Transcripción
00:03Amigos de Diarias Américas, me encuentro con Ed Boon, co-credador de Mortal Kombat por el estreno de Mortal Kombat
00:102 en cartelera.
00:13It would be decided by Kombat.
00:19Ed, such an honor to meet you.
00:22I grew up escaping to their caves to play Mortal Kombat, and this is an amazing opportunity to talk about
00:31how do you come with the idea to create Mortal Kombat?
00:35Because it's such a unique game.
00:37You know, I think ironically, Mortal Kombat came from all the films that we grew up watching in the 70s
00:48and 80s, right?
00:49Enter the Dragon, Bloodsport, Star Wars, Terminator, all those action films that we were raised on, we took all of
00:58that and channeled it into a game.
01:00You could see elements of Enter the Dragon, and you could see elements of Bloodsport and whatnot in Mortal Kombat.
01:07So it's really the result of watching too many action movies.
01:13Let's go, baby.
01:18What is your favorite character and why?
01:22Well, my favorite character has always been Scorpion.
01:25He was, you know, part of it was he was one of the first characters that we worked on when
01:30we got his spear, the get over here and all that stuff.
01:33That's when we really knew there was something special.
01:36It was going to be different than other games.
01:38And so we were, I have a lot of good memories with Scorpion.
01:45It was, my voice was the get over here voice.
01:47It was all of the early parts of the game where a lot of it was revolved around Scorpion.
01:56Me.
02:02Earth belongs to me.
02:04When you make this jump to the big screen, for you as creator, what are the things that are non
02:10-negotiable to create a very good Mortal Kombat film?
02:15There, just over the years, I mean, there have been a few Mortal Kombat films now.
02:20But usually what we consider not negotiable is when a character behaves different from how we've portrayed them.
02:30And for instance, you know, Johnny Cage is kind of like the funny character.
02:37Raiden and Liu Kang are pretty serious.
02:40Scorpion and Sub-Zero are always fighting each other.
02:44Fighting each other, exactly.
02:45And there's a lot of conflict.
02:47There's a lot of mystery to it.
02:49And, you know, for the most part, the films that have come out have been consistent with that.
02:55And when we point out that, hey, you know, this should change, they've been very receptive to that.
03:07You want to know what makes a hero?
03:09What makes this movie different for the other one?
03:13I think the fact that there is an actual tournament in this movie, I think, is a big part of
03:19what a lot of people wanted to see.
03:21That was the feedback they got from the last ones.
03:23They want to see that tournament.
03:24They want to see the, you know, the competition, that whole part of Mortal Kombat.
03:32And they also missed Johnny Cage, I think.
03:35They really wanted to see him.
03:36He was one of the original characters that we made in the first game.
03:42And there was Sonya, there was Kano, there was Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, but no Johnny Cage, right?
03:48And so I think this film writes that.
03:53It corrects it.
03:54And so there's a lot of people who really want to see a good, you know, take on Johnny Cage.
04:09There is like this fine line between gore and comedy that Mortal Kombat, like find this sweet spot.
04:17Yeah.
04:18Do you think that you nailed it with the movie?
04:21Yes, yes.
04:22I think the movie nailed it.
04:23And I think you described it perfectly because, you know, the goal is never to just be, you know, like
04:31a horror movie or something like that.
04:33It, you get so outrageous that nobody can take it seriously.
04:38It's just, it's, it's, you know, I use the word ridiculous a lot.
04:41It was like, you know, oh, come on, that's not going to happen.
04:43And so when you have that element of it, it makes it more of a spectacle than like a horrific
04:49thing.
04:51This is a war for the fate of your world.
04:58Freeze him!
05:00If you could make like a full origin story about one character, which character will you choose?
05:10I would have to say Scorpion, even though his story has been told.
05:15Yes.
05:15There have been animations and whatnot that have been told it.
05:17But I think we could still do something that's unique.
05:22And, you know, there's something mysterious about him.
05:25I think we could also do something like that with Sub-Zero.
05:28And those are the two characters that I think are the most, you visually see them and you immediately think,
05:36you know, Yellow Ninja, Blue Ninja, Scorpion, Sub-Zero.
05:40Those colors are kind of burned into people's brains.
05:45Get over here!
05:51Hi, my name is Ed Boone and we cannot wait for you to check out Mortal Kombat 2, which comes
05:57May 8th in theaters.
