00:00Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty McCary resigned his post Tuesday
00:03after irking President Trump by slow-walking approvals of flavored e-cigarettes.
00:08McCary, a cancer doctor, was a familiar face, appearing with Trump at events promoting public
00:14health issues over the past year and a half. But the good doctor made his fair share of enemies,
00:19too. President Trump had promised to support the well-connected vape industry during his 2024
00:24campaign. So McCary's slow approvals didn't net him many friends there. But he also angered advocates
00:30for rapid approval of treatments for rare ailments like Huntington's disease, as well as anti-abortion
00:35advocates who wanted him to stop the abortion drug Mifepristone from being accessed through
00:40telehealth. Here is what President Trump told reporters of McCary's departure on Tuesday.
00:45He was having some difficulty. You know, he's a great doctor and he was having some difficulty,
00:50but he's going to go on and he's going to do well. We have everybody wants that job.
00:55The guy who's going to get that job everyone wants, for now at least, is Kyle Diamantes,
00:59who is being promoted from Deputy Commissioner to Acting Commissioner for the time being.
