00:00And I've been dreaming, dreaming of a brand new color.
00:09Allison, this house.
00:11I know.
00:12I'm never going to get tired of it.
00:14I'm here with my dear friend Allison today.
00:17I am visiting her and her new home,
00:20helping her sort through some of her stuff
00:21and talking about the potential of renovating
00:24her two girls' bedrooms.
00:25So how old is Hattie now?
00:26She just turned 11.
00:27And Adeline?
00:28Adeline just turned 8.
00:30In order to move in, we have to have a place to sleep.
00:32Right now, it's essentially a two-bedroom,
00:34and I need to make it a three-bedroom.
00:36Yes.
00:36There's two giant bedrooms upstairs.
00:39Making that one bedroom into two, it's large enough.
00:42What's your budget?
00:43I'm hoping to keep it around $6,000 or $7,000.
00:49Okay.
00:49And I know design services are expensive
00:51and construction and all of that.
00:53We've talked about this.
00:54We're here to help.
00:55We love doing this era of home.
00:58Yeah.
00:58And you have such an amazing inventory of stuff to work with.
01:02This is shop inventory.
01:03It's stuff that I've squirreled away for myself.
01:05I love antiques so much.
01:06Any dollar we can save you.
01:08Alison had her own flower shop for a while,
01:11and then it sort of morphed into found furnishing pieces
01:14and vintage furniture.
01:16My taste is sort of changing a little bit,
01:18where once maybe it was a little on the shabby chic side.
01:20I think that I'm appreciating a more refined antique style.
01:24I know.
01:24I've sort of transitioned out of my, like, boho chic kind of a vibe.
01:29Maybe it's our age.
01:30Maybe.
01:31The fact that you and the girls have this fresh start.
01:35I had to go through a lot to get here.
01:37It's been a challenging few years seeing my marriage dissolve
01:40and becoming a single mother.
01:43I just, I'm so happy for you.
01:47You are such a beautiful light.
01:51Yeah.
01:51I'm so happy for you.
01:53You do see me.
01:53Yeah.
01:54You always just, you know, I'm getting emotional
01:58because to be able to take this on
02:00and then to bring in my friend who can help me.
02:02I trust you implicitly.
02:03There's no one I'd rather do it with.
02:05I am here for you, but, like, let's prioritize the girls.
02:09Yeah.
02:09I am more than happy to help out my friend,
02:11to help her and the girls really get off on the right foot.
02:16Going home.
02:22We're moving nearer to the sun.
02:26After years of living in the city,
02:28I moved to Prince Edward County.
02:30I'm starting up my design firm again out here from scratch.
02:33Hello.
02:35Hello.
02:35You've got both of us here.
02:37Amazing.
02:38We've got the whole squad.
02:39Kate and Joe were friends of mine first
02:41before we decided to start working together.
02:44I'm out in Cherry Valley, I think.
02:46I still don't know my way around properly.
02:48I was with Allison.
02:50The house is amazing.
02:53It's been through so much in the past few years,
02:56so being part of that just feels very, very special.
03:00And kids' rooms are fun.
03:01Kids' rooms are so much fun.
03:03I'm on my way to Christine and John's
03:05to look at their third floor.
03:07Oh.
03:08So another bedroom situation.
03:11Our design firm, SKDS,
03:12is taking on two projects at once right now,
03:15but the thing is,
03:16when you're starting out a business,
03:17the hustle is hard.
03:18I'm lucky enough to have
03:19two different friends right now
03:21that need some help,
03:22but they present
03:23two very different kinds of projects out here.
03:25We've got a traditional brick home,
03:28which is quintessential county architecture.
03:31And then we've also got a modern farmhouse.
03:33We're already getting really busy.
03:35We'll get her done.
03:36We'll get her done.
03:38That's so county.
03:47Christine and John live in Cressy,
03:49which is about a half-hour drive away from Picton.
03:57Hi, Sarah.
03:58Hi, Sarah.
04:00Happy summer.
04:01Happy summer.
04:02Christine and John,
04:03they bought this old property
04:04that had an old farmhouse on it,
04:06and this is what they've turned it into,
04:08a beautiful, modern, white house,
04:12juxtaposed against the raw ruggedness
04:15of the fields, the property.
04:17It's just, it's kind of to die for.
04:20It's the perfect modern farmhouse.
04:23We came to the county for the first time in 2015
04:26and fell in love with the area.
04:29We were thinking about buying a place,
04:32and literally when we just turned the corner
04:35and saw this place,
04:36like, I'm going to get emotional just thinking about it,
04:38we're like, this is the one.
04:39And I don't think anybody else
04:41who would have seen the house the way it was
04:44would have ever wanted to even get out of their car.
04:47But the property itself was really beautiful.
04:50John took the old house down board by board.
04:52Then the fun started.
04:53The whole shell of the house was done,
04:55and John and myself pretty much did the whole inside,
04:59mainly you.
05:02We haven't managed to figure out the third floor.
05:05I don't know if it's we're exhausted
05:06from all the other rooms.
05:07Yeah, let's just say we've run out of ideas.
05:09We could use, we could use your help.
05:11Let's go check that out.
05:12Everything's white, as my daughter would say.
05:15I know, but it's so timeless.
05:18Oh, modern, galley-style kitchen, love it.
05:21Always wanted a galley kitchen.
05:23And this table.
05:25We made this out of the wood
05:26from the old house, actually.
05:28What a cool nod to the original house.
05:30John, he can build anything.
05:33I mean, he's working on his own studio right now
05:35here as a workshop.
05:37Did you do these?
05:38Christine painted them, yeah.
05:40You paint too?
05:41This is like too much talent for two people.
05:44All right, let's see this third floor.
05:46Okay.
05:46Okay.
05:48Oh, yes.
05:50It's a beautiful space.
05:52So this kind of serves as a,
05:54like, we get lots of company up here.
05:55My kids get moved up here.
05:57We have a girls weekend.
05:59It has like a Victorian modern dorm vibes.
06:03I'd like to at least fit four to six people up here.
06:07And it'd be nice if they could have a space
06:08to actually hang out when they get up in the morning.
06:11It's an awkward space.
06:12We just don't have the design sense
06:16to kind of figure out
06:17how to make that cohesive with the house.
06:21I know you love your white on white paint.
06:23It's a beautiful aesthetic.
06:25Christine sort of claims she's a minimalist,
06:27and she is,
06:28but she also loves eclecticism as well,
06:32but it's very curated eclecticism.
06:34I really want to make sure
06:35that we extend that vibe up into the third floor,
06:39but also push her a little out of her comfort zone.
06:43Don would like us to apply some color.
06:45Just some color.
06:46Some color.
06:47Some kind of color.
06:49Are you scaring me a little bit?
06:52Do you have a vision for what you'd like down here?
06:54Wide plank pine flooring?
06:56Yeah.
06:57And we've already purchased the flooring.
06:58That's amazing.
06:59We just want you guys to put it in.
07:00This elevation interests me.
07:02It's like it wants to be symmetrical,
07:06but it's not.
07:08I would love if it was symmetrical.
07:10And we never dealt with the top of this.
07:11We thought maybe we'd use it for something
07:13for display or something like that,
07:14but now we just kind of hate it.
07:15We can fit in the two queen beds
07:17on either side of this doorway.
07:19Maybe some kind of a textured accent across the back,
07:23something like shiplap.
07:24That will allow us to also have
07:26a little pendant light on each side
07:28so you get total symmetry here.
07:30I think that there's something
07:31that's really a missed opportunity
07:34on that balcony, though.
07:36I would love to paint this little alcove
07:40a warm beacon of a light kind of a color
07:44so that when the lights are on up here
07:47in the evening
07:47and you've got this beautiful white exterior,
07:49there's just this one little box that's glowing.
07:52Would you be open to that?
07:54I think we have to deal with it.
07:55Could we go as bold as orange?
07:58Yes.
07:59Who is this woman?
08:00No, no.
08:00So the reason I'm saying yes to orange
08:02is because we already have that as an accent.
08:04We're not introducing this kind of
08:06totally different accent color.
08:07I'm good.
08:08I love it.
08:09I'm proud of you, girl.
08:11How much are we talking about
08:12do you guys want to spend up here?
08:14I think we were thinking about
08:15in the 10K range.
08:17Okay.
08:18I don't know if that kind of works or not.
08:20Like, if we have any custom pieces,
08:22is that something that I can at least bring to you
08:23to see if you can tackle?
08:25Yeah, I think I'm open to it.
08:26Yeah.
08:27Okay, well, I'm going to hang back
08:28and do some measurements, if you don't mind.
08:29I have to draw this up, get it planning,
08:31and then we'll figure out
08:32maybe what projects you can help us with.
08:34Sounds good.
08:34Sounds good.
08:34We're excited.
08:35All right.
08:45While Joe and Kate and I get to design this space,
08:48John is super handy,
08:50and we can lean on him
08:51to actually fix that asymmetrical wall
08:54that Christine hates so much.
08:56Christine and John and their family
08:58come to the county for the entire summer.
09:00We really want to get this project moving
09:02so they can enjoy the rest of the summer here.
09:07Tomorrow's another day.
09:11Hello.
09:13I brought some fruit.
09:14Great.
09:15This is where I can bring Joe and Kate
09:17into the design process.
09:19It's Christine and John's today
09:21that we're talking about.
09:22Budget is $10,000.
09:23For this one, it makes sense for Joe
09:25to be doing the nitty-gritty of managing it all
09:28and also doing the design work as well
09:30because it's not really a large enough project
09:32to have a third party come in and do it.
09:34And then Kate, this self-taught,
09:36amazing art director, stylist.
09:39This is where the best ideas come from
09:41is when we really collaborate.
09:42Christine and John's,
09:43we've finalized the layout.
09:45We've got the two queen beds
09:48tucked into these nice,
09:50complementary, symmetrical nooks.
09:52We've got the day bed
09:53in the far right corner.
09:54I'm picturing, like, a thin runner
09:57of a cushion along the back
09:59because it is going to be wood.
10:00We've got a lounge area,
10:02card table.
10:03And then to get Christine's look,
10:06it's hits of mid-century modern
10:08and also found objects.
10:10I think it's great.
10:11We should have a term
10:12that allows us,
10:14as we divide and conquer,
10:15to make sure that regardless
10:16of what we're sourcing or picking,
10:18we're always coming back
10:19to Christine's look.
10:21A design anchor
10:22that sums up the look
10:25and the feel of that project.
10:27Doing that allows the three of us
10:29to work collaboratively
10:31and independently
10:32while always ensuring
10:33that we're coming back
10:34to that root idea.
10:36She uses a lot of vintage fabric
10:39and pulled vintage furniture.
10:41But then we've got all, like,
10:42the clean lines
10:43of the roofline of the house
10:44and inside.
10:45It's very minimal
10:46in terms of style.
10:47Okay, I think, okay.
10:48Clean lines and vintage layers.
10:51How about that?
10:52Nailed it.
10:53She's open to color.
10:54She kind of sent me a few ideas.
10:56She's into kind of
10:57a very pale blue.
10:58Pulled a few options
11:00for us here.
11:01For Christine,
11:02this is a real departure
11:03from an all-white interior.
11:05And I think it's
11:05the perfect amount of color
11:07to bring in
11:08to create this vibe
11:09on the third floor.
11:10It's slightly different
11:11than the rest of the house,
11:12but still cohesive.
11:13The downside is that
11:15my idea for the orange
11:17exterior balcony
11:18will actually make
11:19that gray-blue look muddy.
11:21We have to come up
11:22with an alternative,
11:23something that's punchier
11:25and brighter,
11:25but still has to work
11:27with the gray-blue
11:28that we used on the interior.
11:29For the vintage layers,
11:31she did have some fabrics
11:33that we can use.
11:34Great.
11:35Where we get those vintage layers
11:36brought in
11:37is all about the fabrics.
11:39Custom mattress covers,
11:41as well as back cushions
11:42and some throw pillows.
11:44Any concerns about budget?
11:45Oh, yeah.
11:46Well, yeah.
11:47So I was just kind of thinking.
11:49We've got a reroute electrical.
11:51Then we've got drywall.
11:53We've got full paint.
11:55We've got new floors.
11:57Install only.
11:58The day bed.
11:59Did you even have a chance
12:00to price it out?
12:01I think we're going to be
12:01in the range of about $4,500
12:03to do a custom bed.
12:05Yeah.
12:06Tallying all this up.
12:07Mm-hmm.
12:08And I feel like
12:09we're already over budget.
12:14I feel like
12:15we're already over budget.
12:18How much do you think
12:19we have to trim?
12:19What does it look like?
12:21Um, like a few thousand dollars.
12:23Oh.
12:26I think we have to get John
12:27to do this day bed.
12:29He basically built
12:30that house from scratch.
12:32I'll do up a millwork drawing
12:33to see if that's something
12:34that he can build.
12:35Tomorrow I'm going to meet
12:36with Allison, by the way,
12:37because I think it's like
12:38all hands on deck
12:39to get started
12:40on the two girls' bedrooms.
12:41Great.
12:41These projects are not big budget,
12:43but tight budgets
12:45force you to be resourceful.
12:47It brings out my, like,
12:50scrappy self
12:51and my DIYer.
12:53So I secretly love
12:55tight budgets.
12:56Don't tell Joe and Kate,
12:57because they're like,
12:58who did we start
12:59a design firm with?
13:00Come on, it's fruit.
13:00Oh, I'd like to.
13:01Fruit.
13:03Fruit.
13:11Allison's new house
13:12is in Cherry Valley,
13:13and that's just
13:13south of Picton.
13:16Oh, my gosh, Sarah.
13:17Are you ready for this?
13:18Oh, look at it.
13:21It's incredible.
13:22I know.
13:23Ah!
13:24Hi!
13:25Hi!
13:27Joe and Kate and I,
13:28we're all friends
13:28with Allison,
13:29so we really want
13:30to help her
13:31and her girls
13:32settle in her new home.
13:34It's literal magic
13:35that I'm standing here,
13:36but where it started
13:38was from
13:40a lot of loss.
13:42I opened my flower shop,
13:44Coriander Girl,
13:45in 2009 in the city,
13:46and my partner at the time,
13:48his family was from
13:49Prince Edward County,
13:50and then when we knew
13:51we wanted to start a family,
13:52it sort of solidified
13:54the decision to come
13:55and be here full-time.
13:56The next natural iteration
13:58felt like moving
13:59into the weddings
14:00and events space.
14:01I found the loveliest spot.
14:03It had a church on it.
14:04I had my first inaugural wedding.
14:06During the ceremony,
14:09the church floor collapsed,
14:12and a lot of people fell.
14:14Don't know how that happened,
14:16but no one was hurt.
14:17The church collapsing
14:18set in motion
14:20sort of a series of collapses
14:22in relationship.
14:24Financially,
14:25there was no contingency fund.
14:28My dreams were stolen
14:30from that day.
14:33I closed Coriander Girl,
14:35and I had to really downsize.
14:38I worked for a realtor,
14:40and this property
14:41came across my desk,
14:43and I fell in love
14:44with every aspect
14:45of this property.
14:47Wow, Allison.
14:49Yeah.
14:50Wow.
14:51I know.
14:51200-year-old beauty.
14:52Look at the detail.
14:54I know.
14:54Look at this.
14:55She's a grand dog.
14:57I know.
14:57Look at this.
14:57She is a grand dog.
15:00And it has been loved.
15:02Butler's pantry?
15:03Should we go upstairs?
15:04There is a lot to do
15:06in Allison's very old house,
15:08but we have prioritized
15:10tackling the girls' bedrooms
15:12to create two bedrooms
15:13out of one room
15:14so we can get the family moved in
15:16before the school year starts.
15:18Wow.
15:19It's really asking
15:20to become two generous-sized
15:22girls' bedrooms.
15:23I'm sorry I won't be able
15:24to see Jo,
15:25but I love you.
15:26I'm going to say goodbye.
15:27And she's out.
15:28Yeah.
15:29Have fun.
15:29Thank you for trusting us
15:31with this to hide in the girls.
15:32I'm going to pay you in flowers.
15:34I love it.
15:34We take it.
15:36Also, my dad
15:37is going to be here
15:38for construction.
15:39He was a general contractor
15:41for 40 years.
15:42Oh, I love it so much.
15:43Yeah.
15:44Yeah.
15:48There is not
15:49a big renovation budget,
15:50so we really have
15:51to be frugal here.
15:53Very obviously,
15:54wall down the middle
15:55of the room.
15:55Like, we just essentially
15:56have to divide this
15:57in half, right?
15:58We can do it
15:59right through there.
16:00Actually,
16:00if you can see right here,
16:02there's some old nail lines.
16:04Oh, we didn't even notice that.
16:05And look at even, like,
16:06this discum-
16:06You can almost see a dip.
16:08Yep.
16:08From likely where
16:09there was a wall,
16:11we do a dividing wall
16:13as close to the center
16:15as possible.
16:16We'll have to give it
16:17a little bit
16:17of breathing room
16:18off of the mantel
16:19to make sure
16:19that doesn't feel crowded.
16:21Obviously,
16:21pulling those details across
16:24so it feels original
16:25to the space.
16:25Yeah.
16:26This house has
16:27so much historical character.
16:29I want to marry
16:30this historical charm
16:32meets childhood joy.
16:33What's the budget
16:34on this project?
16:36Seven or six thousand.
16:39Yeah, I started high.
16:40Yeah.
16:41Like, oh, okay.
16:42So this side,
16:43we know,
16:44is going to be Hattie's,
16:45her eldest, right?
16:46I do like the wood tone
16:48in one of the rooms
16:49at least, I feel like.
16:51Okay, let me get my notebook.
16:52I'm going to write
16:52some of this down.
16:53Doing two rooms
16:54for children.
16:56And two girls.
16:57And two girls.
16:57I have two girls.
16:58Yeah.
16:58This is like our wheelhouse
17:00because it allows us
17:00to do some fun things,
17:02some kind of whimsical things.
17:04What about, like,
17:05a secret passageway
17:06between the rooms?
17:08A secret door or something?
17:10Exactly, like a bookcase
17:11on this side
17:12that we would have
17:13millworked.
17:14Okay.
17:14Oh, I'm seeing Jo's face.
17:16I think it would be, like,
17:1740% of her budget.
17:19But we're building
17:20a fresh wall.
17:21I know.
17:21Like, we just leave
17:21the opening.
17:22It's the finishing part,
17:24so...
17:25You think that much, eh?
17:26Yeah.
17:26Jo is really bringing
17:28me back down to earth.
17:30So I'm a bit concerned
17:31that some of these
17:32fun ideas might end up
17:34kind of on the
17:35cutting room floor.
17:36I don't know.
17:37Yeah.
17:37I'm going to figure
17:38something out.
17:38I can crunch the numbers
17:39further, but...
17:40Yeah.
17:41They're very spiky,
17:42these numbers.
17:43They're jabbing us
17:43in the side, these numbers.
17:45I know.
17:45They just bring us
17:46back down to reality.
17:48The colors burn
17:50so far by my hair.
17:52We're moving
17:53like yours
17:54and past we tread
17:56a prism of love.
17:58Christine and John's,
17:59this is a fun one.
18:00I'm excited to get started
18:00on it.
18:01We really need to get
18:02Adam to close up
18:04that cubby
18:05on the top of the doorway.
18:09We're color drenching
18:10in this beautiful
18:11soft blue color.
18:12A little bit out
18:13of Christine's
18:14comfort zone.
18:17And Adam is starting
18:18to install the new floors.
18:22I wanted to stop in
18:23at Christine and John's
18:24just to check in
18:25on Adam's progress
18:25and how he's making out
18:27with the flooring.
18:29They were being
18:30installed incorrectly.
18:32That's really annoying.
18:34Hey, Sarah,
18:35it's Joe,
18:35just outside
18:36at Christine and John's.
18:37I went upstairs
18:38to check on the progress
18:40and Adam
18:41started installing
18:42the flooring
18:43upside down.
18:44If you could come
18:45take a look at the site,
18:47that would be great.
18:51I'm really hopeful
18:52that my beautiful,
18:54restful,
18:55zen drive
18:56up to Cressy
18:57has put me
18:58in a great headspace
18:59to walk into
19:00Christine and John's
19:01because we've got
19:02some problems
19:02on this project.
19:03Okay.
19:04How were floors
19:06possibly installed
19:07upside down, guys?
19:08I've been doing this
19:09for like 20 years.
19:10That's a first.
19:16How were floors
19:18possibly installed
19:19upside down, guys?
19:21Technically,
19:22it's not flooring material.
19:24They're pine siding boards.
19:26Christine and John,
19:27to save money,
19:28went and purchased
19:28this material themselves,
19:29knowing that this
19:31was a pine siding material
19:32that is intended
19:33to go on the exterior
19:34of a building.
19:35You can kind of see,
19:36you know,
19:36that's the bevel,
19:37so that's how we had it.
19:39It's totally pine siding.
19:41Yeah.
19:41And then on the reverse,
19:43it's a nice tight joint.
19:45There is a bevel
19:46on one side
19:47because for the exterior,
19:49you want a little bevel detail.
19:51They wanted it installed
19:52upside down
19:53so that the boards
19:54are really tight
19:55to each other.
19:56He's about
19:56a quarter of the way done,
19:58so we're going to have
19:59to rip it out,
20:00get some more flooring
20:01and redo it.
20:01We're using a material
20:03in an unconventional way.
20:05We should have
20:05asked more questions.
20:06I can understand
20:07you saw the bevel
20:08and that's a finished side.
20:10I actually have
20:10more boards to get,
20:11so I'm going to run down there.
20:13Sorry, Adam.
20:13No worries.
20:14Bye, guys.
20:16What are we looking at
20:17cost-wise for that?
20:18Being about $400
20:19for the boards.
20:22And then labor-wise,
20:23I kind of worked out
20:24a deal with Adam.
20:25He's going to kind of
20:26cover his labor portion of it.
20:28That's really fair of him.
20:29Yeah.
20:30This is part of running
20:31a company, right?
20:32Like, we do have to eat
20:33that cost.
20:34It's a small project,
20:35so even though
20:35it's a small number,
20:36it feels like a big number.
20:37It feels like a big number.
20:38Yeah.
20:38It looks great.
20:39I know.
20:40And we painted
20:41the outside cubby, too.
20:42It's just like a darker
20:43version of in here, right?
20:44That's kind of
20:45what we thought.
20:48It's meh.
20:48I think we have to go outside
20:49and take a look
20:50from out there
20:50because that's where
20:51we wanted the big impact
20:52in the first place.
20:53John's in his workshop
20:54working on the custom sofa.
20:56Oh, I cannot wait
20:57to see that.
20:57Yeah.
21:01Hello.
21:02Oh, hey.
21:03Hey, how's it going?
21:05How's the daybed sectional?
21:07It's coming along
21:08really well, actually.
21:09It's been coming
21:10together pretty quickly.
21:11This is why
21:11we could help them out
21:12with this project
21:13with a smaller budget.
21:15John is so handy.
21:16So you can see
21:17we decided to just
21:19extend that platform
21:20out to make this
21:21kind of like a table.
21:22Ooh, I like that.
21:23That's very like
21:24mid-century modern
21:25where the platform
21:26extends to super low table.
21:28And it creates
21:28a little landing
21:29where we could put
21:30something like
21:30a table lamp,
21:31a little vase
21:32to be able to
21:33camouflage
21:34two twin beds
21:36up there.
21:36This daybed
21:37is chef's kiss.
21:39Okay, Joe.
21:40Our exterior balcony color
21:42got reaction
21:43if it's working
21:44or if it's not working.
21:45Great.
21:47Hmm.
21:48Meh.
21:49It's falling
21:49totally flat.
21:50What are you thinking?
21:52You think it's something?
21:53Do you have something
21:53in your mind?
21:54I do.
21:55Okay, on the count of three.
21:56One, two, three.
21:59Yellow.
22:00No!
22:01Are you serious?
22:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:03Oh my gosh,
22:03I love that you
22:04caught yellow too.
22:05Great minds.
22:05Great minds.
22:06Think a yellow.
22:07Think a yellow.
22:07We're beautiful.
22:13I got a text from Joe.
22:15We need a electric yellow,
22:17we think.
22:18The light blue.
22:19This is some of the fabrics.
22:21Let's see what we've got.
22:23I do like this yellow here.
22:28The yellow is perfect.
22:30I wish we got it right
22:31the first time,
22:32but we got it right
22:32the second time
22:33and that's what matters.
22:45ladies, ladies.
22:48I'm meeting with Alison's girls
22:49Hattie and Adeline
22:50and we're going to go over
22:52the direction that I'm thinking
22:54of taking their two bedrooms.
22:56Your mom and I have talked
22:57a little bit about favorite colors.
22:59You've shown up wearing
23:01your favorite colors
23:02and this is really proving
23:03that your mom was right.
23:04Is pink your only favorite color?
23:05Light blue's my favorite color.
23:07Oh, oops.
23:08We got some bad intel, mom.
23:09Do you know what goes
23:11really beautifully with light blue?
23:12Is a peachy pink.
23:15Adeline, possibility of wallpaper.
23:17Yeah.
23:18Okay?
23:18Something as simple as a stripe.
23:20We can bring in really fun patterns
23:23on all of your fabrics.
23:25What do you think about that?
23:27Yeah?
23:28You, girl.
23:29You come with me.
23:29All right.
23:31Here now in the future
23:33queen bedroom.
23:35I don't think wallpaper
23:37is your jam over here.
23:39I think it's all about color.
23:42We're going to pick
23:43paint colors with you guys.
23:44Adeline, we're going to start
23:45with your room.
23:46Okay.
23:47Oh.
23:47That's so pretty.
23:49What would you call that color?
23:51Like the peaches pink.
23:53The color's okay.
23:54Don't worry.
23:55I've got more options.
23:56Oh, that's really pretty.
23:58I love this one.
23:59I love it a lot.
24:00I think I like this one
24:01better than that one.
24:04Oh.
24:07What do you like the most?
24:11I'm liking this one.
24:13Really?
24:14With our wallpaper.
24:16Really beautiful.
24:17You're very mature
24:18for your eight-year-old age, madame.
24:21Patty.
24:22Oh, that's really pretty.
24:24I think it's just a teensy bit too dark.
24:27Okay, I actually really like
24:29that one.
24:29We still have option three.
24:31Oh, that's really pretty.
24:33I really, really, really,
24:35really like that color.
24:37Oh.
24:37I love working with you clients.
24:40Now I can make the decision
24:41on the rest of the furnishings
24:42because we have our jumping off point.
24:44We're going to get
24:45Coriander to add Paul in
24:46to build the wall,
24:47which will save us a lot of money.
25:01We're in the town of Bloomfield right now,
25:03which is one of the most
25:04picturesque towns in the county.
25:06I absolutely love it.
25:08Hi, Shelley.
25:10Hi, Sarah.
25:11Keep and Coquito
25:12are both owned
25:13by my dear friend, Shelley.
25:15Today, Kate and I
25:16are looking specifically
25:17for Christine and John's
25:18real investment pieces
25:19that go on the bed.
25:21We're kind of working
25:22with the idea of clean lines,
25:23and we'd love to have
25:25some vintage layers.
25:26And I'm seeing your wall
25:28of blankets.
25:29And this is very vintage to me
25:30because this is like
25:31hand-woven wool blankets.
25:33And they've been doing it
25:34for a hundred years?
25:35Oh, wow.
25:36I'm going to pull out
25:36the paint color.
25:38This is saying Christine to me.
25:40I know she loves this kind
25:41of earthy brown tone.
25:44Let's start with this.
25:45This is catching my eye, though, Sarah.
25:47Like, what do you think
25:48of this style of cushion?
25:50That.
25:50I do feel that the color...
25:53I see something.
25:54Oh.
25:55Yeah.
25:56Of course I see something.
25:57Of course.
25:59There's multiples of these.
26:01Yeah, that's another thing
26:02to consider.
26:03What does that look like?
26:04That's cool.
26:05All of a sudden,
26:06this is getting cooler, right?
26:09Yeah.
26:10Like, it's a little bit more
26:11mid-century modern for Christine.
26:13I'm really loving this vibe.
26:14Darker black is better
26:16with the day bed.
26:18Okay.
26:24I'm very excited to see
26:25how the space has been divided
26:27into Hattie and Adeline's bedroom.
26:29So much has changed
26:30since the last time
26:31you were here.
26:32Wow.
26:33Paul.
26:35This looks amazing.
26:37Well, thank you very much.
26:39I had to replicate
26:40some of that trim.
26:41Wow.
26:42You are so talented, Paul.
26:44Oh, my goodness.
26:45And how amazing to do this
26:46for your granddaughters.
26:48Oh, yeah.
26:48I can never turn my daughter down.
26:50I mean, she's such a...
26:51She's such a sweetheart.
26:53Industrious.
26:54Our entire family.
26:56Look up to her.
26:57I see where she gets it from, though, Paul.
27:00You're such a beautiful person,
27:02and it's really a pleasure
27:03to be able to help your family
27:06in any way that we can.
27:07Absolutely.
27:07Because we love Allison.
27:08We love you.
27:09We love the girls.
27:10Yeah.
27:10I have an amazing relationship
27:12with my father,
27:13and not everyone has that, you know?
27:16And it's really special.
27:18So it's, uh, yeah.
27:19I got a little choked up.
27:21Adeline's room looks so good.
27:23Yes.
27:23I know.
27:24I know we can't do
27:26a big millworked bookcase hidden door.
27:29What if we do something like
27:31just a medicine cabinet
27:32or, like, a little picture
27:34that you open?
27:35What if we did something smaller?
27:37Mm.
27:38Like a fairy door?
27:39Yeah.
27:40If we were to go down
27:41in a basement,
27:42like, almost like a little mouse hole.
27:43We can hide it better that way, too.
27:45Oh, I love this.
27:46I was thinking too big.
27:47Too big.
27:48Gotta go smaller, Mike.
27:48We have a small budget,
27:50small little pass-through.
27:51I love it.
27:52Where are we at
27:53with our very tight budget?
27:55I think we're doing okay.
27:56Paul's done so much.
27:58Go team.
27:59Yes.
28:00But let's not jinx in it.
28:01No high five?
28:02No high five.
28:02Not yet.
28:03Not till we're done.
28:03Ha ha ha.
28:13This is a low-budget project.
28:16Joe had a lot of leftover elements,
28:18like this tile that we were able to use.
28:20Adeline loves the color blue,
28:22but we're doing a pink room for her,
28:24so we're trying to bring hits of blue.
28:26The blue of the flower is very much Adeline,
28:29but we feel the flower is very much Allison.
28:32So it's a nice mix of Allison
28:34and her daughter Adeline in the bedroom.
28:38There is nothing more transformative
28:41to a space than paint.
28:42And what I love about the colors
28:44for both girls' rooms
28:45is that they're very historical colors,
28:48so they are suiting the home.
28:51We're also incorporating
28:52a little bit of wallpaper in Adeline's room,
28:55and this simple little stripe pattern
28:57is just so sweet,
28:59but not juvenile,
29:00and very in line
29:02with the heritage of the home.
29:06And here comes the young home.
29:08Being so inspired by the local shops,
29:11this design firm is truly county.
29:13We're shopping for Allison's Girls,
29:16Hattie and Adeline.
29:17Our theme for this is
29:18classic charm meets childhood joy.
29:21Lots of small decor items.
29:23It's the way we breathe personality
29:25into a space
29:26and doesn't feel spanking new designer.
29:29Okay, we've only got $200 to work with.
29:32Oh, this Bentwood chair.
29:34I'm a sucker for a Bentwood.
29:36What about the desk in Adeline's room?
29:39I would love that.
29:40Oh, these are fun, too.
29:43Terracotta shade is kind of incredible.
29:45It really is.
29:47Could we use them in Hatties?
29:50I love them.
29:51I like it.
29:51Hi, Ronica.
29:52We're going to just pick through your wares here.
29:55Yeah, well, you're the best,
29:56worst-kept secret in the county.
29:58I love these.
30:01Could they work for the girls' rooms, though?
30:04They are kind of the right colorway
30:07for Christine and John.
30:08That is an aggressive scallop.
30:10It's the little,
30:11just enough wrong, it's right.
30:13We could paint them blue.
30:15Yes.
30:16For Adeline's room,
30:18there is an art to this.
30:19If you see something
30:20that sparks your excitement,
30:22you must purchase it
30:24because you're never going to find that again.
30:26Let's tally this up.
30:27Why don't you get Ronica?
30:28Okay.
30:29And I will start sectioning it out
30:30by what's for Allison's project
30:32and what is not.
30:34Ronica!
30:45Joe and I packed up
30:46a whole bunch of smalls.
30:48We're going to do it.
30:49Shush, shush, shush.
30:50Shush, shush, shush, shush.
30:50All right.
30:51Shush, shush.
30:51Approaching a dressing day of a house,
30:53we start with the larger pieces.
30:55John's day bed?
30:56I know.
30:57Yeah.
30:58Who knew?
30:58It's the perfect neutral over here
31:00for all of our pattern mixing
31:02that we're going to do.
31:03Great work, John.
31:04I think this is a bolster.
31:05Got it.
31:06We brought extra of everything
31:08just in case we need...
31:10As you do for propping days.
31:11Yeah, you never know
31:12until you get it in the space.
31:14I think for the sheer cost
31:16of those pillows,
31:17we should probably try
31:19to dress without them.
31:21Yeah.
31:22It can very quickly
31:23pull us over budget.
31:24Yeah.
31:24You are talking to me
31:26about budget.
31:27I know.
31:27How do we feel
31:28about the velvet?
31:30I like the tan, mustardy...
31:34What if I add this?
31:36So we've got those blankets.
31:37Yeah.
31:38Let's just...
31:39Oh, there's your answer.
31:40I think we need the pink.
31:42Yeah.
31:42That's the way
31:43to brighten it up.
31:45We can't make it look cluttered.
31:47That is not Christine's aesthetic.
31:49Just this.
31:50Yeah.
31:50It's very cute.
31:52I feel like it's really Christine.
31:54Yeah.
31:55I'm not worried.
31:55And John.
31:56I'm sorry.
31:56John, too.
31:57That's the wild card.
31:58Yeah.
31:59I'm not even worried anymore.
32:01No?
32:01I feel cocky.
32:02Yeah.
32:03It'll look great.
32:04There is no limit
32:06to all of the things
32:08we can do.
32:10Hi.
32:11Hi, guys.
32:12Today is the day
32:13that I hand back
32:14Christine and John's
32:15third floor bedroom,
32:18living room space.
32:19I've got one little thing
32:20to do up there.
32:21Okay.
32:21And then I'm going to
32:22come down and get you.
32:23How are you feeling?
32:23I'm nervous.
32:24I'm excited.
32:26I'm, like, emotional.
32:26You're going to see everything.
32:28But I'm, like,
32:29I'm so excited.
32:30I really am.
32:31I need, like, 10 minutes.
32:32Yeah, yeah.
32:32Maybe 20.
32:33Okay.
32:34We have taken a lot
32:35of our major design cues
32:37from Christine.
32:38So the flow throughout
32:39the house is still there.
32:42Ready.
32:43Okay.
32:44Okay.
32:44You guys ready?
32:45Oh, my gosh.
32:47Wow.
32:48Oh, my goodness.
32:55Okay.
32:57Oh, my goodness.
32:58Okay.
33:00It is stunning.
33:02Sometimes I feel the sun.
33:08The bed is gorgeous.
33:10The colors are gorgeous.
33:11It's great.
33:13It's like a luxury
33:14accommodation for a family.
33:15It's really, really nice.
33:20The color
33:21was so scary
33:23for me, Sarah.
33:24And now I'm up here
33:25and it's like
33:26you could see the color
33:27but you can't see
33:28the color.
33:30It just blends
33:30into the space.
33:31So, thank you.
33:33You know where
33:34it really shows up
33:34is when you see it
33:35against the yellow.
33:36How do we feel
33:37about the yellow?
33:39I love it.
33:41Yes!
33:41It's not overwhelming
33:42the space.
33:43It's like this feature
33:44of this room.
33:46If you look back here,
33:48we've lost
33:49that asymmetrical build out.
33:51So, now you've got
33:51these complementary
33:52symmetrical nooks.
33:54We really were so careful
33:56at getting
33:57the Christine vibe.
34:00The fabrics,
34:02everything was hitting
34:03clean lines
34:04of the modern build
34:05but the vintage layers
34:06in there.
34:07I think I am going
34:08to sleep up here tonight.
34:10These floors
34:11are pretty nice.
34:12I mean, it's a big
34:13improvement on our
34:14white plywood floor
34:15for sure.
34:15The pine siding
34:17material as floor
34:19worked out really well.
34:20Yep.
34:20And then the sofa
34:21day bed.
34:26I love that.
34:28Don, amazing work
34:30on building the base
34:31for this day bed.
34:33It was a lot more work
34:34than I thought
34:34but...
34:37I'm very happy
34:38with it actually.
34:39I'm very happy with it.
34:40For it sort of
34:40looked like a dorm room
34:41up here.
34:42Yeah.
34:43We've essentially
34:43been able to
34:44camouflage two
34:46twin beds
34:46into that day bed,
34:48right?
34:48We've got space
34:49for six people.
34:51We've got
34:52multiple sitting areas
34:54which we never
34:55even imagined.
34:56We've got storage
34:57for weekend guests.
34:59This is like
34:59the last space
35:01in our house.
35:02Yeah.
35:02And now it's all done.
35:04In kind of record time
35:05thanks to the lack
35:06of reno work
35:07that was required.
35:08And how do we do
35:09with budget?
35:10I think we made it
35:11in our $10,000 budget.
35:13We did.
35:13Thanks to free labor.
35:15This is amazing.
35:16This has been
35:17like really great.
35:18I'm happy.
35:19Yes.
35:19And we got you color,
35:21John.
35:21Yeah.
35:21And you got me
35:22a little splash of color
35:23which is great.
35:24I love that Christine
35:25and John trusted us
35:27with this.
35:28I can tell she loves it.
35:29And I can tell
35:30that we have
35:31pushed her a little
35:32out of her comfort zone
35:33and she's happy there.
35:35And I think
35:36that's the biggest win.
35:52Kate?
35:53I know.
35:54It's so perfect.
35:56So cute.
35:57So cute.
35:58It's time to dress
35:59both Adeline
36:00and Hattie's spaces.
36:01Thankfully,
36:02Allison did used
36:03to have a vintage
36:03furniture store
36:04so there is a lot
36:05to pull from.
36:06I love the way
36:07the black side table
36:08picks up on the black
36:09knobs.
36:10How are we
36:11feeling about the bed?
36:13Funny you should ask,
36:14Sarah.
36:16Something isn't
36:17quite right.
36:18It feels so dark.
36:19So we brought
36:19some options.
36:20So then we thought
36:20we could put
36:21a bedspread on the end.
36:23I don't think
36:24it's the bedding.
36:25I think it's the bed.
36:26Because we've got
36:27the deep, rich wall,
36:28you're not getting
36:29the impact that usually
36:31a black metal bed
36:32makes it against
36:33the lighter wall.
36:34I see what you're doing.
36:35Upholstered headboard.
36:36So if this was
36:37upholstered
36:38and I'm going to
36:39do something crazy.
36:40Yeah.
36:41And lighter.
36:41Are you all ready?
36:42Like, look at how much
36:43more ethereal.
36:44It feels so much lighter
36:45in here.
36:46They kind of all work.
36:47But we have to get on
36:49an upholstered bed
36:52ASAP.
36:529-1-1 bed.
36:55We can return
36:56this one for sure.
36:57I'll get on that bed
36:58right now.
36:58Okay.
36:59It's the old and new,
37:00old and new, right?
37:01It's classic charm,
37:02childhood joy.
37:03Feels joyful in these rooms.
37:05This is feeling
37:05more joyful.
37:06Joe.
37:08Joyful.
37:20Allison has left
37:22these beautiful
37:23little bouquets
37:24for both of her
37:25girls' rooms.
37:26A little thank you note.
37:27Thank you for everything.
37:29Love, Allison.
37:31Helping create
37:32two girls' bedrooms
37:33for our dear friend,
37:34Allison.
37:35I think it's our way
37:36of, huh?
37:38I think it's our way
37:39of showing that
37:40we're trying to rally
37:41behind her.
37:42Welcome home, ladies.
37:44How are you doing, honey?
37:46Hi.
37:48I can't believe
37:49how much Mama's
37:50holding it together.
37:52Oh, my goodness.
37:53I just can't believe
37:54we're here.
37:55The girls are so
37:56excited to see it.
37:57Holly.
37:58Yeah?
37:59You're going to
37:59stay down here
38:00while we show Adeline
38:02her big girl bedroom first.
38:04Okay.
38:04Okay?
38:05And then
38:07we're going to
38:07show you
38:08your bedroom
38:09with your mummy,
38:09okay?
38:10Okay.
38:12Check out
38:13your new room,
38:13Adeline.
38:19Oh, my gosh.
38:22Oh, my gosh.
38:23Oh, my gosh.
38:24Oh, my gosh.
38:25Never running out
38:26of love for you
38:28With me wherever
38:30I go
38:32Look at your canopy.
38:34Look at the tiles.
38:36I can't.
38:38I can't.
38:41I am in total shock.
38:43Look at what you did.
38:45But it's getting stronger now.
38:50Everything is perfect.
38:53Look at your room.
38:55Adeline,
38:56what's catching
38:57your eye the most?
38:58The bed
38:59is the most beautiful.
39:01I love it.
39:03Look at the tile.
39:06Your gramps
39:06did that for you.
39:08This is the way
39:08I brought in
39:09that blue color
39:09that you love.
39:11Oh, my gosh.
39:12It's so good.
39:15Adeline,
39:15do you remember
39:16when we were talking
39:17about the pink colors
39:17in the wallpaper?
39:18Yeah.
39:19So this is how
39:19we ended up using it.
39:21We put the paper
39:21on between
39:22the plate rail
39:24and the chair rail,
39:25which is the center part,
39:26and then we used
39:27that beautiful pink color
39:28that we picked
39:29for the rest of it.
39:30So cool.
39:33And Adeline,
39:34just in case
39:35it's overnight
39:35that you're missing
39:36sharing a bedroom
39:37with your sister,
39:37you do have a way
39:38to talk to her.
39:40Oh, there?
39:44Oh, my gosh.
39:50A little fairy door connection.
39:53That's pretty cool.
39:54I can't get over this.
39:57Well, what do you think?
39:58Should we go get Hattie?
40:01Yes, Hattie.
40:01Okay, we'll come back
40:02and get you when it's time
40:03for you to see Hattie's,
40:04too, okay?
40:07Hattie?
40:07Are you ready
40:08to see your new bedroom?
40:09Yeah.
40:10Here we go.
40:15Oh, my gosh.
40:17Word.
40:22Are you ready
40:22to see your new bedroom?
40:24Yeah.
40:29Oh, my gosh.
40:30I don't even have words.
40:36Look at your bed.
40:38I don't even...
40:41They both did the same thing.
40:42I love it.
40:43Look at what you did.
40:45It's so awesome.
40:47Oh, my gosh, Sarah.
40:48So different, too.
40:49It's so different
40:50and so good.
40:55This is a very mature bed
40:57for you.
40:58Look at this.
40:59The trim detail
41:00that your grandpa
41:03painstakingly recreated
41:05and stained to match.
41:07I think the original trim
41:08adds more, like,
41:10dimension to the room.
41:11Oh, yeah.
41:12You know exactly
41:12what you're talking about.
41:13The purple,
41:15it pulls out
41:16the yellowy undertones
41:18in the wood,
41:19so it actually makes
41:19the wood look even nicer.
41:21And this was that purple
41:22we picked together
41:22for your room.
41:23And this lamp shade,
41:24it goes well.
41:25Like, the copperness of it
41:27kind of grabs this.
41:29We found them
41:29at a vintage shop,
41:30and they're bringing
41:31that perfect shade
41:32of terracotta
41:33that just makes
41:34the purple feel
41:35a little cooler.
41:36Yeah.
41:37Really nice.
41:37And, Hattie,
41:38it's a real mix
41:39of vintage pieces
41:41with modern pieces.
41:42So we've got
41:43the style of your home
41:46that has brought
41:47this look to us,
41:48and then we've brought
41:49sort of your own style
41:50within the space.
41:51Yeah.
41:52So you've got
41:52your vanity.
41:54I'm, like,
41:54obsessed with it.
41:56Ah!
41:56It's perfect.
41:57It has so much wisdom
41:59and, like, curiosity.
42:00Oh, my gosh!
42:01This is just, like, perfect.
42:03There's actually
42:04something else over here
42:04you haven't even noticed yet.
42:06What?
42:06Behind here.
42:11Oh!
42:12Are you there, Adeline?
42:14Yeah.
42:15What do you need?
42:17Get your hand out.
42:21I can't get my hand there.
42:24I'm gonna cry.
42:25This is awesome.
42:26Okay.
42:26Bye.
42:27Do you love that?
42:29Oh, my God.
42:29I love it.
42:30Oh.
42:31So isn't it amazing
42:32that this used to be
42:33just one big space,
42:34and now it's two
42:35very different bedrooms.
42:38And we got it done on time.
42:39Yes.
42:40We are before school.
42:41You guys are ready to move in.
42:42And most importantly,
42:43we got it done on budget.
42:44But that is completely
42:45thanks to your dad.
42:47Oh, my gosh.
42:48I have been asking the girls
42:50just to trust me
42:52that I'm working really hard
42:55to get us back to
42:56what they grew up having,
42:58which was a beautiful
43:00place to call home.
43:02Look at my bed.
43:03Look at my bed.
43:06Today felt like
43:08everything I've been telling them
43:09is coming to fruition.
43:12Oh, my gosh.
43:13I love it.
43:15We've got Allison's
43:16two girls' bedrooms finished.
43:18We've got Christine and John's
43:19third floor now done.
43:21It was really fun
43:22taking on both of these
43:23sets of projects
43:24at the same time,
43:25having such different styles.
43:27So now we've got
43:29some great photography
43:29for our portfolio,
43:30for our website,
43:33and like attracts like.
43:34So let's just keep going.
