Health authorities in Illinois are looking into a local hantavirus case in Winnebago County that is completely unrelated to the outbreak on a cruise ship. The individual is thought to have contracted the North American variant while cleaning a home overrun by rodents. In contrast to the Andes strain from the cruise ship, the North American variant does not transmit between humans. The CDC is providing support for confirmatory tests and encouraging Americans to take necessary precautions when dealing with areas that show signs of rodent activity.
