00:53Tell us first about your childhood.
00:55I grew up in the Philippines.
00:56I was born and raised here.
00:57I think that's one misconception a lot of people thought that I came from abroad only.
01:02But no, I was born and raised in Angeles City, Pampanga.
01:05I grew up in a family of all girls.
01:08And kasama ko po yung mga lola ko po, tsaka titas ko po.
01:11Dito naman po sa Pinas, mas nag-i-enjoy po ako.
01:14You speak English very fluently.
01:16Yes.
01:16I mean, you know how to speak Tagalog.
01:18Yes po. Actually, natunong ko po mag-Tagalog para sa showbiz career po.
01:23Kalaunan, lumipat ang kanilang pamilya sa Canada.
01:25Kung saan niya ipinagpatuloy ang kanyang pag-aaral.
01:28When I went back to Canada naman, it was more of my mother was there,
01:31my brother and my sister are there.
01:33So, sino yung parang male image mo, yung father image mo?
01:38Wala po talaga.
01:39Talaga, you grew up with women.
01:41Yeah.
01:41Pero hindi daw naging hadlang ang pagiging malayo niya sa Pinas sa pangarap niyang maging one of the stars.
01:49Umuwi siya sa bansa taong 2019 para subukan ang kapalaran niya sa show business.
01:55RJ, tell us about your struggles, your sacrifices, para ma-attain mo itong dream mo na maging model or actor.
02:04Not a lot of people know this, but as of the moment, I'm alone. I live alone.
02:09So, for me to pursue this whole path, they weren't really that supportive, I would say.
02:14So, it's been more of a solo dream. It's not a path that they would want me to push.
02:18Sometimes, I do have to admit, it does get lonely since I live alone.
02:21So, parang after all the glam, the lights, the cameras, I end up home and I'm just alone.
02:27I wouldn't have anyone much to talk to.
02:29Hindi man daw pabor ang kanyang pamilya ang natatanging sumuporta raw sa pangarap niya,
02:35ang kanyang lola na si Mama Mai.
02:38Yeah, my lola has been a big inspiration to me and she's also one of the very first people that
02:42persuaded me to join the industry ko.
02:44When I was very young, I was very shy.
02:46In every family gathering, she would tell me,
02:48Jay, dance, sing in front of the crowd, in front of the family and everything.
02:53And from that moment on, sabi ko, this is the kind of path I want.
02:58One thing that my lola said before she passed away was,
03:01she wants to see me one last time on the screen and sana make it.
03:05Sa edad na labing-apat, sumali siya sa isang talent search na nagbukas sa kanya ng pinto sa entertainment industry.
03:13Bata pa lang, alam na lang niya ang kalakaran sa industriya,
03:16na para sa marami, mahalaga ang pisikal na anyo ng isang artista.
03:21Mula sa kinis at kulay ng balat, pati nasa hubog ng katawan.
03:26Yun nga lang, sa pagod at pagpupuyat,
03:29ay isang tabi niya ang sariling kalusugan
03:32at nauwi sa sobrang pagkapayat at unhealthy lifestyle.
03:36When I entered the industry and I became very skinny,
03:39I wasn't, you know, eating properly sometimes.
03:42There was times I would forget to eat.
03:44Nakadagdag pa nga raw sa stress niya noon,
03:46ang kritisismong natatanggap niya mula sa ibang tao.
03:49I think growing up because I was a foreigner,
03:51I'd usually get a lot of words thrown at me.
03:54Bakit?
03:55Sometimes when I would go to school, they would say,
03:57I don't normally belong there.
03:59Is it because of the accent?
04:00Minsan po.
04:01Kasi dati pa talaga hindi pa marunong mag Tagalog.
04:03As in, I was just straight English.
04:05I couldn't even understand my dialect in Pampanga before,
04:08which was Kapampangan.
04:09They would always say the meanest things.
04:11Like, what was the meanest thing that they told you?
04:13They were just like, um, if I can recall properly,
04:17there was one time I was at school,
04:19and when I was in front of there,
04:20and then they, they did the,
04:22it's more of a nasty talk on how they're saying that,
04:24ah, your mom settled for someone low.
04:28Kasi siya po yung foreigner.
04:29Gumaganon po sila sa akin growing up.
04:31Ah, or maybe below the belt.
04:33Yeah, it was more below the belt for me.
04:35How would you defend yourself?
04:36Ever since I was a kid,
04:37I've been quite patient with that thing.
04:39So, I don't wish bad on people.
04:41Like, even the people who bullied me.
04:43I mean, you can do whatever you guys want.
04:45At the end of the day, I'm myself.
04:47And I think that's one,
04:48one thing I've been keeping for the rest of my life,
04:51where I'd rather just be patient and not,
04:52you know, throw my anger,
04:54or say anything towards them both.
04:56What was the worst part of the bullying?
04:57The worst part about it was,
04:59it did get to me at some point.
05:01How bad did it get?
05:02It went to the part where I took a break
05:04from pursuing my dream for three years.
05:07Ang pagkakataon na sumikat,
05:09pansamantalang naudlot para kay RJ.
05:11Bumalik sa Canada at ginugol ang kanyang oras
05:14sa pag-aaral at pagtatapos sa koleyo.
05:17Ang pangarap ng pamilya niya
05:19na makatapos at makakuha ng corporate job,
05:22natupad ng pasuki naman niya
05:24ang industriya ng real estate sa Canada.
05:26They honestly wanted me to have a regular job,
05:29live a normal quiet life.
05:31Like office job?
05:32Office job or anything that comes by in any offer.
05:35Pero ang tawag ng entablado
05:37at ng kanyang mga taga-suporta,
05:39pilit siyang hinihila,
05:40mabalik ng Pilipinas.
05:42During over the course of three years,
05:44there would be moments where they would say na,
05:45balik ka na,
05:47balik ka na sa industry.
05:48And I said, I don't know yet.
05:49I don't know if it's my time.
05:50Taong 2022,
05:52nang muling umuwi sa bansa si RJ
05:54para hanapin ang lugar niya
05:56sa industriyang pinapangarap.
05:59At dito na nga siya nagpasyang
06:01pumasok naman sa mundo ng pageantry.
06:04A very dear friend of mine reached out
06:06and said,
06:07Hey, Mr. Pampanga's around the corner.
06:09You wanna go for it?
06:10Yeah.
06:11I said, okay, I'll take it.
06:13After that,
06:14I was the very first candidate that got released.
06:16And my friend called me right away,
06:18screaming over the cell phone,
06:19saying he's so happy that I finally went back.
06:21So growing up with women,
06:23what effect did this have on you?
06:24Was that good?
06:25I would say it's good.
06:27I mean, half of my friends are mostly girls' folk.
06:30And I think now that I entered the pageantry
06:32is where I actually was able to build a brotherhood
06:34with among the other candidates.
06:35It became more,
06:37I knew how to talk to people
06:38or direct things in that way.
06:40So nagtampo yung family mo?
06:41Medyo po.
06:42It was more of nagtampo na sila ngayon
06:43kasi bumalik ako agad.
06:46But I did tell them already prior to that
06:48that I really did want to pursue it.
06:50Oh, kamusta sila ngayon?
06:52Sa'yo?
06:53Nakamove on na ba?
06:54Or medyo may tampo pa rin?
06:55Medyo may tampo pa rin po.
06:57But it's all good.
06:58I think one thing I should say is
06:59living alone in everything
07:01and wanting to pursue the dream,
07:02it's for myself.
07:04What do you want to tell your family members

07:08I hope na hindi na po ko yung nagtatampo.
07:11I'm doing well.
07:12Everything's been going fine.
07:14And I'm pursuing the little me's dream right now.
07:18Dito na nagsimula ang kanyang karera
07:20sa Mr. Pampanga 2026.
07:23At sa gitna ng kanyang pagbabalik,
07:26muli siyang sinubukan ng panahon.
07:28The day before the Grand Sashing,
07:30that's the day that we were gonna be announced
07:31for our municipalities in Mr. Pampanga,
07:34I was on a motorcycle riding on
07:36and then I turned to the right.
07:37As soon as we turned to the right,
07:38there was a car that swerved right at us.
07:43He collided with us and we ended up falling,
07:45me and the driver.
07:46But your head was fine.
07:48My head was fine and everything.
07:49It was more of I was able to stand up right away.
07:52I just got worried because during that time,
07:54the only thing I was thinking about was,
07:56oh no, I might not make it to the Grand Sashing.
07:59So as I was waiting at the terminal already,
08:01despite the accident,
08:03I said,
08:04hindi ko na kaya parang ang sakit na pa ako sobra.
08:06And I started,
08:07I saw it started swelling up and everything.
08:09And then what happened was,
08:11I told the organization that,
08:13hey, I can't go because I'm injured.
08:16I was like,
08:16I can't really walk at all.
08:18And then by that,
08:18they said it's okay.
08:19And then they're gonna try to explain it
08:21on the media and everything.
08:22Ang sanay pagrampa
08:23na uwi sa hindi inaasahang pinsala
08:26ng kanyang kaliwang paa.
08:28So what happened to you?
08:29I sprained my left foot in the process
08:32and I had a little bit of cuts
08:33and there's even like a sugat here
08:34but I remained from the glass and everything.
08:36It was like a whole one-week recovery
08:38of me doing ice therapy.
08:40I got a steroid shot on my foot
08:42so that it would heal faster.
08:43And the swelling would reduce.
08:45Muli niyang naramdaman ang takot
08:47na mawala ang oportunidad na ito.
08:49Nang tumawag ang management
08:50at ipinahatid sa kanya
08:52na posibleng palitan siya
08:54ng ibang kandidato
08:55dahil sa kanyang injury.
08:57Kaya kahit mahira,
08:58pinilit niyang gumaling
08:59at makalakad agad.
09:02Pero hindi niya inaasahan
09:04na sa kanyang pagpapagaling,
09:06ang magiging kapalit
09:07ang biglang pagdagdag ng timba.
09:11dahil sa ginamit na steroids sa kanyang gamot.

09:16it made me bloat more.
09:18It made me add more water weight
09:19than I was supposed to pull.

09:27I was 67 kilograms before.
09:30So I do have to admit,
09:31I think I was very underweight back then.

09:36Over the course of three years,
09:37I bulked up to 180.

09:39Almost triple.

09:41Dahil dito,
09:43napadalas din ang pagbisita niya sa gym.
09:45So anong goal mo ngayon?
09:46Right now my goal is to hopefully
09:48cut down to a linear physique
09:50in the sense where
09:51I'm more fuller with muscles.
09:53I'm not gonna go back to being skinny skinny,
09:55but I wanna have more muscles,
09:56more into the hunk kind of type po.

10:05When I gained the weight,
10:06I was actually even much more happier.
10:07I always remember what my lola used to say
10:09where when she saw my cheeks
10:10were squishier and fuller,
10:12she would always be so happy.

11:13I feel so proud and confident.

11:16ng photo afterwards there po.
11:18And it was so,
11:18sobrang nakakatuwa po.
11:20Ano gusto mong sabihin sa mga taong
11:21ganyan ang pinagdaanan?
11:22For everyone who's dealt through
11:26being on the healthier side,
11:29love yourself.
11:30At the end of the day,
11:31no one can say anything towards you
11:33because it's only you who knows you.
11:36Everyone is always gonna have a verdict
11:37or a say on how you're supposed
11:39to live up to these standards,
11:40but in reality,
11:41it's up to you.
