00:00Dingo, a heavy attack on the level of the world!
00:31Welcome back to another episode of Other Voices, and this is a very special one. Where are we going, Hugh?
00:36Well, we're going home to my home, Wales, from the west coast of Ireland to the west coast of Cymru.
00:41Cymru, Amber.
00:42D'ar jawn, Mekie.
00:43D'ar jawn, Ani Mac. Very good. Yeah, it was there, and it was wonderful, a really special weekend.
00:50Yeah, we have such an amazing array of performances for you. All these brilliant artists who descended on Cardigan for
00:56the weekend.
00:57But let's start with Carlo's Finest. This is Ye Vagabonds.
01:12Bells ringing in the buttered yard
01:15Evicted this morn, thought you might have heard
01:19At five in the morning they caught their way
01:23We were singing in the kitchen when the bailiffs charged
01:27We were the only those wild things played
01:30Airfoot dancing in the concrete coast
01:34Swimming in a river of smoke and serotonin
01:37Our forgotten city of glitter and blowers
01:40I watched the water rise
01:50And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:05There was a time we kept each other floating
02:08All tied together, falling up and down
02:11Thought for a time we could all back to float
02:14But the old river rose and swallowed our town
02:17There was a time we didn't get an answer
02:21I said all the things I was bad at the start
02:24You cut me loose and drifted away
02:27Tried and failed, wandered apart
02:30I watched the water rise
02:40And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:47Faked with a quinine
02:47There was a little boundary
02:52This is the time we saw
02:54And you left her with aíz
02:54The hard time you were there
03:02The departments were like
03:03I was trying toquest this
03:03And you can pick up the water
03:03And I was trying to locate them
03:03And you know
03:05I was trying to catch them
03:06But I'm trying to catch them
03:06We're trying to catch them
03:06And you were trying to catch them
03:07I was trying to catch them
03:20I lost the water
03:24Eyes and I have my cover
03:29I lost the water
03:39Rise and I have my cover
03:42Maybe for too long
03:58What a year it's been for Panic Shack.
04:02But take us back to the beginning, Sarah.
04:04How and when did you form?
04:06So we formed in 2018 when we tried just to do something.
04:12Because the girls had to learn the guitars and everything.
04:15And then we had our first gig in 2019.
04:18The end of 2019.
04:19Tell us about the early gigs then, Emily.
04:22Like the first Panic Shack ones.
04:23What do you remember about them?
04:26Not knowing what I was doing at all.
04:27I remember being like, I can't hear anything.
04:30I'm like, my amp's not even on or something.
04:32Or I start playing and my picks and all the strings.
04:35And I'm like, everything's on the tune.
04:36But it was like a baptism of fire because none of us could really play.
04:40It was crazy.
04:41We were just figuring it out on the go.
05:11But weirdly, everyone seemed to like it.
05:12Because there's some proper feminist topics on the album.
05:17Body shaming, yes.
05:18And on the song, that's the topic of the song Gok Wan, isn't it?
05:21Gok Wan, yeah, of course.
05:22Like, we grew up in the noughties where every show was about your weight, your looks.
05:29Yeah, we just had so much pent up feelings about that.
05:33And we thought, let's get it out there.
05:35And Gok Wan, I think, did it well.
05:38I score for two hours a day, not enough to keep the red, bring your shame away.
05:42If someone gets flat and my ass is perky, maybe I could get everybody to like me.
05:47Be just for dinner, starving yourself, training at your thumbs up on the shelf.
05:52Beautiful stripes and skipping meals, never takes as good as skinny feels.
05:56I look good, this is all I do.
06:00Body is yours, it's right for you.
06:05I look good, this is all I do.
06:09My body is yours, it's right for you.
06:14I squat for five hours a day.
06:18Fat or pregnant, thin or dying, what would the tabloid say?
06:23And I throw up everything I need.
06:27Because nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
06:36I look good, this is all I do.
06:55I run and josh, it's life of you.
06:59I look good, this is all I do.
07:00This is all I do.
07:04My mind is gone.
07:05It's all I care.
07:09Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived.
07:13Wanna go down in history for being thin.
07:18Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived.
07:22Wanna go down in history for being thin.
07:30Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived.
07:45I love work.
07:47This is all I do.
07:50My mind is gone.
07:51It's all I care.
07:54I love work.
07:56This is all I do.
08:09Now this next band are one of the most popular live bands in Wales.
08:13Their album is Mill on the Hill.
08:16Normally, the absurdist pop is quite theatrical and a lot of fun to watch on stage.
08:22Now tonight, it's fun, but it's also very special.
08:25Something a bit more subdued from the Cardiff-based band who've toured all around Europe.
08:31Here they are at Other Voices. It's Mellon Mellon.
08:34The adoration began at five.
08:41On the 6th of May, t'was a Sunday.
08:52Can't remember the year. I don't tend to think of things any, will you?
08:57And there you were, before my eyes.
09:01Tipped away the trickle of flowers.
09:04Not sure of the kind, but it would never tickle my interest, you see.
09:21One day, my dear mother, she would cry.
09:25She said, I'm worried about the digital addiction.
09:29Do you realise this isn't real life? This is just another fantasy.
09:35I'm a young, with a throne.
09:38I swung the coffin, but it's falling to keep.
09:42I swung the coffin, but it's falling to keep.
09:43I swung the coffin, but it's falling to keep.
09:47I swung the coffin, but it's falling to keep.
10:17Oh, please, don't leave me.
10:23It keeps racing around my world.
10:27I'm all in it.
10:30You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
10:35Well, I suppose I'd just come outside.
10:39I could climb up and find dirty, don't we go?
10:43But I'm not sure of the point, I've never been to see.
10:46Which benefits of it's a big deal?
10:48Yes, I'm in love with a much our times.
10:52From the mountain I've looked into the people.
10:56This is the real life.
10:58This is not some fantasy.
11:13Thank you very much.
11:38This next artist is seen as one of the most exciting emerging out of Ireland of late.
11:44She's from the Shannos tradition of singing and blends the electronica with the ethereal to devastating effect.

30:16through this festival and it's so amazing to be able to be part of it now
30:29thank you very much i've been george christian back now this one's called foot to the floor
30:41i just played the set with the band i'm part of called afro cluster
30:45and we had a wicket on one of the you know my favorite things about other voices and being
30:54here in cardigan is a band plays here and plays another gig you know and quite possibly catch them
31:00if you miss the you know half the set this is my third brother voices feels like it's getting better
31:18over a year you never know what type of venue you're gonna get the good thing all the voices
31:20all the venues are pretty good like and it's cool that they're really kind of vamping like
31:25what's this like a pizza place or something not tonight it wasn't
31:44get to see like a really wide range of different types of acts there's a lot of festivals at the
31:51minute they find out they're very curated to be one kind of a thing because their voice is a little
31:56bit more grass rootsy i'm yet to go explore it so that's kind of what i want to go do
32:02now
32:05i'm looking forward to seeing who's playing learning something new stealing some ideas
32:18this is great to see the welsh and irish artists having this this sort of exchange just the energy
32:24that you get from kelps in general it's such a nice feel here i feel like everyone's here for the
32:29music
32:30people care they want to listen to you they want to know about who you are no matter the genre
32:35of music
32:36it's really cool
32:48i last saw our next band supporting fontaine's dc in the arena in cardiff tonight's gig is a little
32:56bit more intimate but they've just released their third album called cosplay here's sorry
33:06it's
33:06Stop, and I won't let go
33:09You won't, anyone else around
33:12I think they're seated in the dark
33:15For your little girls and I can say no, no
33:18Ain't got no words, I think you've shut me up
33:22And light a spark for me, you can't make it with my
33:26Cross my heart and pray, I'll let you find it one day
33:30Baby, what did you say?
33:31I said I love you
33:33Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:37Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:41Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:44Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:49We can end it here, or we can go back to the store
33:53To control your mind when I control my thought
33:56I think when things are now, I think I'm f***ing up
34:00When it felt so good when we were just in the dark
34:04You can talk all night
34:06Oh, you can just
34:07We can light all day
34:10Just the two thoughts
34:11If you want a different day
34:13If you want a different day
34:15I can take it all away
34:17I love you
34:19Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:22Echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:26Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:30Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:33I love you
34:34Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:38Echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:45Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:47I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
35:19I can't look, I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
35:49I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
36:17I can't look, I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
36:29I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
37:02I can't look, I can't look.
37:07I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
37:28I can't look, I can't look.
37:50I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
38:20I can't look, I can't look.
38:50I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
39:15I can't look, I can't look.
39:21I can't look.
39:35I can't look, I can't look.
39:57I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
40:40I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
41:04I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
41:33I can't look, I can't look, I can't look, I can't look.
41:50but as soon as we started it we both felt this you know it felt huge yeah just our two
41:56voices
41:57and the whole yeah the room just went really quiet and we were like wow this song is like
42:01got more to it than we thought you know yeah it was a bit of that was an interesting moment
42:06like
42:07you notice these things when when you take songs out and start playing them live anyway it's like
42:11they they take on a new meaning uh they're not yours anymore as well like they they stop being
42:16about our lives what we wrote them about and becomes about whatever people however people
42:21relate to them you know it doesn't really in a way it doesn't really matter anymore what we wrote the
42:25songs about um so yeah when when they grab people and then turn into something else it's a really
42:31amazing moment but that was a big one
42:33long after midnight
42:36crossed in the lampline
42:41pouring out a distillation
42:46of hope and desperation
42:49she was grey-eyed
42:51I was tongue-tied
42:55when she thought I
42:59wasn't looking she'd smile like she had nothing left to hide
43:08Mary got away though
43:11went off chasing rainbows
43:15never made it to lay by
43:18living like a mayfly
43:21waking from a strange dream
43:25I wonder what it all means
43:29see her tumble in a free fall
43:32was she really there at all
43:39straight from a hard night
43:42into the daylight
43:48wasn't for the first time
43:50all she needed was a life like just the right friend
43:57steady on a tight bend
44:01never let the sight down
44:04could have made it back to dry ground in the end
44:11Mary got away though
44:14went off chasing rainbows
44:18never made it to lay by
44:21living like a mayfly
44:25waking from a strange dream
44:28boy that what it all means
44:32see her tumble in a free fall
44:35was she really there
44:38child
44:40you
44:42you
44:42because
44:51n
44:53I
44:53need
45:06can
45:07see her
45:07Never found a way back
45:14Lonely dogs keep prowling
45:17Heavy winds go howling through the price
45:23Mary got away though
45:27Went off chasing rainbows
45:30Never made it to the labor
45:33Living like a maize boy
45:37Waking from a strange dream
45:41Wonder what it all means
45:44See her tumble in a free fall
45:47Is she really there now?
45:51Mary got away though
45:54Went off chasing rainbows
45:58Never made it to the labor
46:01Living like a maize boy
46:06Waking from a strange dream
46:09Wonder what it all means
46:12See her tumble in a free fall
46:15Was she really there at all?
46:40We are going to end with a band who formed some seven years ago but their debut album only came
46:45out this year and is smashed into the top 40
46:48There's no one quite like them
46:49They're my panic shack
46:50I wake up
46:51I'm supposed to kill
