00:31They went into businesses that were not excluded to Jews
00:36As they approached the motion picture industry, they approached it from how they can distribute a product
00:41This was the greatest business in the world because the people paid the money before they got the goods
00:46So coming to California, they realized that they could create their own social environment
00:51They could create an empire of their own
00:54And that's precisely what they did
01:06You can say it was a romantic idea that a poor guy with $19 sewn in his pocket could found
01:11an industry
01:12But it turned out to be true
01:23I'm not sure that there was an, quote, American dream before the Jews came to Hollywood and invented it
01:32The experience of being on the margins meant that your identity was tied to the maintenance of popular culture
01:40They got to put their hopes and aspirations and mythologies about what a perfect life would be like
01:46Which is something I think people probably spend a long time thinking about
01:49When they have a very imperfect life with a great deal of persecution, disempowerment
01:53And, you know, what would the system be if we could make it up and show it to you?
01:58The Optimistic
01:59Anyone anywhere could identify with so many of the themes of American movies
02:04And smile
02:07This kind of moviegoing was religious because it had to do with worship
02:11It had to do with the screen being larger than you were
02:14And you being in awe of what you were looking at
02:17I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy
02:20Yankee Doodle to all die
02:23They were tough
02:24They had to be tough
02:26I will not have quitters
02:28All lazy men
02:29Working for Universal
02:31That's straight from the shoulder, isn't it?
02:34These guys were ruthless
02:36They used women
02:37They treated stars brutally sometimes
02:41But they had redeeming qualities, too
02:44And they were, most of all, showmen
02:47They loved movies
02:49They lived for movies
02:56Make America unsafe for those who seek to tear down what others have built
03:01Help keep America for those who believe in America
03:03We'll fight and endure and win together
03:10This committee has the responsibility of exposing
03:14Subversive ailments, wherever they may exist
03:16And that scared the shit out of them
03:19Because the last thing they wanted to be called was un-American
03:22God bless America
03:28The land that I love
03:33Stand beside her
03:35And guide her
03:38Through the night
03:40With a life from above
03:45God bless America
03:54My home
03:57Oh, Annie M
03:58There's no place like home
