An investigation by CNN has uncovered that a Russian covert fleet ship, known as the Ursa Major, was transporting two components for nuclear submarine reactors intended for North Korea when it was sunk 60 miles off the coast of Spain in December 2024. Spanish authorities verified that the captain of the ship referred to the cargo as nuclear reactor casings for submarines. New evidence indicates that the vessel was brought down by a NATO-standard torpedo. Had the reactors been delivered, they would have greatly enhanced North Korea's ability to operate nuclear submarines that could reach US territory.

00:04A Russian Shadow Fleet vessel secretly carrying nuclear submarine reactor components to North Korea
00:09was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. And a CNN investigation now suggests the weapon used
00:15was a NATO-standard torpedo. The URSA Major, disguised as a routine cargo ship,
00:21departed Russia in December 2024, carrying what its manifest listed as cranes and manhole covers.
00:28Spanish investigators confirmed the ship's captain told them the cargo was actually two
00:33nuclear reactor casings for submarines, destined for the North Korean port of Rahsaan.
00:38Three explosions tore through the ship's engine room 60 miles off the Spanish coast.
00:43Two crew members were killed. Fourteen were rescued. The reactors, if they had reached Kim Jong-un,
00:49would have dramatically accelerated North Korea's ability to deploy nuclear-powered submarines
00:55capable of striking the United States. The URSA Major now rests at 2,500 meters on the Mediterranean floor.
