00:00Ricky is with us. Hello.
00:03Hey, guys. Thanks for taking my call.
00:05Good. Thank you for calling.
00:08So I kind of agree a little bit what you guys have been saying here.
00:14I'm not panicking at all.
00:16I haven't listened much today, and just hearing you guys recently,
00:19I'm like, for people to panic, it's like we haven't been in the playoffs in 14 years,
00:24and after three games, now you want to act like this with a team
00:32that's been super exciting to watch here for the last, what, 90 days.
00:38I guess the one thing, I'm hoping the Lucanen change is kind of a wake-up call for the team.
00:47I mean, I've been to three of the games at home and watched the last two on TV,
00:52and I just don't understand the defensive breakdowns that we're having in our zone.
01:00Like, guys are just free in the slot at will for wonderful chances.
01:05And, you know, Lyons, I thought he'd been playing unbelievable,
01:09and I think the D is kind of letting him down.
01:13I don't disagree with that.
01:16I think two things can be true, though.
01:19I think the coach can say, as Lindy Ruff did Sunday night and again yesterday,
01:24this isn't on him.
01:25Like, you know, go away from that.
01:28Like, if you're about to ask me about goalie change, I don't want to talk about it.
01:31Lyons is not our problem.
01:33But you can also recognize that nine goals went in on him in two games,
01:37and he's played a bunch of games in a row,
01:40which is uncommon with this team this year and these goalies.
01:43So we've got two guys.
01:44I'm going to pivot to the other guy now.
01:46So, I think that's it.
01:48And I do think, I believe in the get your attention thing.
01:56You know, I'd like to not have to stoop to it,
01:59and I don't know that it has to be so negative.
02:03I mean, these guys have been with Lukanen for longer than they've been with Lyon.
02:07They will know what this game will mean to Lukanen in his career.
02:12Like, if he can step in and do a good job, and they, for him, can do a good job,
02:17this will lift him.
02:20Give him the net back, at least for the, you know, if he plays great tonight,
02:24if I win my bet, he gives up one goal or less, he's playing game five.
02:29And from there, who knows?
02:31Like, then it's maybe the same thing we just did, just in the opposite order.
02:35Okay, you get to go for a bit, and if you stumble or look tired
02:39or give up nine goals in two games, well, I'm going to make a change
02:43because the other guy's right here.
02:44Any win, he plays Thursday.
02:46I think that's right.
02:47Yeah.
02:48But, I mean, especially if he plays great.
02:51You know, but, yeah, I think that's right.
02:53I mean, I suppose they could win 5-4, and he just would go back in.
02:57But, so, I think we tend to look at the wake-up call as, like, I'm punishing the team.
03:05You need, you know, I need to get your attention somehow, and that is viewed negatively.
03:12I'm going to choose to look at it differently.
03:16Sure, it's going to get their attention.
03:18I'm not arguing that, but I think that's a positive.
03:21You get a chance to do something great for this guy, who you've been through it with here.
03:25Like, let's go.
03:26And I think that, you know, I support that choice.
03:30You know, I hope it works.
03:31I can't possibly know if it's going to, but I sure hope it does.
03:34I do, too, without getting too deep in the psychological weeds.
03:41Simply that, it's what they've been.
03:44And as we've talked about these playoffs every day here,
03:48I wanted to see them get back to two goalies,
03:52but I felt like it probably was only ever going to happen if they lost.
03:57And that's been right.
04:00But I still think you can win from it.
04:03And they're just not a team that has a goalie that's going to play them all.
04:06It's not Ryan Miller in 2006.
04:08Like, it's probably, it probably should be this way.
04:13So I'm okay.
04:15By the way, how did anybody convince everybody else that it's 14 years?
04:20It's 15 years.
04:212011.
04:22So let's do the math.
04:23It's 2026.
04:26And their last playoffs were in 2011.
04:28I believe that's 15 years.
04:30It was 14 seasons.
04:32Billboards that say 14 years.
04:34It was on the ESPN broadcast.
04:36Hey, it's 14.
04:37It's actually 15.
04:38This is easy math.
04:40This is a trigonometry.
04:4315.
04:4426 minus 11 is 15.
04:46Right.
04:47There were 14 non-playoff seasons in between.
04:50Is that what we're doing?
04:50It's been 15 years since they were in.
04:52You can actually say that.
04:54I feel like I have used both.
04:57I feel like.
04:58But waiting 15 years, I feel like that's the phrasing I have fallen into because that's right.
05:04We've been waiting 15 years for this.
05:06It's 14 seasons of non-playoffs, but now in the 15th, we've got it.
05:10We've been waiting 15 years.
05:11Well, who's responsible for the billboards?
05:13Yeah, I don't know about that.
05:14I can't help you there.
05:16Somebody who's not really a math person is responsible for the billboards.
05:19I don't think it's the Sabres.
05:21Would the Sabres stoop so low as to be like, well, let's try to trick everybody into thinking that it's
05:26actually only 14 years?
05:28It's by far the NHL record playoff drought.
05:31By far.
05:32So we don't really need to get cute here.
05:3515, it's fine.
05:36Own it.
05:37And I think they probably have because, you know, what are they going to get away with?
05:41I don't think the billboards are like the Sabres billboards, but I hate driving home.
05:45Every time I drive home, I see 14 years.
05:47What is that?
05:49Did nobody count?
05:53Somebody should have counted, Bulldog.
05:56You're not above that.
05:57No, I did.
06:00I don't want to say I like to count.
06:02You like to count?
06:03What kind of stupid thing is that to say?
06:05I don't want to count.
06:06ADP chasing tonight, 730.
06:08I'm going to host the show with the game on in the background.
06:13For sure they're going to win then.
06:15What does that mean?
06:16I don't know, just like you're going to be multitasking.
06:19You're not, you know, your energy isn't, you're not going to be like just staring at
06:23the TV waiting for something bad to happen.
06:26No.
06:26I don't get to, you're going to be working.
06:28Unlike on this show, I don't get to actually talk very much on that one.
06:31No, I see.
06:32So I think I can just kind of watch it and get away with it.
06:34Yeah, okay.
06:34Yeah.
06:34Well, I like it.
06:36I like that you will be doing something else rather than just, you know, sitting with your
06:42chin in your hands.
06:43Chewing on my fingernails.
06:44Right, right.
06:44Yeah, I might like that too.
06:47Yeah.
06:47I'll watch the first 20 minutes.
06:49I am going, I am going, I am going to go small tonight.
06:52I'm back, I'm back home and like just quiet.
06:55I went, I went to a big gathering Sunday night.
06:58I was at game two on Friday night.
07:01I need to just sort of, you know, get in touch with my base, which is Fred, basically.
07:07Your dog.
07:07Fred is my base.
07:08And your couch.
07:09My couch.
07:09Right.
07:10Your base.
07:12Like a politician.
07:13These are my people.
07:13Returning home.
07:14Yes.
07:15To try to rebuild his image or her image.
07:17Yes.
07:17Like, oh, well, I've got to get back to my base.
07:19Yep.
07:20That's fine.
07:21No hat today because all three hats have lost now.
07:26I bought three Sabres hats since the playoffs began and all three have been tagged with a
07:31loss now.
07:32Oh, no.
07:33I don't know what to do.
07:34I just had no hat.
07:38Fine.
07:39Fine.
07:40That could work.
07:41I don't need to represent today.
07:43They give up the first goal.
07:44You're running to your closet.
07:45Right.
07:48David is next.
07:49Hello, David.
07:51Hey, guys.
07:52Just wanted to take.
07:53You guys were talking about goalies before.
07:54And a couple weeks ago, you guys were talking about Lyon when he played for Florida.
08:00And it was something about doing well against Boston, but then didn't do so good and he got
08:03pulled.
08:05And I'm just started thinking, like, don't we do that during the regular season, a coach?
08:10And I just wanted your thoughts on that.
08:12They would pick a goalie.
08:13You're going in tonight because your record for them is this.
08:17And then the other goalie, you're going in for this team because your record is that.
08:21Isn't that something that could, I guess, what I'm trying to say and ask you guys, wouldn't
08:28Luke can be, like, a better choice for playing against Canada than he would have, you know,
08:35for Boston?
08:36Not at all to me.
08:37Not even, like, a tenth of a percent.
08:39I don't, yeah, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't feel where you're going there.
08:44And just to correct you, not that you misspoke, but, like, Lyon played three playoff games
08:51with Florida three years ago, all against the Bruins.
08:54He started games one and two.
08:56They split those games.
08:57He started game three, got pulled, never went back in.
09:00He didn't play anyone else for Florida when he was with the Panthers.
09:05He sat there the rest of the playoffs and Bobrovsky, they went on and, well, they lost in the
09:10final that year and then the next two years they won it.
09:12So he doesn't have, his playoff experience is, well, six games against Boston this year
09:19and three, three years ago.
09:21So my advice would be do not care in the slightest about goalie versus team stats or batter versus
09:31pitcher stats.
09:33Samples are too small.
09:35They're all ridiculous.
09:36Don't worry about it.
09:37Marty is next.
09:37Hello.
09:38Hey, guys.
09:39How you doing?
09:40Good.
09:42Awesome, man.
09:42All right.
09:44I'm kind of coming into your jungle here as a Habs fan, okay?
09:47But I come in peace.
09:48Kind of?
09:52So I discovered you guys on YouTube.
09:54First of all, I just want to tell you, you guys are really good, really awesome.
09:59Even the morning show I've been enjoying as well.
10:01Oh, come on.
10:02As I'm saying, as I was saying, I'm a lifelong Habs fan, but I respect the Sabres organization,
10:08you know, from the 80s on.
10:10And of course, with a legend like Lindy behind the bench, I think he's one of the most level-headed
10:16leadership and an honest guy.
10:20You know, super respect for him.
10:22Paige Thomas, Thompson, sorry, is honestly one of my top five players.
10:27But I just want to kind of say my...
10:29Who else is on your top five players?
10:32I'm trying to get you to say something that you're not reading.
10:35Who else is on your top five players?
10:37Thompson, and who are the other four?
10:40Okay, so for sure right now, like from this season on, Hudson is in my top five players
10:46in the league.
10:48McDavid, Austin Matthews, you know, I'm just naming them right away.
10:54Off Dreisaitl, Zach Crosby, you know.
10:58Thompson is totally like a beast.
11:02And he's a guy that I always said, man, I'd love to have him in Montreal.
11:06So kudos to you guys.
11:08You guys got him, and he's really amazing.
11:12But here's the thing I just want to say to you guys.
11:14As a Habs fan, I completely understand what you guys, the way that you guys are talking
11:20right now.
11:21Like, I completely understand the whole, like, mind game for a fan.
11:27And just remember, it's been 15 years for you guys, and this is just the beginning, I believe,
11:33for you guys.
11:34And I think that, you know, this year is a learning experience for a lot of the young
11:41guys.
11:42And you guys are only going to get stronger from there.
11:44Last year, I had the exact same feeling.
11:47Now, I'm not super confident about the series, because I think Buffalo can turn it around.
11:54Like, a lot of fans today, Habs fans, are super confident.
11:57I've been watching other shows on the Habs side of things, and they're super confident.
12:02And I'm feeling pretty anxious about tonight, because I think they're coming out extremely
12:08strong tonight.
12:10Okay.
12:10Buffalo.
12:11Thanks, Marty.
12:12Good to hear from you.
12:13First guy I think maybe I've ever encountered who would put Thompson in his top five players
12:19in the league.
12:22Yeah, I guess.
12:24That's a great compliment.
12:25Yep.
12:26803-0550 for your calls.
12:27Mike Schopen, the Bulldog here at WGR.
