01:00We are a collective of autistic journalism students and we are very happy to have you join us today.
01:05No subject is out of bounds, no questions off the table, anything might happen.
01:10Good.
01:11So, without further ado, welcome to the Assembly.
01:16Thank you.
01:21Okay, so Abby, can you get yourself onto this mark here?
01:27Okay, in three.
01:30Tonight, the Assembly returns.
01:33And graduates from past series are back.
01:37Another day.
01:38Another prep.
01:39And Lee Sales is mentoring us.
01:41Yay!
01:43Bye.
01:45The students have graduated from the Journalism Foundations course and they're ready for the next step.
01:50Taking us on the road.
01:51Wow.
01:53And behind the scenes.
01:55This is really awesome.
01:57To level up our media skills.
01:59Hey, Abby, we're about to record a song.
02:01Okay, I'm ready to go.
02:03On both sides of the camera.
02:05Square up to the camera.
02:07Some of Australia's most celebrated names are taking the hot seat.
02:11No making me cry, okay?
02:13For interviews like you've never seen before.
02:15What do you consider your most important decision?
02:17Um.
02:18Have you ever been arrested?
02:20That is a good question.
02:21What is the most bogan thing you've ever done?
02:23Oh, ho, ho.
02:25You've got this, Jess.
02:28Tissue girl is back again.
02:30This is the most fun I've ever had.
02:33We are Miss Bentley.
02:47I go first because I'm the disabled one.
02:52Look, Andrew, go.
02:53I'm going to put my lonely headphones in now.
02:56Let me guess.
02:56I am right here as always behind these annoying-ass plants.
03:03It's a good plan.
03:04Everyone, be quiet.
03:05Leigh's coming.
03:06Good morning, everyone.
03:08Good morning.
03:09How are we all?
03:11Good.
03:11Okay, would you like to know who our next guest is?
03:14Yes, please.
03:14Give us a guess.
03:15I'm going to know.
03:16He is one of Australia's most popular comedians.
03:20He's had a career of a couple of decades on both television and radio.
03:24Oh, my God!
03:25Also a very busy and popular stand-up comedian.
03:30It's Dave Hughes.
03:32Oh, my God!
03:35Now, what do you all know about Dave Hughes?
03:38It was on the project.
03:40He was on, you see, we have a problem.
03:43Hello, my name is Dave Hughes.
03:45And like everyone else, I've got problems.
03:47Three of them are my children.
03:49And don't get it wrong, I love them.
03:51And I've finally got something that I'm prepared to die for.
03:54But the thing is, I probably want that day to be today, to be honest.
03:58He was the goblin from next door from Do Not Watch This Show.
04:02Hang on.
04:04You're that fella from that Do Not Watch This Show show, aren't ya?
04:09He was on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.
04:12And he was, I think he was a judge on The Masked Singer.
04:15I think I might have an idea here.
04:17Yeah?
04:18Yeah, we were talking controversial sports star.
04:20I think this person, highly strung, might be a tennis player.
04:26Savannah?
04:27Oh, he has a strong Australian accent.
04:30He really does, doesn't he?
04:31I can actually do it.
04:33Can you show me?
04:34Oh, yeah, hey, how are you?
04:36Yeah, how are you, everyone?
04:37Dave Hughes.
04:38Shall we split into groups and go and work on our questions?
04:41All right, let's do it.
04:44Okay, go and get my notebook.
04:47I feel so excited about meeting Dave Hughes.
04:50This is probably about going to be the best one of the season.
04:53So he's been a very funny man.
04:57He's been on The Glass House, Spics and Specs, and even on The Logies.
05:01Was he ever up for a gold or no?
05:04Never even up for a gold.
05:05Oh, my God.
05:06I feel bad.
05:10Hello.
05:10My name's Lee.
05:11Nice to meet you.
05:12Hi, Lee.
05:13I'm Anastasia.
05:13Lovely to meet you.
05:14Looking forward to doing Hughesy?
05:16I'm excited to see a funny man.
05:18Fun guy.
05:18Do you know much that Dave Hughes has been on, Savannah?
05:20I do know the show, Hughesy, We Have a Problem...
05:22Because whenever there's drama happening within the family or a group of friends of mine,
05:25I say, Hughesy, we have a problem.
05:27Ha, ha, ha.
05:30I think he'll be a good guest.
05:31I think, um...
05:32He'll tell stories.
05:33Even, yeah, even before his mask breaks down, he'll probably at least be good at chatting
05:38to us.
05:39I guess my thought is whether it'll feel like he's having a conversation with us or whether
05:44he's kind of performing.
05:46Yeah, that's true.
05:47That is a very good point.
05:48Have to see if we can come up with some creative questions to bust him out of that.
05:51Yeah.
05:53Hughesy's been around so long and there's so much content online about him.
05:57It's actually quite hard to wade through it all.
05:59So what I'm going to do is take the students to a comedy club where he's performed to just
06:03try to get to the essence of the man.
06:08All right, let's go.
06:09Come on in.
06:10Whoa, ho, ho, ho.
06:12Look at this play.
06:14What I'm hoping is that they get a sense of what it's like backstage in a theatre, which
06:19is always really exciting even when there's nobody here.
06:21So this is backstage for the performers.
06:25Ooh.
06:26Okay.
06:26But also what it feels like when you walk out onto a stage.
06:29I want them to imagine that the room is full of people.
06:32And you are on stage at the Edinburgh.
06:36This is really awesome.
06:39Wow.
06:40Ooh.
06:43Oliver, you've had a bit of experience in theatre.
06:45What do you reckon would be going through your mind if you were stepping out with so many
06:49people here?
06:49I think I'd be nervous, but I often find that the nerves are what fuels the energy to go
06:55on stage.
06:55Would anyone be interested in having a go of some stand-up?
07:06Hello.
07:09Hello.
07:10I should probably tell you about myself.
07:13Mi nombre, Oliver.
07:37A get off.
07:37Yo estaba en casa, lo lo he de.
07:39Aquà viene Fletcher.
07:42¡Gracias!
07:48¿Did you hear about the circus fire?
07:50It was intense.
07:53Hello, everyone.
07:55I'm going to be doing an impersonation of a journalist.
07:58Let's see if you can guess who this is.
08:00Hello, Prime Minister.
08:02Why aren't you answering the question?
08:05You're not answering the question, Prime Minister.
08:07This is politics.
08:08Guilty. Guilty.
08:09Prime Minister, you're not giving us a proper answer.
08:12And for the next guest, Lee Sayles.
08:17Do you know what?
08:18As hilarious as I would be, and as much as I would bring the house down, I have actually
08:22got a real comedian here to talk to you.
08:35I've invited Will Anderson to come along today to tell the students a bit about what it's
08:39like doing stand-up, but also he's a mate of Dave Hughes, so perhaps to give them a bit
08:42of intel on Dave.
08:44Everyone, this is Will.
08:46Hello.
08:46Hello, Will.
08:47Thanks for having me here today.
08:48He's one of the country's most successful stand-up comedians, has his own TV show.
08:53And so, Will, thank you very much for coming in to have a chat to us.
08:56I mean, it's pretty exciting to interview Dave Hughes.
08:59Yeah.
09:00Has anyone got something they want to ask, Will?
09:02Out of all the questions we could ask, what do you think would make the best conversation
09:05with him from your experience knowing him?
09:08That is, firstly, an excellent question.
09:10Thank you.
09:10And I might even steal that question to Hughes when I'm interviewing people, because that's
09:15a very good way to start a conversation, I think.
09:18How do you talk to Hughesy?
09:19Well, firstly, I think sports is a good way to start.
09:23If you want some small chat, he loves his sports.
09:25He's obsessed by the Carlton Football Club, who are terrible.
09:27You have to be a comedian to like the Carlton Football Club, but I think also the other thing
09:31you've got to realise with Hughesy is he loves to talk, but he's talked so much over his
09:35career that what he'll really love is being asked a question he hasn't been asked before.
09:40There's Hughesy, and then there's David Hughes.
09:43What is the character and what is the person?
09:46And I mean, I think that's a really great question.
09:49And what I would add to that is, how does becoming the persona night after night affect
09:55who the real person is?
09:57That's what I'm interested in, Dave Hughes, the man and all his eccentricities.
10:02I think you will find him a absolutely generous, funny, willing to laugh, I think he'll absolutely
10:09just love getting the opportunity to be asked questions by you.
10:13But ask him some hard ones.
10:22Oh, it's a good crew.
10:24Yeah, it's a good crew.
10:25I love it.
10:26Amazing crew.
10:27Fantastic.
10:28How many times have you been to the ABC?
10:30When this building first opened, I was here, so a TV show called The Glass House.
10:35I've been having nervous wheeze in this building since 2003.
10:40We can go with the toilet humour if we want.
10:42It's all good.
10:43OK, we're good to go.
10:44So, Pat, do you want to kick things off?
10:47Hello, everyone.
10:49This is a safe space.
10:50Everyone can relax and be themselves.
10:53There will be no judgement.
10:55Please do what you need to join in.
10:56For example, fidget, move, take a break, and yes, even go to the toilet if you need to.
11:02Ask if you need anything to help and you will be included.
11:06Thank you.
11:07Mitch.
11:08OK.
11:10Hello.
11:11I'm Mitch.
11:11Hi, Mitch.
11:13So, what makes you love the AFL team Carlton so much because they don't win very often.
11:19No, that's a very good point and I hope the players are watching so they can improve their
11:24play.
11:28When I was five years old, which is a long time ago, Carlton were on top of the ladder and
11:33I supported another team, but a five-year-old friend of mine said, why don't you go for
11:38Carlton?
11:39And I looked at the ladder and said, I don't know why.
11:42I should.
11:42And so I started supporting Carlton in 1976 and for the first, for the next 20 years,
11:48that was a good decision because we were always winning.
11:51We won a lot of premierships and then it went wrong.
11:55In 2002, we just went to the bottom of the ladder and we really haven't improved in all
12:00that in the last 23 years and that was, it coincides with when I met my wife.
12:07The whole time we've been together, I haven't been happy.
12:11Oh no.
12:12Don't say that.
12:14Yeah, but she, because of Carlton have been terrible, so we may have to get divorced.
12:18Um.
12:19Oh.
12:20So I can.
12:21Oh no.
12:22Well guys, it's turned into Oprah, has it?
12:25Um.
12:26No, I won't get divorced.
12:27I'll stay with her, but she needs to realise I've sacrificed.
12:30Yeah.
12:31So, it's sad.
12:32Yeah.
12:33I'm sorry to bring you down, but go to the Swannies.
12:35Oh.
12:36The Swans win a lot and it annoys me.
12:39Thanks Mitch.
12:39Willow.
12:40Hi Dave, my name's Willow.
12:42Hello Willow.
12:43Do you get stage fright because I do?
12:45What do you do to get over your stage fright?
12:47I used to get stage fright a lot.
12:49So, back then I just, you just power through.
12:52But you know, lately I realised, and this is true, it's only really recently and I've
12:58been in showbiz for 25 years, longer, 30 years.
13:01Lately I realised, no one cares.
13:04And you know what?
13:05The first time I did stand-up comedy, I'd been dreaming about it since I was 14 or 13.
13:10And I was 22 when I first started, I'd failed uni a couple of times.
13:15And my first ever gig, no one laughed.
13:19And I was like, the spotlight was on me, I felt like I was being interrogated.
13:24And in my brain was going, you're a loser and you're going to be on the dole for the
13:30rest of your life.
13:31That's what's happening internally.
13:32That's not a good way to make a room relax.
13:34And I was talking about being teased at school.
13:36That was my schtick, my, what I was, my anger was.
13:40And as I walked out of the room after no one had laughed, some, some audience members said
13:44to me as I'm walking out, feeling humiliated, that they were right to tease you.
13:49Oh, no, no, no, no.
13:50Exactly, but, so I felt even worse, but I thought if I don't go back the next week to
13:56this same comedy club, I'll never do it again.
13:58Yeah.
13:59And you know, as I realised, even in that failure, what I realised was, I'm not physically hurt.
14:04So it's my choice whether to, you know, to be offended or not.
14:09So I went back the next week and I did okay.
14:12But then the next time I did, the third time, as I walked on stage, I thought to myself,
14:16something come to me, you're a winner just for doing this.
14:19It doesn't matter what happens.
14:20I relaxed.
14:22And that third time in 1993, I had possibly the best gig I've ever had.
14:29And everyone laughed so much, in my mind, they did.
14:32And I walked out of that, I floated out of the room at that time.
14:35And I knew I'd found my life's calling.
14:38Aww.
14:38I'll remember that next time I get stage fight.
14:40Thank you.
14:41Abby?
14:41Oh, thank you.
14:44Hello, Dave.
14:45Welcome to the assembly.
14:47Hello, Abby.
14:47Dave, how exactly does someone learn to talk like that?
14:52Is there a special school for Aussie bogan accents?
14:56Oh!
14:56Yeah, no.
14:57Wait, no.
14:58Hang on, wait.
15:00No, seriously, Dave, can you tell us about The Voice and how successful it has made you?
15:07Yeah, look, I know probably a third of the comedians in Australia do an impersonation of me on stage and
15:14get laughs.
15:15And so, but I take it as a compliment because it means people know who I am.
15:19So, I don't know why I speak like this.
15:22I didn't mean to speak like this.
15:23Um, I remember back being on The Masked Singer and sitting next to Lindsay Lohan, you know, international bloody superstar.
15:31And the first time I met her, she's like, why don't you speak English?
15:35I said, I am Lindsay Lohan.
15:40You should be like, oh, I'm sorry.
15:42Jolly good show, isn't it?
15:45See, that's funny.
15:46They're really laughing at him now.
15:47So, I should.
15:49You know what?
15:50You guys are really helping my act.
15:54Well, I think your voice is very funny and every time I listen to you talk, I laugh.
15:58Yeah, but some people don't.
16:00But that's fine.
16:01And I appreciate that.
16:02I do as well.
16:03But, um, yeah, you're not going to please everyone.
16:05You have been in comedy for decades.
16:08How have you seen the industry change over the years, especially when it comes to being more inclusive
16:13or are comedians still making jokes about people with disabilities like me?
16:19Um, look, I think it has.
16:21Generally, over the years, I haven't had to worry about that because most of my jokes are on me.
16:27You know, and no one can complain about me mocking myself.
16:32So, occasionally you do a joke and you don't think it's going to offend people, but then it does.
16:37So, and you know, you might have to apologise.
16:40I remember I did a joke about diabetes once and the Diabetics Association weren't happy.
16:45But I was talking about diabetes type 2, not type 1, which is either way.
16:53Well, um...
16:54No, it's my father-in-law's diabetic.
16:56Anyway, so it is, that can be tricky.
16:59But, yeah, I think you can be mindful and I think I have been mindful over the years.
17:04Absolutely.
17:05Thanks, Abi.
17:06Um, Oliver, do you want to go?
17:08Hi, I'm Oliver.
17:09Hey, Oliver.
17:10Um, when I do comedy, I often play a character of Oliver.
17:14Yeah.
17:14That is both a true version of me and a heightened character.
17:18Having done this for a while, it sometimes becomes harder and harder to figure out where the character begins and
17:25the person ends.
17:26For you, who's been doing this for decades, what is the difference between David William Hughes in real life and
17:33the Hughes-y you play on stage?
17:35Yeah, that's a good question.
17:37Um, so yeah, I think my on-stage persona is a heightened version of my real persona.
17:43But it's funny how different people don't see that.
17:47And, for example, my son, who's just turned 16, he came to see a show this year for the first
17:53time, a full show.
17:54And he said, Dad, that was weird.
17:58I said, why?
17:59Because I've lived with him for 16 years.
18:01He said, I've never seen you so happy.
18:06Then I realised, maybe I should bring my heightened version of myself to my real life.
18:15You infamously brought a house on the block for just over $3 million without asking your wife.
18:21Yeah.
18:22I was an adult for a long time, by the way.
18:24Things can change.
18:28Despite occurring nearly a decade ago, it's still remembered by many.
18:32It is.
18:32How long did it take your wife to forgive you for that?
18:35She still hasn't.
18:36But, um, we still own it.
18:38Never moved into it.
18:39I want to move into it.
18:41And she goes, no, everyone will know where we live.
18:44And I said, honey, no one cares.
18:46So, but yeah, so she still hasn't forgiven me.
18:49The fact you then did it again and bought a house without telling her again.
18:53No, I bought the other one before that, but yes.
18:55Okay.
18:56The fact you did it twice.
18:57It was terrible.
18:58I know.
18:59I know.
19:00And these are first world problems.
19:01I get it.
19:02But again, I'm saying, I was on the dial.
19:04I grew up in a commission house.
19:05And so, yeah, so I haven't done it for a while.
19:08Which is good.
19:09That's good.
19:10I hope you don't do it again.
19:12But...
19:12Yeah, look, I mean, property is still a good investment in Australia if you can get...
19:15It's hard.
19:16It's so hard now.
19:17Maybe just ask your wife first.
19:20I know I should.
19:21Absolutely.
19:21I mean, yeah.
19:22You're right.
19:23Good point.
19:24Thanks, Oliver.
19:25Fletcher?
19:26Hello, Hughesy.
19:27Hello, Fletcher.
19:28I really hate cats.
19:30And I know how much you hate the F1 commentators.
19:33Is there anything else that makes you mad?
19:36Yeah, right.
19:36So you hate cats.
19:38Yeah.
19:39I think you can learn to love cats.
19:41No way.
19:42Nuh-uh.
19:42Nope.
19:43Nope.
19:43If you met Minka or Bambi or Marshmallow, our three cats, you would like two of them.
19:51Nope.
19:52Nope.
19:53Nope.
19:54Yeah, cats are fun.
19:55I hate kitty litter.
19:57Can I say that?
19:58Kitty litter I really hate.
19:59And luckily we've got a new dog, Ginger, who loves eating cat poo.
20:04So that's good for me.
20:05So...
20:07In one episode of I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, the other celebrities played the prank
20:12on you by putting stickers on your back and you didn't realise it until the end.
20:16Did you ever get a chance to, shall we say, prank them back?
20:20Did I get them back?
20:22Did I get them back?
20:22So...
20:22Oh, I can't remember now.
20:24I hope I did.
20:25Like, I mean obviously this show's going great guns and most of you will probably end up
20:30on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.
20:32No!
20:32No!
20:33No!
20:33No!
20:33No!
20:34No!
20:35No!
20:36No!
20:36If it happens...
20:36Just be warned, that show's hard.
20:39Alright?
20:40So...
20:40Imagine having no electricity for a month.
20:43I would go crazy.
20:44Yeah, I went crazy.
20:46You know?
20:46And I had one...
20:47We got one letter from our family in 6 weeks on that show.
20:51One letter.
20:52That was it.
20:53And I text my wife every two hours
20:55Basically for the last 23 years
20:57Also in her letter to me
20:58All she talked about was the cats
20:59And obviously we've already mentioned the cats
21:01And I love the cats
21:02But I've also got three children
21:04That I'm quite interested in
21:07Thank you Yuzi
21:09Thank you
21:09Savannah
21:13Good morning Dave
21:14My name is Savannah
21:17Welcome
21:18It's great to be here
21:19Appreciate the curtsy
21:20If other comedians are more famous than you
21:23Do you get jealous of them?
21:26Yes
21:26Yeah and I'm working on that
21:29That's a work in progress
21:31For example Will Anderson
21:33Or Hamish Blake
21:35Or Kitty Flanagan
21:37I don't like walking down the street
21:40With famous people
21:41Because I get scared they're going to get
21:43Asked for photos and I have to take the photo
21:47So I absolutely avoid it
21:51Have you made out with anyone famous?
21:55Have I made out with anyone famous?
21:56Yes
21:57Ooh kiss and tell yeah
22:00Look I've really only had two proper girlfriends in my life
22:05First couple of years when I was 24
22:07Got me through to probably 30
22:09Then I had a year of being single
22:11And I met my wife
22:12And we've been together 23 years
22:14So in that year
22:17I did have a couple of passions with some actresses
22:21One of the Logies I won't name
22:23But yep
22:24I remember going down the escalator of the Logies
22:28Pissing at someone from a TV show
22:30So yes is the answer
22:32But I won't name them in case they get annoyed
22:34But um
22:35Thanks Hughes
22:36You appreciate that
22:36Yeah
22:39Thanks
22:39You ate bull penis on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Outta Here
22:48What did bull penis taste like compared to chicken or steak?
22:52Well again
22:54Because I haven't eaten meat for
22:55I think I've been
22:56I've been hescetarian
22:57Which is just eat fish
22:59Yes
22:59The only meat for about 20 years
23:01But I've gone full vegan
23:03Probably close to 10 years now
23:05So I have not eaten
23:07Any meat for 10 years
23:09And I tell you
23:09A bull penis was a
23:11That's jumping into the deep end
23:13Actually it was a bull's penis
23:16Anyway
23:16It was an animal that starts with B
23:18And it was its penis
23:20They're very chewy
23:22So yeah
23:23You need to have a lot of tomato sauce with you
23:25And I didn't
23:27If you want to know what it's like
23:28You know
23:29Grab your garden hose
23:30Cut off about 6 inches
23:33And try to eat it
23:35You know
23:36The annoying thing is
23:36I got kicked out straight away
23:38After I'd eaten it
23:40Because I ate it to stay on the show
23:42And I still got kicked out
23:43I mean
23:44I had 3 inches of penis in my mouth
23:46When I got kicked out
23:47Which is
23:51Anastasia
23:52Yes
23:52Alright
23:53Hello Dave
23:55I'm Anastasia
23:56Lovely to meet you
23:56You too
23:57If you were a contestant on The Masked Singer
23:59What would your identity be
24:01And what song would you sing
24:03I think my identity would be
24:05An air fried chip
24:07Eh
24:08Yeah
24:09And I would sing
24:11I'd probably sing True Blue
24:13From John Williamson
24:14Hey True Blue
24:16And I'd say I would get kicked off straight away
24:18Because people would know who I was
24:20And I would be the worst singer the show's ever had
24:23Because I'm tone deaf
24:25I don't know what it is
24:26But just a terrible singer
24:28Thank you
24:29Thomas
24:32Hello Hussey
24:33With your comedy
24:34You would use your family
24:36For your routines
24:38Have you ever gotten into trouble
24:40When you got home?
24:42Yeah I have
24:42Yeah
24:43I remember once I talked about
24:45Buying shoes
24:46Because the shoe salesman
24:49Was an attractive woman
24:50And then I did that on radio
24:52In my early radio career
24:53And my girlfriend at the time
24:54I came home to her
24:55Thinking she'd be happier
24:57About my new radio show
24:58And as I opened the door
25:00And she looked down at my new shoes
25:01And just slammed the door
25:02To find somewhere else to live
25:05So
25:07Sometimes you've got to be careful
25:08I'm Finn
25:09Hi Dave
25:10I'm Finn
25:11Big Finn
25:12Thank you
25:12I'm pumped up
25:14We're pumped up
25:15We're pumped up
25:15Do you ever worry about
25:17Marketing
25:19Larrikinism
25:19And bogan culture
25:21When you're actually
25:22Clean living
25:22And into meditation
25:23Yeah look
25:25I don't worry about it
25:26But I am a bit of a contradiction
25:28And people
25:29I haven't had a drink
25:30Since 1992
25:32Before I started comedy actually
25:33I was a
25:34Big
25:35User of alcohol
25:36As a young person
25:37And it would always
25:38Get me in trouble
25:38So
25:39And I was
25:40It wasn't making me happy
25:41So I
25:42Made a decision
25:43Just before I turned 22
25:44To stop drinking alcohol
25:46And all drugs
25:47Gave up all drugs
25:48And
25:49Yeah
25:49But people look at me now
25:51And still think
25:52I'm off my nut
25:52So
25:53And people always think
25:55I've got a hangover
25:55I look like I've got a hangover
25:56The whole time
25:57Often people go
25:58You look terrible
25:59You must have had a big night
26:00Nah
26:00I've had nine hours sleep
26:01I'm fine
26:02So
26:02You should call my son though
26:04Thanks mate
26:05Appreciate it
26:06Thanks Finn
26:06Dale
26:08Hello Husey
26:09Hey mate
26:10You've been open
26:11That quitting alcohol
26:12In your 20s
26:13Was only half the story
26:14And what's been harder
26:15Is your obsession
26:16With work
26:16Approval
26:17And being everywhere
26:18What specific boundaries
26:19Have you set
26:20To stop work
26:21Becoming the new addiction
26:22Yeah
26:22Yeah
26:22It's a good question
26:23And my wife
26:24Thinks I'm addicted to work
26:26Look
26:26You've got to try
26:27To get a balance right
26:28My father used to say
26:29Family is the most important thing
26:30And I'd go
26:31Yeah whatever dad
26:32I'm going to be a star
26:33And
26:34But I do realise
26:36What he's saying now
26:36It took me a long time
26:37To realise
26:38That he was right
26:39So yeah
26:39Doing the project
26:40Back in the day
26:41When I started that TV show
26:43With everyone else
26:44I was working every night
26:46Doing that
26:47I was doing breakfast radio
26:48As well in Melbourne
26:49So I was gone
26:50Both ends of the day
26:51And we had three kids
26:52In that time
26:53So
26:53Yeah
26:54I wasn't there that much
26:55So I should have been there more
26:57But I was too worried
26:58About my own ego
26:59And I have since realised
27:02That doesn't matter
27:03But
27:04I do love comedy though
27:06So and that was my first love
27:07I loved comedy
27:08Long before my children were born
27:10And they need to know that
27:12So
27:14Awesome
27:14Thank you for answering that
27:15Thank you
27:16Daniel
27:18G'day mate
27:18How you going?
27:19Yeah good bro
27:21My name's Daniel
27:22Hey Dan
27:23To stop drinking
27:24Is very difficult for most people
27:26How did you manage this
27:28And what
27:28What was your motivation?
27:31Look I came from a long line of drinkers
27:33So I grew up with my dad
27:35Drinking too much
27:36Which can be really stressful for kids
27:39And I saw myself doing the same thing
27:41I was
27:41Always got too drunk
27:43Which would
27:44I'd sometimes wake up in a police cell
27:47I wasn't violent
27:48Not a violent person
27:49But I would
27:50Be locked up for my own safety really
27:52Because I was asleep on the road or something
27:54And I could see my future
27:55Laying ahead of me
27:57Yeah
27:57So I just decided
27:58At the age of 21
27:59I said I'm not going to drink anymore
28:00And I just
28:01I just made a decision
28:02Yeah
28:03If you realise that alcohol
28:04Is terrible for you
28:06And you fully accept it
28:07But then you just
28:08You go
28:09I fully accept it
28:10And so then it's just gone
28:11So it hasn't
28:12It wasn't that hard actually
28:13So what was the relationship
28:14With your father like?
28:16Well again
28:17He had a lot of wisdom
28:18There's no doubt
28:19You know
28:19About family being the most important thing
28:21And working hard
28:22And I was a lazy teenager
28:24He would drag out of bed
28:25So it was
28:26Yeah
28:26And his drinking was an issue
28:28There's no doubt
28:28So yeah
28:29We had some tough times
28:32But you know
28:33In hindsight
28:34There was
28:35You know
28:35He wanted the best for me
28:37You know
28:38He didn't
28:38He kept drinking
28:40Which he shouldn't have
28:41In my opinion
28:42I think he would have had a better life
28:43If he had not drank
28:44Yeah
28:45There was
28:45I mean a lot of people
28:46Have trouble with their dads
28:47A lot of blokes
28:47Have trouble with their dads
28:48And I get it
28:49So
28:49I'm trying not to do that
28:50With my own son
28:51Yeah
28:52Right
28:52Thanks mate
28:53I appreciate it
28:54Thank you
28:54Thank you
28:55Abby
28:55Yep
28:58You have talked about
28:59How important your mum was
29:01In your upbringing
29:02And how she helped you kick your addictions
29:05Can you tell us a story
29:07About your mum
29:08That shaped who you are
29:12Yeah
29:12Yeah
29:13If I can
29:13I mean emotional
29:14My mum
29:16She grew up in an orphanage
29:18So
29:18She didn't really have any parents
29:20So
29:22But she never complained about that
29:24Or even wanted me to mention it
29:26So
29:27Yeah
29:27She was a beautiful woman
29:28Who was strong
29:30And
29:31Yeah
29:31She always
29:34She was my biggest supporter
29:35So
29:37Yeah
29:38So
29:38Thank you
29:39So yeah
29:40So mum was
29:42Saw that I was a smart kid
29:43From
29:44Yeah
29:44Very early on
29:45So
29:45She
29:47Yeah
29:47She
29:48Sort of
29:49Could see that I would
29:51That I had some
29:53You know
29:53Potential I suppose
29:54So
29:55And supported me all the way along
29:57So yeah
29:58So
29:58Yeah
29:59Mum was always
30:00On my side
30:02She died a couple of years ago
30:03So
30:04Yeah
30:05She was a great person
30:06Well my mum means the world to me
30:09And she's my biggest advocate
30:10Good
30:11Good
30:12Evie
30:15Hi I'm Evie
30:17Hey Evie
30:18Um
30:18The main thing I want to do
30:21Is work in the creative industry
30:23And I find
30:24I find it hard to imagine anything else
30:27If comedy hadn't worked out for you
30:29What else would you be doing?
30:31Good question
30:32So
30:32Yeah I really
30:34Burnt my bridges
30:35I start
30:36My first degree was
30:38Information technology
30:39In 1989
30:40If anyone knows the history of the internet
30:42Really started in 1990
30:44I could be Bill Gates right now
30:45So
30:46I quit after six weeks
30:47Because I just couldn't focus
30:49So
30:50And then I did
30:50Business
30:51Quit that as well
30:52After two years
30:53And then I
30:54I got sacked from so many jobs
30:56I got sacked as a dishwasher
30:57Oh
30:58And
30:59You might think
30:59Because you were lazy
31:00No I was trying hard
31:02And when you get sacked as a dishwasher
31:04And you're trying really hard
31:05You think
31:07My employment opportunities
31:08Are going to be limited
31:10But you know
31:11I turned that into jokes
31:12And
31:13And
31:13These
31:13So things
31:14Bad things that happened to me
31:16Humiliating things
31:17Became comedy for me
31:18So
31:19And
31:20Yeah
31:20The good thing about social media now
31:22Is that
31:23You can be
31:23You're a creator
31:24Just by having an Instagram account
31:26Or a TikTok account
31:27And you create
31:28Your own work
31:28Your own art
31:29Or your own
31:30You can do whatever you like
31:31And maybe you don't get paid for it
31:33When maybe
31:34You know
31:34Your account gets discovered
31:36After you're dead
31:37It could be you
31:38You never know
31:39Just keep creating art
31:42Thanks Evie
31:43Let's give Andrew a turn
31:45Off you go
31:46Hello Dave
31:47I'm Andrew
31:48Hi Andrew
31:50Did your meeting
31:51With the Dalai Lama
31:52Influence the way you see
31:54Meditation and mindfulness
31:55It did
31:57I did meet with a Dalai Lama
31:58While I was on the project
31:59Back in the day
32:00Um
32:01And
32:02He's someone who
32:03People see as being
32:04A wise soul
32:06And he just giggled
32:07The whole time
32:09He looked at me
32:10And said
32:10I like you
32:11And he said
32:11Because you've got crazy eyes
32:13And I appreciate that
32:15So
32:15And I actually got him to
32:17I said
32:18Can you bless my football
32:19My AFL team Carlton
32:21And he said
32:22I can
32:22But it won't make any difference
32:24And he was right
32:25So
32:25But he did
32:27So yeah
32:27Oh that's really good
32:28Yeah it was great
32:29And again
32:30Someone
32:30Giggle
32:31Giggle at life
32:32And that's what he does
32:33So yeah
32:34And that's what I think
32:34We all should do
32:35As much as we can
32:37Dave Hughes
32:37It's been an honour
32:38To interview you today
32:39I appreciate that
32:40Thank you so much
32:41Thank you
32:41James
32:43Hi Dave
32:44I'm James
32:45Hi James
32:47You are known
32:48For poking fun at yourself
32:49What's something about yourself
32:52Other than your family of course
32:54That you are secretly proud of?
32:56Um
33:01I would
33:02Probably something
33:03I would try to avoid
33:04Actually
33:04Because
33:05It will lead to sorrow
33:07Basically
33:08So
33:08It's like
33:09You know
33:11I was proud
33:12Of having
33:13A successful radio career
33:14And then like
33:15I got sacked
33:16From my last radio job
33:17So it's like
33:17That's
33:18That pride is
33:19Something that
33:20You know
33:21Ends up
33:21Making you feel miserable
33:23But also
33:24Pride means
33:24You're thinking
33:25About yourself
33:25And I read
33:26This study recently
33:29It said that
33:30The happiest people
33:31In the world
33:31Are the people
33:32Who think about
33:32Themselves the least
33:34Just imagine
33:35You didn't
33:35You didn't
33:36Think about yourself
33:36For a second
33:37And you just
33:38Looked around
33:39You go
33:39Oh my god
33:40This is amazing
33:42What is this?
33:43What are we doing here?
33:44What is life?
33:45And it was like
33:46It would be
33:47It's awesome
33:49Well those are
33:49Very wise words
33:51But I do think
33:51You have a lot
33:52To be proud of
33:53So thank you
33:53Thank you
33:54Thank you
33:55Oh is it?
33:56Okay
33:58I speak for everyone here
34:00We all have big dreams
34:02And
34:04Not all of us
34:05Will succeed
34:07What advice
34:08Would you give
34:08To those of us
34:09Who don't make it?
34:11Thank you
34:11I'd say
34:13There is no making it
34:14There is no making it
34:15The new world order
34:17Which is
34:19Taking the power
34:20I mean
34:20It's
34:21Taking the power away
34:23I've done TV
34:24And radio
34:24In this country
34:25For many years
34:25And
34:26But having a job
34:28On radio
34:29And TV
34:29Involves
34:30Executives
34:32Saying that
34:33You're on
35:02But the podcasting
35:03Salas
35:06Salas
35:07Salas
35:07I'm Salas
35:08Hey mate
35:09How much money
35:10Would it take for you
35:11To permanently walk away
35:12From comedy?
35:14None
35:15I would never walk away
35:16From comedy
35:16For me
35:17The money
35:18Is very secondary
35:19It's not
35:20It didn't used to be
35:22Obviously
35:22I'd want to make a living
35:23As a comedian
35:24But
35:26It's the comedy itself
35:27Is the
35:27It's the
35:28Joy of laughter
35:31The joy of creating
35:32Laughter
35:34Is everything to me
35:35Hand on heart
35:36Give me
35:36Ten billion dollars
35:38I would say no
35:39If I had to stop comedy
35:40In my last day
35:42Of life
35:42I'll be lying
35:43In probably a hospital room
35:44Or hopefully
35:44In my bedroom
35:46At home
35:46Whatever
35:46Wherever I am
35:48I'll know
35:49I'm about to die
35:50And I'll grab my phone
35:51So I've got one more
35:52Funny bit to do
35:53Laughter
35:56Because everything
35:57That goes wrong
35:57In my life
35:58Is where I get
35:58My best material
35:59So
35:59On my dying day
36:01That's a good day
36:02For material
36:03Laughter
36:05Pat
36:07Hello Husey
36:08I'm Pat
36:08Nice to meet you
36:10You too
36:11So
36:11You have made a living
36:13Out of solving
36:13Other people's problems
36:14Would this make you
36:16A good world leader
36:17Yeah look
36:17Um
36:19Yeah I don't have
36:20All the answers
36:20I'm used to getting
36:21Criticised
36:22So that would
36:22That would get me
36:23Into politics
36:24I would be able
36:25To survive probably
36:26With my attitude
36:27Of dealing with
36:29Criticism
36:29Dave Hughes for PM
36:30Dave Hughes for PM
36:32Yeah I don't
36:32Look
36:32It's um
36:33Yeah I don't think
36:34I've never won a Logie
36:35So it's pretty hard
36:36For me to
36:38I don't think
36:38I'd get enough votes
36:39To be honest
36:40Actually there was one
36:41My son
36:42That was a funny thing
36:43My son
36:43Um
36:43A little while back
36:45Um
36:45We were in the car
36:46And he got a text message
36:48And he started laughing
36:49Really hard
36:50And I'm like
36:50What is it
36:51He said
36:52My mate sent me a message
36:53There's a
36:54TikTok had done a poll
36:55About the
36:56Apparently about the
36:57Five Australian men
36:58With the lowest auras
36:59Which I didn't even know
37:00What that meant
37:01At the time
37:02For people who don't know
37:03Having a low aura
37:04Is bad
37:05It means you're uncool
37:07And I'm like
37:09What's that got to do
37:10With me
37:11He said
37:12You're on the list
37:12I'm like
37:13What
37:14I said
37:14That's confronting
37:16I said
37:17He said
37:18Don't worry
37:18You're not number one
37:19I said
37:20Where am I
37:21He said
37:21Number two
37:24Yeah exactly
37:25Wait then
37:26Who is number one
37:26Well I said
37:28Who's number one
37:28He said
37:29Peter Dutton
37:29So um
37:33So
37:33What I'm saying
37:35Is I don't think
37:36I should go into politics
37:37Well
37:39At least in politics
37:40You'd have more people
37:41Laughing at you than ever
37:42Well you'd hope so
37:43Thank you
37:44Thank you Pat
37:45So thank you for the interview
37:47Now uh
37:47Before we go
37:48We have a little
37:49Game we'd like to play
37:50With you
37:50So
37:50You had this show
37:52Husey
37:52We have a problem
37:53So
37:54You must be very good
37:55At solving problems
37:57I try
37:57And uh
37:58We actually have some problems
38:00Uh
38:00Any chance you could
38:01Help us with them
38:02I
38:03Look
38:03Yes
38:04There is
38:04There is a chance
38:05I'd love to help you
38:06With the problem
38:06I'll go first
38:07I can't stop farting
38:10Which is very embarrassing
38:11How should I stop it
38:13From happening
38:13Look I
38:14Look I also have that problem
38:16Better an empty house
38:17Than a bad tenant
38:18So that's what they say
38:19So
38:20So um
38:22My wife is not happy
38:23With it
38:24She
38:24I
38:25Our house
38:25That we built
38:26We should have put
38:27More walls in
38:28I can be at one corner
38:30Of the house
38:30And she's at the other
38:31Corner
38:31Upstairs
38:32Like she's like
38:3350 metres from me
38:35And I fart
38:36And she goes
38:36Hurt it
38:37I'm like
38:39It's not my fault
38:40This house has
38:41Terrible acoustics
38:42We should have put
38:43In more walls
38:44Just concrete floors
38:46About you need carpet
38:47For your farting
38:49Hoosie I have a problem
38:51My mum has the best fashion
38:53In her wardrobe
38:53And I keep seeing her clothes
38:56But then she takes them back
38:59How can I stay up there
39:00Without her knowing
39:30I think you're
39:31Come on mum
39:31Oh my god that was so bad
39:33I'm sorry mum
39:33I didn't mean to tell you
39:34I think we've helped
39:36Both of you there
39:39Hoosie I have a problem
39:41I mistakenly told my mum
39:42My vegan friends
39:43Were vegetarian
39:44Not vegan
39:45And she cooked a dinner
39:46With eggs and honey in it
39:47Do I tell them
39:49Or do I take that secret
39:50To my grave
39:51I think
39:51Look as a vegan
39:53You take it to your grave
39:54And um
39:55Because I'm sure
39:56They enjoyed that food
40:01Every now and again
40:02I just don't want to know
40:03You know
40:03I don't want to know
40:05Eggs are great
40:05I miss eggs
40:06Hoosie
40:07I have a problem
40:09People are always
40:11Walking into me
40:12And my wheelchair
40:13While looking at
40:14Their mobile phones
40:15When they're walking
40:16Down the street
40:17And they think
40:18It's my fault
40:19What should I do
40:20Um
40:23Could you
40:23Electrify your
40:25Like
40:25Well I do have
40:26I know it's electric
40:28It's got electric
40:28Can you put some
40:29Some electric fence
40:30Around it
40:31Well I do have
40:32A horn
40:33Which goes
40:34I love that
40:35That sounds like
40:36They're very oblivious
40:38I would say
40:38Run them over
40:39Also
40:41Don't worry
40:42I've run
40:42Many people
40:43Speak over
40:43And I think
40:45People are crazy
40:47Like they don't care
40:48No
40:48Because they're hooked
40:49On their phone
40:49Alright
40:50Thanks so much
40:51For coming mate
