00:00Hey guys!
00:00It's Lucy.
00:01Welcome back to Refinery29's YouTube channel.
00:04If you're new to this channel, click the little subscribe button right here.
00:08And if you're a returning subscriber, you probably know that I've been promising this
00:11video for months and months and months.
00:13So here it is, the long-awaited bullet journal vlog.
00:22As you might know, I did five days of bullet journaling last year and when I did that episode,
00:27I fell in love with the bullet journal for about a week.
00:30It was a fling.
00:31We had a brief fling.
00:32Truth be told, I gave up the bullet journal at the end of 2017 and I was really upset
00:37about it because I got a lot of questions from you guys.
00:39Can you show us your bullet journal?
00:41Let us see how it progressed into the video and I was sitting here like, oh no, I stopped.
00:47So that takes me to 2018 and I realized I want to get back into bullet journaling and
00:54I went on Instagram and looked at hashtag bullet journal, hashtag BuJo inspiration and let
00:59me tell you, I was inspired.
01:02That was when I realized that the best way to use a bullet journal is the best way that
01:06it works for you.
01:07Because there are three aspects of the bullet journal that I really love.
01:10Number one, the first thing I love is having a monthly spread where I can see before me
01:14the entire month laid out and I sort of know top level what's happening on each day.
01:19Number two, trackers.
01:21I love tracking habits and adding good habits into my life and getting rid of bad ones.
01:26And for me, trackers are a great way to visualize my progress and inspire me to keep going.
01:31And the third thing that I love about bullet journaling is watercoloring.
01:34I've always loved watercoloring and I recently bought a watercolor set from Michaels.
01:38I personally find that it is the most meditative thing in the world and I love it as a creative
01:44outlet and it's fun.
01:45But if you don't like watercoloring, you can find any other aspect of bullet journaling
01:49that you enjoy.
01:50So today, I'm going to flip through my bullet journal, I'm going to show you a little bit
01:53about what I have there.
01:54We'll plan a little for the next month ahead and I'll show you how I make some of my trackers.
01:58And I also want to show you a lot of the bullet journaling tools that I've garnered ever
02:02since starting this process.
02:04I have tons of pens and markers, brushes, pencils, and I cannot wait to share it with you.
02:09Okay, so here's the outside of my bullet journal.
02:11This was a custom bullet journal case made from a company called Case Station.
02:16It's a picture of me and my twin sister, Allie, doing yoga together.
02:20And when you open it up, there are some pockets on the left.
02:23And in the back, I've tucked in a few of my favorite stickers.
02:27You can slide an existing bullet journal into one of these cases or just use the dotted
02:31journal that comes with the case.
02:33And I love that it has this elastic loop so that I can close it securely.
02:37I've been working on this bullet journal for a long time, but I intentionally didn't color
02:42my front page just yet because I wanted to wait until this video to do it with you.
02:46This is how I typically do my watercoloring.
02:48I outline the design with pencil first and then I just get moving.
02:54I use a variety of brushes based on what works best in the moment.
02:58And I don't think too much about the color.
03:00I just sort of do whatever looks best and then mix and match.
03:04I actually wrote bullet journal on the page first, but I didn't love the way it looked,
03:08so I rewrote it on a scrap of watercolor paper, tore it off, and taped it on.
03:13And I actually like the scrapbook look better anyway.
03:16And before I let you plan with me, I want to show you some of the tools and markers I
03:20use.
03:21This entire set is from Bandeau and they're all amazing.
03:24I have these Gel Yeah gel pens, which are super bright and inky.
03:29These color-blocked write-on pencils, a Le Pen rainbow six-pack, some paper tape, oops,
03:36dropped them.
03:37But yes, they come in this eight-pack with all of these colors.
03:40Another Gel Yeah set, but this one is a glitter set.
03:43And hot spot highlighters, which are the best.
03:46I also have this Bandeau pencil case, which is gold on the inside.
03:51So yeah, it's all going to happen for you.
03:54This assortment of amazing double-sided highlighters, as well as these Unicorn Book Buddies, are
03:59from Jet Pens.
04:01And I've had these polycolor colored pencils for a while now, and they write so smoothly.
04:06They're great for when you don't want your colors to bleed through a page.
04:09I got this Pentel Presto Jumbo Correction Pen at Blick Art Materials, and it has seriously
04:16saved me so many times whenever I make a mistake.
04:19I have more goodies to show you, but first I'm going to let you plan with me for April.
04:22I decided to work off of the phrase, April showers bring May flowers, and I lined up
04:27five rain stickers on the page, one for each week in April.
04:31And then I wrote April at the top with my Tombow Dual Brush Pen, designated each cloud
04:38as a week, and added the letters of the days of the week.
04:41As you can see, I did this in pencil first to make sure it fit properly before I used
04:45the pen.
04:45But once the pen dried, I erased all of the pencil underneath.
04:48Then I went through and added the number of the day next to the letters, and that is
04:53my April monthly spread.
04:54On the other side of the page, I just made a little monthly calendar.
04:57And every time I add a new page to my bullet journal, I go back to the front and add
05:01it
05:01to the table of contents.
05:03Now back to the tools.
05:05This next batch of goodies is all from Michaels.
05:08These Crayola super tips come in literally every color and are a great tool for hand lettering
05:13beginners.
05:14Crayola watercolors, if you're like me and love to paint.
05:17A whole bunch of Tombow Dual Brush Pens.
05:21I personally think these are the best for hand lettering.
05:24I have this galaxy palette, this pastel palette, and this advanced lettering set which comes
05:30with a great eraser to remove your guidelines.
05:32I have a whole bunch of brushes for my painting, any size I could possibly need.
05:37And these Pentel gel pens come in five different tip sizes and they're my favorites.
05:42Especially the one that says 03 because it's really skinny.
05:45And last but not least, I have this sticker book with all of the stickers I could ever dream
05:50of.
05:51Okay, trackers.
05:52I mentioned that I love trackers and one thing I've been sticking to recently is having
05:56no coffee.
05:57When I made this page, it was the middle of March and I hadn't had any coffee for a couple
06:01of weeks so I wanted to track it to see how long it could last.
06:04I started by watercoloring a cup of coffee.
06:08And once the paint dried, I outlined it with pen and added some details.
06:13I had already written out what the spread would look like using pencil and so then I just
06:18went over it with darker ink.
06:19I wrote in the weeks and then I decided to use this sort of abstract brown watercolor
06:24mark that kind of looks like a coffee stain as my daily check mark spot.
06:28So I added one of these for every day of the month and then decorated the entire page with
06:33fun stickers.
06:34I wrote in the days of the week, checked off the days that I had completed so far and wrote
06:39in the number of the days and then added some more fun stickers.
06:42This is definitely one of my all time favorite habit trackers.
06:46I've also been really focused on getting enough sleep recently so I wanted to build an April
06:51sleep tracker for myself.
06:52Once again, I started in pencil because I had to measure it all out properly.
06:56I make a ton of mistakes when I'm writing in my bullet journal so I pretty much do everything
07:00in pencil first.
07:02Then I added the days of the month and used a ruler to make two separate graphs, one for
07:07each half of the month.
07:08The x axis has the day of the month and the y axis is the number of hours I slept.
07:13I first tried writing April with a few different pens but I didn't end up liking the way it
07:18came out.
07:19So I took another tear of watercolor paper, watercolored a little gradient on it, covered
07:24up the old word, and rewrote April.
07:29So here's a look at some of my bullet journal right now.
07:32The first page is that watercolor design followed by the table of contents which I add to every
07:38time I make a new page.
07:39On the next page I'm documenting books I've read and I drew a little book watercolor in
07:44the corner to make this page pretty.
07:46This page has my 2018 yoga tracker which was totally inspired by a spread I found on Pinterest.
07:52And then I have my fresh juice ideas which are all from the Juice Generation book.
07:56And I watercolored a little fruit or veggie next to each.
08:00This is my January monthly log.
08:02And my February monthly log.
08:04And here's a fun page I made for my family vacation to Costa Rica.
08:08I watercolored these rainbow clouds, one for each day of the trip.
08:12And then at the end of every day I wrote a little blurb in the clouds so that I could
08:16read back and remember highlights from the trip.
08:18You've already seen this page in 5 days of self care but it has my cactus watercolor and
08:23then my 5 days of self care episode breakdown.
08:26And you've seen these pages too but here's my gratitude log and some color swatches that
08:31I've actually added more to since that video.
08:33Basically these swatches let me see how the different pens and markers look on the paper
08:38so that I can refer to them whenever I'm choosing which colors to use.
08:41This was my March monthly log which was inspired by my life in a bullet.
08:44I've written the highlights of the day in the little boxes and I made space on the bottom
08:48for my upcoming videos.
08:50But I feel like this page is still not done and needs something else in the empty space.
08:54And then here's my no coffee tracker, my April monthly log, and my sleep tracker.
09:00And that's it!
09:01That is my bullet journal.
