00:00:11It's a cold night in Evansville, Indiana. A man says he's headed out to run an errand,
00:00:21but the inside of his vehicle tells a much different story. He's got a gun,
00:00:28a police scanner, and photos of his intended target.
00:00:41It had been a normal day. I had cleaned the house and done a little bit of shopping at Target,
00:00:48and then at the neighborhood Walmart, and then I was at home cooking. I was making
00:00:56mac and cheese and thick-cut pork chops. Becky Doerr and Robbie Doerr were married. She stayed
00:01:05at home while he worked multiple jobs to provide for the family. Robbie had just arrived home after
00:01:10working a 12-hour shift at the fire department. I saw him pull up into the driveway. I didn't see
00:01:17his actual truck, just saw the headlights. Within a minute or so after that, I heard four or five pops.
00:01:28There were several 911 calls that came in. A lot were from neighbors reporting gunshots.
00:01:34Hi, I don't know what happened, but I heard a loud bangs, and then I looked out the door, and
00:01:38the people across the street said,
00:01:40call 911. I heard five shots going off consecutively. Did you see a car-leaved area? No, we didn't. We
00:01:48just heard the popping.
00:01:49And then Elizabeth Fox door would be a 911 caller.
00:01:53I don't mind.
00:01:54I just got shot. All I see is blood on the ground.
00:01:58I mean, what happened?
00:01:59All I saw was my husband's headlights pull into the driveway, and then I heard a bunch of popping.
00:02:06When did that happen, ma'am?
00:02:08Just a few minutes ago.
00:02:10Is the sailor still there?
00:02:13No, I didn't see anybody.
00:02:16Hey, for that shot fired run, they said it's a gunshot wound to the head.
00:02:23It's a shooting, so it would be a heavy police presence there.
00:02:29Is this your husband?
00:02:30Yes.
00:02:31I'm up at the intersection of Colorado and Oakley.
00:02:35Get the med kit! He's still got a pulse.
00:02:39He's starting compressions now.
00:02:40Stay with me, stay with me.
00:02:42Heart's still pumping.
00:02:43As far as who did that to Robbie, all I could think was, what am I going to do without
00:02:48him?
00:02:50One person was shot and killed here tonight, and police still looking for a suspect.
00:02:55I got a call.
00:02:55There had been a shooting.
00:02:56And so my photographer and I immediately headed there.
00:02:59There was a lot of police officers.
00:03:01Crime scene tape was already up.
00:03:03It was a very hectic scene.
00:03:04I started seeing a lot of firefighters arrive.
00:03:07You don't usually see that at a shooting.
00:03:09What the ?
00:03:10I just realized who it is.
00:03:13Robbie!
00:03:14Probably about two minutes.
00:03:15Robbie!
00:03:16Connect electrodes.
00:03:17Robbie!
00:03:18Robbie!
00:03:20He's done, dude.
00:03:21Damn it!
00:03:22Oh, God, no.
00:03:24Oh, damn it!
00:03:26Once we found out that it was Robbie Dorr, we immediately knew this was a beloved firefighter
00:03:32in this community, that he was a leader within the department.
00:03:35He trained a lot of the rookies.
00:03:38Hey, ma'am.
00:03:39Let's go back this way.
00:03:39Come on.
00:03:40Let's go back.
00:03:41I know, ma'am.
00:03:42I don't want to be rude or disrespectful, but we've got to get the fire out of here because
00:03:45that's one of theirs.
00:03:47I was kind of in a haze, like a daze.
00:03:50I was doing the motions of what I needed to do.
00:03:57I relied a lot on my oldest son.
00:04:00When I got there, I got stopped by the police, or maybe it was a fireman.
00:04:04I'm not sure.
00:04:05But then I couldn't go down the street.
00:04:06I was like, what are you talking about?
00:04:07My parents live down here.
00:04:08I have to get to the house.
00:04:10And I said, my dad's just been shot.
00:04:12My dad has to get down there.
00:04:13I understand.
00:04:14You're not going through.
00:04:14It's crime scene.
00:04:15Okay.
00:04:16Well, then get my mother down here.
00:04:17Her name is Elizabeth Dorr.
00:04:20She said that he died.
00:04:22Dad is dead.
00:04:23The whole house was swarming with police officers and other people that had been notified.
00:04:28It was traumatic.
00:04:31My mom had three children.
00:04:33Me, I'm the youngest.
00:04:34Then Dustin, he's the middle child.
00:04:36And Nathan, he's the oldest.
00:04:37Nathan was spam texting me, spam calling me.
00:04:40And he was like, you need to get home.
00:04:42And now, Rob's been shot.
00:04:44I was like, is he okay?
00:04:45He was like, I don't know, Taylor.
00:04:47Get home.
00:04:48Where's my mom?
00:04:50Follow me.
00:04:51Okay, let's go.
00:04:52And we walked up to the house.
00:04:54Still everything's being investigated.
00:04:56Is he alive?
00:04:58No.
00:04:59Oh, my God.
00:05:00The first thing I did was I, you know, called out my mom's name, and I ran over to her,
00:05:05and we just started crying together.
00:05:07Mom.
00:05:08Mom.
00:05:12Mom.
00:05:14We gotta look at all angles of everything.
00:05:17Where's his daughter?
00:05:19She's right there.
00:05:22The next thing I know, at 7.30 at night, I'm getting a call from Nathan.
00:05:26And he goes, Lindsay's dad's gone.
00:05:28And I immediately dash for the house.
00:05:31Is that the daughter?
00:05:32Yeah.
00:05:36Lindsay turned into a puddle.
00:05:38I mean, how can you not?
00:05:41She was inconsolable.
00:05:43He was my best friend.
00:05:45All I could think about was I needed to be next to my dad.
00:05:48Like, my dad was alone on that concrete.
00:05:50He didn't have me.
00:05:51I needed to be with him.
00:05:53Who shot him?
00:05:55I have no idea.
00:05:56No.
00:05:56No, no.
00:05:57I want my dad.
00:05:59I can't let you go out there, okay?
00:06:00Why?
00:06:01You can't.
00:06:02They wouldn't even let me out there with him.
00:06:05It's definitely chaos, but it's organized chaos, because everybody has a job.
00:06:10Once Robbie was pronounced deceased, the patrolmen had to protect the crime scene.
00:06:14So they had to get everybody out of the scene.
00:06:16I've already told fire very suddenly that they have to stay outside the table.
00:06:21When you're dealing with somebody that's a victim of a crime, at the worst, a homicide,
00:06:25like in this situation, you say, okay, this is what it is.
00:06:28You know, we can't change that.
00:06:30We have to put that out of our minds and just treat it like any other investigation.
00:06:33Um, and start doing what we do.
00:06:37We found no shell casings.
00:06:39I don't want to say I'm very, very little.
00:06:44The image that stays with me about that night, several fire trucks are lined up and start a procession into
00:06:52town.
00:06:52Later find out that they were escorting Robbie's body to the coroner's office.
00:07:00When little boys dream of or talk about their hero, sometimes they say Spider-Man.
00:07:07Mine was a true hero. He was a fireman.
00:07:10He was my dad.
00:07:12He said he doesn't have any enemies.
00:07:14He doesn't have enemies. He's a firefighter.
00:07:16Did Robbie have any enemies? He had at least one.
00:07:31Are you going to take that down to the stop sign?
00:07:33Well, I feel like we need to set a car up on this side.
00:07:36Okay.
00:07:36I've got like six rolls in my car if you need them.
00:07:39Oh God, no.
00:07:45No, no.
00:07:49Oh God, please no.
00:07:51No.
00:07:53We're going to walk around the back.
00:07:55They've got some crime scene tape up that we can't go through right now.
00:07:58Once Robbie was pronounced deceased, the detectives that are arriving knew that they had to start talking to people.
00:08:04So the canvas began immediately knocking on neighbors' doors.
00:08:11Hi.
00:08:12Did you guys happen to see what happened out here earlier?
00:08:14Sure did.
00:08:15We were just sitting here watching the TV and just heard noise.
00:08:20Will you guys do me a favor and stay inside until we clear out?
00:08:24Everybody was working for one goal, to figure out what happened to Robbie.
00:08:29Did anybody hear or see anything?
00:08:31All of us were here and we heard the shots, but we didn't see the vehicle.
00:08:36We knew something funny had happened.
00:08:37I was in that, see that camper over there?
00:08:40I was in the garage and I heard five shots go off.
00:08:43And it, and I, it was good out of me.
00:08:46I thought it was right outside my door.
00:08:48So you were in the garage and heard five shots?
00:08:50Yep.
00:08:52Did you hear anything prior to that?
00:08:54No, I sure didn't.
00:08:55See anything suspicious afterward?
00:08:58No, I, I mean, it scared me so much. I turned all my lights off.
00:09:01I didn't know if I could, like if somebody was going around shooting or something.
00:09:05The initial assessment, like moments after the shooting, we were, we, we didn't have a clue what happened.
00:09:13Uh, the detectives are still working on it, okay?
00:09:16I say I don't, I don't have a whole lot of information I can give you right now.
00:09:19Well, someone must have drove down the street, um, perhaps maybe had an issue on the road with Robbie on
00:09:26his way home from work and shot at him.
00:09:30I call it an execution.
00:09:31We checked to see maybe if it was a carjacking and then we could see with the video, uh, that
00:09:36the detectives located that, you know, we ruled out a carjacking.
00:09:43How could this have happened? Wrong person, wrong time, wrong place ran the whole gambit of everything.
00:09:49And for him to be taken out of this world in such a way that it's, it's mind boggling.
00:09:59Robbie door was invincible in engine one.
00:10:02He was in it. He, he, he loved the fire department, the just getting out there and helping people.
00:10:07For nearly three decades, this beloved firefighter worked for everyone but himself.
00:10:12Today is the first day in all those years they've worked without him.
00:10:15I'm sure you've seen the shot we have of Robbie that's really old of him when he had rescued a
00:10:20child from a burning building.
00:10:24He's a hero.
00:10:3028 years he was on the force. Like that's a lifetime. I mean, his dad was a fireman. So it's
00:10:38like a family tradition.
00:10:43Firefighters typically have second jobs. He was a manager at Taco John's. He was doing that to just make extra
00:10:49money.
00:10:50I quit my job to go be a general manager at Taco John's. And that's how I met Rob.
00:10:57I think the first thing he ever said to me was, hey, pretty lady. I miss that.
00:11:04He had always loved my mom.
00:11:07I do remember Robbie coming to me saying, would it be okay if I went on a date with your
00:11:12mom?
00:11:13I know I've just kind of been the friend, but I want to be more than the friend.
00:11:17And I was like, that's completely okay with me. And he was elated. You could see him skipping through my
00:11:23store.
00:11:26Oh, I knew he loved Becky. There was no doubt in my mind. He was 110% in.
00:11:34Our wedding was in Panama City Beach, Florida.
00:11:38Actually, it had rained every day when we first got there. And as soon as I started to walk down
00:11:45the sand, it stopped raining.
00:11:47So it was very, very pretty.
00:11:54I was over the moon to have Robert as my dad.
00:11:58He stepped in to be a parent.
00:12:00My hero became my dad. Finally, I have this hero that I can call my dad.
00:12:05They were married throughout six months. So very quick relationship, marriage, death.
00:12:12Before Rob and I were married, I had been married five times.
00:12:18I think that she wanted to have that picture-perfect life, the husband, the children, but just couldn't find it.
00:12:29Rob was going to be the person that gave my mom a consistent life because my mom was born into
00:12:34adversity.
00:12:35Then she was put into a foster home that didn't have adequate resources to take care of her.
00:12:39She never really had a break until she was ultimately adopted.
00:12:42I was four. My sister Mandy was two. My bond with Mandy, we were the two troublemakers of the house.
00:12:52What was it like growing up with Becky?
00:12:55She was my big sister. She was a good sister.
00:12:59We played, we traded stickers, we jumped on the trampoline, swam, not in trouble.
00:13:07She was the sister that comforted me. For 47 years, she was everything good and pure and wonderful.
00:13:18Like my mom was trying to be like Jude Cleaver, perfect stay-at-home wife.
00:13:24But my mom and Robby, their relationship, it had problems.
00:13:30He started to question things.
00:13:31It seemed normal to you. It seemed good.
00:13:33It was fine until it wasn't.
00:13:47Oh yeah, Robby and I were, you know, best friends for 34 years.
00:13:52And thick thin didn't make any difference. We were always there for each other.
00:13:57We've made a lot of, a lot of runs together.
00:14:00Several fires. Robby gave 110% on every run he ever made.
00:14:05Door was shot to death outside his Oakley Street home last week.
00:14:10The investigation into his murder continues.
00:14:15Shortly after the murder, police began searching Robby's home.
00:14:19In the home, they find something of interest there.
00:14:25It was a note from Robby, written to Elizabeth, and it talked about there being some problems in the marriage.
00:14:31Perhaps someone else that Elizabeth had been talking to, alleged infidelity.
00:14:42My dad seemed very happy at first.
00:14:45But then things, he started to question things.
00:14:49He started to feel insecure. He started to think she was cheating on him.
00:14:52He was like, she always deletes her text messages.
00:14:54Like, she never lets me see her phone.
00:14:57Robby had trust issues when it came to that because it had happened to him previously.
00:15:04I tried to make him feel reassured.
00:15:09I would tell him every time somebody would call me.
00:15:12There were times that my oldest son would call me and he couldn't believe,
00:15:16oh, you're on the phone with him again.
00:15:20He just didn't understand.
00:15:25My mother did confide to me about their relationship.
00:15:30Sometimes a little too much, with too much information.
00:15:33But on that same aspect, so did Dad.
00:15:35Dad asked me to be his confidant.
00:15:39The financial aspect of things created some strain, created some problems between the two of them.
00:15:45As soon as they got home from Florida, she had a brand new car.
00:15:48And then they got a brand new sectional.
00:15:51They had to buy a washer.
00:15:52He had a credit card out at Home Depot.
00:15:55He had a credit card out on the ring.
00:15:58He was borrowed as far as he could borrow.
00:16:01Money got real tight.
00:16:02She wasn't working. He was.
00:16:05Our biggest disagreement was he wanted me to quit working.
00:16:08Because when he's off, that was our time to be together.
00:16:11And that's what he wanted.
00:16:13And I wanted to work.
00:16:15But as far as major trouble brewing, no.
00:16:20We were still learning each other.
00:16:24You think Robbie was trying to make Becky's life better?
00:16:27I do. I do.
00:16:33Rob wanted my relationship with my sister Mandy to be stronger.
00:16:38So that was what we were trying to do by getting together with them.
00:16:44When we started going out with them, I was kind of excited about it.
00:16:47I would be off with Mandy.
00:16:49And he would be off with Larry.
00:16:53How did you meet your fiancee, Larry Richmond?
00:16:57I met him at work.
00:16:58I was working at the Dollar General.
00:17:00He made sure his hand touched mine.
00:17:02And I thought, golly, this one's bold.
00:17:04So we just, we started talking.
00:17:06And a couple months later, he called one night and said,
00:17:10do you want me to bring my stuff to your house?
00:17:13We were together from that time on.
00:17:16He pulled up in his car with all of his clothes and said he was moving in.
00:17:23And she was thrilled beans about it.
00:17:26He was very, very tall.
00:17:27I think he was six foot something.
00:17:29He has a nice smile.
00:17:30I will say that he was the most handsome out of the men that I've seen her date.
00:17:36Larry was always really gentle with my mom.
00:17:38Like he was, he was always like getting her things.
00:17:41Like he was always doing things for her.
00:17:43I don't think I've ever seen her happier.
00:17:45I just, just always felt loved.
00:17:50I came home one day and he had gone to the Goodwill and just laid out a bunch of dresses
00:17:54on the bed.
00:17:56I was like, oh, you know, he didn't even know what size I wore.
00:17:59But he was able to pick them, everything fit.
00:18:02I felt fancy.
00:18:05He was really close to his family.
00:18:07Larry Richmond Sr. is very proud of his son, Larry Richmond Jr.
00:18:10They were two peas in a pod.
00:18:13So you bring him to Thanksgiving, introduce him to your family, but you don't tell them about his past.
00:18:21No.
00:18:21Why not?
00:18:23It felt like a mean thing to do to him.
00:18:26That's not how I wanted everybody to see him.
00:18:29That's not who he was to me.
00:18:30That's not who he was trying to be.
00:18:33Larry had his history.
00:18:34He told me when he was 17 years old, he accidentally killed a man and did 20 years for it.
00:18:40Well, he actually pled guilty to knowingly killing a person.
00:18:45How did he explain it?
00:18:46He said he was trying to get the guy to show him his ID because he believed that the guy
00:18:56had done something inappropriate to one of his friend's brothers.
00:19:00And he said that in the process of trying to see the guy's ID, the gun went off.
00:19:07At first I was like, oh, that's not great.
00:19:09But then slowly, like, I mean, my mom convinced us.
00:19:12So she was like, he's a changed man.
00:19:14It was an accident.
00:19:15You know, he's a great guy, which he was from our perspective.
00:19:18He was a great guy.
00:19:20Um, so yeah.
00:19:21After a while, I just kind of like pushed it to the side, I guess.
00:19:30Does Mandy fall in love easy?
00:19:32I would probably say, yeah, she falls in love very easily.
00:19:35I do, too.
00:19:37My mom's life had just turned around that it was going to be, you know, wonderful.
00:19:40Things are great.
00:19:41And then all of a sudden your world comes crashing down.
00:19:45The Evansville Police Department has not identified any suspects.
00:19:48As far as the list of people that want to hurt Robbie Doerr, we couldn't find a single one.
00:19:53It's not until we're at the autopsy when we discover something, something odd.
00:19:59That is a whole heck of a lot of coincidences.
00:20:19This has been one of the biggest stories I've covered in my career.
00:20:25Any time a first responder is hurt, let alone murdered, I mean, that is a big deal.
00:20:30Especially here in the Evansville area.
00:20:33We regard our first responders very highly around here.
00:20:38And this, from the very beginning, the community was invested in this story.
00:20:45So that night on Oakley, we did not find any shell casings.
00:20:49We found in the road a fired projectile that had damage to it.
00:20:55That's not a casing, that's an actual round.
00:20:57That's a round, yeah.
00:20:58It's not until the next day when we discover something, something odd.
00:21:03And it really started with the autopsy.
00:21:06Had a great forensic pathologist that did the autopsy.
00:21:09When they pulled ammunition from Robbie's body, there was a mixture.
00:21:15There were jacketed projectiles, there was ball projectiles, and there was plastic wadding.
00:21:22One of our firearms experts said, well, you're probably looking at a Taurus judge
00:21:27that fires different types of ammunition in one gun.
00:21:32You could shoot a projectile, or you could shoot a shotgun shell,
00:21:38and it all came from the same firearm.
00:21:40A Taurus judge was referred to us as a hand cannon.
00:21:45Robbie was shot with a very unique gun.
00:21:47That kind of got us off and running, really.
00:21:52Okay, you basically start a war room.
00:21:54You have a big white board, and you put your victim in the middle of that.
00:21:58And then you put a picture of his wife and draw an arrow next to her.
00:22:02Victim's wife, child, best friend.
00:22:06And then you just start building that out.
00:22:08And then you want to look at that board the most and say, okay,
00:22:12who started on the outside but is maybe moving more towards your victim.
00:22:16We discovered that a Taurus judge was stolen, actively stolen,
00:22:21from a pawn shop nearby called River City Pawn Shop.
00:22:26This company, River City Pawn, played a pretty big role in this investigation
00:22:31because Larry Richmond, Jr. worked in there and had access to many firearms.
00:22:36He's a young man with no criminal record.
00:22:38So we go back, printed out Larry Richmond, Jr., put him on our white board.
00:22:42We came across a picture that had a Taurus judge in his lap,
00:22:46and he just sent it to other friends just showing off the gun that he stole in September of 2018.
00:22:56The connection with Larry Richmond, Sr., was that he had a direct connection with Jr.
00:23:04When we put Larry, Sr. in the system, Detective McCormick ran a criminal history on him
00:23:08and found out, oh my gosh, he's on probation for murder.
00:23:12I know what's supposed to make me scared of him.
00:23:14I know what's supposed to make me hate him.
00:23:16I know what it's supposed to do, but it doesn't.
00:23:21He was never scary to me. He was my protector.
00:23:26Mandy was in the middle.
00:23:28She was in a romantic relationship, living together with Larry Richmond, Sr.
00:23:33And she was the sister of Elizabeth Foxdor.
00:23:38And they all lived relatively close to one another.
00:23:47Well, Mandy is my sister.
00:23:49She is three years younger than me.
00:23:52Her personality is she's very outgoing.
00:23:56She is, I don't mean it disrespectful, but she's, she's ditzy.
00:24:01Very ditzy, very, you know, I don't think a whole lot bothers her.
00:24:07She's a good person.
00:24:12The funeral was, was massive.
00:24:17Um, there were fire stations from all around who came to pay their respect.
00:24:25There was such a community interest that we even live streamed the funeral on our website for people to watch.
00:24:31Um, because not everybody even could get in.
00:24:35The funeral was hard.
00:24:39I will never forget the bells.
00:24:43I will never forget all of the speeches that were said.
00:24:47His legacy of integrity is what the foundation of the fire department put upon.
00:24:52I can't listen to backpipes anymore.
00:24:54I can't. I just can't listen to them.
00:24:57The moment that they handed me his helmet, I lost it.
00:25:03I cried a lot through it.
00:25:05All I could think was, I shouldn't be doing this.
00:25:11I shouldn't have to go through this right now.
00:25:15I've seen a few times when, you know, a firefighter or a police officer passes.
00:25:20They get the fire truck out and they get, um, the American flag.
00:25:24And so we went, we went under that.
00:25:26And I mean, it was, it was a beautiful ceremony. It really was.
00:25:29Resty's a brother. We'll take it from here.
00:25:37We knew as soon as the funeral was over, it was time to get this investigation going.
00:25:44And the decision was made collectively to bring in several folks.
00:25:54Things took a massive turn.
00:25:56And, um, there's cops everywhere. Dogs barking and...
00:26:04It was awful.
00:26:10You had Mandy was in a room.
00:26:12Larry Richmond Jr.
00:26:14Larry Richmond Sr.
00:26:15And then we had, uh, Elizabeth Fox Door.
00:26:19I thought he was cheating on me.
00:26:21Okay. I can tell you was.
00:26:24When we looked at the situation that we had there, I did made the comment at one time.
00:26:29This show is almost geared for Jerry Springer.
00:26:39Hands on your head!
00:26:41Walk backwards.
00:26:43Just hold it right there. Come around.
00:26:48Here August, you're going to leave your hand. Yes, sir.
00:26:50Put your hands on your back.
00:26:52There's two kiddos in there.
00:26:53There's two kiddos in there.
00:26:55Huh?
00:26:55Huh? Huh? Huh?
00:26:56Huh?
00:26:57We decided to pull over Larry and Mandy as soon as the funeral was over.
00:27:02What's going on here, man?
00:27:03I'll tell you in a little bit.
00:27:05You got weapons or anything?
00:27:06I don't.
00:27:06Any knives or anything?
00:27:07I don't.
00:27:07Okay.
00:27:09What's your name, sir?
00:27:10Larry.
00:27:10What's that?
00:27:11Larry.
00:27:11Larry what?
00:27:12Okay.
00:27:13I think I just went completely numb.
00:27:16Like, what is happening?
00:27:22All right.
00:27:22Larry.
00:27:23Very custody.
00:27:25I personally was assigned to Larry Richmond, Sr.
00:27:29Well, Larry, why we've got everybody.
00:27:31It's not just you down here.
00:27:34Obviously, we're looking into the Robert Doar situation.
00:27:37He was gunned down in his driveway.
00:27:40What's that got to do with me?
00:27:41Well, it has to do with everybody in the family.
00:27:45We just want to, we're trying to get everybody in here and trying to see if there's just anything that
00:27:50can help us with this investigation.
00:27:52So, do you wish to talk to me about the lawyer president?
00:27:55I have no problem answering any of your questions.
00:27:57I will cooperate fully.
00:27:59Okay.
00:27:59Due to my past, I have been incarcerated.
00:28:01Sure.
00:28:02I'm on probation.
00:28:03I don't need any problems.
00:28:05Sure.
00:28:05No, I understand.
00:28:06If I'm not under arrest, please get a hold of him.
00:28:08I will come back down here and fully cooperate.
00:28:10No problems at all.
00:28:13All we're trying to do is find out if you guys know anything that could help us find this killer.
00:28:18I don't know nothing.
00:28:20I don't know nothing.
00:28:20We go out with him.
00:28:22We go out and drink.
00:28:24Outside of that there, I don't know nothing.
00:28:27They brought us down there and immediately I realized it's like I am awful close to whatever the crap is
00:28:35happening.
00:28:44You know, what?
00:28:45And we're gonna explain it to you.
00:28:46We'll get to all that.
00:28:47No, I'll be.
00:28:48Okay?
00:28:50Whatever's going on in your mind, I can guarantee you it's nothing.
00:28:54It's not a big deal at all.
00:28:56Okay?
00:28:59Where were you at when Robbie was murdered?
00:29:03Do you remember?
00:29:11When I don't know exactly when it was, can you tell me when it was?
00:29:16It was Tuesday, last Tuesday, around 7 o'clock.
00:29:24You're home?
00:29:25We go along.
00:29:26Kids there.
00:29:27Was Larry there?
00:29:29Yeah, we were all there.
00:29:32Investigators asked her where Larry was at the night of the murder.
00:29:36She reported that he was with her the entire night.
00:29:40Hey, Mandy, do you know something that we don't?
00:29:46I feel like I'm really tired right now.
00:29:49This is what you watch on TV.
00:29:53This is, this, this, you watch this happen to people on TV, not to your family.
00:29:58I think Mandy really believes in this man and believes that he can better himself.
00:30:08It's sometimes our benefit to grab all individuals that are involved in a case at the same time.
00:30:15Agent Bill Gray picked up Claire Richmond Jr. up from the pawn shop when he got off work that night
00:30:20and brought him downtown.
00:30:22I had some questions with Larry Jr. as far as stealing the firearm and giving it to his dad.
00:30:27We have two more people down here now involved in this case.
00:30:32And one is your dad.
00:30:34Okay.
00:30:35And things aren't looking so good here.
00:30:37Okay.
00:30:38What do you know about this guy?
00:30:41It came up missing
00:30:44the day of or a couple of days before I started at the pawn shop.
00:30:49That's not true.
00:30:53I've talked to the regional manager.
00:30:54I'm talking to the ATF guys.
00:30:56That's not exactly the way it's going on.
00:30:57The gun came up missing while you were an employee.
00:30:59Yeah.
00:31:00While, while, yeah.
00:31:02And I was sitting in, in the pawn shop.
00:31:06And then somebody came up and said there was a gun outside.
00:31:12And then we called it in.
00:31:15Larry Richmond Jr., he, he lies that he didn't know about the gun.
00:31:20He didn't steal the gun.
00:31:22I had some bad news for you, son.
00:31:23I think you're heading down the same path your dad's heading.
00:31:26I don't think things are going to work out too well here.
00:31:29So we just hang tight a couple of minutes and.
00:31:35To my knowledge, I don't believe that Elizabeth knew that the others were in custody.
00:31:40After the funeral was over, Detective Keene and Detective Hands came and asked me.
00:31:46They said that they had a phone of mine and they had the key to my house.
00:31:51They would like to ask a few more questions.
00:31:53Detective Keene ran the first whole part of the interview going back over what they talked
00:31:57about that night, confirming everything she said.
00:32:00Okay.
00:32:01So you get home in the four workshops and get those ready.
00:32:04They actually, I just had the oven preheating and I was getting ready to, you know, get the
00:32:13macaroni, get the mac and cheese.
00:32:14I was getting out of the cabinet and I saw the truck lights come into the driveway.
00:32:19And then I heard these popping noises.
00:32:21Then I looked out the door.
00:32:23I saw Rob at the end of the driveway, shoved the dog back, closed the door and went running
00:32:28down the driveway.
00:32:30We felt that she was hiding something.
00:32:32And then when I, I showed her the raw data from her phone download.
00:32:36Do we know who this number is right here?
00:32:40I don't recognize it.
00:32:43They, they were showing me phone numbers, but there was no name to a phone number.
00:32:48And I kept telling them, I don't know that phone number.
00:32:52Leading up to Elizabeth's interview, we had gathered cell phone records, actual cell phone
00:32:57device records.
00:32:58And we knew there was a deleted phone call right before the 911 call.
00:33:04But you can't delete it off the company records.
00:33:06And this is the company records.
00:33:08This is straight from Sprint.
00:33:32You were able to tell us down to the sense how much you paid for your pork chops earlier
00:33:36that day at Walmart.
00:33:37But you can't remember who you had a phone call with just prior to your husband getting
00:33:40executed in your driveway.
00:33:42Just didn't ring right to me at all.
00:33:44Let me finish.
00:33:45Cannot change what happened.
00:33:46But you can change it from how it goes on here now by telling the truth.
00:33:52Do you understand what I'm saying?
00:33:54I do.
00:33:55Okay.
00:33:55So take a deep breath and tell us who you talked to five minutes before your husband
00:34:00was killed in your driveway getting out of his truck in the back of the head.
00:34:06We're asking questions we know the answers to, Becky.
00:34:19This is the Evansville Police Department Adult Interview Suite.
00:34:23We have four interview rooms available to us.
00:34:27Throughout our time interviewing these subjects, we were determined that we were being lied to.
00:34:32There were inconsistencies in stories, and it took a good long while to start getting
00:34:36things sorted out where we had a good idea of what was happening.
00:34:41When you're in the interview room and they're lying, you try to never take police work personal.
00:34:45I honestly did not recognize the phone number.
00:34:48Okay.
00:34:48You just have to keep confronting them with the facts, and you just slowly work through the case.
00:34:53Just let it out.
00:34:54Just tell us the truth.
00:34:56Did you orchestrate it?
00:34:57Then what happened?
00:34:57What's your...
00:34:58Okay.
00:34:58Did you didn't orchestrate it?
00:34:59I didn't know what was going to happen.
00:35:00Tell us the truth.
00:35:00And the questioning was, had you ever deleted anything off of your phone?
00:35:05And when she says no, the information I had in my file holder at the time, I knew that was
00:35:10a lie.
00:35:11Nothing in that conversation had anything to do with hurting anybody.
00:35:15Why delete it then?
00:35:16Because I typically delete...
00:35:18I deleted the phone call.
00:35:20I delete my phone calls every time I get off the phone with somebody, unless I talk to you regularly.
00:35:28She deletes absolutely everything.
00:35:30And I know for a fact, if I were to send her, you know, I love you, Mom, she would
00:35:34keep that, and she would delete everything else.
00:35:36She will send a text message, and then she will delete it.
00:35:38I don't know why.
00:35:40If you look at the timeline of the deleted phone call, just minutes before Robbie's killed and the 911 call
00:35:46is made.
00:35:47So that's a big deal.
00:35:49So who did you talk to five minutes before your husband was gunned down in the driveway?
00:35:54Becky, we know the answer.
00:35:56So you can let us do the talking for you, or you can do the talking for yourself.
00:36:00And please tell the truth.
00:36:02So who was it?
00:36:03My sister's fiance.
00:36:05Elizabeth had deleted all of Larry Richmond Sr.'s phone calls in her phone.
00:36:11You knew.
00:36:12Not only did you know you talked to him that night, you knew you deleted it, and then you knew
00:36:16I was going to ask you about it when we came back in here.
00:36:19It's human behavior to try to protect yourself for like, oh my gosh, I'm into this, how am I going
00:36:24to get out of it?
00:36:24Maybe if I just stick with these lies.
00:36:26I didn't want you to think that I was having an affair with him because I have not had an
00:36:30affair.
00:36:31The way the interview went with Becky Fox-Door, was it a perfect interview?
00:36:35No, because we didn't get her to truly confess.
00:36:37I think it was the next best thing.
00:36:39I didn't want to say that I had talked to him because that makes it, makes it look like I
00:36:43did it.
00:36:44She was denying the phone call, admitted she denied it.
00:36:47She knew she deleted the phone call.
00:36:49She hid it from us.
00:36:50I'm still in for a minute.
00:36:54New developments tonight in the murder of a firefighter in Indiana.
00:36:58Robbie Doors' wife tonight is in jail for deleting a phone call she allegedly received before calling 911.
00:37:05That moment was a moment of, could she? Would she? Why would she? It was a whole gambit of emotion.
00:37:19Elizabeth was originally charged with the obstruction of justice. She soon was out on bond.
00:37:32Larry Junior was walking a fine line between going to prison for a very long time and not.
00:37:42And it wasn't until much later in the same evening that he knocked on the door and said,
00:37:46hey, I need to, I need to talk to investigators again because I need to tell them something.
00:37:51He tells investigators, my dad has guns at Mandy's house.
00:37:55My dad said if anything was to go down, he would bury them.
00:37:59It is said that Larry Richman Sr. had buried a tote full of guns in the backyard of Mandy's house
00:38:06where he was living at the time.
00:38:08He's even caught on video doing this.
00:38:12The detectives came across a surveillance system from the house just directly to Mandy's, Larry's fiancee's house.
00:38:20It shows Larry coming out of the house in the evening with his box under his arm and grabbing some
00:38:26type of utensil
00:38:28and going behind the garage and then coming back empty-handed.
00:38:35One morning, I wake up, I'm sitting in the living room, and all of a sudden, there are police cars
00:38:41everywhere.
00:38:43That whole block, this whole block of Sheffield was full of police cars.
00:38:48And I'm like, get up here, see what's going on.
00:38:53And they searched the whole grounds, and when they got to that fire pit,
00:38:57they started digging.
00:38:58And they almost dug every square inch back here.
00:39:03I mean, they dug everywhere.
00:39:04I'm over the fence, and I said, what's going on?
00:39:07He says, well, we're hunting for stuff.
00:39:10And then I saw some guns in the other policeman's hand, and I said, oh, that's what you're looking for.
00:39:17And he goes, yeah.
00:39:19We found several where the fire pit was.
00:39:22That box was taken to headquarters, and you could have heard a pin drop.
00:39:26They did it right.
00:39:27Our crime scene detective came in and then slowly started processing that box.
00:39:31And we're all like, please take out a Taurus judge or Taurus judge ammunition.
00:39:36I remember being in the newsroom that day and hearing on the scanner that police were at the home,
00:39:41and they had found some guns, but not the murder weapon.
00:39:45The murder weapon and Robbie Doerr's murder has never been found.
00:39:51So at this point, police still do not have a murder weapon.
00:39:54They have not named a suspect.
00:39:56So we're wondering, what is their next step?
00:39:59I found something that raised the pinnacle of all flags.
00:40:03I mean, I can't even call it a red flag.
00:40:04It's like the sirens going off.
00:40:06There was a handwritten message that said, we need to talk.
00:40:26He was my best friend.
00:40:28He was the person I called when I was having a bad day.
00:40:31He was the person I called if I had a flat tire on the side of the road,
00:40:34if I just needed to talk.
00:40:36It was him.
00:40:38When my dad passed away, we were not in a great place.
00:40:42Me not liking Becky put a very big strain on our relationship.
00:40:46I wish he would have saw it.
00:40:48I wish he would have listened to me when he said it was going too fast.
00:40:54It's a lot of I wish.
00:40:58When my mother was arrested, I was like, no, they have the wrong person.
00:41:02This can't be.
00:41:02This is the woman who's helped to raise me.
00:41:06No one ever thinks of their parent to be that person.
00:41:12The puzzle pieces kind of started to fall into place after the funeral.
00:41:16I was going through the condolence cards, and I came across one that was from my aunt Mandy.
00:41:22I didn't quite know what to think of it at first, but it was that guttural instinct that said, this
00:41:29is not right.
00:41:30Like I said, my name is Anthony.
00:41:32I need to get a hold of someone.
00:41:34And I didn't have anyone to get a hold of except for one detective.
00:42:07I was going through condolence cards.
00:42:08He said it to my mother.
00:42:09He helped.
00:42:10He gripped that thing all the way up until it passed into my mother's hand.
00:42:13I don't know why he was trying to reach out that way.
00:42:16It doesn't make sense to me.
00:42:18He was standing right there when he handed it to us, so he could have just said what he needed
00:42:25to say right then.
00:42:30That day, they asked me if I knew that he had had criminal history, and I said no.
00:42:35And they told me everything that he had done.
00:42:37That's kind of odd that we have a murder, 20-year sentence, he's out for a year and a half,
00:42:43and then another murder happens.
00:42:45Nobody knew that he had a criminal past.
00:42:48My aunt Mandy brought a convicted felon to a Christian household and had dinner with everybody and didn't tell a
00:42:58single person that he had just gotten out of prison for murder.
00:43:03On that piece of paper was a phone that Larry Richmond, Sr. was in possession of at the time of
00:43:11his arrest.
00:43:12He got that phone from a person named Laura Riggle.
00:43:17During our investigation, we did talk to Laura Riggle.
00:43:20We would like to know more about the nature of yours and Larry's relationship.
00:43:26Larry and I got to know each other more, I should say.
00:43:31It was in December before Christmas we started talking.
00:43:34Then we actually started seeing each other in January.
00:43:37You said seeing each other, you mean like going on dates and stuff like that?
00:43:40Okay.
00:43:40And I do know he lives with Mandy.
00:43:42Uh-huh.
00:43:43She does not know.
00:43:46So what was going to happen between him and Mandy?
00:43:49They were breaking up.
00:43:54Through the course of our investigation, there were several women who were romantically involved with Larry Richmond, Sr.
00:44:02around the time of the murder in February of 2019.
00:44:05What about him? Is that the women he messes up with?
00:44:07I didn't know about the others.
00:44:18The first night that we had contact with Mandy, she was a mess.
00:44:21I don't know. I'm not a troublemaker. I don't know.
00:44:26And then the next time we had kind of built a little bit of a rapport with her.
00:44:31So let's go back further to the day that Robbie gets killed.
00:44:44Mandy, why did you tell investigators that Larry was with you at home that night?
00:44:49Is Larry there? Yeah, we were all there.
00:44:53We were all there.
00:44:54Okay, it's Larry.
00:44:55Mm-hmm.
00:44:57Because he was with me all the time. He was there every night. I didn't know what night they were
00:45:02talking about.
00:45:03The night of the shooting. I mean, but I didn't know what night that was.
00:45:10But that's what they were talking to me about.
00:45:11I thought they meant, did he come home that night? Yes, he came home that night.
00:45:15I knew this was bad. But my first inclination wasn't, oh, what'd you do?
00:45:22So they reveal, they tell you a lot of what's going on.
00:45:25Oh, yes.
00:45:25They reveal some things to you.
00:45:26Oh, yes.
00:45:28I thought he was cheating on me.
00:45:30Okay. I can tell you us, with a lot of women, and we've had, one just walked out of here.
00:45:35And we had one in here last night. Okay? So you're not the only one in this trick bag.
00:45:41So you had another life going on.
00:45:43Yeah. Girlfriends.
00:45:44Plural. Yeah. You don't think he was using you?
00:45:48No. For what? For what? I'm a train wreck. I got...
00:45:58This heart's about all I have to offer.
00:46:01Okay. Do you have any other suspicions that Larry and your sister had anything going on?
00:46:08Okay. Your sister is in custody for deleting a phone call
00:46:12that was very important.
00:46:14And there's a five-minute phone call
00:46:17right before Robbie's murder.
00:46:19I mean, minutes before Robbie's murder.
00:46:21And guess who that came from?
00:46:24Larry.
00:46:28What do you think's going on between Larry and your sister?
00:46:32I thought we went out with him three times. That's what I thought.
00:46:37Were your sister, Becky, and Larry having an affair?
00:46:41That is the word.
00:46:43After the murder, Amanda Fillmore was never a suspect. Police found her to be telling the truth.
00:46:50Mandy was never charged with anything in this case. Mandy was deeply in love with Larry Richmond,
00:46:55senior in her mind that Larry had nothing to do with this. Looking back, it was very apparent.
00:47:02My mom had something to do with it. When one of your first question is, after your husband dies,
00:47:08what about his pension?
00:47:09I call her, uh, in a fit of anger, a bartering.
00:47:32It was strange being in the house by myself.
00:47:36I'm in Rob's house, who is no longer alive.
00:47:41And my mother is in question now for his murder.
00:47:46I felt terrible about even just being in his house.
00:47:49Why am I in his house and he's not?
00:47:51It's our top story tonight. Charges have been dropped against the wife
00:47:55of a murdered Evansville firefighter seven months after they were filed.
00:47:59Elizabeth Fox Doerr was, uh, charged with obstruction of justice.
00:48:04My mother did finally get released from jail.
00:48:08She lived with me.
00:48:10She and I had some very tense conversations.
00:48:13Like, why did I believe that you did this?
00:48:15I don't know, Nathan.
00:48:17Well, why would they ever?
00:48:19Nathan, I don't know.
00:48:24The night of,
00:48:26she talked to me about his pension.
00:48:28Will I get any of it?
00:48:29How do I get a hold of it?
00:48:34The day after the murder,
00:48:36we were told by a spouse of a firefighter.
00:48:39She had showed up at the firehouse asking about his pension.
00:48:44Yes, I did ask about the pension after he was killed because I had so many people asking me
00:48:51about his pension and his life insurance.
00:48:53That's why I went where I thought that I could find those answers.
00:48:58The fact that she was there the next day inquiring about a pension, that was definitely on our radar.
00:49:08Larry Richmond Jr.
00:49:10told us a lot about Larry Sr.
00:49:11I'm going to give you the floor here for a second, and I want you to tell me anything that
00:49:16you left out from the other night.
00:49:17Do you think your dad's involved in the murder of Robbie?
00:49:20I hope not.
00:49:23As far as Junior, it all didn't come out at one time.
00:49:27We didn't know about the affair until later.
00:49:29Has he ever talked about Becky before?
00:49:32He said one time that they went out to Pistons, and like, yes, Becky was drunk, and like, the firefighter
00:49:40dude was there too,
00:49:41and they was just dancing, and doing all this, and Becky kept looking at him.
00:49:47He said she was cute and fine.
00:49:50Dog, that's your girl's sister.
00:49:53What the f*** are you doing?
00:49:55I was like, did you f***ing Becky?
00:49:58He was like, no.
00:50:00And then I asked him again.
00:50:02He was like, man, I had to.
00:50:08I was like, dog, you're a damn dad.
00:50:11And Evansville father and son are facing federal weapons charges.
00:50:15Junior, he did something terrible by stealing a gun, but he did take responsibility for it, and eventually pleaded guilty.
00:50:22He didn't have any part in the murder.
00:50:24Larry Sr. was convicted for possession of a handgun by a felon and having obliterated serial numbers.
00:50:30He was in custody, so we just kind of say, hey, let's slow everything down.
00:50:34He's not a threat to society.
00:50:39I thought it would be a simple, speedy process, and here we are one year later.
00:50:48The police, it didn't feel like they were making headway on what happened, and that's when my anger started to
00:50:55really set in.
00:50:59My mother got another boyfriend very quickly, and then she very quickly after that, almost like the next day, got
00:51:08another boyfriend.
00:51:09I have had several strong words about my mother in private, talking with a therapist, with police.
00:51:32My oldest son, Nathan, misunderstood the situation.
00:51:38I was not engaged to a man after Rob died.
00:51:42I did have somebody ask me to marry them, but I told them that I didn't think that I would
00:51:48ever get married again.
00:51:50Mom, was that on your hand?
00:51:52She was, oh, nothing.
00:51:53I called her in a fit of anger, a murdering.
00:51:58To her wife?
00:51:59I said to her wife.
00:52:04I believe it was a year into the case, lead investigator Blake Keene did a press conference.
00:52:11It's the person of interest in this case.
00:52:13He identified Larry Richmond Sr. as a person of interest.
00:52:1841-year-old Edmondsville resident Larry Holly Richmond Sr.
00:52:21Richmond Sr. had a relationship with the Doerr family at the time Robert was executed.
00:52:25We were pleading for the public to, if they knew any information, to call in.
00:52:30There was the news conference, and then we didn't hear much at all after that.
00:52:33I'm glad they have a person of interest.
00:52:36But, you know, where do we go from here?
00:52:40There's been a big development in this case.
00:52:43An inmate who was locked up with Larry Sr. told investigators that Larry Sr. confessed to killing Robby.
00:52:50Muhammad reached out to the Edmondsville Police Department.
00:52:52He reported that Sr. and him had confided in each other.
00:52:56They were bunkmates.
00:52:59This is Detective Keene.
00:53:01He named Detective Lewis.
00:53:03It is August 25th, around 1643 hours.
00:53:08I'm here with Muhammad.
00:53:11Who are you talking about?
00:53:12Larry, you call me Richman.
00:53:14I'll be richman, man.
00:53:17He mentioned he killed a firefighter in Edmondsville, Indiana.
00:53:22He said he killed a firefighter in front of his house at night time.
00:53:30He had it all affair with her.
00:53:34He said if they killed him, if they give him the firefighter, he said the black beneficiary will be like
00:53:38him.
00:53:42It appeared that the information from Muhammad was somewhat accurate, according to our theory of the case.
00:53:49There was information that was not shared publicly that was known in what he had reported.
00:53:57How is this cell person supposed to know that we're having an affair?
00:54:01Did he witness it?
00:54:02Or are we just grasping at straws?
00:54:05I never had an affair with Larry Richman Sr., never.
00:54:10There was nothing between us.
00:54:12Shortly after Larry Richman Sr. is named a person of interest in this case,
00:54:16investigators want to get a hold of his cell phone to see if it could hold any clues.
00:54:21Our hypothesis is that Larry Richman Sr. had his phone on him,
00:54:25and that the location data can put him at the scene of the crime at 7.05 p.m.
00:54:31Unfortunately, we didn't have that information.
00:54:34Larry Richman Sr. did not want to provide a pass-go to the phone.
00:54:38There was frustration.
00:54:39The family was frustrated.
00:54:40We were frustrated.
00:54:41We felt like we were close,
00:54:43and you just needed this one big break to really push this case forward.
00:55:07Where I was a firefighter,
00:55:08it's not the kind of case that just goes cold.
00:55:11Everybody wants an answer.
00:55:12It was very trying.
00:55:14It's frustrating.
00:55:15It's heartbreaking.
00:55:17It feels like an eternity.
00:55:34When Larry Richman Sr. was taken into custody on March 4th of 2019...
00:55:40I'll let somebody else tell you that.
00:55:42We seized two phones from him.
00:55:46We got search warrants for those phones,
00:55:49but what ultimately slowed us down was we didn't have a passcode for Larry's iPhone.
00:55:54I'm John Carter.
00:55:55I'm a criminal investigator with the High Tech Crime Unit
00:55:58out of the Vandenberg County Prosecutor's Office.
00:56:00The equipment that the Evansville Police Department had at the time,
00:56:04you had to have a passcode in order to get the information from the phone,
00:56:07which is where we took over with our new tools and techniques to acquire that passcode.
00:56:15The computer system just runs an algorithm of passwords and we have no say in how long that is.
00:56:22Those algorithms can take seconds.
00:56:24We've had phones that have taken up to two years.
00:56:27I believe in this particular case, it was anywhere between six to eight months.
00:56:32I remember that day well that John called me and said,
00:56:36hey, we got into Larry Sr.'s phone.
00:56:38We have the content.
00:56:40Utilizing the digital evidence that we discovered from his phone,
00:56:44we were able to build a bigger picture of what had occurred that night.
00:56:51In the six o'clock hour, Larry Richman Sr.'s phone is all within that area of the door residence,
00:56:58as if he's just slithering, snaking around.
00:57:03There's foot traffic and then eventually in the alley from 631 to 639.
00:57:09This guy is able to be in the alley at the exact time a fireman comes home.
00:57:16Shortly after, he's talking to Elizabeth on the phone at 646 to 651.
00:57:23In the interview with Becky Fox-Door, we got her to admit that,
00:57:27yes, I told him he would be home shortly.
00:57:31We don't know where Larry's location was between 652 and 714
00:57:37because his phone is powered off.
00:57:39It's not until you actually came to this alley and saw it with your own eyes,
00:57:44you can really understand now where he was.
00:57:55This is the path that Robbie took the last moments of his life.
00:57:59He would have turned north here on Oakley to get to his house.
00:58:02This was not a normal time for Robbie to be coming home.
00:58:05He was picking up his shift for someone else,
00:58:07which was also important because it meant he came home at night.
00:58:10Normally, his shift would dictate that he would work and come home in the morning.
00:58:15And there's only one person that would know that Robbie's on his way home
00:58:19or what time he's expected home, and that's Elizabeth.
00:58:25As far as her cooking that night and preparing dinner for Robbie,
00:58:29in my personal opinion, Robbie Door is never going to eat those pork chops that night.
00:58:33I truly believe that this timeline was set up.
00:58:36The fact is this.
00:58:37She's at home.
00:58:39She's making dinner.
00:58:41There's someone waiting, Larry, with a gun.
00:58:45My dad pulls into a driveway,
00:58:47and he literally, quite literally runs out of his shoes to get away.
00:58:56To get away.
00:58:59I don't think his door was even shut before shots started going off.
00:59:04I don't know how to explain Larry Sr.,
00:59:08the evidence, digital, of him being around the house.
00:59:14I don't know how to explain that.
00:59:16I do know that his mother lives very close by, like, I think, a street over.
00:59:22All I know is I did not know he was around the house.
00:59:26I think that she 100% knows what happened on that conversation with Larry.
00:59:45The night that Rob got murdered, Larry said he was going to go to his mom's house and move the
00:59:51furniture.
00:59:51Long story short, I get there, he's not there, he's gone to run an errand for his mother.
00:59:59We had a residence here that heard the shooting.
01:00:03They heard all five shots and stepped out onto their front porch
01:00:07and watched a subject sprint from one side of the street to the other
01:00:13and disappearing between homes and businesses.
01:00:20At 7.11 p.m., video surveillance shows that he's arrived at Circle K,
01:00:26and he powers his phone back up while he's at Circle K at 7.14 p.m.
01:00:30And once we reviewed that video surveillance, we noticed, you know, it's February, it's cold,
01:00:35and Larry's only wearing some shoes, some jeans, and a sleeveless t-shirt.
01:00:40We thought that was a little odd, but, you know,
01:00:43it seemed to us that Larry didn't have a care in the world.
01:00:46We never stop on cases, and especially on a murder case.
01:00:51We had to take all of the different pieces,
01:00:54provide what our theory was, essentially, and then allow a jury to decide.
01:00:59A short while ago, Larry Richmond Sr. and Elizabeth Foxdoor
01:01:02were charged with the murder of Robbie.
01:01:04When they finally told me they were going to charge both of them with murder,
01:01:07I was like, well, all right, let's go. We've got this.
01:01:11It absolutely led our news that night.
01:01:14Foxdoor is charged with murder alongside Larry Richmond Sr.
01:01:19I didn't do it. That is the truth. I didn't do it.
01:01:24If you're asking me if I was shot and killed Robbie Doran, no, I did not.
01:01:28Your son says you smashed that talking about that case.
01:01:32Never. Come on.
01:01:33Never. Never happened. Never happened.
01:01:36Oh, I was very surprised to be charged with murder
01:01:39and conspiracy to commit murder. I was shot.
01:01:44They don't want you to listen to the truth.
01:01:49I felt like I just listened to a screenplay of a crime novel
01:01:54that was based entirely on fiction.
01:02:08Elizabeth Foxdoor is charged with murder
01:02:10and conspiring with Larry Richmond to commit that murder.
01:02:14Her trial is scheduled to be heard first.
01:02:16She's pleaded not guilty.
01:02:18If she's convicted, she could face up to life in prison.
01:02:23My name is Mark Phillips and I am lead counsel in the trial involving our client, Becky Foxdoor.
01:02:29My name is Rob Phillips and I'm the co-counsel in the case of Becky Foxdoor.
01:02:34You have heard supposition
01:02:37that there was a conversation between Larry and Becky about a murder.
01:02:43And that's not true.
01:02:45I'm Diana Merce. I'm the Vandenberg County Prosecutor.
01:02:47This was the first murder case that I took on as the elected prosecutor, so the pressure was on.
01:02:53I didn't intend for any of this to happen.
01:02:56This is what the defendant told detectives who were questioning her that night about the death of her husband.
01:03:01Becky Foxdoor was the co-conspirator, not the shooter.
01:03:05And so in a conspiracy case, you have to prove a meeting of the minds.
01:03:09And, you know, you're doing that with circumstantial evidence.
01:03:11They have a phone conversation around the time of the murder.
01:03:14It lasts for four minutes and 18 seconds.
01:03:16And then he turns his phone off.
01:03:18This one's completely black with no data at all.
01:03:22Around 7, 12 p.m., Larry Richmond, Sr. pulls up in a Ford Taurus.
01:03:27And soon after, enters the store and then leaves.
01:03:31Just 15 minutes before Robbie Doerr was ambushed and killed,
01:03:35the defendant spoke with Larry Richmond, Sr. on the phone.
01:03:38As soon as the defendant was finished talking, she deleted that phone call.
01:03:45The only thing that she did was not remember the deletion of a call
01:03:49and that that somehow morphed into this conspiracy theory.
01:03:55By that time, did you delete Larry's phone number?
01:03:57It is a habit for me to delete phone calls because Larry's not a person I normally talk to, so
01:04:02I delete it.
01:04:03It's ridiculous that it's about a phone call that I took and I deleted.
01:04:10The defense says there's no evidence suggesting their client planned the killing.
01:04:13And today they tried to hammer that point home by grilling the original detective in the case.
01:04:18There was a phone conversation that you asked Becky about at some point, correct?
01:04:23Correct.
01:04:24And you allege it's with Larry Richmond, Sr., right?
01:04:27It is, yes.
01:04:28Is that correct?
01:04:29Yep.
01:04:29Okay.
01:04:30Yes.
01:04:30You have no idea what they talked about, do you?
01:04:32No.
01:04:32And you know who initiated that call, don't you?
01:04:35He did.
01:04:36In fact, in your investigation, you don't have any evidence that Becky Durr ever initiated a phone conversation
01:04:42of any kind with Larry Richmond, Sr., correct?
01:04:46Correct.
01:04:47Fox Door and Richmond, Sr. may have been romantically involved.
01:04:50She has photos with him.
01:04:52She spent holidays with him.
01:04:54And they even went on a double date with her sister and Robbie Door.
01:05:00There was a dramatic moment at the end of the day today.
01:05:03The son of co-defendant Larry Richmond, Sr., he took the stand.
01:05:06Larry Jr. was a good witness.
01:05:08He didn't want his father bringing him down.
01:05:10And he knew if he didn't tell the truth that it would.
01:05:14Do you know the defendant in this case, Elizabeth Fox Door, have you ever met her?
01:05:19Yes.
01:05:19She got in the vehicle and that's the first time you saw her?
01:05:22Mm-hmm.
01:05:23And did anything happen before she got out of the car?
01:05:26They kissed.
01:05:27They kissed?
01:05:27Mm-hmm.
01:05:28And was it a mutual kiss or could you tell?
01:05:31Yes, they both went in.
01:05:33I did not have an affair with him.
01:05:35I had no relationship with him.
01:05:38His relationship was with my sister.
01:05:41Larry Richmond, Jr. took the stand and told a story about seeing his father kiss Becky behind
01:05:47Robbie Door's home in approximately March of 2018.
01:05:52And if there's evidence in this trial that she didn't even live there in March of 2018,
01:05:58that put a dent in your story, wouldn't it?
01:06:00Yes.
01:06:01You didn't know who she was before your dad got out of prison, correct?
01:06:07I may have had my time dates.
01:06:08No, I didn't ask you that.
01:06:10Is that your sworn testimony here today?
01:06:13Yes.
01:06:14Larry Richmond, Sr. hadn't even been released from prison at that point.
01:06:18Not only that, Becky Fox Door wasn't even living with Robbie Door at that point.
01:06:23The prosecution inquired about whether Fox Door might have been motivated by financial gain.
01:06:28Raise your right hand.
01:06:30Did your mother ever talk to you about the firefighter pension after the murder of Robbie Door?
01:06:35Yes.
01:06:36When's the first time she brought that conversation up?
01:06:39From my remembrance, almost the same night.
01:06:43And how many times did you say that she talked to you about it?
01:06:48We had a conversation about it daily, and I got frustrated several times, and I was like,
01:06:54Mom, there are procedures we have to go through to get to that point.
01:06:58There were times it looked as if, like, someone had just, like, gut-punched her.
01:07:03It was sad to see this woman you grew up with sitting there.
01:07:09Her hair wasn't done like she normally would do it.
01:07:12Her makeup wasn't done.
01:07:13It was different.
01:07:15And I think it made it a little bit harder for me to be on the stand with her in
01:07:23the room looking the way that she did.
01:07:24When Nathan started testifying, it was like he flipped a switch and just turned into somebody else.
01:07:33It was pretty hard to watch.
01:07:35You know your mom was not a beneficiary for purposes of any financial benefit, correct?
01:07:41I don't know who's beneficiary on anything.
01:07:44If you were to learn that your mom had no financial interest as a result of Robbie's death, would that
01:07:50surprise you?
01:07:50I mean, she, no.
01:07:54I was not motivated to kill him for his pension.
01:07:57I didn't kill him.
01:07:59Rob and I hadn't even talked about life insurance or pension or any of that.
01:08:04We were just being married.
01:08:08They don't want you to listen to the truth.
01:08:12I felt like I just listened to a screenplay of a crime novel that was based entirely on fiction.
01:08:20I ask you to return the only verdict that's justified by the evidence in this case, murder and conspiracy to
01:08:27commit murder.
01:08:28With that, you may begin your deliberation.
01:08:30All right.
01:08:32As prosecutors, you know who's guilty, right?
01:08:35But that's not good enough.
01:08:36The standard is beyond a reasonable doubt.
01:08:38When the jury returned a verdict, I can just remember being out on the set and the producer telling me
01:08:45in my ear, we're going to air it live.
01:08:46I close my eyes and tears just start flowing.
01:09:07State of Indiana v. Elizabeth, Joanne, Fox, Doerr, verdict.
01:09:11The courtroom was tense in the moments leading up to the verdict reading.
01:09:15And after more than four hours, the jury reached a decision.
01:09:18We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of count one.
01:09:23I held my aunt's hand and I held Nathan's hand and I closed my eyes and tears just start flowing.
01:09:31We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of count two.
01:09:35Like that is all we could have ever hoped for.
01:09:40Thank God this is done.
01:09:42Thank God, Dad, can rest peacefully.
01:09:47When I heard the guilty verdict, I couldn't believe it.
01:09:50They got it wrong.
01:09:53They got it wrong.
01:09:57And all I could think was, this is my life you're playing with.
01:10:06Becky would later be sentenced by a judge, 90 years in prison.
01:10:11So basically, she will be spending the rest of her life behind bars.
01:10:14All right.
01:10:16It's horrible.
01:10:18I mean, I'm not guilty.
01:10:24There are people that are guilty and say they're guilty that get way less time than I'm looking at.
01:10:38The next time that she is going to be a part of the free world, we'll be in a funeral
01:10:43in a graveyard somewhere.
01:10:46Everybody just has this idea that she's this villainous woman that was out for money.
01:10:51And I want more people to see the actual good side of her, the kind of person that she actually
01:10:57is.
01:11:03It's awful to watch people that you love suffer their consequences.
01:11:10And do bad things.
01:11:11Mm-hmm.
01:11:14Do you believe your sister Becky plotted to kill Robbie?
01:11:18I don't think that it matters what I think.
01:11:20You don't have an opinion about whether Becky and Larry plotted to kill Robbie?
01:11:25The rational part of my brain says it would appear such, but I think the irrational heart is still begging
01:11:34the universe for a different answer.
01:11:37Police say back in 2019, Richmond conspired with Elizabeth Fox Doerr to murder Robert Doerr in the driveway of his
01:11:45home.
01:11:45His trial in the murder case is set to begin in December.
01:11:49I got a call from the seat public defender.
01:11:53They were looking for someone who was qualified to handle a life without parole case.
01:11:57She sent me an email and said, would I be interested?
01:12:00I said, well, this might be one of the only times I get a case like this, so let's give
01:12:04it a shot.
01:12:05The murder trial of Larry Richmond, Sr.
01:12:08He's the man accused of shooting and killing Evansville firefighter Robert Doerr.
01:12:12During Becky's case, we heard all this testimony and saw a lot of the evidence at that time,
01:12:16so we knew what to expect going into this one.
01:12:18The whole conceit of the state's case is that this was a murder for hire.
01:12:22Day two of testimony in a high-profile murder trial in Evansville.
01:12:27Today, jurors heard from someone at the center of the case.
01:12:30You know, we're relying heavily on witness testimony.
01:12:33So, Mandy, the night of, where is Larry Richmond?
01:12:36Larry's trial, what was that like?
01:12:40Just sad.
01:12:42And the essence of what you said at the stand, what was it?
01:12:47That I didn't know where he was.
01:12:49That you didn't know where he was?
01:12:50That he wasn't at his mom's.
01:12:55Like I said, he came back so fast, I didn't think anything of it.
01:12:58So they tell you the phone is pinging at the scene of the crime,
01:13:02and then you see him going into that gas station.
01:13:05What conclusions do you come to?
01:13:08He was going to get cigarettes.
01:13:10I think that she was having problems, and maybe still is,
01:13:15grasping that he did this.
01:13:17But I just found her to be just honest and open
01:13:21and able to tell the jury her story because she was telling the truth.
01:13:25Larry was never at the Fox Doors' house during the time of the shooting.
01:13:30He was at his mom's house the entire time.
01:13:32Larry was involved with a lot of women, so his phone was constantly ringing.
01:13:36And so mom had said, hey, turn your phone off.
01:13:39Spend time with me.
01:13:40And then he goes to get gas, turns his phone back on,
01:13:43and then we see him at the gas station.
01:13:46This is a circumstantial evidence case,
01:13:48and the evidence was just piled up high against their client.
01:13:52The fate of an Evansville man is now in the hands of a jury.
01:13:55I think they deliberated for around 11 hours or so.
01:14:00We, the jury, find the defendant.
01:14:02Larry Olley Richmond, guilty of murder.
01:14:07I was hurt.
01:14:08I was sad for Larry because I had, that was not what I had envisioned.
01:14:13I had not envisioned hearing one word.
01:14:16I had envisioned hearing two words.
01:14:18This is, this is the end,
01:14:20and we can finally be able to put this past us
01:14:22and be able to just grieve the way we need to
01:14:26instead of it being thrown in our face constantly.
01:14:29The man convicted of killing an Evansville firefighter
01:14:32seven years ago will spend the rest of his life in prison.
01:14:38Some days I'm mad in hell.
01:14:40It was seven years ago.
01:14:42I have to, like, sometimes I just have to put it in the past
01:14:45and be like, okay, this is where we are now.
01:14:48He does not say he does it.
01:14:50He, he to this day did not do it.
01:14:52Well, then you understand he's lying to you.
01:14:55Right.
01:14:56And himself.
01:14:57People watching this are going to ask,
01:14:59what keeps her connected to Larry
01:15:02after everything you've been through?
01:15:15After everything happened, my mom was angry,
01:15:17but she still loved him,
01:15:19and I don't think she has ever stopped loving him.
01:15:23People watching this are going to ask,
01:15:25what keeps her connected to Larry
01:15:28after everything you've been through?
01:15:31I think over the course of time,
01:15:35I've been through so many ups and downs
01:15:37with do I believe it, don't I believe it,
01:15:40and then I'm talking to him,
01:15:41and he's convinced me that he didn't do it,
01:15:43and then I get more information.
01:15:45And it's just, I've gone back and forth
01:15:47so many times that I've just decided
01:15:50that he's another human being
01:15:52that God has given me to love.
01:15:54Is he seeing anyone else?
01:15:56I don't know, probably.
01:15:58I hear that's what the inmates do,
01:16:01but I have no way of knowing.
01:16:03I don't ever know.
01:16:04Would that matter to you?
01:16:06No.
01:16:06So you're still sort of together.
01:16:09You're still...
01:16:09Yeah.
01:16:11Well, yeah.
01:16:11Engaged.
01:16:12Yeah, but, yeah.
01:16:14But I'm also...
01:16:18God, I just feel so stupid when I talk about it,
01:16:22but I get what I need from him.
01:16:27From Larry?
01:16:28Yeah.
01:16:29He wants to talk to me in the morning.
01:16:32He wants me to tell him when I'm home,
01:16:34save from work.
01:16:37He has begged me not to leave him.
01:16:40He says he needs me,
01:16:42and I like, I want to be loved and wanted and needed
01:16:45and all the things.
01:16:47You regret bringing him into your family?
01:16:49I mean, yeah, look at us now.
01:16:59This whole case is built upon one thing.
01:17:02A deleted phone call.
01:17:05I don't know if my life would have unfolded differently
01:17:07if I had just told him about the phone call.
01:17:11They still...
01:17:12I think, honestly,
01:17:13I think I'd still be in the same spot.
01:17:16They would still think that we had had an affair.
01:17:19They would still think that, you know,
01:17:22I conspired.
01:17:24They would...
01:17:25They grabbed a hold of me and didn't let go.
01:17:31Becky was loving.
01:17:32Becky was love.
01:17:34You know?
01:17:35Becky's not evil.
01:17:37Becky's not a monster.
01:17:38Becky's not all these things everybody thinks she is.
01:17:42Do you talk to her?
01:17:43No.
01:17:44I mean, I wrote her a letter and I told her that
01:17:48if it was true that I forgave her
01:17:50and that if it wasn't true that I was sorry
01:17:52this was all happening.
01:17:58This is still very hard to take.
01:18:00I mean, all of this.
01:18:03This...
01:18:08To realize that this is my life.
01:18:12Rob was a sweetheart.
01:18:13He was a good person to everybody.
01:18:20He became my best friend.
01:18:26And...
01:18:30I miss him every day.
01:18:43At the Evansville Fire Department,
01:18:45their newest fire truck then,
01:18:46they dedicated that in honor of Robbie.
01:18:51He has a fire engine
01:18:52that will do what he used to do,
01:18:55roll up to the scenes now
01:18:57and protect people
01:18:58and save people's lives.
01:19:02Dad can finally rest.
01:19:05He deserved more than what he got.
01:19:08He deserved not for that to happen.
01:19:15I'll never be able to call him.
01:19:17I'll never get to hear his voice.
01:19:19What is that, man?
01:19:23I'll never get to hug him again.
01:19:28He should still be here
01:19:30with mine and Lindsay's kids
01:19:34to be a grandparent to these children.
01:19:39And...
01:19:39they're missing out.
01:19:43We're missing out.
01:19:48It's now yours.
01:19:50I know.
01:19:51It's big.
01:19:58A family still remembering.
01:20:00And we should point out
01:20:01that Robbie's wife, Becky,
01:20:02had her appeal denied.
01:20:03Her relationship with son, Nathaniel,
01:20:05remained strained.
01:20:06He tells us he will never visit her in prison.
01:20:08Meanwhile, David,
01:20:09convicted gunman Larry Richman, Sr.,
01:20:12declined our interview request
01:20:13but tells us he will appeal his conviction.
01:20:17That's our program for tonight.
01:20:18Thanks for watching.
01:20:19I'm Deborah Roberts.
