Sean Ono Lennon and Les Claypool of The Claypool Lennon Delirium discuss their project 'Cosmix,' which was inspired by the philosophical thought experiment of the 'paperclip dilemma' and the potential dangers of a superintelligent AI.
Transcript
00:00Sean and Les, what inspired you to tackle artificial intelligence on this go-around?
00:06In this case, you know, we had just been reading about the paperclip dilemma.
00:10This idea that, you know, a supercomputer that was smarter than humans,
00:14if you programmed it to do something as simple as make as many paperclips as possible,
00:18it could eventually wind up destroying the whole planet and then, you know,
00:23creating spaceships to go out and colonize the whole solar system and the galaxy to just turn everything into paperclips.
00:28So it's a cautionary tale, you know.
00:30To me, that's just the subtext.
00:32It's more a commentary on the loss of empathy that we're experiencing on a worldwide level right now.
00:40And I don't think that, you know, a synthetic life form has that ability because we are made of star
00:47stuff.
00:47We are the universe looking back at itself and that's, can't replicate that.
