03:08If you, if you would have told me that I'd be talking to you one day, I would have thought
03:14you were a liar.
03:15I'm such a fan.
03:17You have just such a glorious career in so many facets of this industry.
03:21Just thank you for coming.
03:23I'm very excited that you're here.
03:25Is it true that I find this funny?
03:28So you, this book is for people who don't like poetry?
03:31Uh huh.
03:32What?
03:33Yes.
03:34What?
03:34Yeah, it happened one day when I was working out with my trainer and I said,
03:42I wanted to recite a poem to her.
03:45And I said, do you read poetry?
03:48And she went, no.
03:51I can't.
03:52I thought, oh dear, what is that?
03:55So when we went upstairs for massage, I read her a Mary Oliver poem.
04:02And she said, oh, that's not sappy.
04:08And I thought, oh, she thinks poetry is roses are red, violets are blue.
04:14Yeah.
04:14You know, I thought, that's, that's really too bad.
04:18So I introduced her to poetry and she said, oh, I really like this.
04:23Yeah.
04:23So that put a thought in my head that maybe other people there are in the world who would
04:30like to be introduced poetry the way I know it and understand it and the way it's affected
04:35me.
04:36So somebody said, well, why don't you write a book about poetry?
04:39And I went, ding.
04:41Okay.
04:42So that's what I did.
04:43How did you choose?
04:44Because it's such a specific thing too.
04:46Like, I bet it, I bet once she found, you know, your trainer, when she finds, you know,
04:51poets that really touch her, then she leans more in.
04:53Like, how did you choose which poems to put to you?
04:55Well, I did it sort of autobiographically.
04:58I, I remembered the first poem that really touched me deeply when I was in high school.
05:06Yeah.
05:07Um, and the end of the, of the poem is the last words are, I am the master of my
05:15fate.
05:15I am the captain of my soul.
05:18And I went, yes.
05:20Yeah.
05:20My life doesn't always have to be like this, which wasn't so hot.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Uh, I am the master of my fate.
05:27You choose.
05:28You decide.
05:28I can do what I want with my life.
05:31It's inspiring.
05:31And it, it just, it moved me so much that I started paying attention to other poets and
05:36poetry in general.
05:38And I've just found it a very rich source of wisdom and fun and understanding and, um,
05:49ideas.
05:50And it's just really fed me, fed me spiritually and intellectually in every other way in my
05:57life.
05:57Which, hell yeah.
05:58Anything that can feed you spiritually, I'm down.
06:01I, I choose that.
06:02So besides reading poetry, you do something that I love.
06:05My, uh, friend actually introduced this to me.
06:07She was like, you know, instead of all the gifts, why don't you do experiences?
06:10Like with the kids or like with your family and you do that.
06:13You're big on that, right?
06:14Like.
06:14Yeah.
06:15I, I read one time that said, don't waste your money on buying things by experiences.
06:21It's brilliant.
06:21My favorite one of those experiences was, I went with a spiritual group to Egypt and
06:27it was the end of 1983.
06:30Yeah.
06:30And I decided New Year's Eve and 1984 is coming up and that's the future.
06:38Why don't I greet it from the top of the pyramid?
06:43That's a good idea.
06:45So I found a guide and I went at night and he helped climb with me up to the top.
06:52And I was very surprised when I got up there.
06:54I thought it would be empty, but it was full of people with cameras and tripods and everything.
07:00And then I sat on the edge of it and waited facing where the sun was going to rise.
07:05And the most remarkable thing happened, all the dogs all the way around were barking.
07:13And then all of a sudden they stopped.
07:16And then all the horses started whinnying.
07:20Yeah.
07:21And they did that for a while.
07:23And then they stopped.
07:25And then the camels went.
07:27And they took turns all the way around.
07:31The whole breed, whatever it was, would all make their sounds at the same time.
07:37And then finally, just as we were getting to sunrise, it stopped.
07:45There was a moment of silence and then cock-a-doodle-doo.
07:52And the sun came up over the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
07:57Yeah.
07:58Now that's an experience.
08:00Oh, that's incredible.

08:32We are back with Oscar winner Ellen Burstein.
08:37Her new book is called Poetry Says It Better, Poems to Help You Wake Up.
08:41So you include your favorite poems in your book.
08:44And one is When Death Comes by Mary Oliver.
08:47Mary Oliver.
08:47Who you love.
08:48And it goes, I hope I don't mess this up for you.
08:51I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering, what is it going to be like?
08:57That cottage of darkness.
08:59So why is that one movie?
09:00I love it.
09:01Yeah.
09:02I think it sounds more hopeful and less scary about death.
09:05And I think people are afraid to talk about death a lot.
09:07Yeah.
09:07And I think it's really important that we do talk about death.
09:10Yeah.
09:11And that we prepare for it and know what we're, you know, going to face.
09:16Yeah.
09:17Because when the moment comes, it's no time then to say, gee, I should have learned how you do this.
09:25Yeah.
09:25You know, when I say learn how to do it, how to mentally enter into that state.
09:32So people who have learned to meditate can do it better than people who are just like, oh, my God.
09:39Oh, my God.
09:40Here it is.
09:41I might be the latter.
09:44I need to meditate.
09:46I love the full of curiosity, though, because I think people see it as an ending.
09:50And you don't know.
09:51Could be a whole beginning.
09:52You know what I'm saying?
09:52You just don't know.
09:53Well, you know, there's been a lot of studies about people who have temporarily died and then brought back to
10:01life.
10:02And they describe a whole process of going through a tunnel of light and, you know, being met by people
10:08and then it being reversed.
10:10I did a movie about it years ago called Resurrection, where we show that, actually.
10:18And, you know, there's been a lot of studies recently where I've been reading, oh, it seems like there's a
10:26process when you die.
10:28And there are various stages of it.
10:30And the brain stays aware for a while.
10:34Mm-hmm.
10:35So I'm looking forward to being able to navigate that and be curious about that cottage of darkness, as Mary
10:45Oliphant says.
10:46Yeah.
10:46It's so beautifully put.
10:48I don't mean it too soon, by the way.
10:50Yeah.
10:51I can wait a little bit.
10:53Yeah.
10:53I still have another book to write.
10:55Yeah, yeah.
10:56I love it.
10:57But you won an Oscar for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

11:01It's so great.
11:02I did not know this.
11:03You had to fight for a different ending, right?
11:06Yeah.
11:08The, uh...
11:11Yeah, it did.
11:12Yeah.
11:13Yeah.
11:13Um, she, all the way through, I don't know if you've seen this movie.
11:18It was some time ago.
11:20You probably hadn't been born yet.
11:22I've always seen it.
11:23Yeah.
11:24Um, she had a dream to go to Monterey, I think.
11:29Mm-hmm.
11:29Um, and she was trying to get there.
11:32She was hitchhiking with her kid across the country, and she has a relationship with a
11:37Kris Kristofferson character, um, who has a ranch nearby.
11:41And, um, by the end of the film, there was some, we got into, was I going on to Monterey,
11:51or was I going to stay with the guy?
11:55And I had her going on to Monterey, because if Alice doesn't live here anymore, it was like the first
12:01film told from a woman's point of view.
12:04So I didn't want her to give up her dream and, you know, end up in a happy marriage with
12:09a guy.
12:09I wanted her to go on.
12:12He wanted her to give up her dreams.
12:14Yeah.
12:14Yeah.
12:15And, um, the head of the studio, John Kelly, said, no, no, no, she has to go in with the
12:21guy.
12:21And we kept rewriting it, rewriting it, so that it would justify her staying.
12:27And he kept insisting, no, she has to go in with the guy.
12:30And I said, but John, if she, and I started to argue my point, and he said, let me put
12:36it this way.
12:37If she doesn't end up with the guy, we're not making the film.
12:42Oh.
12:44I see.
12:46What do we do about that?
12:48So we, we were shooting the film and we had no ending.
12:51We kept trying to figure out how we were going to satisfy John Kelly and ourselves.
12:56And finally, it was the day before we were going to shoot the end of this scene.
13:00And Marty Scorsese was the director.
13:03And he had this wonderful way of, at the end of the day, the actors rehearsing the next day's work.
13:10Mm-hmm.
13:11And we could improvise.
13:13It didn't have to be exactly as written.
13:15So we go into the scene, this last scene that we have to come up with the ending.
13:20And all of a sudden, Chris Christopherson says, come on, I'll take you to Monterey.
13:27I said, you will?
13:29He said, yeah, I don't give a damn about that ranch.
13:32I'll sell it.
13:34And so we had the end of the scene.
13:37We, we ended up, the, the guy took me and followed my dream and he came along.
13:45Yeah.
13:45So that's the end of the movie.
13:47Which is so crazy because that's like one of the most loved parts of the film.
13:52Well, you see, at that time when we made the film, every movie made was told from the man's
14:00point of view.
14:01That's what I'm saying.
14:02Yeah.
14:03I had shot The Exorcist and John Kelly was looking, who was the head of Warner Brothers,
14:08was looking at the dailies every day.
14:11And he called my agent and he said, we want to do another movie with this girl.
14:15So they, they started, send me the scripts that they had with a female part in it.
14:22And all of the, all of the parts were like, the man goes out to save the world and his
14:30wife
14:30stays home to make him a cup of tea when he returns.
14:33Wow.
14:34You know?
14:35Yeah.
14:41The physical comedy is great.
14:44I, I just wasn't excited about that.
14:47Yeah.
14:48Yeah.
14:49You know, that plot.
14:50Yeah.
14:51So, so we kept trying to come up with something.
14:55Yeah.
14:55That was from a woman's point of view.
14:58And we finally found this script that was a standard love affair.
15:04And I wanted it to be a woman's point of view.
15:08I wanted to make a film like a woman, like my friends, like we were all facing at the time.
15:14It was just the beginning of the woman's movement.
15:16And nobody heard of doing a film from a woman's point of view, you know?
15:21So it took a lot of adjusting.
15:24Yeah.
15:25Along the way.
15:26And it turned out that it was a man who came up with the idea that he'd go along with
15:31us.
15:32Yeah.
15:34And that was the new woman's point of view.
15:38So technically from a man, that's incredible.
15:41Yeah.

17:37But 20 minutes ago, I was FaceTiming my partner and saw our baby there in a park and I just
17:44started.
17:45I know because you're not there.

17:54But what drew you to being a part of Beef?
17:57Other than, I mean, the huge success of the first one, obviously.
18:00Yeah.
18:01Lee Seung Jin, Sunny.
18:02Yeah.
18:02The creator, director.
18:04He was, I mean, I loved.
18:05It was during May-December Press and then I saw him.
18:09He showed me on his phone this PowerPoint presentation.
18:11I think he just copied and pasted it, like, seconds before he showed me and was like,
18:15this is in our writer's room.
18:17And I was like, oh, is the character inspired by, you know, my hair, my style?
18:23And he was like, no, we're writing it for you.
18:25What?
18:26Yeah.
18:26How big of a compliment is that?
18:29I know.
18:30Yeah.
18:30And it was like, he gave me a North Star of where he wanted it to end.
18:33Yeah.
18:34But then, you know, that just kind of spawned thousands of hours of conversations and getting
18:41to know each other's experiences, talking about the shadow self, the subconscious and
18:45all the woo-woo, wah-wah stuff that I love.
18:49Yeah.
18:49Yeah.
18:49You know, and then beef became what beef is.
18:53Yeah.
18:54I heard you got injured on set.
18:56How so?
18:56Oh, gosh.
18:58So, no spoilers, but we were, it was episode eight, and it's a running shot.
19:03It's an incredible running shot.
19:05We did maybe six takes of me just running.
19:08Mm-hmm.
19:08And they're like, we got it.
19:09But I felt like I wasn't running fast enough.
19:11And I'm a former, you know, collegiate athlete.
19:14I ran the 100-meter dash in high school in 10.9 seconds.

20:30And so, um, I went to go get a shot, cortisone shot.

20:44They go, oh, it's extracted DNA from salmon sperm.

23:30And it's, you know, I'm getting old and that's what people do now.

23:37And it was actually my wife's idea.

23:40Because I didn't want to do a typical podcast where I just, you know, because there's so
23:45many.

23:50We're, it's a very charitable show.
23:53What we do is.
23:54I mean, helping and funny.

23:56So I bring on like two comedians or comedy writers, people that I love working with and
24:01Moana spotlight because the most fun part of being a comedy writer is like the genesis
24:06of the idea.
24:07Then you actually have to bring the dog puppet to Hawaii and hump people on the shoulder.
24:13And it's not as glamorous as it sounds.
24:15No, but, but coming up with stuff with writers is so much fun.
24:19And my wife said, why don't you bring on writers and make it interactive?
24:24And like, if somebody has to make a speech at a wedding or somebody has a job interview,
24:29then they come on and you punch up the job interview or the, you know, so we've had
24:35everybody.
24:36Yeah.
24:37Yeah.
24:37And we've had everybody from like a guy in an acapella group who wanted banter between
24:43songs.
24:44He wanted them to be funnier.
24:45And we had a, a mom who, who wanted to break up with her mom group in a diplomatic way.
24:51Oh my gosh.
24:52Like write a letter that didn't hurt their feelings and made them laugh, but still get
24:56out of there.
24:57But, but was like unsubscribed.
24:59Yeah.
25:00Pretty much.
25:00Yeah.
25:01That's so great.
25:02Yeah.
25:03No, we have so much fun doing it.
25:05So before you go, you have night of too many stars coming up.
25:08Yes.
25:09So explain what it is.
25:10And it's actually different this year too.
25:11Well, it's in LA.
25:12We've always done it in New York.
25:14We've done it on TV at times.
25:16I like doing it live because then comedians, we can get more comedians who are willing to
25:20do their acts.

25:21But we always have, we have an amazing lineup this year.
25:25Conan's going to be there and Jon Stewart hosts and Steve Carell and Adam Sandler and Nikki
25:29Blazer and Sarah Silverman and Bill Burr and Noah Wiley.

25:35We got a lot of great people.
25:37And, but, and besides doing standup, we have a lot of fun with interactive live auctions
25:44that we do.
25:45Crazy stuff where people in the audience actually bid to come on stage and do something with,
25:52um, like for example, in the past we've had.
25:55Please tell the bathroom one.
25:57Oh, you got it.

25:59This is awesome.
26:00Um, Seth Rogen was a guest once.
26:04Yeah.
26:04And, uh, he auctioned off the opportunity to take a with him.
26:09And then, and so we, you know, people bid.

26:16And they, they, yes, they just hit the.
26:17It's all for a good cause.
26:18The camera follows them, the camera followed them downstairs into the urinal, into the bathroom

38:11And so this book is, the foundation of this book is centered around a question
38:15That I've asked for the last almost 30 years in my office

38:20But the title is Wait, Where Am I in This?
38:24Well, in our field, there has to be a lot of acronyms for everything

38:27And so Wait is actually, where am I in this?

38:32But it's also the pause to take a beat
38:35Just to find yourself in the situation
38:37We have to change ourselves to understand the world
38:40Jason, I have to ask you, what made y'all want to do an imprint?

38:43Yeah, we decided to go independent when we were starting our publishing company

39:00And fortunately Lee, who helped Ron and I through a lot of our trauma over the years
39:04And he's really helped us

39:07So we decided to start a publishing company
39:09And he was kind enough to trust us with him being our first author

39:14And I guess we've learned a few things
39:15Because even though the book came out today
39:17It already went to number one three weeks ago in its category
39:19So we're off to a great start so far
