00:11More details are emerging this afternoon about the explosive device found outside the William J. Lowe
00:17Federal Building in downtown. The North Texas Bomb Squad responded to the scene earlier today
00:23and successfully diffused what they are calling an improvised explosive device.
00:32Now, within the past hour, a spokesperson for the FBI has informed us that a suspect is in custody in
00:38connection with this case.
00:40Guys, we need to move them back.
00:47His name is Titus Hernandez, a 22-year-old man who most recently worked as a courier in the area.
01:13Hey, what's up, Sarge?
01:14Hey!
01:16And it is not Sarge whose days are over.
01:21Right, right, right. Look, I just thought I'd drop by during lunch to pick it up, so you got it
01:26working?
01:26Oh, yeah. Slight new.
01:29Yeah. Just soldered a couple of wires and then, boom, came back to life. And those speakers, those speakers are
01:34great.
01:34Really? Man, I ain't heard a sign of this thing since I was a kid, man.
01:38Me and my dad used to hoop every day with this thing, filming. That's why I never wanted to throw
01:42it out.
01:42Yeah, I really didn't have that, but, you know, I got to fix a lot of stuff.
01:46You want to hear it?
01:46Yeah, let's do it.
01:47All right.
01:51You are going to love this.
01:55No, no, no, no, no.
01:58No, no, no. I was just working this morning.
02:01It was working great.
02:06Oh, come on.
02:08I'm sorry.
02:09My boy Anthony around there?
02:11Oh, no, no.
02:12I forgot to tell you, we got that scholarship.
02:14For real?
02:15Yeah, we just took him to school a couple of weeks ago.
02:17You know, he's doing great.
02:18That's awesome, man.
02:19So I'm going to say a congrats.
02:20I will.
02:21Well, look, man, I'm going to let you get back to looking at that, man.
02:24Just shoot me a text when it's ready.
02:25I will. And I will fix it.
02:26All right.
02:26All right.
02:27All right.
02:29All right.
02:29Take care, man.
02:30Hey, you stay safe.
02:32Always.
02:33See you, boss.
02:43Details on how agents were able to quickly identify the suspect
02:46and tie him to the case have not been revealed.
02:49But we should learn more once the affidavit is unseen.
03:12It's not working.
03:14I don't get it.
03:15I could do this in my sleep when I was younger.
03:18Don't beat yourself up.
03:20It happens to a lot of men your age.
03:22That's not funny.
03:23Well, don't let it ruin your day.
03:25I don't want you stomping around mad over a radio.
03:28I was mad.
03:28I'm not mad.
03:29Nobody is mad.
03:30I'm the furthest thing from being mad right now.
03:33Is this for a paying customer or another favor?
03:36Because...
03:37There will be plenty of paying customers once the website's done.
03:41That's how the business grows.
03:43You complete a website and then you get lots of customers and there are a lot of checks.
03:48Uh-huh.
03:50Well, the only checks I've seen lately are from Aunt Martha's Trust for your mom.
03:54They keep sending them to our house by mistake.
03:57Yeah, I know.
03:58I need to go see her.
03:59I'll bring them with me.
04:02How much are they?
04:03I don't open them.
04:05Why not?
04:06I'm her son.
04:07I mean, we're gonna be managing her stuff soon.
04:12It's...
04:12Oh, trouble just taking a little peek.
04:15You can have that on your conscience if you want, but I won't do it.
04:18And maybe take a break from the radio to work on something else.
04:24Like your website?
04:30I have a meeting this afternoon.
04:32And I gotta fix a record player.
04:34But I'll work on the website.
04:43It is never a good sign when the FBI is calling you.
04:48Yeah, well, we have a knack for sniffing out troublemakers.
04:52Civilian life still treating you well?
04:54Yeah, it's all good.
04:56I, um...
04:57Business is rocking.
04:59Just a few start-up hiccups.
05:01How about you?
05:02I'm really busy.
05:04I'm not really sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, considering what I do.
05:09I still have some openings, you know, if you ever change your mind.
05:12Did you hear about that Federal Building backpack bomber?
05:15Yeah, yeah.
05:15I saw the stuff on the news.
05:17Yeah, well, they got me working the suspect's profile.
05:19And guess where he grew up?
05:22Good ol' East Bank.
05:24Just reaching out to see if you've ever had a run-in with him or anything, or...
05:27If, uh, you can tell me anything, because he doesn't have a record, he's clean as a whistle.
05:32Remind me of his name?
05:34Titus Hernandez.
05:36Moved here about four years ago, dropped out of community college after a semester,
05:39and he's been bouncing between jobs ever since.
05:42I went to high school with an Isaac Hernandez, who's a Hispanic kid, new in town.
05:50Just, uh, we were rough on him.
05:53I mean, it could be his kid, a relative.
05:55What do you got on him?
06:00It's not public yet.
06:02But it's solid.
06:04Direct tie from the bomb to the suspect.
06:07I mean, it was almost like he wanted to get caught.
06:10Hmm. Interesting.
06:11Tell you what.
06:12I'll let you know what I find on the relatives,
06:14and if you happen to run into your old classmate or think of anything, hit me up, okay?
06:19Yeah, I'll do it.
06:21All right. Take care, man.
06:48I don't know, Travis.
06:50That is a pretty tight grouping.
06:52Are your eyes open?
06:53I didn't know we were shooting blind.
06:55I don't know, Travis.
06:55What are you doing today?
06:56Just admit that you're rusty and about to lose.
06:59Oh, I'm rusty?
07:00I bet you don't even get to carry a gun at that new job.
07:03Trauma counselors don't need guns.
07:05Does an electronic repairman carry a gun?
07:08Vintage electronic restoration specialist.
07:12Okay.
07:15And, I mean, you feel like that's where God sent you after you resigned?
07:20He gave me a passion for it.
07:22Fixed things, you know, I'm pretty good at it.
07:25It's gotta be from him, right?
07:27I don't know.
07:28I mean, you're a people person.
07:30It's where you're best.
07:31Looking people in the eye and getting down to the truth.
07:35I mean, like, for me, what I do,
07:37I'm investing in people who are going through
07:38probably the worst situation of their entire lives,
07:41and it's rewarding and fulfilling,
07:43and I know that it's what I was meant to do
07:46after everything I've been through, so...
07:51It's a great place to be.
07:54I'm happy for you.
07:57Yeah.
08:23Oh, yeah. I am a little rusty.
08:26That's ridiculous.
08:29That's insane.
08:45Gary?
08:49I could use some help.
09:04I could use some help.
09:15Gary?
09:32Hey, come take a look.
09:34Did you hear me calling for you?
09:36You scared me.
09:37I'm sorry.
09:38I'm just focused.
09:39Come here.
09:45Pretty good, huh?
09:47I don't know if good is the right...
09:50I wouldn't call it great, but, you know,
09:53I was talking to Chris today,
09:54and she was telling me about how her new job is like a calling.
09:57It just inspired me.
09:59You know, if this is what God's given me,
10:01then I need to treat it like I'm working for Him.
10:04So I hunker down, finish the site.
10:06You know, once it starts hitting,
10:08you know, I could have ten jobs by Monday,
10:10you know, maybe a hundred.
10:11Who knows?
10:12I'm just worried that you aren't prepared
10:14to handle a hundred orders just yet,
10:16from our garage.
10:18No, no.
10:19This is just a start.
10:20I mean, once I start making money,
10:21you know, I'll hire employees,
10:23I'll get a shop.
10:24You could be my accountant.
10:27Or a tight little skirt.
10:28Hey, let's just take this one step at a time.
10:31A couple of orders would be nice
10:33before starting a headquarters.
10:36Is the site live?
10:38Oh yeah, it's live.
10:40But they monitor bandwidth,
10:41and that costs money, so...
10:43I don't want it to go viral at first.
10:45Not till I can afford it.
10:47So don't pray for that just yet.
10:50I'm proud of you for finishing your website.
10:54I'm gonna go put away the groceries.
11:01Couldn't have done it without you.
11:03About two?
11:06Mm.
11:06Hmm.
12:25All this stuff happened in the Titus and old GT from high school shows up.
12:30Well, you're here for a purpose.
12:33I can't imagine what you and your wife are going through right now.
12:38Yeah, well, I thought he was doing good, you know.
12:41Got a job in the city, got an apartment, got a roommate.
12:45Next thing you know, the FBI is banging down our door saying he tried to set up a bomb.
12:52Won't answer any of our questions.
12:53They start going through our stuff.
12:56And I'm telling you, that boy GT, all he knows is video games.
12:58He don't know how to build no bomb.
13:03Now we're trying to get a private investigator, a lawyer, or something.
13:08We can't afford any of that stuff.
13:12Like I hear, you're a cop, right?
13:14Isn't there something that you can do?
13:15I, uh, resigned from the force.
13:18I started a small business, you know, entrepreneur type thing.
13:22Oh, for reals?
13:25So, uh, why are you here then?
13:29I wanted to check on you, uh, back in the day, I'm not real proud of some of the things
13:36we said and did to you.
13:38And I just wanted to say that, you know, I'm...
13:41No, no, no, no, no, that's okay.
13:44We were kids a long time ago.
13:47All is forget and forgotten.
13:51Look, if we can do anything to help you, you and your wife...
13:53Do you know anybody?
13:55Anybody that I can call to help clear my boy's name, because I'm telling you, I don't know what they're
13:59going off of.
14:00He didn't do it.
14:02He's being framed or wrongfully accused or whatever it is you want to call it.
14:06Wait a minute.
14:07Um, they said it was assembled in a backpack.
14:12Does your boy have a backpack?
14:14What do you mean, a backpack?
14:15Where'd you hear that?
14:16The FBI.
14:17That's what they said.
14:18No, no, no, no, no.
14:19Hold on just a minute.
14:20I've been listening and watching everything they've been saying about it.
14:22They never said anything about a backpack.
14:23No, I'm sure I heard it.
14:31Titus, he's had that same old grungy backpack he's had for years, you know?
14:34It's got stickers and patches all over from all those video games that he plays.
14:38Like, it looks a lot like those soldier patches.
14:41Okay.
14:43He left it on the bus a couple of weeks ago.
14:45Wallet, cash, keys, all of that were in it.
14:48Called us asking how to get a driver's license and bump some cash and all of that.
14:53Did he file a police report?
14:55For a lost backpack?
14:56No, no, no, no.
14:57He didn't think anything was stolen or anything.
15:02Hey, Long.
15:03Send me the photo of the backpack from the bomb.
15:05What do you mean?
15:06I mean, we haven't publicly released the manner in which the guy...
15:09Don't give me that.
15:10Look, last time we talked, you said backpack.
15:12So just send it to me.
15:14I can't do that.
15:15What do you mean you can't?
15:18Look, just slip the phone in your back pocket.
15:20It accidentally butt-dials me the photo.
15:22Now, you didn't do anything wrong, and I won't even look at it.
15:25For very long.
15:27That's not how texting works, Gary.
15:28You ask me to help you.
15:30All right?
15:31Just send it.
15:42You ask me to help you.
16:07You know, it's never a good sign when a man hides his screen just when his wife enters the room.
16:14I was just looking at the latest on the Federal Building bomb stuff.
16:18Oh.
16:19So you're cheating on your repair work.
16:22I'm not cheating.
16:24I'm taking a brain break.
16:26I can't seem to fix this record player or the radio, apparently.
16:34Can we have a heart-to-heart?
16:38Sure.
16:43I'm not feeling very good about Gary's repairs.
16:48I know you love tinkering with these things, but our finances can't handle the dip we've been going through much
16:53longer, and I'm not sure that these electronics are your strength.
16:59Becky, I've always been good at fixing stuff.
17:02Yeah, I'm a little rusty, but once I get my soldering hand back and, you know, a supply chain and
17:09some of these shops...
17:10You're not any good at fixing this junk!
17:20I'm sorry.
17:23Somebody had to tell you.
17:27What-what am I supposed to do, huh?
17:32This is what God's given me.
17:35I was a cop, and before that, I tinkered with electronics.
17:40I'm terrible at this-this modern, high-tech stuff.
17:43I didn't go to college.
17:46So what am I supposed to do, Pat?
17:50Go back to being a detective somewhere else?
17:53I can't.
17:56God closed that door in my heart, and...
17:59it's not my place to open it.
18:03If the door is closed...
18:06then what was on that screen?
18:11Did God close the door?
18:13Or did you?
18:17I can't go back. I can't.
18:20Maybe it's not about going back...
18:25but going forward instead.
18:28What's that even mean?
18:32You're a smart guy.
18:35You'll figure this out.
18:40It's what you do.
18:42You solve things.
18:54It's what you do.
18:55Now, if...
19:20Hey, what's up?
19:21So should I come downtown, teach your boys
19:25how to conduct a proper investigation?
19:28What do you mean by that?
19:30Well, you should be more observant.
19:32Look around.
19:36You got the wrong guy.
19:40I'm listening.
19:41Backpack was lost, possibly stolen,
19:44three weeks before the incident happened.
19:47And I know you're gonna say it's hearsay,
19:48but I got canceled debit cards, reissued driver's license,
19:52bus receipts that proved that he lost it.
19:53So if it were me and I was looking for the real bomb maker,
19:56I'd be looking at the bus camera footage
19:59on Route 9 between the 20th and the 22nd.
20:04That's very good, Mr. Travis.
20:06Or should I call you Detective Travis again?
20:08Better yet, Gary Travis, PI.
20:10It's just Travis. You want this?
20:13We already figured it out.
20:15You did?
20:17We picked up the wrong guy.
20:19The stolen backpack was used to throw us off, apparently.
20:22Now the Bureau has a whole mess to clean up when they let him out.
20:25We got our own Richard Jewell dilemma here.
20:27Oh, you mean the guy's life you wrecked because he was wrongfully accused?
20:32Unfortunately.
20:33Yeah, but that's pretty impressive work there for a former law enforcement officer.
20:37I mean, it took a team of people across multiple floors up there
20:41to figure out what one old-school cop did in about a day.
20:44Our offer still stands.
20:46We could always put in a good word for you,
20:49start the interview process, the background check.
20:51I appreciate it, you guys, but I am all in on my new business.
20:55Well, can't say I blame him for wanting to stay out of it.
21:00But you're gifted, Gary.
21:02I mean, you're really good at what you do.
21:04And we didn't have the dates or the bus scheduled yet, so thank you.
21:09Yep.
21:10Do you want to grab coffee while you're in town?
21:13Yeah, I could do that. But he's paying.
21:16Of course I am.
21:18You know, you could have just emailed those things to us
21:21instead of driving all the way out here.
21:23Not like you say, buddy. I'm old school.
21:26Technology, you know.
21:28Do you have a computer at home?
21:30Yes, I have a computer.
21:31Is it a dial-up?
21:39That's what it's all about, gentlemen.
21:42Repentance.
21:43It's a change in your mind that causes a change in your actions.
21:51You're going the wrong way, and by the grace of God, you start going the right way.
21:59But simply just thinking about it in your mind or feeling it in your heart, it's not enough.
22:07If the repentance is real, there'll be action that searches evidence.
22:16A change that makes things more right.
22:23And on the topic of change, I shared this with our pastor, but this will be the last week of
22:30me leading the group.
22:34As some of you know, God has led me into a new line of work, and for a season, I'll
22:38need to focus all my energies on that.
22:41But, you know, if you have any old electronics that need some new life breathed into them, I'm your guy.
22:52You're dismissed.
22:57Well, it's good to see you.
23:01Take care.
23:04Appreciate everything you've done with the group.
23:06Absolutely.
23:07Do you want to get some lunch tomorrow?
23:08Yeah, I'd love to.
23:10I'm having lunch with my mom and my daughter.
23:12But we'll do it soon.
23:13All right, buddy.
23:13Take care.
23:15Hey, if, uh, you find that CB radio, bring it to me.
23:21What was all that about in there?
23:22Yeah.
23:23You couldn't give us a warning?
23:25Trust me, it was a hard decision, but I had to do it.
23:27And this is what God wants?
23:29Yeah, I think so.
23:31I mean, can we really know for sure?
23:33I think we can be very sure.
23:35You saw how many guys we had tonight.
23:37I mean, that's on your watch.
23:40We started with five guys at your house, and now, look how it's grown.
23:45Man, you know we're behind you.
23:47If this new business is God's will for your life, but the brother to brother?
23:52I just think he's got bigger plans than that for you.
23:55Look, I hear you, but I've got to make a living, got to provide for my family.
24:00Hey, you were the one challenging us with the parable of the talents.
24:04Like, what, three weeks ago?
24:06Taking what we've been given and using it for him.
24:09Ask any guy in this group, and they'll agree.
24:14You have a gift.
24:17And what's that?
24:21You're good with people.
24:23You understand them.
24:25Know how to figure out what's happening in their lives.
24:27Look, I just don't know that it's hard for me to see.
24:30Look how you've helped both of our families.
24:33Huh?
24:35There's your evidence, detective.
24:39Hey, we love you, man.
24:41We've got to check you, right?
24:42Yeah.
24:43Just like you do for us, right?
24:46Yeah.
24:47And besides, to see a man with the talent of a race car driver, and he's going to use that
24:52talent to push shopping carts, you've got to ask yourself, is this God's plan?
24:57It's not an easy thing for us to say, but would we be real friends if we didn't?
25:03Look, I hear you both.
25:05I'll keep my eyes open in case I'm missing something, and I will pray about it.
25:11And if you hear something, you'll take action.
25:16You are listening, huh?
25:17For once.
25:20Look, anything changes, you let us know about it, alright?
25:22Alright.
25:24Alright, love you guys.
25:39And on Tuesdays we play dominoes.
25:42But nobody believes me when I tell them I learned to play the game when I was in the big
25:47house.
25:49They all say, you're just too sweet of a little old lady to have ever been there.
25:54I let them say whatever they want to.
25:57And then I beat them.
25:59Over and over.
26:01Mom, you're not putting money on those games, are you?
26:04Of course not.
26:05I wouldn't even think of it.
26:06Mmm.
26:07Oh, Gary.
26:09Speaking of money,
26:12there's checks from the trust.
26:13They're coming to my house and not yours.
26:15I can put these with the rest of her mail.
26:16She likes to read them, sometimes over and over.
26:20Uh, no.
26:23Those are supposed to go to your house.
26:25For your company.
26:27No, Mom, these are from Aunt Martha's Trust.
26:29They're yours.
26:29I know exactly what they are.
26:31I'm the one that called them and told them to send a portion of that money to your house.
26:36Well, it's to get you started with your electrics company.
26:41And that's where they're going.
26:42No. No, they're not.
26:44No, not another word.
26:46Do you hear me?
26:50Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna visit the little girl's room.
26:55Do you want me to come help you?
26:56Help?
26:59Honey, the day I can't use the bathroom by myself is the day y'all could put me in a
27:04box.
27:11How much are those checks?
27:12I don't know. I haven't opened them.
27:14I'll just put them in a folder until she comes asking for them again.
27:19How's she doing?
27:21Comes and goes. This morning she was asking if we were having lunch with Roger.
27:25Roger this, Roger that.
27:28Hmm. Roger.
27:30See you one of the guys at the center?
27:32Not that I know of.
27:42Once a cop, always a cop.
27:44Well, habits are hard to break when your brain's been on duty for 18 years.
27:49Are you enjoying the new work?
27:52I'm trying to enjoy it.
27:56My friend Logan, he just started a new IT job this week.
28:02Your friend Logan?
28:05Like a dating friend or just a guy friend?
28:11He's special, yeah?
28:12Special.
28:14I assume he thinks you're special, too.
28:18You could say that.
28:20Hey, Mom?
28:22Over here, Doris.
28:28All right, that's good.
28:31So, Mom, who is Roger?
28:35Roger.
28:39Roger's the boy I was dating before Gary was born.
28:43I thought he was going to be here today.
28:47What?
28:49Hey, Mom?
28:51Roger, Roger who, Mom?
28:52What's his last name? You never mentioned him before.
28:56Roger.
28:56Roger.
28:57I just said it. His name is Roger.
29:00Yeah, what's his last name?
29:03You never...
29:06You...
29:08You told me you didn't know who my dad was.
29:11And you were dating this guy before I was born?
29:14That is so silly.
29:16Do you really think that Roger is your dad?
29:19What?
29:20Yeah, he could have been Gary's dad.
29:23But he certainly isn't yours.
29:29I am Gary Mom.
29:33Look at me.
29:36Who's Roger?
29:40Roger.
29:41Roger was supposed to meet us here today.
29:44Dad...
29:45I'm mad at him now.
29:47Dad? Not right now.
29:50She's...
29:53Maybe another time.
30:03Did I tell you all about Tuesday dominoes?
30:07We play every Tuesday.
30:09But nobody believes it when I tell them that I learned to play the game in the big house.
30:32All right, God.
30:35I need your help.
30:38If this is what I'm supposed to be doing, please show me clearly.
30:45Because right now I don't know.
30:55I don't know.
30:56I don't know.
30:59Yeah, baby.
31:08No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
31:11No, no, no, no, no, no.
31:13No, no, no, no, no.
31:24No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
31:24no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
31:24no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
31:24no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
31:24no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
31:40no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
31:54A case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time is what authorities are blaming
31:58for the mix-up. They say a piece of evidence pointed to Mr. Hernandez as the culprit, but
32:04upon further scrutiny, the connection fell apart and his alibi gained strength.
32:14What was at first a nightmare for this East Bank family has turned into a time of thankfulness.
32:19In a statement, the family thanked law enforcement officers for working tirelessly to get to the
32:25bottom of the case and to clear their son's name.
32:32Thanks to an unexpected tip from a former law enforcement officer, we have a new suspect
32:38in custody and we are confident that justice will be served after the unfortunate incident
32:43with Mr. Hernandez.
33:39For Titus Hernandez and his family, this has been a day of vindication.
