She had to work at home.
00:05:42Well, we all had to work because we had a lot of work to get done.
00:05:46I mean, we had the crops and we milked cows.
00:05:54Yeah, I think about friends I had.
00:05:56They went home and they might do things around the house and get their homework.
00:06:00You know, that was, that was it.
00:06:02Whereas for me, I had to work a lot harder.
00:06:04I had a lot more responsibility.
00:06:07I got 160 something cows and 120 something pigs.
00:06:12Plus some bulls.
00:06:14Whoop!
00:06:16Whoop!
00:06:18Whoop!
00:06:20She knew how to call a milk cow.
00:06:22She don't know how to call a beef cow.
00:06:24Whoop!
00:06:26You learn a lot on the farm.
00:06:28You got to put up with the weather, dry weather, the wet weather.
00:06:34And all, it's a hard life, but it's a good one.
00:06:41She'd drive a tractor, drive a truck from loading hay.
00:06:45Had one boy we got from West Tennessee.
00:06:48He was up here and he was trying to put one on her, throw up a bale of hay.
00:06:51She got out of the truck and says, you want me to show you how to put it up there?
00:06:55Take that thing, throw it right up on there.
00:06:57There was never any question about her dad's support and his love for her.
00:07:03It was shown.
00:07:05It wasn't spoken.
00:07:07So that he moved the family across county line.
00:07:13When he found out that Montgomery County and Clarksville didn't have girls basketball in high school.
00:07:19But Cheatham County did.
00:07:22Neighbors thought I'd lost my mind because we had just built a new house out on the farm.
00:07:28But that was because she wanted to play ball and they didn't have one in Montgomery County at the time.
00:07:37So we moved over there and that's where we stayed.
00:07:41She got out of high school and of course she went to Martin.
00:07:49When I first went to Martin, I said, I came to sign up for the basketball team.
00:07:55I want to try out.
00:07:56They said, well, first you have to play volleyball.
00:07:59And I said, volleyball?
00:08:02I had never really played volleyball.
00:08:04And they said, yeah, we want all of our basketball players to play volleyball.
00:08:09And then you'll be in better shape when you get ready for basketball.
00:08:14Next thing I know, I'm playing.
00:08:16Did I want to play volleyball?
00:08:18No.
00:08:19But I did what they told me I was supposed to do.
00:08:26I think a lot of people would be surprised that you were a sorority girl.
00:08:29I was a sorority girl.
00:08:31I remember getting material and was talking about, you know, the Greek system.
00:08:37And I had no idea what that was.
00:08:39I said, I don't know Greek.
00:08:40I don't know what they're talking about.
00:08:45Going into college, I was not socially very comfortable.
00:08:50You know, I was country.
00:08:51I was limited as a kid growing up on it.
00:08:54And my wardrobe was very limited.
00:08:57It's one reason I'm very, I'm very close conscience now.
00:09:00I always say, if I ever get a good job, if I ever make money, I'm going to dress nice.
00:09:08You know, I really felt inferior there in a lot of ways, socially.
00:09:14And they were so upfront and proper, and I loved it.
00:09:18And I don't want to say it scarred me, but it made a lasting impression.
00:09:22Because of that, I wanted to change.
00:09:25Mm-hmm.
00:09:27And that's one thing that I have appreciated about myself is my willingness to change.
00:09:41I had always been accepted in athletics because I was an athlete, and I was good.
00:09:46Yeah.
00:09:50She got to start every ball game down there that she played in, and that was good.
00:09:56She likes to be a starter and a winner.
00:10:00She's like, you know.
00:10:08When I was in school, played in Moscow in 73.
00:10:13It was called World University Games.
00:10:17I had a very positive experience.
00:10:21And then when I came back is when I had the knee injury.
00:10:25and that's really uh you know i i think i i found myself you know as an athlete and a
00:10:33competitor
00:10:35i didn't know i was going to be a coach until i got a phone call suggesting that the university
00:10:42of tennessee at knoxville wanted to hire me as a graduate assistant why did they believe that a 22
00:10:48year old could build a program or did they just kind of say well we need somebody to do this
00:10:54and
00:10:54you're the closest one well it wasn't like they're going to pay me big bucks right let's face it how
00:10:58and i went there on a graduate assistantship i was 22 years old i had just graduated from ut martin
00:11:05and asked me to come be the assistant a couple weeks later they called back and said the head
00:11:10coach he's taking the sabbatical will you take the head job and i was scared i'll be honest with you
00:11:17i had no preparation i'd never run a practice never coached a day in my life
00:11:27i remember the first game i coached talking to a little point guard diane brink she looked up at
00:11:33me and she said are you nervous no why am i acting like it and she'd go well your neck's
00:11:42all broken
00:11:45and it was my neck would just break out for a day
00:11:51it was probably the most challenging time of my life
00:11:55i'm coaching the team i'm teaching classes and training and trying to rehab my knee
00:12:02when i went and played on the pan am team i tell everyone i played in guard tackle sat on
00:12:07the end of
00:12:07the bench guard the water bucket and tackle the one that came in there wasn't supposed to be there
00:12:12bill wall who was the executive director of usa basketball said you're not going to make the olympic
00:12:18team and i said yes i will the reality of it was i went in i i was over overweight
00:12:27and out of shape but
00:12:30i was on a mission i was going to prove bill wall was wrong and i lost 27 pounds in
00:12:36the next year
00:12:37and got my body in incredible shape
00:12:42and i was really proud to come back and make the olympic team and be selected by my peers as
00:12:49a co-captain
00:12:56as a co-captain in the stands and you see all of these people and you just overwhelming feeling
00:13:02comes over you that wow you've made it you've made it you're one of the best in the country
00:13:09and for us it was even more special because it was the first time that women's basketball was in the
00:13:16olympics pat was a hard worker she wasn't the best player on the team but she was a hard worker
00:13:25and
00:13:25she was a very physical player
00:13:30good score there by pat head number 14.
00:13:35she played just about like she coaches same kind of intensity a lot of people have the will to win
00:13:42but what separates out of those who have the will to work no one outworked as a player and i
00:13:47don't
00:13:47think anyone ever outworks her as a coach
00:13:51no one thought we would qualify
00:13:53julianne simpson banners freeze the block away
00:13:56no one thought we'd be there and we not only made it there but obviously came home with a silver
00:14:03medal
00:14:05that's a draw and the game's over and the united states has defeated tecla kovakia
00:14:11i'm sure if you never saw before you had no idea that women's basketball could be that exciting
00:14:17that was the beginning of the notoriety of women's basketball and i look at pictures of us sitting on
00:14:27the bench pat's right next to me i look at us when we go on trips pat was sitting next
00:14:34to me on the bus
00:14:35we went to niagara falls pat was with me standing next to me and i didn't know that pat was
00:14:43a coach
00:14:44at the university of tennessee she was recruiting me and i didn't even know it
00:14:54i transferred to tennessee and it was probably one of the best decisions that i ever made in my life
00:15:02when i was on the basketball court i always felt that was my domain
00:15:09my very first game at the university of tennessee we played kentucky i scored 51 points
00:15:19but i didn't have one single black friend on that campus i would go to class and most of the
00:15:27time i
00:15:28was the only minority in class all of my friends were my teammates and i had great teammates i loved
00:15:37them all but my teammates or pat didn't know what i was going through i don't think that pat looked
00:15:47at
00:15:48her players as a black player or a white player i think she looked at us as players teammates you
00:15:57know
00:15:57we're a team coach pat head's record stands at the top nationally as the individuals have developed
00:16:06as the program itself has grown and so the lady balls have become a rich part of tennessee's overall
00:16:13athletic tradition in some ways it seems like tennessee was committed to building a good woman
00:16:20sports program we are committed to a strong program of intercollegiate athletics for women
00:16:26at the university of tennessee but it wasn't like they were throwing resources at you guys i mean most of
00:16:33what's been accomplished she was accomplished with very little resources right i look forward to the
00:16:37day when you were proud of the lady balls just as you are of the total program offered by the
00:16:42university
00:16:43of tennessee
00:16:47i remember us having to sell donuts to buy uniforms early on players provided their own shoes
00:16:56that was a time in which i did not really have anyone with me at all that i could depend
00:17:03on all
00:17:04the time so i just didn't say she knew things were starting to go in the right direction before
00:17:11tunnel line basically we had nothing and those are very pivotal moments back in the 70s the federal
00:17:18government today announced new guidelines for ending sex discrimination in college athletics
00:17:23today's rules do not mean the identical amount of money must be spent on men and women's athletic
00:17:28programs it does mean athletic money must be spent more equitably
00:17:37she was such a radical in one way but on the other hand how did she get things to happen
00:17:43you can't be just a radical to get things happen you can just talk all you want but how do
00:17:48you truly
00:17:49build something now we're talking tennessee here too we're not talking uh california or some other
00:17:53place and not only is she a radical in her own way because how she thought and wanted to change
00:17:59things for women but she was so diplomatic at the same time some people might come crash through the
00:18:07front door and demand i want this that's not my style that's not how i deal with people we hope
00:18:14you
00:18:14will buy your ticket and help us feel stokely athletic center and support the lady vols
00:18:22i think more than anything i've tried to demonstrate through performance that we deserve
00:18:29to be considered for having the best program in the country and having the resources
00:18:34a small but enthusiastic crowd welcomed the lady vols back to knoxville signs of number three in the charts
00:18:40number one in our hearts set the tone of the welcome appreciation of the lady vols efforts during
00:18:45the season and taking third place in the national tournament we feel super we played a good game
00:18:52yesterday and it's always good to come off at it with a win pat pushed you beyond your limits and
00:19:03so at the
00:19:04time you you you hated it but then you loved it when you saw the results
00:19:12and it was so much fun
00:19:21when pat and i met i was a bank examiner for the state of tennessee and pat's roommate had the
00:19:27idea
00:19:27to have a get together we're in our leisure suits the old polyester wide collar tie about as wide as
00:19:36you know your middle and pat comes bopping in in her daisy dukes and all tan from doing a camp
00:19:42in california
00:19:46she told a joke or two and entertained and i was immediately interested but you know us guys we
00:19:54sort of convince ourselves first and then we have to convince the gal well it took me three and a
00:20:00half years because we didn't get married till august 23rd of 1980.
00:20:15i am proud of pat i'm proud of the opportunity that she's had to accomplish these things of course she
00:20:22is a competitor and very determined and sets her goals very high and it's been a good role model for
00:20:28for a lot of women and that in a way it's a lot of fun my dad was very unique
00:20:34in that he was
00:20:35comfortable enough with himself as a male to go and support his more successful wife even though
00:20:44he's the president ceo of a bank he's gonna go and support and be in the front row and be
00:20:51there on
00:20:51everything and travel and do things that normally a wife would do and if my mom came home and needed
00:20:57a vent my dad would listen if she came home and you know wanted to pick his brain he would
00:21:03be the
00:21:04first one to offer his advice uh which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't pat head summit is a
00:21:10winner in four out of the last five years her tennessee women's team has made it to the final four
00:21:17and now the chance to return to the olympics once more as a coach well i think that you could
00:21:24feel
00:21:24a lot of pressure if you really thought about it and thought about the magnitude of the olympic games
00:21:30your eyes are bright and blue but i suspect there's a glitter of gold behind them you really
00:21:34think it's possible i think it's definitely possible i think it's very realistic and it's
00:21:38certainly a goal that this team has in their minds there's immediate pressure like immediate
00:21:49when you're the olympic coach like like you can't fail like it's you can't fail
00:21:58there was not a day that went by that i didn't think about you know the olympics and my job
00:22:05and
00:22:06what i had to do and so i felt tremendous pressure i'm representing all women's basketball and this
00:22:13is a great compliment your peers can give you you have to get the job done
00:22:19being an olympic coach in 84 bet really already knew that if you're going to compete at the highest
00:22:25level you need to try to get the best you can and totally you know on board them to your
00:22:32your
00:22:32philosophy your team and they got to go execute the game is over the united states women have won the
00:22:43gold medal
00:22:46and now watch this southern summit gets alive
00:22:55it meant everything after we won i cried it was just so amazing that um she had accomplished that
00:23:08for all of us it was perhaps the best ever u.s women's team in olympic competition it was hard
00:23:15work
00:23:15and i asked her yesterday will she coach on the international level again i'd say thank you but no
00:23:21thanks uh i i think that being an olympic coach is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and i certainly
00:23:26think it's something that must be passed around i think we have a lot of outstanding coaches that
00:23:31deserve the same honor
00:23:35that olympic experience it did kind of wear her out and she admitted you know that she thought it
00:23:41hurt her program for a couple years recruiting had dipped a little bit
00:23:47and so she was just so focused on getting the very best players
00:23:53to bring home that national championship you know i don't think you're taking it to them it's
00:23:58almost like you're trying to pass around their defense take it to them you get the ball on the wing
00:24:03make the penetration you know make somebody come up and play you if they don't then take your shot
00:24:08put it inside i was at auburn at the time and tennessee at the time under their standards they
00:24:16were a little down they needed to rebuild their roster a little bit and so pat called and i said
00:24:23well i don't know pat i'm happy here yeah but would you just come up for an interview just come
00:24:28look and
00:24:29whatever and i said okay so toward the end of the interview she said hey do you really think you
00:24:35can
00:24:35get me the players to win a national championship and i said i know i can get you the players
00:24:43but can
00:24:44you win it and she went uh i like your confidence i played for pat and then i got the
00:24:53opportunity to
00:24:54coach and just fell in love with it i was coaching at the university of nebraska and pat called me
00:25:01and
00:25:01no disrespect from nebraska i love nebraska but she called and said holly would i be interested in
00:25:08coming to back to work at tennessee i said pat i can be there in 16 hours we were a
00:25:17perfect threesome
00:25:18we all brought different things to the table holly was the more light-hearted hey everything's gonna be
00:25:25all right everything's good you know and i was kind of maybe in the middle and then pat was at
00:25:31no
00:25:31we need to practice five hours instead of three the first week i hired them and they were sharing an
00:25:39office next to mine and i had to be out of town and i got back and they had found
00:25:43this this picture of
00:25:45me i looked it looked like a palm picture it wasn't it they had it blown up in frame
00:25:50a bad sign to mickey and holly keep up the great work we're up pat so i went back in
00:25:57the office my
00:25:58first road trip i'd been gone i got back i walked in there and uh and i laughed yeah and
00:26:05we left it up
00:26:05there yeah it's really fun so they loosened you up oh definitely yeah definitely
00:26:25we had such loyalty among the three of us and respect for each other and love for each other
00:26:33i mean we were like sisters and i was competitive i'm competitive by nature and holly's very competitive
00:26:41by nature and so as pat we started out really well that first year and then we just built on
00:26:47it
00:26:47and in 80 86 nobody was expecting us to do much and we got to the final four
00:26:55it seems like every time tennessee gets to a final four you're always an underdog
00:26:59for the university of tennessee in her 13th season pat summit pat had gotten close to national
00:27:06championships several times but not really gotten there so she felt like there was a monkey on her
00:27:13back i'm looking for what changed there's no question in my mind that when we got a bridget gordon
00:27:19and a melissa mccray in that retreating class and then tony edwards who's mvp as a freshman
00:27:25now you're talking three athletes you're talking quickly that was impact tennessee has won the national
00:27:48championship it was this group right here that actually got us over the hump got the monkey off my
00:27:53back and brought and brought all of you a national championship in the past she had put too much
00:28:01pressure on her kids like when they would get to the final four they would get in a playoff situation
00:28:07it was too serious
00:28:12and so she would say i want these kids loose and so that kind of became a ritual for us
00:28:21that we would do something silly
00:28:25and so pat goes if we win this i'll get on the table and dance for y'all well they'd
00:28:31never even
00:28:32seen pat shake a muscle you know and i'm like okay i can't wait well she wasn't a good dancer
00:28:37it's all tennessee so tennessee has won the women's national championship i understand that we're
00:28:47going to have pat summit dancing on the table tonight that's what she promised the kids
00:28:51were more excited about that than winning the championship
00:29:08pat loved family
00:29:15whether it was her blood family whether it was her family of friends or her players
00:29:23she was just always so dedicated to that
00:29:54she struggled so hard to have him
00:29:59and of course everybody knows the story about her being on the plane
00:30:02you're underway to see a play where in pennsylvania was it i'm in pennsylvania i'm in allentown
00:30:06when we landed in allentown i said pat what's wrong she goes i think my water broke what does
00:30:15that mean i said that means tyler's going to be born here sometime in the next few hours shell and
00:30:20the
00:30:20daddy and the brother they'd all gather around me and i said now this is where we'll practice
00:30:25i thought it was kind of weird because she was sitting on a towel at the end of the couch
00:30:28and
00:30:29she kept getting up to use the bathroom getting up to go make a phone call you know and i
00:30:33was just
00:30:34like gosh is she always like this finally she comes back in and she goes demas we need to go
00:30:41i said okay i said let me where she goes now i mean we were flying as fast as we
00:30:49could fly that plane
00:30:50but the first thing they tried to do is get me to land in virginia she looked at me with
00:30:56those blue
00:30:57vicious eyes and said mickey if you let those pilots land this plane anywhere but knoxville
00:31:05tennessee they're going to have a mad woman on their hands we had lost to virginia in the regional
00:31:12finals and there was no way i was going to land in the state of virginia and when she got
00:31:19off that
00:31:20airplane and got in that ambulance i could i can't even tell you the weight of the world just off
00:31:27of my
00:31:33shoulders letting ball basketball coach pad summit and her husband rb are the proud parents of ross
00:31:38tyler summit the little guy will go by tyler or just ty you see the balls booties there coach
00:31:46summit says it's great being a mom
00:31:50that was one of the most significant changes i saw in pad was you know to really become a mother
00:31:55and
00:31:55to have such a jewel of a son as tyler and he immediately became part of the team and today
00:32:03over at thompson bowling lady ball head coach bat summit was surprised to see her newest volunteer
00:32:07all decked out in a pine-sized team uniform no it wasn't for point guard jody adams but for
00:32:13coach summit's own tyler summit tyler summit is as much a part of this team as daedra charles
00:32:19in fact daedra says she has to kiss him on the forehead for luck before every game
00:32:23and although this newest summit sometimes misses part of the action he's a born basketball fan
00:32:37i got my mojo workin' but it ain't workin' on you
00:32:46oh yeah i got my mojo workin' and i'm gonna try it out
00:32:59oh yeah well i tried in new york city oh i'm gonna try it on you oh yeah i'm workin'
00:33:11on you
00:33:14it's a merry-go-round your granddaddy's cow get it you got it yeah pull it off
00:33:34my mojo workin' on you hold it off
00:33:40hello
00:33:41hey gotta look
00:33:58Tyler made all the difference in the world.
00:34:00And he traveled with her from the very beginning.
00:34:05He was with her everywhere.
00:34:07The girls would pass him around on the bus.
00:34:09He was a part of all their lives.
00:34:12Growing up, I'm told I was the good luck charm.
00:34:20Everybody knows the playing story,
00:34:22but they don't know that my mom had to play Virginia again
00:34:25in a national championship that next year.
00:34:29I'm sure she had some choice words when we did beat them.
00:34:33Here's the thing, she never forgot it,
00:34:36but the next year they won a national championship.
00:34:43The title goes to Knoxville again.
00:34:46She's been to the Summit three times now
00:34:48with Baby in tow, she's a champion again.
00:34:51To be able to sustain that level of excellence,
00:34:55it's really difficult.
00:34:57From 91 to 95,
00:35:00we probably had the most talent
00:35:03that we've ever had assembled here.
00:35:06I mean, we were exciting,
00:35:08but we struggled with team chemistry.
00:35:14When you're trying to get to that level,
00:35:17the very best in the country,
00:35:20you've got to have that fortitude
00:35:22and that extra competitiveness.
00:35:26She's changed with the times.
00:35:28And so early,
00:35:30man, you just coached everybody the same.
00:35:33It's like tough,
00:35:35and get old, you know,
00:35:36this, this, this, this.
00:35:37And then as the years progressed
00:35:40and she saw players that,
00:35:43you know, maybe I can't be as hard on this kid
00:35:45as I can this kid.
00:35:48And I think she evolved
00:35:50and understood that, you know,
00:35:51if I'm really going to get a lot out of these kids,
00:35:54I'm going to have to change my style up a little bit.
00:35:57Now, I'm sure to having Tyler help that.
00:36:09You know, I learned a lot of what not to do.
00:36:14I think there were times
00:36:15I was really very fearful of my father,
00:36:18and I never wanted Tyler to be afraid of our VME.
00:36:23Good job.
00:36:26Good job.
00:36:26Good job, I'm Tyler.
00:36:27It's a waterfall.
00:36:28Good job.
00:36:29Good job.
00:36:31Pat's growing up
00:36:32with mostly negative reinforcement.
00:36:35Because the time that Richard grew up was,
00:36:38you know,
00:36:38think about the Depression
00:36:39and hard times and the war,
00:36:41and it makes you harsh and hardened
00:36:44in that you think that's the way
00:36:48to get things done.
00:36:49That's who you are.
00:36:51Dad, can you give me a mean look?
00:36:53A serious look?
00:36:55I didn't have glasses on there.
00:36:57Look at those blue eyes.
00:36:59That's where I got it.
00:37:00He's looking at me like he used to
00:37:02when I do something wrong.
00:37:03I didn't do anything wrong, did I, Daddy?
00:37:05It was always the boys.
00:37:15My 16th birthday party I missed
00:37:17because we had a forecast for rain.
00:37:20I was going to meet up with all my classmates,
00:37:22and my dad goes,
00:37:23no, no, we have a thousand bales of straw on the ground.
00:37:27You're going to drive the tractor.
00:37:31I was like, Dad, it's a birthday party for me.
00:37:34And he goes, I don't care whose birthday it is.
00:37:38He says, we cannot afford for the rain to come
00:37:41and let's not have this done.
00:37:43I mean, I was so upset.
00:37:45Good job.
00:37:46Okay.
00:37:47Come all the way over here.
00:37:48Now, when he said no,
00:37:50did he look at you the way you look at your players
00:37:53when you say no?
00:37:53Exactly.
00:37:54Is that where that comes from?
00:37:55Are those your father's eyes?
00:37:57No.
00:37:59We're going to work.
00:38:00I got a job to do.
00:38:02And I said, yes, sir.
00:38:05Having Tyler taught her a difference
00:38:09from the way she grew up.
00:38:11Tyler!
00:38:12Tyler!
00:38:14All right!
00:38:16All they heard growing up was,
00:38:19you didn't do this right, or that's wrong,
00:38:22or why can't you get here on time?
00:38:24Or, no, we're not going to celebrate your birthday
00:38:26because it's about to rain and we've got hay now.
00:38:29With Tyler, she learned that positive reinforcement can work.
00:38:34It's like, daddy feels violent.
00:38:35I don't tell him all that.
00:38:37Because I wasn't told that.
00:38:39I knew that, but I wasn't told that.
00:38:42Yeah.
00:38:42And I think it's important to tell people how you feel.
00:38:45You're funny, Tyler.
00:38:48You're funny, Tyler.
00:38:51I'm more emotional, more in tune with people's feelings,
00:38:55and realizing every day I'm a teacher with him.
00:38:59It also emphasized to me every day I'm a teacher with our players.
00:39:07This is a story project.
00:39:09I always tell everybody that I'm from the hood,
00:39:11but nobody believes me.
00:39:14What's up, Shane?
00:39:15What's up?
00:39:15What's up, Shane?
00:39:17What's up, Shemeika?
00:39:17These are the guys who used to dunk on me when I was younger.
00:39:20They were trying to rough me up a little bit.
00:39:22And we wasn't treating her like no little girl, neither.
00:39:25Holds claw on the glass.
00:39:27Her shot goes.
00:39:29Shemeika was the best player that we'd ever seen,
00:39:32really, at Tennessee at the time.
00:39:33She takes it to the high lane for a jumper.
00:39:35She nailed it.
00:39:37And Pat loved that ability,
00:39:39but she also loved the ability to help Shemeika off the court.
00:39:45And she was a mother figure to her.
00:39:52Her upbringing was a little unstable,
00:39:55and I think Pat gave her that stability.
00:39:58On the back floor.
00:39:59Laurence?
00:40:00Yeah.
00:40:00Okay.
00:40:00Pat had a great relationship with Shemeika.
00:40:02She understood how hard she could push her.
00:40:05And she said,
00:40:06yes, I'm going to take care of Shemeika as a basketball player,
00:40:09but man, I'm going to love her to death as a person.
00:40:12Go, Tide!
00:40:13Go, Tide!
00:40:14Throw it up, throw it up!
00:40:14Shemeika was my buddy.
00:40:17And growing up, it was like I had a lot of big sisters,
00:40:19and the players were like family.
00:40:22And that's how my mom always made it.
00:40:29Each one of us needed something different.
00:40:32We were all coming from different places.
00:40:34And I think what Pat did so well
00:40:36is making sure that she knew what we needed.
00:40:39Although she might have been harder on some people,
00:40:42sometimes that's what they needed.
00:40:43Abby, come here.
00:40:45I'm very disappointed.
00:40:46I have worked three years with you,
00:40:48not to be in this type of one-on-one with you,
00:40:51but three years for you to buy into the system
00:40:54and lead our team in that direction.
00:40:56But when you can't lead by example, you can't lead.
00:40:58So, forget it.
00:41:01Oh, Abby, Abby, Abby.
00:41:03You know, Abby kind of thought she had options on the court.
00:41:06Pat's like, no, you don't have an option.
00:41:07This is what you do.
00:41:08Come here!
00:41:10Deny one pass away!
00:41:12Abby, you're dropped back four feet off of 21!
00:41:17One day, we were watching film,
00:41:19and Stanford had beaten us,
00:41:20and Abby did not stick to our game plan.
00:41:23Pat said, Abby,
00:41:25were you not told to get up there and deny the ball?
00:41:28I am searching, Abby.
00:41:29I really am.
00:41:31Now, out of respect for me
00:41:33and our commitment to a system,
00:41:35why wouldn't you do it?
00:41:37Because she can't score.
00:41:39Boy, wrong answer.
00:41:41That was one of our keys to the game.
00:41:43Abby chose not to because she decided
00:41:45that wasn't good for the game.
00:41:46And we lose the game.
00:41:48Now, there's one thing,
00:41:49if you win the game and do that,
00:41:50we lost the game.
00:41:51Pat said, get in the coach's office right now.
00:41:55Pat looked at me and Holly.
00:41:56She goes, you two come in here with me.
00:41:59So we jump up, we go in there.
00:42:02And Pat had a cup of water in her hands.
00:42:05She goes, Abby Conklin,
00:42:07don't you ever, ever speak out like that
00:42:11and film again and tell me what you should have done
00:42:14and what we should have done.
00:42:16And Abby said, well, you know,
00:42:18but Pat got that water and reared back.
00:42:21And she does like this.
00:42:22I'm thinking, oh my God, Pat's gonna,
00:42:24she's gonna hit her.
00:42:25Well, at the last minute,
00:42:27she changed her mind and she threw it this way.
00:42:30Well, guess who it hit?
00:42:31Me and Holly.
00:42:33We got hit with the water.
00:42:36I'm like, Pat, I would have denied.
00:42:38I would have been up there denying Pat.
00:42:40What's the problem?
00:42:41Nothing.
00:42:43What you need to understand about a tough coach is,
00:42:45it's the buildup to get to that place
00:42:47where you could have that kind of connection
00:42:49with your player.
00:42:50It's what you don't see.
00:42:51It is the long hours and years.
00:42:54And then you build up enough rapport with them.
00:42:57So if you have to blow your top off
00:42:59of something they're doing,
00:43:01they don't, that's a love language.
00:43:05Abigail, if you work like that every day,
00:43:07I would love coaching you.
00:43:09I'm working on it.
00:43:10Okay.
00:43:11That's my goal.
00:43:12All right.
00:43:13Scary, scary.
00:43:16She's really good at meeting you where you are.
00:43:19And I guarantee you,
00:43:21every single player having been through that experience,
00:43:24it helps shape us into the people that we are today.
00:43:33Choosing to go to Tennessee was one of the tougher decisions I had to make.
00:43:37For a number of years growing up,
00:43:38I thought the only school that existed was Ole Miss,
00:43:41where my parents went,
00:43:42a lot of my family members went,
00:43:44my older brother Cooper went there.
00:43:46And then around my junior year in high school,
00:43:48I visited Knoxville.
00:43:50It was an ice storm.
00:43:52Didn't get to see the stadium.
00:43:54Didn't have a great view of campus.
00:43:57But I met a lot of great people.
00:43:58And that's why I ended up going to Tennessee.
00:44:01Here comes Peyton Manning,
00:44:03taking his entry as a quarterback for the University of Tennessee.
00:44:08Pat came and spoke to our team.
00:44:11And I remember leaving that meeting saying that Pat Summitt
00:44:15should chicken coach any team.
00:44:17So I was certainly aware of who Pat Summitt was
00:44:20and her basketball program because they were dominant.
00:44:25Simply put, it doesn't get any better than this in college basketball.
00:44:29A sellout crowd here at Gamble Pavilion.
00:44:32You know, UConn kind of slowly came on the scene,
00:44:35but you kind of knew Connecticut was right on the cusp.
00:44:38Connecticut controlling the tip and the steal quickly by Latina Davis.
00:44:44A lot of people ask me about the UConn-Lady Ball rivalry
00:44:49and in particular, Pat and Geno personally.
00:44:54Originally, it started off well to build women's sports.
00:44:58Elliott out front.
00:45:03They would have the opportunity to play on national TV,
00:45:06which back then was so unusual.
00:45:08And so Pat agreed.
00:45:10Again, Pat's going to agree on anything
00:45:12if it's going to put Tennessee out there
00:45:14and women's basketball out there.
00:45:16It's a 10-point lead for Connecticut.
00:45:19Rivalry brings focus.
00:45:22It just brings so much interest,
00:45:24not only to them and the rivalry, but to the sport.
00:45:28It gets people connected, and that's what you want.
00:45:31Connecticut have defeated
00:45:33the previously unbeaten Tennessee Lady Balls.
00:45:38We lost that first game,
00:45:40so that kind of started the ball rolling.
00:45:46Geno was a different kind of rival.
00:45:48Just that personality and that little edge he had
00:45:51and cockiness and, I don't know,
00:45:56Pat didn't really like that.
00:45:58People assumed that I should have this,
00:46:00you know, a cordial relationship
00:46:04where you get together and, you know,
00:46:06during the offseason, I don't want to.
00:46:10We don't talk.
00:46:12We speak before and after the games.
00:46:14That's it.
00:46:15But that's the relationship
00:46:17that Geno worked very hard to create.
00:46:19From the basket,
00:46:20for three from the corner, no good.
00:46:24UConn has won the national championship.
00:46:30When we lost,
00:46:32it was like somebody hit Pat
00:46:34in the solar plexus.
00:46:35She just hated losing.
00:46:40We learned to learn from losses,
00:46:42and she always said,
00:46:43you learn more from a loss
00:46:44than you do a win.
00:46:46Someone came up and beat Tennessee.
00:46:49She was going to get a burning desire
00:46:51to up the ante,
00:46:52and that was great.
00:46:54You're not going to hate on that person
00:46:57or that program
00:46:57just because you're going to get better.
00:46:59Pat was like,
00:47:00we're not going to get beat
00:47:02the way we did again.
00:47:04So we did go back to work.
00:47:07Hello again, everyone.
00:47:08Alongside Mimi Griffin
00:47:09and Nancy Lieberman-Klein,
00:47:10I'm Robin Roberts.
00:47:11For the first time ever,
00:47:13a repeat,
00:47:13the same four Final Four teams,
00:47:16six national titles,
00:47:17and 21 Final Four appearances
00:47:19between them.
00:47:19Mimi, in a short amount of time,
00:47:21it's turned into quite a rivalry
00:47:22with Tennessee.
00:47:23I think Gino Auriemma
00:47:24said it best
00:47:25at the press conference
00:47:26the other day.
00:47:26Winning the title last year
00:47:28meant a lot,
00:47:29but beating Tennessee
00:47:30was very rewarding.
00:47:32I guess he's using Tennessee
00:47:33as the benchmark for success.
00:47:37Razavi, that team,
00:47:3950 times a kickdown.
00:47:41That's it.
00:47:43The Lady Balls have won
00:47:45the title.
00:47:47Good, and Pat Summitt
00:47:48looked relieved or what.
00:47:49She's won over 500 ballgames,
00:47:50but this one has to be very sweet
00:47:51for the second consecutive year.
00:47:53Her Lady Balls
00:47:54are in the national title game.
00:48:04The tip controlled by Georgia.
00:48:06And Marciniak ahead of the field.
00:48:14Conklin is three for three
00:48:15from downtown.
00:48:17The fans on their feet,
00:48:19and Tennessee has won
00:48:20the national championship.
00:48:24Pat Summitt wins the fourth
00:48:26of her sparkling career.
00:48:32I went over
00:48:33to give my mom and dad a hug.
00:48:35My dad was crying,
00:48:36and he goes,
00:48:38somebody knows how to coach.
00:48:40He goes,
00:48:41I don't know if it's Mickey or Holly,
00:48:43but somebody knows how to coach.
00:48:49What I'm known for is getting up
00:48:52on the ladder after a national championship
00:48:53and helping mom cut down the net.
00:48:59My mom and I did not rehearse this.
00:49:01She just said,
00:49:02hey, time and get on the ladder.
00:49:04And so I started going up,
00:49:05and she said,
00:49:06go all the way up.
00:49:08And so I get towards the top,
00:49:09and I'm looking down.
00:49:10This is a little high.
00:49:11I don't love heights.
00:49:12And she's up there right next to me.
00:49:14She said, go one step higher.
00:49:15I'm like, no, it's too high.
00:49:17We have this whole argument
00:49:18at the top of the ladder
00:49:19about how high I'm going to go,
00:49:20and of course she won.
00:49:23But I remember that game.
00:49:25I remember the celebration.
00:49:26I remember everybody being so excited,
00:49:28and I thought,
00:49:30man, this is just the way
00:49:31it's going to be.
00:49:31At the end of the season,
00:49:32we're going to do this
00:49:33and celebrate.
00:49:33And so I thought
00:49:34that's how life was.
00:49:36You guys ready?
00:49:37Yes, I am.
00:49:40Let's go.
00:49:43You know, starting this meeting out,
00:49:45you realize that this is our beginning
00:49:47for a new season.
00:49:49Obviously, this team will be different
00:49:51from any team we've ever coached
00:49:53because you're your own,
00:49:55you will become your own personality
00:49:57and your own style.
00:49:58But the first thing that comes to my mind
00:50:00is I want it to be a year
00:50:01in which we talk about being winners.
00:50:03And winners on the court,
00:50:07winners in the classroom,
00:50:08but basically that we all understand,
00:50:10our staff, our players,
00:50:12that we're people
00:50:14that can be classified as winners first
00:50:16before we get to being athletes.
00:50:20I think I was optimistic
00:50:22going into the year.
00:50:25Actually, I felt great
00:50:26until Kelly tore her ACL.
00:50:29Telling what I couldn't tell
00:50:30the other day
00:50:31that she's tore her injury
00:50:32and she ain't loving one.
00:50:35Kelly, you would not have to be
00:50:37around her five minutes
00:50:39to realize that she's a leader.
00:50:41And she's on the sideline,
00:50:43which really hurt our leadership.
00:50:47Golly.
00:50:50Pat's gonna die.
00:50:53We're bringing some bad news
00:50:55for Kelly
00:50:56and obviously for our team.
00:50:58Worst thing happened
00:50:59that we were hoping wouldn't happen
00:51:01and that's it.
00:51:02She has a torn ACL.
00:51:04She's gonna have to have surgery
00:51:06next Monday.
00:51:07I just wanted y'all to know
00:51:09that I'm gonna put it behind me.
00:51:13I'm not gonna have a little pity party
00:51:15anymore.
00:51:16That's it.
00:51:17Even if I'm not on the floor,
00:51:19I'll be right there with you.
00:51:24When Kelly went down,
00:51:26I knew right then
00:51:27we're in trouble.
00:51:33Yes!
00:51:43I'm going down
00:51:43to Lafayette.
00:51:44Shameik was really down.
00:51:46She shook her head.
00:51:46She goes,
00:51:47Coach Summitt,
00:51:47I cannot wait
00:51:49till next year.
00:51:52You really know
00:51:53you're in trouble?
00:51:53Yes.
00:51:55A steal by Moshinguana.
00:51:58Penichero keeps it alive
00:51:59and comes away with it.
00:52:00The three.
00:52:03Eric Custon just going out
00:52:05and winning.
00:52:06And now,
00:52:07you know,
00:52:08they were going out
00:52:08and people were jumping on them
00:52:10and they weren't handling it
00:52:11very well
00:52:12and now they play catch-up.
00:52:13Final score,
00:52:15Old Dominion,
00:52:1583,
00:52:16Tennessee,
00:52:1772.
00:52:20Get your heads up.
00:52:22Listen up.
00:52:22Did we play hard?
00:52:23Yes.
00:52:24Well,
00:52:25if that's number two
00:52:25in the country
00:52:26and you fight like that
00:52:27every game,
00:52:28you haven't fought like that
00:52:29every game.
00:52:29If you play this way,
00:52:31I'm telling you right now,
00:52:32we're going to be there
00:52:33in March.
00:52:35When we came home
00:52:36from Old Dominion,
00:52:37R.D. said,
00:52:38you won't win 20 games.
00:52:39That's when I was like,
00:52:41oh, yes,
00:52:42we will.
00:52:46Everybody have a seat
00:52:47over there
00:52:48and we'll talk.
00:52:50I met the next day
00:52:51with a team
00:52:53and we sat
00:52:55and we had
00:52:55about five hours
00:52:56meeting
00:52:56and we just
00:52:58laid it out.
00:52:59I mean,
00:53:00everyone spoke
00:53:01their mind.
00:53:03They took ownership
00:53:05and once you
00:53:07take ownership,
00:53:08you're going to feel
00:53:09responsible.
00:53:11Well,
00:53:11they committed
00:53:11for the first time
00:53:12in the...
00:53:12Oh,
00:53:13they committed.
00:53:18We beat Kentucky.
00:53:19We went on after that
00:53:20and beat Purdue.
00:53:24Then,
00:53:25Vandy.
00:53:26So Conklin will put it up
00:53:28and put it down.
00:53:32So now they're acting
00:53:33like a team
00:53:34that...
00:53:34Yeah,
00:53:35they're having fun,
00:53:36they're close,
00:53:36they're together,
00:53:37they all feel
00:53:38some responsibility.
00:53:39They got personality.
00:53:40Yeah.
00:53:41I'm enjoying them.
00:53:42Yeah.
00:53:42I like what it's big.
00:53:45It is an atmosphere
00:53:47befitting a national
00:53:49championship.
00:53:50A sellout crowd
00:53:5116,359
00:53:53here at Riverfront
00:53:55Coliseum
00:53:56to watch the NCAA
00:53:57women's title game.
00:54:00He has three good
00:54:01outside shootings.
00:54:03Conklin has hit
00:54:05three threes.
00:54:07Backdoor holds
00:54:08caught.
00:54:09Assist to Jollip.
00:54:12They can smell
00:54:14a second straight
00:54:15national title.
00:54:20Five seconds,
00:54:21four seconds,
00:54:22three.
00:54:23Back to back,
00:54:24mate.
00:54:24Tennessee dribbles
00:54:25out the clock.
00:54:26Two seconds,
00:54:27one second,
00:54:28and the lady volunteers
00:54:29of Tennessee
00:54:30have repeated
00:54:32as they...
00:54:38How are you doing?
00:54:45Thanks.
00:54:47How y'all doing?
00:54:52Hey, Peyton.
00:54:53How you doing?
00:54:53Good to see you.
00:54:55Who's that?
00:54:55Peyton Manning,
00:54:56our quarterback.
00:54:57He's my buddy.
00:54:58And you're standing
00:54:59on the street waiting
00:54:59there to congratulate you?
00:55:01Yeah, how about that?
00:55:03Hey!
00:55:06Pat was great
00:55:07interacting
00:55:07with her fans,
00:55:10you know,
00:55:10people that love
00:55:10Tennessee,
00:55:11that loved her.
00:55:12She was the greatest
00:55:13Tennessee ambassador
00:55:14ever.
00:55:18All right.
00:55:20Coming in
00:55:21to visit the summits.
00:55:25This is our
00:55:26orange and white room.
00:55:27And over my
00:55:2820-some-odd years,
00:55:29I've collected
00:55:30a variety
00:55:31of creatures
00:55:32and all of these
00:55:32that people make
00:55:33for me.
00:55:34If you really
00:55:35want to stay
00:55:35with the color,
00:55:37we got an orange
00:55:38pool table.
00:55:39Yes, there's
00:55:40our lady ball bathroom.
00:55:41You got your
00:55:42little hand towel
00:55:43here,
00:55:44and you have
00:55:45your sets
00:55:46over here.
00:55:47Got a little
00:55:48UT on the top
00:55:49here.
00:55:50You never get
00:55:50away from it,
00:55:51can you?
00:55:51Can't even go
00:55:52to the bathroom
00:55:52and get away
00:55:53from the lady balls.
00:55:56University of Tennessee
00:55:57has been one of
00:55:58the best things
00:55:58that's ever happened
00:55:58at the Path Summit.
00:56:00I've been really
00:56:00blessed.
00:56:01a lot of ways
00:56:02to have family
00:56:03support and then
00:56:04to have career
00:56:05opportunities and
00:56:06then have the
00:56:06relationships with
00:56:08players and my
00:56:09staff over the
00:56:10years and people
00:56:12that believe like
00:56:12I believe.
00:56:13And you have to
00:56:14have that.
00:56:15I mean,
00:56:15you win with
00:56:15people.
00:56:16It doesn't matter
00:56:17how much you
00:56:18know, how much
00:56:20you learn along
00:56:20the way, unless
00:56:21you've got people
00:56:23that believe and
00:56:23are willing to
00:56:24work with you for
00:56:25goals that you set
00:56:27together and you
00:56:28achieve together.
00:56:29It doesn't happen.
00:56:30So it's the people
00:56:32in my life that
00:56:32have made so much
00:56:33difference for me.
00:56:35I don't know.
00:56:36Will I retire here?
00:56:37I have no idea.
00:56:38What else do you
00:56:39need in your life?
00:56:41What else do I need
00:56:42in my life?
00:56:42Yeah.
00:56:43Just more time.
00:56:45For?
00:56:47Probably for Pat
00:56:48and family and
00:56:49friends that, you
00:56:51know, other than
00:56:52work.
00:56:53So wait a minute,
00:56:54does that mean that
00:56:54you've accomplished
00:56:55everything that you
00:56:56want to accomplish
00:56:57in basketball?
00:56:57Oh, no.
00:56:58No, no.
00:56:59We're going to win
00:56:59that championship
00:57:00now, John.
00:57:01You know that.
00:57:01I don't know when,
00:57:04but definitely one
00:57:05more.
00:57:06Got to get it.
00:57:07Got to get it.
00:57:08Hope it happens here
00:57:09in the next few years
00:57:10so then maybe I can
00:57:11say that's enough.
00:57:14But you know me,
00:57:15I'm allowed to say
00:57:16one more.
00:57:16Just one more.
00:57:20My dad sometimes
00:57:21was like, Pat,
00:57:22slow down.
00:57:23You know, you got to
00:57:23slow down.
00:57:24I don't want you to
00:57:24burn out.
00:57:25You're going a million
00:57:26miles an hour.
00:57:27You know, it was wake
00:57:28up and go do a speech
00:57:29and then go to a
00:57:29fundraiser and then go
00:57:30talk to the boosters
00:57:31and go to practice
00:57:32and then come home
00:57:33and do recruiting
00:57:34calls.
00:57:34And it was this go,
00:57:36go, go lifestyle
00:57:36where my dad sometimes
00:57:38wanted her to say no.
00:57:39But I think a lot of
00:57:39what she did, she
00:57:41didn't do for herself.
00:57:42She didn't even do
00:57:42for a program.
00:57:43I think she knew
00:57:45what she was doing
00:57:46and helping women.
00:57:50I am delighted to be here.
00:57:52Why am I here?
00:57:53I'd like for every
00:57:55young lady that
00:57:57participates in high
00:57:58school sports to
00:57:59raise your hand
00:58:00and raise it high.
00:58:03You're the reason
00:58:04I came today.
00:58:07Pat was a visionary.
00:58:09So she always saw
00:58:10what was beyond
00:58:12basketball.
00:58:13And, you know,
00:58:14back then in the
00:58:15early, late 80s
00:58:17and really through
00:58:18the 90s,
00:58:19there was not a lot
00:58:20of money for
00:58:22professional women's
00:58:23basketball.
00:58:24So the women had to
00:58:25go out and make a
00:58:26living after graduating.
00:58:29And she did not want
00:58:30any of them to leave
00:58:31there without the tools
00:58:33to do that.
00:58:34I can tell you this.
00:58:35Every player that's
00:58:36played at the
00:58:37University of Tennessee
00:58:37for Pat's Summit
00:58:38for four years
00:58:39has a diploma.
00:58:41Those young women today
00:58:42are doing a lot of
00:58:43different things.
00:58:44I have one that's a
00:58:44doctor, one a physical
00:58:46therapist, an accountant.
00:58:48A lot of the young
00:58:50women that have played
00:58:51there that are teachers
00:58:51and coaches giving back
00:58:53to the game of
00:58:54basketball, giving to a
00:58:55lot of young women, a lot
00:58:57of young girls like you.
00:59:00Once I left the University
00:59:01of Tennessee, I still
00:59:03needed a couple of
00:59:05classes to finish up.
00:59:07Pat was calling me
00:59:08all the time.
00:59:09She said, you need to
00:59:10come back to summer
00:59:11school, finish up.
00:59:12I've never had a player
00:59:13not graduate so far.
00:59:15You're not going to be
00:59:15the first.
00:59:18Pat wanted us to be
00:59:19great people.
00:59:21She was a mentor
00:59:24on life, not just
00:59:26my basketball coach,
00:59:27but somebody that
00:59:28helped shape my life.
00:59:30She really wanted
00:59:31her players to play
00:59:32professionally.
00:59:33She was getting ready
00:59:34for professional
00:59:35basketball.
00:59:36Stay on me.
00:59:37And that's why she was
00:59:38so tough on them,
00:59:38because she wanted
00:59:39them to have these
00:59:40opportunities, and she
00:59:41knew she hadn't had them.
00:59:43Fulsklaw rebounds and
00:59:44throws the outlet to
00:59:45catchings.
00:59:49One of the main
00:59:50reasons that I chose
00:59:51to go to University of
00:59:52Tennessee was because I
00:59:53knew I wanted to play
00:59:54for the best.
00:59:54Good.
00:59:55Rotate.
00:59:56Quickly.
00:59:56Get out.
00:59:56Fill a spot.
00:59:57Rotate.
00:59:57And I wanted to play
00:59:58with the best players.
01:00:00My freshman year was
01:00:01not only my freshman
01:00:02year, but it was also
01:00:04the first year for the
01:00:05WNBA.
01:00:08And immediately,
01:00:09that was my goal.
01:00:10From wanting to play
01:00:11in the NBA to wanting
01:00:13to play in the WNBA,
01:00:14four years for them to
01:00:15get it right, four years
01:00:17for me to work on my
01:00:17game, and who best to be
01:00:19at the home to help me
01:00:20than Coach Slade.
01:00:23Swashbuckling may have
01:00:24its three musketeers, but
01:00:25the Lady Volunteers have
01:00:27the three Meeks,
01:00:28Shemeika Holdsquaw,
01:00:29Tameka Kachins, and
01:00:31Shemeika Randler.
01:00:32Together, the Meeks have
01:00:33scored nearly two-thirds of
01:00:35Tennessee's points.
01:00:36Combine those three.
01:00:38They make me look like I
01:00:39know exactly what I'm
01:00:40doing.
01:00:42This team is what I've
01:00:43worked 24 years for.
01:00:45They want to be really
01:00:46good.
01:00:47You know, they do.
01:00:48They aspire to be the best.
01:00:53Certainly when I was in
01:00:54college, I went to a lot of
01:00:56Lady Vols basketball games.
01:00:58We wanted to go see Shemeika,
01:01:01Tameka, Shemeika Randle.
01:01:03Those were the games we wanted
01:01:04to go see.
01:01:05They were dominant.
01:01:06They were the best team in the
01:01:06country.
01:01:07The first team ever to go
01:01:1139-0, and they have won their
01:01:14third straight national
01:01:16championship.
01:01:19I'm five years old.
01:01:20We win a national championship.
01:01:22I'm six years old.
01:01:22We win a national championship.
01:01:23I'm seven years old.
01:01:24We win a national championship.
01:01:26I thought this is just the way
01:01:27life works.
01:01:30People don't understand how
01:01:31hard it is to win one
01:01:33championship, let alone back-to-back
01:01:36championship, and even more so,
01:01:38back-to-back-to-back
01:01:40championship is hard.
01:02:01In the years between the 1998
01:02:04national championship and the 2007
01:02:06national championship, not all the
01:02:09fans stayed happy.
01:02:11I remember 2004, 2005, 2006, I'm
01:02:15going to school, and the radio's
01:02:17on, and there's people calling in
01:02:18saying, maybe the game's passed
01:02:20Pat Summitt by.
01:02:22You know, maybe she's lost it.
01:02:24You know, maybe something's going
01:02:25on.
01:02:25And again, we're still making the
01:02:26final four.
01:02:27We're still winning SEC
01:02:28championships.
01:02:28We're still doing all this.
01:02:29But the standard of the fans was a
01:02:33national championship or nothing.
01:02:34The Connecticut Huskies!
01:02:37They did it!
01:02:38Those were some really tough,
01:02:40fractious times.
01:02:42Pat Summitt denied a seventh-actional
01:02:45title tonight.
01:02:47And then Candace Parker raised the
01:02:49level of the Lady Vols.
01:02:51Tennessee-bound Candace Parker leads
01:02:53Naperville Central against New Trier.
01:02:56Vicious block from Parker.
01:02:57Parker inside.
01:02:59Makes it look easy.
01:03:01Candace was a player that could play
01:03:03the one and five positions.
01:03:05She could play all positions.
01:03:06And we had, Pat had never had that
01:03:08type of player.
01:03:09Parker out, muscles, shoulder for
01:03:11the board.
01:03:12With a stoner right in the hip of
01:03:14Parker all the way down.
01:03:15Oh!
01:03:18Candace wanted to win just as much as
01:03:20Pat Summitt wanted to win.
01:03:21And I think Candace saw the results of
01:03:24what Pat got out of her.
01:03:26Parker, great pass.
01:03:28Parker, another good pass.
01:03:30Augustine got it in the five.
01:03:33Tennessee wins a national championship.
01:03:39Candace Parker and Pat Summitt were
01:03:42phenomenal in this game.
01:03:44It's tremendous because of what she
01:03:46brought to our basketball team here,
01:03:49the excitement she brought to the
01:03:51women's game, and the fact that in
01:03:53big games, that's when she played big.
01:03:56Spencer, lead pass, Parker again.
01:03:58Watch out!
01:03:59Ha-ha!
01:04:01Slam dunk!
01:04:04Did she dunk twice?
01:04:06Twice at home.
01:04:07But she didn't dunk twice at UConn, though?
01:04:09No, once.
01:04:11Okay.
01:04:11Gino couldn't handle twice.
01:04:13Gino couldn't handle twice.
01:04:13Ha-ha!
01:04:16Parker was three to shoot.
01:04:18Fifteen-footer off balance.
01:04:20Brained it.
01:04:22Pat Summitt and Destiny have met seven
01:04:25times before, the second time in her
01:04:28brilliant career.
01:04:30Pat Summitt has led Tennessee to back-to-back
01:04:33national championship.
01:04:40All of us put our trust in Coach Summitt.
01:04:43You play for her because she's been such
01:04:46an inspiration and just for the game of
01:04:48women's basketball.
01:04:49She's been there for the growth.
01:04:52I mean, I'm completely different than I was
01:04:54when I came in, and I feel like she's a real
01:04:56big part of that.
01:04:59I want to talk about your life in the last
01:05:03five years because it ain't all been a bed
01:05:06of roses and how you keep going.
01:05:11I was a sophomore in high school when my
01:05:15parents got divorced, and that was really
01:05:18weird because up until that point, there
01:05:21wasn't a lot of things that publicly had
01:05:25gone wrong for the Summitt family.
01:05:27The divorce was the first time when, you
01:05:30know, not everything was good to the public
01:05:32eye, and so I think it took a toll on Mom.
01:05:35Remember that whole time period, you know,
01:05:37with her dad passing away, the divorce?
01:05:42There were just things that started to happen
01:05:44where life wasn't, you know, super easy anymore.
01:05:50I'd had a, you know, a lot of personal
01:05:52struggles, and I think sometimes they happen
01:05:56for a reason, and you learn to fight
01:05:58through them and try to be a great role
01:06:00model for others, and that's exactly what I
01:06:03tried to do for our team.
01:06:06She knew other women would be watching how
01:06:09she handled this, and the world would be
01:06:11watching how she handled this.
01:06:13Do you think you needed the basketball in your
01:06:17life at that time to get you through that?
01:06:19I mean, did it give you a place to put your
01:06:22energy, your pain?
01:06:23Did it give you a way to repurpose all of what
01:06:25you were going through so you could make it
01:06:27through?
01:06:27Oh, absolutely.
01:06:28I mean, because I love what I do every day,
01:06:31and I'm around people that I enjoy, people that
01:06:34inspire me, in turn, I want to inspire them.
01:06:38And it's not like a work day.
01:06:41It's like an opportunity every day to some way,
01:06:45somehow, help these young women to be the best
01:06:48they can be on the court, in the classroom, and in life.
01:06:54Is there anything about Pat Summitt that the avid
01:06:59Lady Ball fans would not know?
01:07:01I don't know.
01:07:03Probably how much I enjoy what I do,
01:07:06how much I love life.
01:07:08Wish that I was on a rocky top down in the Tennessee hills.
01:07:15Pat was really fun to be around, and I think people
01:07:18who came to talk to Pat were like,
01:07:20whoa, this woman is, she's not, I kind of like her.
01:07:24You know, she's not this mean, I'm going to stare you down
01:07:27person.
01:07:28You know, Pat, Pat loved to have fun.
01:07:30Good old rocky top.
01:07:40I would say probably two years before Pat got diagnosed.
01:07:45I just saw subtle things.
01:07:48Forgetting how to come home from the hairdresser.
01:07:53Speaking to a player and then kind of not remembering it.
01:07:59When I really saw something is when my mom would say,
01:08:03hey, when is practice?
01:08:04My mom never would ask, what time is practice?
01:08:07That was the one thing that was her favorite part of the day.
01:08:10She got to teach, and she'd say, wait, when's practice today?
01:08:14And I'm thinking, I said, four, but why are you asking me that?
01:08:19I was working at Texas, and she called me and said,
01:08:23would you come back to Tennessee?
01:08:25She goes, I need you.
01:08:26I need you back here.
01:08:28I said, okay, I'm there.
01:08:34Finally, I convinced her to go to the Mayo Clinic.
01:08:39The doctor said, Coach Spinal Tap confirmed it.
01:08:43You have Alzheimer's.
01:08:46After the diagnosis, my mom really was asking God, why me?
01:08:53She was struggling with it.
01:08:57We finally decided she was going to keep coaching,
01:09:00and then we had to figure out, how do we tell people?
01:09:04A towering figure in college basketball
01:09:07is about to teach her players a brand-new lesson in grit.
01:09:10Pat Summitt has led women's basketball
01:09:12at the University of Tennessee for 38 of her 59 years,
01:09:15winning over 1,000 games,
01:09:16and she's determined to win even more.
01:09:19Despite the diagnosis, she just revealed
01:09:21early-onset dementia at only 59.
01:09:24You know, it's hard to fight an invisible opponent,
01:09:28and I think that now we know what we're up against,
01:09:31and we're ready to take the next chapter in our lives.
01:09:36We had all the players in our office,
01:09:39in our conference room,
01:09:43and she was a typical Pat,
01:09:51telling the kids what she had,
01:09:54and don't feel sorry for me.
01:09:59It's amazing when you're talking about your life
01:10:02and the direction it's going,
01:10:05and you divert it and say,
01:10:06it's not about me.
01:10:07You know, the kids are crying, upset,
01:10:09and she goes, look, I'm fine.
01:10:11I'm going to get through this.
01:10:12We're going to get through this,
01:10:14and we're going to go on business as usual.
01:10:16Check out all this orange.
01:10:17Nearly half the students on campus
01:10:19are all wearing orange.
01:10:21That's for Pat Summitt!
01:10:22Yes, Pat!
01:10:25That's all I'm talking about, girl.
01:10:27Sports is me against you,
01:10:30and to see so many put on a shirt that says,
01:10:33We Back Pat,
01:10:33or talk in a press conference about Mom,
01:10:36they don't have to do that.
01:10:37You know, there's nothing making them do that,
01:10:39but I think it just shows the impact that Mom had.
01:10:44I love this Pat-Hair Summit.
01:10:46Like, I grew up in Knoxville,
01:10:47and I always watched her play.
01:10:49I always watched her coach,
01:10:50and she's just always been like inspirational to me.
01:10:59I remember, like, what does that mean?
01:11:03Because you hear about Alzheimer's,
01:11:05but, like, what is dementia?
01:11:08And she, you know, talked through it,
01:11:10but she's like,
01:11:10But Kat, don't worry.
01:11:11Don't worry.
01:11:11We're going to fight this.
01:11:13Like, I'm not dying.
01:11:14Like, we're going to fight this.
01:11:16And you believe it
01:11:19because she's one of the strongest people
01:11:20you know in your life.
01:11:26We kind of move forward in life a little different,
01:11:31but we've got to keep moving forward,
01:11:32and that's what Pat wanted.
01:11:36We all just stay busy,
01:11:38and we did what we try to normally do with Pat healthy.
01:11:44I think the first question everybody's asked me is,
01:11:46Well, how's Pat doing?
01:11:49And I say she's fine.
01:11:51She's at every basketball practice.
01:11:53She's still our head coach
01:11:55and doing a heck of a job.
01:11:59She discussed it with us.
01:12:01This is how we're going to handle it.
01:12:03This is how we're going to move forward.
01:12:06You know, we've got to put on our game face,
01:12:08and that's what we did.
01:12:11You know, it's like that duck underneath.
01:12:13Your feet are paddling like crazy.
01:12:16Just tell me what to do.
01:12:18Rock on, sister.
01:12:19You're good.
01:12:20We weren't going to let Pat be in a...
01:12:24I wasn't going to let Pat embarrass herself.
01:12:26Just wasn't going to do it.
01:12:30I mean, all the years that she led me to this point,
01:12:38there's no way I wasn't going to have her back.
01:12:40No way.
01:12:42So that was my job.
01:12:44That was my love for her and my friendship for her.
01:12:47Outside of coaching.
01:12:48Outside of coaching.
01:12:49I didn't have to coach another day at the University of Tennessee.
01:12:53But I was going to make sure that Pat was getting taken care of.
01:12:56When she announced it,
01:12:59you know, I don't know.
01:13:00I had mixed feelings about it.
01:13:02You know, I liked the fact that she announced it
01:13:05just to help other people.
01:13:07And I knew that's why she was doing it.
01:13:11And then I knew that it was close to her having to retire.
01:13:21And a big announcement by a towering figure in sports.
01:13:24Pat Summitt is stepping down.
01:13:30I can tell you I have loved my work at the University of Tennessee.
01:13:37It's been awesome.
01:13:38And I can say for almost four decades,
01:13:42it has been a privilege to make an impact on the lives
01:13:47of 161 women who have worn the orange.
01:13:53I am so proud of them,
01:13:56the Lady Vol student-athletes,
01:13:58and an honor to see them graduate
01:14:02and become successful young women.
01:14:06Together with these young women,
01:14:09a great staff,
01:14:10and a supportive administration,
01:14:13we will have taken a magnificent journey.
01:14:18We have grown the game of women's basketball
01:14:21each and every day.
01:14:25Holly, I want you to come up here.
01:14:27It is now time to turn over my whistle to you.
01:14:43I got drafted by the Indiana Fever,
01:14:46and when we were on our championship run,
01:14:49Pat came,
01:14:50and she was up in a suite
01:14:54across from the bench.
01:14:56There was a line from up there
01:14:59all the way down to the court,
01:15:01and she stayed and signed
01:15:05every single autograph,
01:15:07talked to every single person,
01:15:10took a picture with every single person
01:15:11that wanted a picture.
01:15:14Despite everything else that was going on,
01:15:17that's just who she was.
01:15:22You could say,
01:15:23okay, how do you beat Pat Summitt's legacy
01:15:25as a coach?
01:15:26I don't know if you can't.
01:15:27You don't.
01:15:28But I think this is her greatest legacy,
01:15:30getting out in front of this terrible disease,
01:15:33starting this foundation,
01:15:34and trying to help others.
01:15:38I am honored that the Southeastern Conference
01:15:42continues to support the work
01:15:44of the Pat Summitt Foundation
01:15:46and our fight against Alzheimer's.
01:15:50My mom did something different
01:15:52in that when she got that disease,
01:15:53she did not hide.
01:15:55She said,
01:15:56I'm going to be in the public eye.
01:15:57If I slip up and say something,
01:15:59that's okay.
01:16:00Mickey and Holly and I
01:16:01were more worried about my mom
01:16:02saying something wrong
01:16:03than my mom was.
01:16:04My mom didn't care.
01:16:07She wasn't going to be embarrassed
01:16:08because she knew that
01:16:10that's what she needed to do
01:16:10to help her family
01:16:11and help her program.
01:16:19Today, 13 Americans received
01:16:20the nation's highest civilian honor,
01:16:22the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
01:16:24This was her ninth trip to the White House.
01:16:26This was the first one, though.
01:16:27It wasn't a team award.
01:16:28It was about her
01:16:29and that battle that she made
01:16:31so public a year ago
01:16:32as she fights against Alzheimer's.
01:16:36In 38 years at Tennessee,
01:16:38she racked up
01:16:39eight national championships,
01:16:41more than 1,000 wins.
01:16:43Understand this is more
01:16:44than any college coach,
01:16:45male or female.
01:16:47She's still getting up every day
01:16:49and doing what she does best,
01:16:50which is teaching.
01:16:51The players, she says,
01:16:52are my best medicine.
01:17:00We were giving her
01:17:01the Legacy Award at the U.S. Open
01:17:03and she wasn't 100%
01:17:05and I could tell.
01:17:07But she says,
01:17:08you know, Billy,
01:17:09the most important thing to me
01:17:13is that every one of my players graduated.
01:17:15All right.
01:17:17Am I smart enough to be here?
01:17:19100% graduation.
01:17:21She says,
01:17:22that's my biggest accomplishment.
01:17:25Well.
01:17:27Each month that went by,
01:17:29I could tell even the good days,
01:17:32she's not going to remember that.
01:17:34Our pastor in Knoxville said,
01:17:36you know,
01:17:37you're going to lose her twice, right?
01:17:40And it was something
01:17:41that really stood with me
01:17:43because he was right.
01:17:45You know,
01:17:45you lose them twice.
01:17:47You're going to lose them mentally
01:17:47and then lose them physically.
01:17:52I got to visit with Shemequa
01:17:53and she was sharing with me
01:17:55about kind of her last visit with Pat.
01:17:59And so they were talking
01:18:02and they said that
01:18:03one of my commercials came on
01:18:06and Pat said,
01:18:10that's my friend, you know.
01:18:11And so that was,
01:18:14that was kind of hard to hear,
01:18:17you know, at the time,
01:18:18just thinking what she was going through
01:18:20and kind of feeling.
01:18:22But the fact that she kind of,
01:18:24that voice kind of,
01:18:25you know,
01:18:28stirred a memory in her mind.
01:18:29And so I'm glad to know
01:18:30that, you know,
01:18:32that Pat,
01:18:34you know,
01:18:34saw me as a friend.
01:18:35She was a great friend to me.
01:18:36And, you know,
01:18:36I miss her,
01:18:37miss her all the time.

01:18:50A lot of mom's friends and family,
01:18:52they were,
01:18:52they were happy to know
01:18:53that there's another Patricia Summit
01:18:55somewhere in the world.
01:18:57And she's not going to know
01:18:58what that name means for a long time.
01:19:02Oh, you want me to do that?
01:19:03Okay.
01:19:04But my wife, Brooke,
01:19:05and I said it was a no-brainer
01:19:07to name our daughter after mom.
01:19:12Whoa.
01:19:14Every night,
01:19:15we'll lay down with our kids.
01:19:16We'll do prayers.
01:19:17But then we'll talk about
01:19:18some sort of life lesson.
01:19:20It could be something
01:19:21that happened that day
01:19:22or it can be something
01:19:23we're just trying to reinforce.
01:19:25And I find myself over and over saying,
01:19:27Grammy taught me that.
01:19:32Say, buddy,
01:19:33try not to move your body.
01:19:34Get your right in front of you.
01:19:36Ready?
01:19:37Yes.
01:19:38Yeah.
01:19:38Good.
01:19:42I hope that our kids
01:19:44remember my mom
