00:05This piece actually came from an artist in Toronto, Canada.
00:09Mallory Tulture, shout out.
00:11This was an actual work of art that had been hung in museums, featured in magazines, and now it's here
00:17at the Sports Bra.
00:26I'm Sarah Gore and this is Open House NYC Home Court.
00:30We are switching things up this week as the NBA playoffs return to NBC and Peacock.
00:35We are looking at the game from a different angle, exploring how basketball shows up in everyday life.
00:40From thoughtfully designed studios, classrooms, and arenas, to the passionate fans that honor their teams.
00:47And we'll start at the source, Studio One at NBC Sports.
00:51Maria Taylor brings us Inside NBA Showtime and what it takes to bring you the game night after night.
00:58Maria, show them around.
01:04What's up, Open House?
01:05It's Maria Taylor.
01:06You're deep inside the NBC Sports studios and I wanted to give you a tour of Studio One because that's
01:10where we do NBA Showtime.
01:12But you can come in.
01:13Come on.
01:13Come on.
01:16This is the entry point.
01:18Look at all of this open space.
01:19I don't know where they found it at, but it's light, it's bright, it's quite all right.
01:23You can kind of see like all the logos and all the little details of what make it cool.
01:27I mean, I'm six foot two, so let's just have a moment for how big this has to be.
01:31Yeah, it's huge.
01:32So that way all the Hall of Famers look small when they come into the studio.
01:39So this is where we all sit.
01:41This is usually Mello's spot where he's going to be doodling with his notebook.
01:44This is where Vince Carter sits.
01:46This is where I get to sit.
01:48They call me the captain and if they don't, they should.
01:50This is where T-Max sits and usually right around 10.30 he starts to get sleepy.
01:54So it's a deep lean in this chair and we try to get him a blanket so he feels comfortable.
01:59If we have someone to talk to, think about a talkback.
02:01So maybe bam out of bio after he scores 83 points.
02:05This is the monitor we talk to him out of.
02:07So you'll see us sitting over there.
02:09You'll see our big jib camera sweeping in, taking on the interview.
02:13And you see, you know you got a good studio crew when they turn the lights on when you walk
02:16in
02:16because y'all have one job, make me look good.
02:22We do have a basket here in the studio.
02:26The bad news is for me is that every time I shoot, I usually shoot with a lot of arc
02:29and there's this little track right here that I've hit like three times.
02:33But only because you're here, I'm going to shoot a free throw again.
02:46All right.
02:47Next up, I'm going to show you the sandbox, which is basically like a telestrator.
02:50So you could draw on it, say you could do circles, but this is next gen because when
02:54you see it, the players actually pop up out of the sandbox.
02:57The only two people that touch this bad boy are the cousins.
02:59So VC and T-Mac, and they're moving around these little circles that you see in real time.
03:05But if you watch the show, you're going to see like a little player standing up.
03:10What a cool tool to have to really show all of our basketball analysts what it looks like
03:15to break down a play.
03:16So that's pretty cool.
03:20The last thing I wanted to show you is our awesome crew.
03:24They live here and make it all work.
03:26They run the cameras, the sandbox, all of it.
03:28We don't do it without them.
03:30So this is their house.
03:31Thanks for coming to our open house.
03:32And we'll see you next time.
03:34Watch NBA Showtime.
03:41Coming up next, how this unique sports bar celebrates women in professional sports.
03:45This was created for us by a gentleman who owns a flooring company who works on NCAA, WNBA,
03:53and NBA floors.
03:55Obviously, it's got our logo on it, but it also has representation for almost all of the
04:00women's sports basketball teams of this state.
04:07My earliest memory of collecting was probably, you know, I have a friend and I went to visit
04:12him.
04:12He had a sports room in Texas, and I always thought, like, wow, that was pretty cool.
04:15And I thought maybe I could do something similar.
04:17Mine started out as a sports room, but quickly gravitated into something old Knicks.
04:23I think the best memory for me is I had since taken a picture with Red Holtzman after talking
04:27basketball, and I still had his book that he signed for me personally.
04:31He read to Chris, a true Knicks fan, Red Holtzman, which I cherish today.
04:55Welcome back, team.
04:57Now we're in Portland, Oregon, visiting a place that redefines what a sports bar can be.
05:01It's called the sports bra, and it's more than just a clever name.
05:05Founded by a chef and former athlete, the idea is simple.
05:09Create a space that celebrates women's sports in every way.
05:13Here, the vibe is easy, the food is classic, and the crowd shows up with purpose.
05:20Enjoy.
05:24Hi, my name is Jenny, and welcome to the sports bra.
05:27We're here in Portland, Oregon.
05:28Step inside my home court.
05:32When I was thinking about entrepreneurship, I was really afraid.
05:35But the idea of if the younger version of myself stepped into the sports bra today,
05:41what kind of impact that would have had on me as a kid to walk into a space where I
05:45felt truly seen,
05:47where I was surrounded by people who loved women's sports,
05:50where I could look on the TV and see grown women playing the sport that I love.
05:55And then in 2022, we opened the doors to what is now the sports bra.
06:04And one of the very first things you'll see when you come into the sports bra
06:07is this full door panel that we got from Just Women's Sports.
06:11It covers both sides of this door, and it just sets the tone for all women's sports all the time
06:15over here.
06:18One of the things we love to do here at the sports bra is collaborate with nonprofits and local organizations.
06:23And one of our very first ones was with Girls Build.
06:26So we have four picnic tables outside that they built, and also two really huge team tables.
06:32I remember the day that they dropped the tables in, they came in with their families,
06:35and they just had such a sense of pride just empowering girls, not just from sports on the TV screens,
06:41but showing them that they can do anything.
06:46So there's so many things that we have at the bra.
06:48You know, donated memorabilia, autographed shoes, jerseys, flags from teams from all over the world.
06:57And now we're taking a look at this chandelier.
06:59This is a centerpiece for the sports bra.
07:01It gets photographed probably the most out of any single item here at the bra.
07:05This piece actually came from an artist in Toronto, Canada.
07:09Mallory Tolcher, shout out.
07:11This was an actual work of art that had been hung in museums, featured in magazines, and now it's here
07:17at the sports bra.
07:19So one of my favorite parts that's relatively new to the sports bra is this custom bar top.
07:26This was created for us by a gentleman who owns a flooring company who works on NCAA, WNBA, and NBA
07:34floors.
07:35Obviously, it's got our logo on it, but it also has representation for almost all of the women's sports basketball
07:42teams of this state.
07:44So here we have this kind of a darker red.
07:47This is from the original Portland Fire color.
07:49This purple is for the University of Portland.
07:51We've got this orange and blue as homage to the NCAA March Madness time that this floor was from.
07:58And then a little bit of the green over there is for the Oregon Ducks, of course.
08:03One of my favorite parts of the bra from the very beginning is this draftless chalkboard.
08:09A couple of friends of mine built this basically from scratch.
08:12When they delivered it, they turned it around, and on the back, they had written a bunch of quotes from,
08:18like, game-changing women
08:19and talking about chasing your dreams.
08:22And this chalkboard is a strong reminder to me that there's always the support of the community
08:27and the inspiration of the people who came before us.
08:32There was this infamous incident that happened here in Portland,
08:35and I would love to show you a little piece of how we grabbed that part of history.
08:40Take a look at this little peep show we got over here.
08:45Bango!
08:46So this is the actual court with the three-point line that was incorrect for the NCAAs here in Portland.
08:54This was where the line was that was wrong.
08:57And so they painted over it that night.
08:59And then they painted the correct line here.
09:01So you can tell how far off that they were on just one side of the court.
09:05And so now we have a little piece of Portland history here at the Sportsbro.
09:12There's this feeling of representation, diversity, inclusion that's built into the space.
09:17We try to put as much as we can on the TVs and on our walls.
09:21We have some amazing women owned, operated and made beers, ciders and wines.
09:26What was a place that I built for myself has truly become a home court for so many people.
09:33I was so happy to have you and take you around and show you my home court.
09:37Please come pay us a visit at the sports bra here in Portland, Oregon.
09:40We cannot wait to watch some sports with you.
09:52Yes, I love that, Jenny.
09:54Thanks for the invite.
09:55Keep doing what you're doing as a former athlete myself.
09:57I love celebrating women's sports.
09:59All right, coming up, we check out what makes the NBA's newest home court so special.
10:04This could be your home court.
10:05There's a 4K video board, floor-to-ceiling windows with full blackout shades.
10:09So just imagine how many uses there are for this place.
10:12Yes, that is the Intuit Dome, but you're just going to have to stick around to see it.
10:20What's going on, everybody?
10:22My name is Dalen Grace, AKA Lake Show Room, and I'm going to take you inside the Lake Show Room.
10:28Check it out.
10:32I've always just grown up with the Lakers.
10:34My favorite player was and is Kobe Bryant.
10:38He's my GOAT.
10:39I believe he's the GOAT, greatest of all time.
10:41This Lake Show Room has become a Lake Show home.
10:44So it's kind of like a getaway.
10:46It's the fan cave, the man cave.
10:53The best part of this room is it's not just me.
10:57It's people who have seen me on Instagram.
10:58They've seen me in person at the games.
11:00They have some things of their own that they want to donate to the Lake Show Room.
11:04So it's kind of like a Lakers home court.
11:07Lakers all day.
11:29Welcome back, team.
11:31Next up is the newest home court in the NBA, the Los Angeles Clippers' very own Intuit Dome.
11:36This place is crazy cool.
11:38And our friend, Gillian Zucker, is going to show us around.
11:41Hey there, Gillian.
11:42Take it away.
11:43Thanks, Sarah.
11:44So great to have you here at our home court, the Intuit Dome.
11:48Let's take you inside to have a look.
11:56This building was designed in order to create connectivity with community.
12:00And it's this idea that you could come to this place and engage with people who are sitting next to
12:05you,
12:05who you might not have a lot else in common with.
12:08And when you come here, you get this feeling that you just cannot get at home.
12:16When the players leave the locker room, they come to the court right through here.
12:21This is the center of our Lexus Lounge.
12:23And you can imagine fans standing along these railings and high-fiving the players as they come through.
12:28It's great energy.
12:29Want to see what it's like to be one of the players?
12:32Come on, let's go!
12:46There's so much about Intuit Dome that creates a home court advantage for the Clippers.
12:50So I think the first thing you notice when you walk in is this crazy scoreboard.
12:54It's almost an acre of LEDs, and we really engage people with the board.
12:59We ran power to every single seat in the building, and that gives us an opportunity to engage fans.
13:04We have LED lights that light up that create energy and excitement.
13:08We also have an ultra-wideband chip in every seat, so we can tell if you're cheering and who for.
13:13You don't want to cheer in this building against the Clippers, or we'll know it.
13:22One of the visions for Intuit Dome to achieve ultimate home court advantage was to have everybody under one roof.
13:28So our business offices are here.
13:30It's where we play our basketball games, and it's also where the team practices.
13:34So behind me, you'll see the two practice courts.
13:36And around me, you're going to see all of our equipment that's necessary for cardio and weight training.
13:42And the players even have a full restaurant here.
13:47We're inside the locker room at Intuit Dome, and we're really, really proud of these lockers.
13:53We're custom-made for these players, really understanding the things that were most important to them.
13:57We toured hundreds of facilities, and in a lot of the places we went, we would see a logo embedded
14:02in the carpet.
14:03But we didn't want to walk on the Clippers logo.
14:05So instead, we decided to light it up and put the logo on the ceiling.
14:09And one of the most unique features about the Clippers logo is that it's a compass.
14:13And if you look at where the N in Los Angeles is, it points north.
14:22High school basketball's home court is right here at Intuit Dome.
14:25In fact, we've created a jersey wall that has a collection of every single jersey, girls and boys, from every
14:32high school team in the state of California.
14:34It is pretty amazing to come to this area where the jersey wall is, even if you aren't from California,
14:39because you get to watch people who are looking for their jerseys.
14:42You watch their faces light up as they find them and take photographs in front of them to create keepsakes
14:47and send out to their friends.
14:51This is a court that was completely designed for the community.
14:54So just imagine, this could be your home court.
14:57There's acoustical tiling all around the entire thing.
15:00There is a 4K video board, floor to ceiling windows with full blackout shades.
15:05So just imagine how many uses there are for this place.
15:12This is the wall, 5,000 seats of home court advantage, and this right here is where the magic happens.
15:20It's the capo stand in the swell.
15:22So imagine behind me 300 fans crazy screaming at the top of their lungs, trying to distract the opposing team
15:30player from making their free throw.
15:32All of us at the same time yelling, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss.
15:37There's nothing more fun than watching the wall during a game at Intuit Dome.
15:40If I had a big drum, you could join me in a big chant.
15:43Let's go Clippers.
15:49Thanks so much for joining us on our tour of Intuit Dome, but this place is nothing without the fans.
15:54So we hope you'll join us and make our home court yours.
16:03Coming up, a high school that uses basketball as the backbone of their curriculum.
16:08When I first came here, it felt like I didn't have to be anybody else.
16:12I was just myself, and I'm so grateful.
16:20My name is Anthony Donahue, and I'm from the Bronx, New York.
16:23I've been a diehard Knicks fan my whole life.
16:25I just loved everything about the Knicks, the gear, the swag, which I have more than probably most fans.
16:31The Knicks are important to me because when I was a kid, no matter what I was going through in
16:35life,
16:36all that mattered to me was when do the Knicks play next or who are the Knicks trading for over
16:40the summer.
16:41But throughout so many trials and tribulations, it was the Knicks that probably saved me more than anything.
17:02Welcome back, everyone.
17:03The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School in the Bronx is unique in many ways.
17:09To begin with, it uses basketball as a foundation for their curriculum.
17:13And with an all-new campus almost complete, the future is bright.
17:17See why.
17:22I'm Satio Ponyagua, and I am a senior at Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School.
17:27You might think this school is normal.
17:29It's not.
17:30And every class that you see has basketball.
17:32Now that we have basketball on every type of subject, it's not hard to learn new different things in this
17:38world.
17:41Hi, I'm Jackie Rashami, board chair of the Earl Monroe Charter School here in the Bronx, New York.
17:47It's a unique high school that focuses on academics, but using the game of basketball to help teach those academics.
17:54Although we're in a temporary facility that used to be the Archdiocese Catholic School,
17:59we tried to make it representative of who we are and what our name represents.
18:03Earl Monroe was an NBA All-Star, won a championship with the New York Knicks,
18:09and was always involved in education and helping young people.
18:12We approached Earl.
18:13He loved the idea and was willing to lend his name to something of this stature
18:18and could be extremely powerful to young people in achieving success in today's world.
18:26Here we are in the entry to our school.
18:28We do have pictures of Earl Monroe and other programs that the school is about
18:33to help create the culture as they enter the school and start their day.
18:36For any school, but especially our school, athletics are important.
18:40When the students enter, they see the awards and the trophies they've won in various athletic programs.
18:45So let's go down to the gym and see how that's developed.
18:51I couldn't show you the entire facility without heading down here to our basketball court,
18:55home of the City Championship basketball team.
18:58It's not just about teaching around the game, it's also winning the game.
19:02At the Earl Monroe School, we really believe a ball and a book could change the world.
19:07Now that you've seen where we play ball, let me show you where we hit the books.
19:14It just felt natural when I first came here.
19:17It felt like I didn't have to be anybody else.
19:20I was just myself and I'm so grateful.
19:23I need you guys to know the new school is going to be so much better.
19:27You're going to have so much opportunity, so much gift, a bigger school, bigger classes.
19:32It's just going to be even more magical with the new one.
19:39Although we're in our temporary facility not far from here, we're building a brand new facility.
19:43Come check it out.
19:49Welcome to the new school.
19:50We're weeks from being finished and we're really excited.
19:53Let me show you what we got going on inside.
20:01Roman Rowe, not only a Hall of Famer, but New York Knick royalty.
20:05As every New Yorker knows, he's one of the few Knicks to win a championship.
20:09I can't think of a better person to have his name on this building.
20:11Right now, we're standing in the main gym.
20:13This is where the magic happens, or will happen.
20:16It was very important for us to have the gym on the ground floor and the classrooms above.
20:20The challenge was structural.
20:21How do we build up and support the floors above without any columns?
20:24We did that with a pair of 96-foot-long trusses.
20:27Architecture and basketball are two things that I'm very passionate about.
20:30And this was a dream project because I got to blend the two of them.
20:33We have openings up there on the second floor for the VIP lounge and the media lab.
20:36I think we should go take a look.
20:41This is the media production suite.
20:42This is where students will come to prepare for careers in broadcasting and journalism.
20:47So, of course, we put it right above the basketball court with some of the best views of the action.
20:51These are definitely not nosebleeds.
20:53Let me tell you, I can't wait for the new school year where this building will really come to life.
21:02Thank you for visiting the Earl Monroe School where basketball is more than a sport.
21:06It's a curriculum of study.
21:07An inspiration for design.
21:09And a way of life.
21:10And we'll see you on the court.
21:18Well, that's the game, everybody.
21:20We're wrapping this show up.
21:21Thanks so much for joining us today on Home Court.
21:24Don't forget, we'll be back next week with more homes and design inspiration.
21:28And if you can't wait that long, do check us out on our Open House TV YouTube channel and our
21:33Instagram page for adding new stuff all the time just for you.
21:35Thanks so much for watching and we'll see you next week.
