00:00When did we lose our way?
00:04Consumed by the shadow, swallowed whole by the darkness.
00:08Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at problematic plot lines and
00:13moments from this beloved teen drama that make us cringe today.
00:17What are you talking about, Harry?
00:22Um, we got married last night.
00:26Number 10, Dan Marries Rachel.
00:28I didn't really have Buzz in mind.
00:31I know, but that's why you have me.
00:34The show often treats romances interchangeably,
00:37with multiple characters involved despite the obvious emotional fallout.
00:42However, fans today draw the line with uncomfortable age gaps,
00:46especially one with such a messy backstory.
00:48That's what happens with Rachel and Dan, who are married by the seventh season.
00:53It was a good show today.
00:55I think we might have reached some people.
00:57Do you think it was a good show?
01:00I'll let you know after I see the ratings.
01:02Considering Rachel made the moves on both Lucas and Nathan back in the day,
01:06her sudden status as their stepmother has a certain ick factor that's hard to overlook.
01:11Although she's only using Dan to elevate her newfound status,
01:15the latter clearly sees her as the love of his life,
01:18making the relationship come across as both weird and problematic.
01:22I love you.
01:24I know, baby.
01:26Wear your gray suit tonight.
01:28You always look good in that suit.
01:30Number 9, Brooke's Attack.
01:32Hi, it's Brooke.
01:34I know this probably seems out of the blue,
01:37but do you think you could meet me at my store?
01:40Although we can appreciate the message of empowerment through adversity in this storyline,
01:44it's execution has not aged well.
01:46More specifically, the way everyone reacts to Brooke's attack.
01:50After she's left bruised by Xavier Daniels, Brooke pretends she fell down the stairs.
01:55Rather than question the obvious red flags of her injuries,
01:58her friends simply downplay them.
02:01Oh, I'm so sorry.
02:02No, it's okay.
02:04Really, I'm too sore to hug.
02:06Okay.
02:08Congratulations.
02:10Thanks.
02:11Peyton's reaction, in particular, doesn't sit well with fans,
02:15as she quickly switches back to talking about her relationship with Lucas.
02:18While she does deliberately withhold the truth,
02:21the lack of concern and sympathy from Brooke's friends makes this arc come across as insensitive and dismissive.
02:27You really are a good person for me.
02:30And what do I get out of it?
02:34Great friends, great life, good karma.
02:38Number eight, Peyton's stalking.
02:40So this is a lot better than the other day when you slammed the door in my face.
02:44After you hung up on me when I called?
02:46Well, you caught me off guard.
02:47And you think I was expecting you to show up on my front porch?
02:49According to your podcast, yes.
02:51This storyline took a strange turn that no one could have seen coming.
02:55To start with, Peyton reunites with her half-brother, Derek.
02:58But the more things progress, the creepier Derek begins to behave with the sister.
03:02Eventually, we learn that the man posing as Derek is actually a stalker named Ian Banks,
03:07who posed as her half-brother to get close to her.
03:09You better get out of here. I'm calling the cops.
03:13I don't think so.
03:15You see, you dropped your cell phone on the porch.
03:17And the home line, well, it's dead.
03:21Using a familial connection as a setup for a deeply inappropriate angle
03:25hasn't sat well with fans over the years.
03:28Many have also voiced disapproval of the show's justifying Banks' actions
03:31through Peyton's resemblance to his deceased girlfriend.
03:34Instead of making him look sympathetic,
03:36it comes across as a cheap excuse to downplay his behavior.
03:40You're just a deranged, pathetic psycho.
03:44And I never, ever want to see you again, okay?
03:48Number seven, all the fat shaming.
03:51Let me give you a party.
03:57Yeah.
04:00There you go.
04:01As a product of its time,
04:03many of the characters' traits and mannerisms just wouldn't fly today.
04:06Chief among them is how casually they body shame each other.
04:10Brooke and Rachel frequently trade barbs about weight,
04:13throwing out hurtful words as punchlines.
04:16This coming from the girl who put up posters of me,
04:18circa 200 pounds, all over school.
04:21Consider it payback.
04:22See you at home, roommate.
04:24However, the most uncomfortable case comes from Mouth's weight gain.
04:28The arc plays out like an excuse to make fun of his appearance,
04:31with one scene entirely dedicated to Millie shaming him on live TV.
04:35Millie said her viewers did agree with her that you could shed a few pounds.
04:38Well, that's her fan base.
04:39My fan base disagrees.
04:41Yeah, you know what, Millie?
04:42That was kind of messed up how you called your boy fat on TV.
04:45The way the show frames it as an inherent flaw is its biggest issue,
04:49with plus-sized characters routinely treated as unappealing by everyone around them.
04:54Number six, everything about Nanny Carrie.
04:57Looks like my sucky plan is going to be a smashing success.
05:09It's hard to pick just one moment when it comes to Nanny Carrie,
05:13mainly because everything she does goes off the rails.
05:16After failing to steal Nathan from Haley, she then abducts both Dan and Jamie.
05:21But while the storyline brings its fair share of disturbing twists,
05:24what truly feels outdated is how the show explains her behavior.
05:28As we eventually learn, Carrie's backstory involved losing both her father and her child
05:33under tragic circumstances.
05:35Her actions were ultimately attempts to replace what she'd lost.
05:38I love you, remember?
05:41Open the door, buddy.
05:43Yo, I want my mama!
05:44I am your mama now!
05:47I'll lock that door this instant!
05:49Stories involving emotional trauma have been re-evaluated over time,
05:52with audiences nowadays more critical when it's linked to harmful behavior.
05:56Today, the show's portrayal of Carrie comes across as more insensitive
06:00and out of touch than dangerous or unhinged.
06:03Tell me where you are, Jimmy Jam!
06:06I won't be mad anymore, I promise!
06:09I've got something special for you!
06:12Number five, Peyton's spiked drink.
06:15Is your friend okay?
06:16I don't know, she can't stay awake.
06:19Do you know where you are?
06:21Do you know your name?
06:23Just dizzy.
06:25Early on in the series, Peyton and Brooke crash a college party,
06:28but find themselves dealing with more than it was worth.
06:31While talking to one of the boys,
06:33Peyton fails to notice when he slips something in her drink,
06:36leaving her disoriented and vulnerable.
06:38Although the boy is ultimately punished after Lucas comes to Peyton's defense,
06:42the show blows past the effect it has on Peyton.
06:55Instead, it becomes the setup for both Peyton and Brooke to compete for Lucas's affections.
07:00Rather than focusing on Peyton's troubling experience, the show rewards Lucas for her trauma.
07:05I met students and she's going to be okay, right?
07:07So we just need to watch her until she wakes up.
07:11I can do it.
07:13You've done me too much already.
07:15Audiences today aren't as willing to overlook the disturbing implications of this episode,
07:19especially the way it glosses over a serious topic in favor of relationship drama.
07:24Number four, Dan's heart.
07:26Let me tell you something else.
07:28I'm not going to pray.
07:31You hear me?
07:32I won't.
07:33I showed remorse.
07:35I said I'm sorry.
07:36To be fair, not many in 2009 bought into this bizarre moment either.
07:41But the fact that it ever made it to air suggests the showrunners expected audiences to just go with
07:47it.
07:47As it happens, Dan waits at the hospital for a heart transplant,
07:50only for the paramedic to drop the case and a dog eats it.
07:54Yep, you really have to see it to believe it.
07:57That's supposed to be some kind of karmic lesson?
08:00Well, I don't need your lesson.
08:03And I'm not going to apologize either.
08:05As ridiculous as it is hilarious, the scene has become infamous with fans,
08:09with some considering it as the moment the show jumped the shark.
08:13Today, most question the comical nature of the whole situation
08:16instead of buying into the emotional twist the show tries to make it out to be.
08:20Dr. Haskell, who's the ER?
08:23Dr. Haskell, who's the ER?
08:25Number three, Nathan and Haley's teen marriage.
08:29Just come on, Hales. Just meet me halfway here.
08:34Why should I?
08:36Because I'm sorry.
08:39Because I love you.
08:41Given how much they behave like adults, it's easy to forget that the main characters are just
08:45teenagers in the show's early seasons. And yet, Nathan and Haley get hitched as far back as the
08:50first season. At the time, fans saw the moment as a romantic milestone in their relationship
08:55and celebrated when the pair became parents.
08:58Welcome to the world, James Lucas Scott.
09:04Look at your daddy.
09:07He's so beautiful.
09:08However, when viewed through a modern lens, many see Nathan and Haley as rushing into a complicated
09:13marriage. Their relationship is quickly weighed down by responsibilities and pressures they aren't
09:18prepared for. Both making huge sacrifices at an age when people usually figure out what they want.
09:24In retrospect, their early marriage seems more like wishful thinking than romantic or realistic.
09:29And now you're telling me you got married?
09:32This has got to be a joke.
09:35It's not a joke, mom.
09:37Mrs. Scott, we thought-
09:38Shut up, Haley.
09:39Number two, Pete Wentz's relationship with Peyton.
09:42What is up with you and Hotty McHotty?
09:45Who Mc what?
09:46Don't even try it. Please, the fallout boy?
09:49I can spot hitting on you from a mile away and you are definitely returning fire.
09:53Yep, that's right. Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy was on One Tree Hill. And instead of playing a
09:58character, he literally plays Pete Wentz. Because the singer isn't a fictional character,
10:03the optics around his romance with Peyton aren't pretty.
10:06News up next?
10:07Fall Out Boy.
10:08Yeah, I heard that band sucks. The bass player's pretty cool.
10:11While actress Hilary Burton is just three years younger in real life,
10:15her character was still in high school, dating the then 27 year old Wentz.
10:19Their scenes can be cringe-worthy to watch, even more so with how physically intense they are.
10:24Hey, I can't thank you and the band enough for being here.
10:27It's uh, no big deal, but thanks. And we wouldn't have missed it for the world,
10:31you know, it's a great cause and good to see you again.
10:34While the show frames the relationship as fun and exciting, many fans can't excuse the age gap.
10:40Looking back, making Wentz play an age-appropriate character would have been an easy solution.
10:44So it's anyone's guess why the show simply didn't go that direction instead.
10:59Before we continue, check out this single from Sound Mojo's album current, EDM Transformed.
11:05Check out the full track and album below.
11:22Number one, Dan frames Jimmy for Keith's murder.
11:25Why don't you just hand me that gun, Jimmy, and we can just follow him out of here.
11:30I can't.
11:32Well, I'm not gonna leave you here, son.
11:34The school shooting episode remains one of One Tree Hill's most famous,
11:38lauded for shedding light on a highly sensitive subject.
11:41However, its final moment has since been increasingly criticized.
11:45After Keith fails to talk down the troubled and tormented Jimmy,
11:49Dan uses it as an opportunity to kill his brother out of his own resentment.
11:53This frames Jimmy as Keith's murderer, allowing Dan to walk away unpunished.
11:58Although narratively effective, it undermines the devastating event to a plot device.
12:02Okay, okay, maybe so, all right? Maybe it is easier for me and my friends.
12:06But you know what? That doesn't make what you're doing right, does it?
12:09This is wrong, man. All of this. I think you know that.
12:13Rather than reflecting on Jimmy's pain and the ones affected, One Tree Hill goes for shock value
12:19instead. Over time, many fans have called the moment out for prioritizing drama over a
12:24traumatic situation with a real-life basis.
12:27What happened to us?
12:30That we now send our children into the world like we send young men to war.
12:38Hoping for their safe return.
12:40Can you think of any other moments that deserve to be on this list?
12:43Let us know in the comments.
