00:01A herd of 11 Borneo pygmy elephants, including a calf, was successfully rescued after becoming
00:08trapped in an abandoned water pond near the Deramakot Forest Reserve in Kinabatangan.
00:14In a statement on Monday, the Sabah Wildlife Department said the incident occurred last
00:19week when the elephants were unable to climb out of the pond due to its steep and slippery
00:25embankments.
00:25The department said a team from the Kinabatangan District Wildlife Department was dispatched
00:32to the site after receiving information from farm workers about the stranded animals.
00:38Wildlife rangers then carried out a rescue operation with the assistance of an excavator,
00:44which was used to create a safe path for the elephants to exit the pond without suffering
00:49serious injuries.
00:51According to the department, the farm is located near rivers and wetland areas that form part
00:58of the elephant's natural habitat, increasing the likelihood of similar incidents occurring
01:03in the future.
01:04To prevent a recurrence, the Wildlife Department recommended that the abandoned pond be closed
01:10closed off or fitted with suitable safety barriers.
