The United States has confirmed its first reported case of hantavirus, raising concern among public health authorities and triggering increased monitoring across multiple states. The case is linked to a rare viral infection that can cause severe respiratory illness, typically associated with exposure to infected rodents. Health agencies, including the CDC and WHO, are closely tracking the situation while assessing potential risks to public safety. Officials emphasize that while isolated cases can occur, early detection and containment measures are in place to prevent further spread. The development has prompted heightened awareness and precautionary guidance for the public.

00:00Part of the passengers, we have around 17 Americans.
00:12This is a question for the United States.
00:15With passengers flying home to the United States,
00:19what is your message to Americans who are still scared?
00:25Yeah, thank you very much.
00:27That's a very important question.
00:30By the way, as part of the passengers, we have around 17 Americans.
00:38And coming to your question, we have been repeating the same answer many times.
00:46This is not another COVID.
00:49And the risk to the public is low.
00:55So they shouldn't be scared and they shouldn't panic.
01:00This is based on how the virus is behaving now.
01:06Because this virus is well known and there are assessments that have been done.
01:12But not only that, this, you know, for several years, there were assessments on the behavior of the virus.
01:21So that's why we say the risk is low.
01:25So I want them to really take that because, based on scientific assessment and based on evidence, as ministers said,
01:39the risk is low.
01:39So they shouldn't worry.
01:42But the other part is all countries are taking precautions, including the U.S.
01:48We're in contact with U.S. colleagues, both in Atlanta and there are also some here in Tenerife.
01:55And they're monitoring everything and they have made all preparations and they have their plan in place.
02:04I think the aircraft is arriving anytime today.
02:08So they have made all the precautions and I hope the American people will have faith in their experts also
02:20who are already working, working on this.
02:22And then, of course, the coordination, the leadership by Spain here and all countries involved also is strong here.
02:30That's why, by the way, we chose Tenerife based on the IHR, a strong response here, a strong capacity here.
02:37So that should also give them the confidence that this is being managed very well.
02:43So that's what I would like to say and WHO is also here supporting to make the American people safe
02:50and the rest of the world also safe.
02:54But there is another issue because we are fixated on the ship now.
02:59But as you know, the last death from the current outbreak was on May 2nd.
03:06So we haven't recorded any death after that.
03:10And as you know, there were a number who were evacuated and disembarked.
03:13And that's also good news.
03:17And we hope there will not be any death, but we will monitor strictly.
03:28A confirmed case of Hantavirus has now been reported in the U.S., linked to an international outbreak originating from
03:36a cruise ship expedition
03:37that recently traveled through remote regions of the Southern Hemisphere.
03:42Health authorities say the case is connected to the MV Hondias, a Dutch-flagged expedition cruise ship that sailed from
03:50Ushuaia, Argentina, in early April 2026,
03:54with routes including Antarctica and surrounding remote areas.
03:58The outbreak being tracked is the Andes virus strain, a rare form of Hantavirus known for its potential, in limited
04:06conditions, for person-to-person transmission.
04:09So far, officials confirm a total of eight cases connected to the ship, including six laboratory-confirmed infections and two
04:18suspected cases, along with three reported deaths.
04:21In the United States, health officials have confirmed at least one case among passengers who were repatriated after exposure on
04:29the vessel.
04:30Another individual is under medical observation with mild symptoms while testing continues.
04:37Several American passengers have been placed under quarantine and monitoring in multiple states, including Nebraska, as part of CDC-controlled
04:46isolation protocols.
04:47Authorities emphasize that the general public risk remains extremely low, and there is currently no evidence of community spread within
04:56the United States.
04:57The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is actively tracking all returning passengers and close contacts, with state health departments
05:06involved in monitoring across multiple regions.
05:09Experts explain that Hantavirus infections are rare in the U.S., typically caused by rodent exposure in rural western areas,
05:18and most annual cases remain very low nationwide.
05:22However, this particular outbreak is unusual due to its connection to international travel and a cruise ship environment, where close
05:31contact may have contributed to limited transmission.
05:34Global health agencies, including the World Health Organization, are also monitoring the situation as investigations continue into how the outbreak
05:44began and spread on board.
05:46For now, officials are urging continued surveillance, early symptom reporting, and strict monitoring of exposed individuals while investigations remain ongoing.
06:05For now, officials are LOOKING IN THEIR PROCESS IN WHISTLE, VEN THEIR PROCEDUCES, WHO ARE YOU BUILTING NAME-MASISING, WHITING
