00:00The big man is out on the track and all eyes are on the greatest sprinter in history.
00:08As ever when we see the top sprinters and particularly that man there's great Jamaican support.
00:14It's a long way from Jamaica to Beijing but he doesn't lack for support and even if it's not his
00:22compatriots who are supporting him he's loved all around the world for what he's done.
00:26Of course what he's done is almost the legend started at the really big time here in Beijing
00:33seven years ago.
00:41Well we are scheduled to have this race start in four minutes time.
00:54Such a sense of excitement here in the stadium there are many great characters in the sport
01:02of athletics but at the moment there are none bigger or more enigmatic or charismatic than
01:08Usain Bolt.
01:14The 100 meters semi-finals three of them of these IF World Championships as we build in intensity
01:22on day two of these championships.
01:27World record Usain Bolt 958 and that of course the championship record when he won the title
01:35in 2009.
01:38First two from each of these semi-finals will go to the final which concludes this evening's
01:44entertainment and then two more on times from the three races.
01:49We've seen some very fast sprinting.
01:52These men capable of adding to that.
02:04Not only is there interest in the great man but also plenty of crowd support for the Chinese
02:10record holder.
02:10Zul Bing Tian just next to Bolt in lane six.
02:15So let's go through this lineup.
02:17This is Julian Ruse who's the co-holder of the German record at 10.05.
02:2227-year-old German champion at 100 and 200 meters.
02:27Chris Loft Lemaître the European double champion in 2012 two silvers in 2014 9.92 his best at the 100
02:37meters.
02:39All but two of these finalists semi-finalists have broken 10 seconds diminutive figure but a real new
02:46powerhouse a great new challenge Trayvon Brummel from the United States 20 years of age second in the
02:52American collegiate this year he's studying at Baylor University and then this man who was the
02:58sensation of the American collegiate champions championships Andre de Grasse of Canada not only
03:04that 9.95 personal best but also a win-assisted 9.75 for the Canadian and Pan American Games
03:11champion another 20-year-old then we have Su Bian Tan of China twice the Asian champion roared on by
03:22the
03:22huge crowd here in the bird's nest stadium in Beijing Su's run 9.99 and then the
03:32great man himself Usain Bolt seeking to add to his wonderful record of sprints over the
03:38last decade and proud to represent the great Caribbean sprinting nation of Jamaica
03:51lane eight we have a former Jamaican it's Jack Ali Harvey now Turkish and he set a Turkish record this
04:00year at 10.03
04:019.03 and finally the co-holder of the South African record at 9.97 and they Joe
04:09but it is that is the lineup just two men sure of taking their place in the final and Usain
04:17Bolt goes in
04:18this race in lane seven oh we saw some wonderful sprinting in the heat yesterday conditions not quite as ideal
04:26but it's still pretty good it's a nice evening 20 plus degrees Celsius and it's really getting serious
04:34now fast times yesterday but this is where it really starts to count this to see who will take place
04:41in the final
04:51semi-final number one men's 100 meter hurdles of these 2015 world championships
05:03how well has he got away not bad or little stumble there at the start and Sue of China is
05:08ahead but
05:08Bryant's got a lot of work to do to come through here or there's going to be a sensation but
05:12just look
05:13at him come through when he mattered he has done it he's uh accompanied into the final by de Grasse
05:18of
05:18Canada but the stumble early on almost cost him dear but never right off this man that surge of power
05:25in
05:25mid-race and the way he came through just to make it in time means that we will see him
05:31in the final
05:31but he's going to have to run better than that it's 9.96 time shared by de Grasse and those
05:37two are the
05:38men who are going to make sure of going through to the final that was very very tight indeed for
05:45about
05:4520 meters during that race early on it looked as though Usain Bolt would have to try and wait to
05:52see if
05:53he went through as a fastest loser massive roar from the crowd because Bing Tian Siu has just produced
06:00a national record in 9.99 but that stumble right at the beginning third from left there's the stumble
06:08and look at how much ground he has to make up Bolt is under immediate pressure there and it wasn't
06:14until
06:14the last two or three meters that he was guaranteed a passage through to the final
06:20that was very very tight and he will be concentrating even harder when he comes back
06:26that would have been awful if he hadn't even made the final that was very very close
06:30well let's hope that that's the only problem he has and it's out the way today
06:36de Grasse though run well
06:37I think Usain tried to make it look easy by looking across to pretend that he was easing down
06:42but he really wasn't he had to work all the way to the line to get this one
06:47he was coming hard there's no question about that
06:50but it was awfully close it really was
06:52just on the line there and there was four athletes going across it together look at that
06:58if that had been anyone else their race would have been over
07:04without any question well what a wonderful point from Siu he got the national record there 9.99
07:09they love it here
07:12well that would have been a massive disappointment not only for Usain Bolt but for the whole crowd
07:15and perhaps the whole of the championships really if he didn't get through let's watch again
07:19one or two strides there he get it into it but then all of a sudden he just seems to
07:23slip
07:24only a man of his caliber can recover from that
07:27he gets himself up again this is it this is Usain Bolt working hard
07:31you very rarely see this but he had to do it to get back
07:35he knew that this stage I think that he just got it
07:37he looks across to check but it was close
07:40no doubt that there was at one stage there a little bit of doubt in his mind I think whether
07:45he was going to do it
07:47yes even the greatest
07:51sometimes have to deal with a near disaster there because he almost fell
07:56and wow that's behind him he can forget about it when it comes to the final
08:02if there is a positive to be taken as Siu soaks up the deserved plaudits and applause
08:08four men under 10 seconds
08:10well there's the final result then of that fantastic race Bolt and de Grasse sharing the same time at 9
08:16.96
08:17they're through to the final and Brumel and Siu have run 9.99
08:21four men under 10
08:24if there is a positive to take from that
08:26he will be even more focused for the final
08:30than he might otherwise have been
08:32because he knows he's got to be on absolute top form
08:36just as he was in Daegu after being disqualified for a false start in the 100
08:40he made absolutely sure that he came back and rectified the mistake by winning the 200
08:45I'll tell you the other fascinating thing really in that race is the other athletes must have wondered what was
08:48going on
08:49because Bolt wasn't in front for once
08:51yes exactly
08:52because Brumel I think was leading probably at about 50 metres
08:55and he had what two metres at least on Bolt at that point
08:59he wouldn't have seen him
08:59no I just think they probably didn't know what was going on
09:02it must have gone through their mind where is he
09:06we turn our attention to the second of the semi-finals in the men's 100 metres
09:12Justin Gatlin goes in five
09:14the fastest man in the world this year
09:19we also now know that anyone
09:22taking either of the fastest loser spots in the final
09:26will have to run
09:27at least as fast as 9.99
09:31four men in the first semi-final under 10 seconds
09:37two very fast Americans
09:40in this semi-final
09:44from the inside
09:45Levi Cadogan fourth in the world juniors last year
09:48he made the Pan American final
09:49still just a teenager
09:51what a night and what a moment for him
09:56proudly flying the flag for Barbados
09:59yet another Caribbean island
10:01with great credentials when it comes to sprinting
10:0510.06 already this season
10:07he'll surely have to go faster
10:09if he's to join Usain Bolt and Andre de Grasse
10:14in the world championship final
10:20representing South Africa
10:22joint record holder
10:23Akane Sabin won the world student games
10:26earlier this year
10:27just fifth in the
10:28Commonwealth 200 metre final last year
10:30but he's an improved athlete this season
10:32hence he's gone under 10
10:34well speaking of sub 10 second performances
10:3710 of those alone this season
10:39this season alone for Mike Rogers
10:41a prolific performer
10:43sixth in the final in Moscow
10:45can he go better
10:47Justin Gatlin
10:49by some margin
10:50the fastest athlete in the world this year
10:53over 1 and 200 metres
10:559.83 in the heats
10:59what can he do here in the semis
11:05pumped, focused and ready
11:07as he always is
11:09a lightning quick starter
11:10Aaron Brown
11:11semi-finalist
11:13in the Olympics
11:14over 200 metres
11:15semi-finalist over the one
11:16in Moscow
11:17two years ago
11:1823 years of age
11:22world indoor bronze medalist
11:23from Qatar
11:24Femi Ogunodi
11:26sub 10 seconds
11:27in the heat
11:28he's having a really good season
11:31can he go
11:32one race further here
11:35poised and bouncing
11:36like a boxer
11:37ready for the first bell
11:39Nikhil Ashmeed
11:40former world junior silver medalist
11:42over 200 metres
11:43he was fifth in the 100 in Moscow
11:45two years ago
11:46a vital part of the Jamaican relay quartet
11:52anxious look on his face
11:53and on the outside
11:55representing Great Britain
11:56CJ Uja
11:58European junior gold medalist
11:59a couple of years ago
12:009-9-6
12:01last season
12:02and this season
12:04the second semi-final of the men's 100 metres
12:08Cadogan Barbados in two
12:10Simbin South Africa three
12:12Rogers USA four
12:13Gatlin USA five
12:15there he is
12:16Brown Canada six
12:17Ogunodi Kata seven
12:19Ashmeed Jamaica eight
12:21Uja Great Britain nine
12:25an expectant hush
12:27descends
12:28around the Olympic Stadium
12:29only the first two
12:31will advance
12:33to the climax of the evening
12:35the final
12:49a clean start
12:51Gatlin usually gets away well
12:52and he's done so again here
12:54Ashmeed trying to get into his running
12:55Ogunodi coming away
12:56but it's Gatlin and Rogers
12:58by quite some margin
13:009.77
13:03and once again
13:04he is underlining his credentials
13:08as at least
13:10equal favourite with Usain Bolt
13:12for this title
13:13and on the evidence of the first semi-final
13:16you might argue he is the overwhelming favourite
13:19in his own right
13:209.77 confirmed
13:229.86
13:24a season's best
13:25for Mike Rogers
13:26in second place
13:27Ogunodi will not have a fastest loser spot
13:31he was third in 10 flat
13:32that was very
13:34very impressive
13:35from Justin Gatlin
13:37his season looks
13:39as though it's getting better and better
13:40the fifth time in seven races this year
13:43he's broken 9.8
13:45great run
13:46fought this run compared to
13:47to Usain Bolt in the previous race
13:50got a great start
13:51no problems at all
13:54looking relaxed
13:55if anything else
13:55he's still looking as if he could go a little bit faster
13:58if he has to
14:01slow motion shot from behind
14:02Gatlin here
14:04at this stage really
14:06started to pull away
14:07very very comfortably indeed
14:11they were miles clear of the rest
14:14there's a slight ease down there towards the line
14:17about five metres or so
14:18so yeah a little bit still in the tank
14:19not much maybe
14:20but with a time of 9.77
14:23you'd expect that
14:24season's best for Rogers too
14:25behind him
14:279.86
14:29he has been
14:30so consistent
14:32this season
14:32and that continues here
14:35Justin Gatlin
14:36underlining his credentials
14:38as the favourite for the 100 metres
14:409.77
14:41Rogers takes the other automatic spot
14:44with the season's best
14:48well the men coming out
14:49for the third of the semi-finals
14:51including Gay and Powell
14:53two of the biggest names
14:55in sprinting for many years
14:58but let's look again
14:59at Justin Gatlin
15:00fourth from the right hand side
15:02he's putting together
15:04an almost unmatchable
15:06series of 100 metre times
15:08as Peter was saying
15:10something like five or six times
15:12he's gone under 9.8
15:15already this season
15:16I guess the question is
15:18how much faster can he go in the final
15:20and what can Usain Bolt find
15:22in the big showdown
15:23I think the other question is psychologically
15:25what's going to happen
15:26when they're matched
15:27for the first time
15:28man against man in the race
15:30who's got the ability
15:31to deal with that
15:32and not tense up
15:34here's semi-final three
15:36of that 100 metres
15:39on the inside there
15:40is Tefyan of Iran
15:42the big two I suppose
15:44are in the middle of the field
15:44seated well
15:46that's Tyson Gatlin
15:47United States
15:48and Asafa Powell
15:49as we said earlier
15:50but to Jimmy Vecot
15:52of France
15:52he won his heat
15:53and is the co-holder
15:55of the 100 metre record
15:56he looked really good
15:57when he won his heat
15:58heat five
15:59here's Tyson
16:01former world champion
16:03looked very good
16:04in heat two
16:04won it very comfortably
16:05indeed
16:06second in Monte Carlo
16:11already this year
16:12run under that
16:14Magic 9-9
16:15with that 9-8-7
16:21Asafa Powell
16:22just to his right
16:23in lane six
16:24as I said
16:25he broke the world record
16:26in Athens
16:26Gateshead
16:27Zurich
16:27and Rieti
16:29in the 100 metres
16:3232 years of age
16:33now
16:34he's the captain
16:34of the team
16:35in Beijing
16:35and he's been
16:36the most prolific
16:38sub-10 run-up
16:40in history
16:41I think Peter
16:42was saying
16:42it's almost
16:43what is it
16:4390 or so
16:44Peter
16:44sub-10 seconds
16:46for the 100
16:48yes indeed
16:49it's
16:50well he ran
16:50his
16:51including wind-assisted
16:52marks
16:52he ran his
16:5298th yesterday
16:54it could be a 99
16:55now
16:56and guess what
16:56in the final
16:57well that could
16:59be a significant
17:00couldn't it
17:01absolutely
17:01strange
17:02almost eerie
17:03there we go
17:05let's go through
17:06the field again
17:07Tefyan
17:08is of Iran
17:09Urania record
17:10at the 100 metres
17:11not quite broke
17:1210 seconds yet
17:13he's best
17:1410.10
17:17he's in exalted
17:18company here
17:19isn't he really
17:22just on his
17:23inside
17:23Richard Kilty
17:24Great Britain
17:25the world
17:26indoor
17:28champion
17:29and the European
17:30indoor champion
17:31at the 60 metres
17:32goes very fast
17:32for the first 60 metres
17:33but he slightly
17:34lacks a little bit
17:34over that last
17:35part of the race
17:36and that's where
17:37his Achilles heel
17:37is I suppose
17:39and then this very
17:40good Frenchman
17:41Jimmy Vico
17:42of France
17:42co-holder
17:43of that record
17:44with Francis
17:45of Aquelio
17:47looked good
17:47got a slight
17:48strapping
17:49he did have
17:49in his heat
17:50but it's come off
17:51now for this
17:52semi-final
17:53Tyson Gay
17:54United States
17:56well
17:56the Americans
17:57are coming strong
17:58in the 100 metres
17:59not so good
17:59in the 400 hurdles
18:00but they're really
18:00doing well here
18:01and Tyson
18:01obviously
18:02a big favourite
18:03in this race
18:06and the big man
18:07on his outside
18:08a Sapphire Power
18:09of Jamaica
18:12one of the greatest
18:13sprinters of all time
18:15maybe not at his best
18:16but he is still
18:17a major threat
18:21crowd love it
18:25to his right
18:26from Barbados
18:27Ramon Hittens
18:28second in qualifying
18:30in heat three
18:31the Pan American
18:32silver medals
18:33at the 100 metres
18:36looking slightly
18:37worried as well
18:37he should be
18:38and then another
18:39good athlete
18:40Chandri Martina
18:42of Netherlands
18:43he and you are saying
18:44Bolt were the only
18:45men to have contested
18:45both Olympic sprint
18:46finals in Beijing
18:47and London
18:51finally
18:53in lane nine
18:54Matiti
18:55of the Ivory Coast
18:56the African champion
19:00third in his
19:01qualifying heat
19:07all eyes really
19:08I suppose
19:09on the middle
19:09but you never
19:10know really
19:12Tyson Gay
19:12always takes
19:13that final sip
19:14of water
19:15before he goes
19:15down to the blocks
19:16does this
19:17every time
19:18raises his arms
19:18it's a ritual
19:20it's what most
19:20athletes seem to
19:22have in the 100 metres
19:23they like to be
19:24absolutely perfect
19:25when they go down
19:25to the blocks
19:54Teffian
19:56Kilti
19:56Time, 9.96.
20:00Well, cameras focusing on Gate, but it was close again in that race.
20:08Slight headwind, minus 0.4, shown on the wind clock.
20:13They're all looking up at the scoreboard, Peter.
20:15It's not that straightforward, and they've given it to Tyson Gate.
20:18Well, the reason the crowd are getting excited
20:21is because Jimmy Vico has finished in third place in 9.99,
20:26which means we have three athletes in fastest loser spots
20:30all on the same time.
20:32Binh Chang-Syu of China, Trayvon Brummel from the first heat in 9.99,
20:37so all three of them are tied,
20:39and potentially there's only room for two.
20:42Not necessarily. This is a nine-lane track.
20:44But normally they would now look at thousands.
20:47What you do, I mean, that is the qualifying condition,
20:49so I'm sure that will happen.
20:50They'll see on thousands which of the nine-nines is quickest.
20:53Anyway, let's get back to the race itself.
20:55Tyson Gate, I think, was working hard.
20:56Asafa Powell come really well at the end.
20:59The last few strides, he was relaxing through
21:01and just missed out, I think, on dipping.
21:03If he'd have dipped, it'd have been even closer.
21:05I think Powell was under a little bit of pressure
21:07because you called it correctly, Steve.
21:10Gittins of Barbados got out really, really hard,
21:12so Powell found himself behind on his left with Gate,
21:16behind on his right from Gittins,
21:18and it took the Jamaican a little longer to get into his rhythm
21:21than he perhaps would have liked.
21:23Gittins got out brilliantly.
21:25I think Powell had to work very, very hard
21:27to ensure automatic qualification there.
21:30The camera angle is deceptive here.
21:32It's following it, really,
21:32and it looked at the beginning when we saw the race
21:34that actually Gay led all the way,
21:35but I think maybe at some stage there,
21:37it was only over the last, sort of, 50 metres or so
21:40that Gay started to come ahead.
21:42Powell was closing him down again.
21:44It was preciously close.
21:45None of those men, I don't think,
21:46had any more to give in that race,
21:48whereas we saw previously
21:50the relaxed performance of some of the other athletes.
21:55There it is, the confirmation.
21:579.96 for Tyson Gape.
22:00Safa Powell's 9.97,
22:02and as Rob's pointed out,
22:03Jimmy Vico there in France, 9.99.
22:07And so while we're not absolutely certain
22:09who will be the eight men to contest the final,
22:10one thing we do know,
22:11they will all have broken ten seconds
22:13in their semi-finals.
