00:00When I was doing SNL, I was just by myself in the office.
00:03You hated it.
00:04Oh, I hated it.
00:05Netflix's new doc, Marty, Life is Short,
00:08spans the life and career of comedy legend Martin Short,
00:11from the highs to the lows.
00:13Starting with his not-so-funny feelings towards Saturday Night Live,
00:17in 1977, he had a breakdown on the way to dinner with Bill Murray,
00:21who had just got on SNL.
00:24Short said he was overwhelmed
00:25and couldn't pretend to be happy for his friend.
00:28Later, in 1984, as a cast member himself,
00:32Short left the show after only one season,
00:34blaming the grueling schedule.
00:37While it didn't stop his decades working in TV, film,
00:40and now Hulu's hit, Only Murders in the Building,
00:43although the doc steers clear of his rumored romance
00:46with his co-star, Meryl Streep.
00:48Instead, it's a love letter to his wife of 30 years,
00:52actress and singer Nancy Dolman.
00:54The happy couple was the envy of their Hollywood friends,
00:56as revealed in a posthumous interview with Catherine O'Hara.
01:00My husband and I went through a little rough patch in our marriage,
01:03and we went to therapy,
01:04and one of the questions she asked is,
01:06do you have friends, do you know a couple,
01:08whose relationship you would love to have or you'd love to emulate?
01:12And we said, oh, we have these friends, Marty and Nancy.
01:15And she said,
01:16I can't tell you how many people have named them.
01:20In 2010, Nancy died at 58 from ovarian cancer.
01:25Short said that she also suffered from endometriosis,
01:28struggled to get pregnant,
01:29and the fertility drugs made her moods heightened.
01:32They eventually adopted three kids.
01:34Their eldest, Catherine, 42, died by suicide in February.
01:39Short called it a nightmare to CBS Sunday Morning,
01:42and said she struggled with mental illness
01:44and borderline personality disorder.
01:47Loss plays a large role in the documentary.
01:49Between the ages of 12 and 20,
01:52Short lost his oldest brother, David,
01:54in a car accident,
01:55and both of his parents.
01:57We had a bad eight years.
01:59That was not a good eight years.
02:00Yeah.
02:01We had a speed dial to the funeral parlor.
02:03Yes.
02:03But there were laughs during those eight years.
02:05Yes.
02:06But that's the point.
02:07Despite these tragedies,
02:09the 76-year-old said
02:10it's false to say that his comedy instincts
02:12came from a place of pain.
02:14In fact, it's the opposite.
02:16Growing up in Canada
02:17as the youngest of five siblings
02:19in a close-knit family,
02:21his childhood was surrounded by so much attention
02:23and so much love.
02:25The doc also includes interviews
02:27with Short's famous pals
02:28Tom Hanks,
02:29Steve Martin,
02:30Eugene Levy,
02:31Andrea Martin,
02:33and Catherine O'Hara,
02:34who passed away in January
02:35at the age of 71.
