00:01This program documents actual homicide investigations.
00:05Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced,
00:07and all suspects shown are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
00:19At an apartment complex on Tulsa's south side.
00:25911, do you need police, fire, or medical?
00:28Oh, police.
00:30I'm calling the report gunfire.
00:32About eight or nine shots were fired right in front of my apartment.
00:36There were some people out here arguing, and then, uh, we heard the shots.
00:42Did you see what they looked like?
00:44No.
00:45They laid my window face. You could see the sparks from the gun.
00:50I'll let the officers know.
00:53Police and EMS race to the scene and find a man lying in some bushes.
01:02Shot dead.
01:12For homicide detectives, their chance of solving a murder is cut in half if they don't get a lead within
01:19the first 48 hours.
01:23the police.
01:28The police.
01:30The police.
01:32The police.
01:34The police.
01:35The police.
01:36Hey, Max.
01:37How's it going, man?
01:38Detective Max Ryden will lead the investigation.
01:41Do you mind showing me the body?
01:43Yeah.
01:48So he's laying over here next to some bushes.
01:52Looks like he died right there.
01:55So we got a name for our victim?
01:58Brother Jenkins.
02:0132-year-old Brandon Jenkins was born and raised in Jenks, Oklahoma.
02:07He attended Jenks High School and went on to work in construction.
02:11Brandon leaves behind his mother, brother, and sister.
02:19He's got a gunshot wound to the chest.
02:22Brandon was shot once in the upper torso.
02:26You can see where he tried to push open the door right there with the blood on the door.
02:31Blood on that, dripping for a little bit.
02:35Look empty. Nobody lives here.
02:37The first-floor apartment is unoccupied.
02:42Okay.
02:43Walk me through this.
02:46Following the bloodshed.
02:49When he was shot, he fell down at some point right in the area.
02:54Bleeding pretty heavily.
02:56The team discovers a trail of blood that leads from the parking lot.
03:00Gets back up.
03:02There's a pump right here.
03:04Like, he steadied himself.
03:06Start to head this way.
03:07To the door of the apartment, near where Brandon was found.
03:14Looks like he was trying to get away and just didn't make it.
03:19Did we find any casings in this area?
03:22No.
03:23Hmm.
03:24But there's casings over here.
03:26Okay.
03:27In the parking lot, 30 feet from Brandon's body.
03:30So there's casings here.
03:32Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam from this part.
03:35The team recovers four .32 caliber shell casings.
03:39And then ran down probably 30 more feet and shot again.
03:43And four more, 60 feet from where Brandon was found.
03:48I got shell casings.
03:49That's about it.
03:50Not a lot else.
03:51It's really early in the game, but we'll go try to find some witnesses.
04:04One hour in.
04:07Post police.
04:08Hey.
04:08Can I come in and talk to you?
04:09Yeah.
04:09Okay.
04:10The team canvases the apartment complex.
04:14Okay, thank you.
04:19This lady says basically she hears disturbance coming from that apartment.
04:24Before the shots, a neighbor heard people arguing outside the apartment upstairs from where Brandon was found.
04:33Shortly after that, they hear bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, come from here.
04:36They look out their window and then they see the muzzle flashes where those other casings would have come from.
04:40And they said they hear bam, bam, bam, bam, bam.
04:44And I go, do you know who lives it?
04:45And she says, a black female.
04:47And then a white girl, she says the lesbians.
04:52They say that there's two black females that live by the office of lesbians.
04:57And they said these two hang out in that apartment by the office.
05:01Ryden's witness said the women that live above the crime scene are good friends with a couple who live near
05:07the office.
05:12Detective Chase Calhoun spoke to the 911 caller.
05:15And she said the dead guy, he goes over there tonight, they're fist fighting, there's a disturbance.
05:22She said that the white girl, she kind of asked Glenn, if you will, says, I'm going to go get
05:26my gun.
05:28Goes into the apartment, comes out, she shoots him, and then take off.
05:34So basically, everybody says the top part was the problem.
05:37So I'm going to go knock on that.
05:52Pause, please.
06:07We need to do a search for one in that apartment.
06:09They may have threw the gun back in there before they left.
06:12Yeah.
06:14We need to secure the upstairs apartment, because our shooter came from there.
06:18So if a white girl and a black girl show up while we're securing it, grab them.
06:22When the management opens up, I should be able to find them with descriptions like that.
06:28Okay.
06:34While Detective Calhoun works on the search warrant,
06:37Is this the manager?
06:38Yeah.
06:39The manager of the complex arrives.
06:42Why is this in my car?
06:43Okay.
06:44Okay.
06:50The upstairs apartment has a lot to do with this.
06:53Who lives there?
06:55That.
06:56She gives him the name of the woman who rents the upstairs apartment.
07:00Okay, so...
07:02Her phone number?
07:03918.
07:05And her phone number.
07:06Okay.
07:07And then who lived there with her?
07:10It was supposed to be her and her daughter.
07:15Let me, uh...
07:18Ryden calls the woman who rents the upstairs apartment.
07:22Hello?
07:23This is Detective Ryden with Tulsa Police Department.
07:27The reason I'm calling is a murder happened last night.
07:30I have a dead body basically in front of your apartment down below.
07:35Dead body?
07:37I really don't know what's going on down there.
07:40I've been in Kansas City for about a week now.
07:43And I stay gone weeks at a time.
07:46I saw that your daughter lives out there.
07:48Is that correct?
07:49Yes.
07:51Because here's what I'm guessing.
07:52There's a very high likelihood that your daughter's a witness because it's your apartment.
07:56So I was hoping maybe I can ask her what happened.
08:01Excuse me.
08:01My daughter's calling her.
08:02That would be great.
08:04It's, uh, 918.
08:06Mm-hmm.
08:07She gives Ryden her daughter's phone number and name.
08:10Okay.
08:11Is she a lesbian?
08:13Yeah.
08:14Does she have a white girlfriend?
08:16Yeah.
08:17She gives them the name of her daughter's girlfriend.
08:21I'm going to break it down to you so you're on board.
08:25I believe your daughter and her are people I need to talk to.
08:29So I'm going to try to call her, but there's a good chance she's not going to talk to me
08:33without mom saying, hey, you need to call that detective right away, because if I have
08:37to find her, it makes her look in a lot worse light.
08:41Okay.
08:41Okay.
08:42I'm going to be honest.
08:43I have to get a search warrant to go in your apartment because I've been told that this
08:47all started at the apartment.
08:51Oh.
08:52If you were in Tulsa, I'd just have you come in here and let me in, but since you're in
08:55Kansas City, that-
08:56Yeah.
08:57Okay.
08:59Bye-bye.
09:01Give me one second here.
09:03Sure.
09:03Next in a row.
09:05Ryden calls the daughter.
09:08Oh, don't tell me she turned off her phone.
09:10But she doesn't pick up.
09:13Hi.
09:14Hi.
09:15You kind of heard everything.
09:16Do you know two black females that live by the office?
09:19You seen them?
09:20No.
09:22Would maintenance know?
09:24They might know.
09:25They usually see a lot more.
09:27Right, yeah.
09:27I'm sorry.
09:29It's on you right now.
09:30Okay.
09:31Thank you, ma'am.
09:35So we're going to head back to the office and see how Chase is doing with that search warrant.
09:39Don't know where the suspects are at, but we'd like to get out of the apartment as soon as
09:42possible since they might be in there.
09:56As Dee breaks.
09:57We're going back to the crime scene.
10:00We've got a search warrant for the suspect's apartment right above where Brandon's body was found.
10:07Going to be looking for evidence, gun, any bloody clothes, anything like that.
10:11And then hopefully we'll have enough.
10:13We'll start the hunt for the suspect.
10:20Hey, did they give you a key?
10:23Yep.
10:24Awesome.
10:27Go in there and make sure they're not there.
10:29And maybe they just know we've been out here the whole time and it's got to be safe.
10:41Calls the police, search warrant.
10:46Calls the police, search warrant.
11:04Calls the police.
11:14Calls the police.
11:20No one's in there, so now we're going to search for evidence.
11:23Hopefully we'll find a gun or something.
11:25Where would they have kept their gun?
11:27The team scours the apartment.
11:31Hoping beyond hope that maybe there'd be a magazine, a box of ammunition.
11:36Something.
11:37Something.
11:4130 minutes later.
11:43We're finishing that.
11:46Nothing.
11:46No gun or nothing like that.
11:50I've got warrants to sit on this apartment.
11:52Yeah.
11:53The fugitive warrants unit will keep eyes on the apartment in case the suspects return.
11:59I'm going to go find the two black lesbians that live in a complex by the office.
12:04Supposedly the suspects might be friends of theirs, so maybe the suspect went over there
12:07afterwards where they can tell me where they're at.
12:16Are they maintenance?
12:18They're maintenance?
12:20Here's the deal.
12:21I have a witness saying that there's two black females that are also lesbians that live over
12:26here somewhere that are both black.
12:29Do you know who they would be?
12:31Yeah, absolutely.
12:32I know exactly who you're talking about.
12:33I've seen over here before.
12:35He points out the women's apartment.
12:38Okay.
12:39I got a black girl and a white girl that live in that upstairs apartment.
12:43Supposedly they stay there when the real owner is out of town.
12:46Yes.
12:47You think that they went there?
12:49Ryden asks him if the women that live above the crime scene could be hiding out with the
12:54women who live near the office.
12:56I think that if anybody shot somebody, they wouldn't stay on the same property where they
13:00shot somebody.
13:00You never know.
13:01You're correct.
13:02Trust me.
13:02We don't catch the smart ones.
13:05Thanks.
13:06Have a good day.
13:15Call us, please.
13:19Hi.
13:20Hello, hello.
13:21We're homicide detectives.
13:23Is this your place?
13:26She says the women that live in the apartment are not home.
13:30What's your name?
13:32But identifies herself as the black female that lives upstairs from the crime scene.
13:37What's your name?
13:38Along with her sister.
13:40My sister?
13:41Yeah.
13:42Is it in there?
13:44Ryden asks her if her girlfriend, the alleged shooter, is there.
13:49What's she in there?
13:52Okay.
13:53So, this is a murder investigation.
13:56There's a dead guy underneath your apartment.
14:00I think you know who got killed.
14:05I don't want you and your sister to be in trouble for what other people do.
14:09But I know for a fact that you guys know what happened.
14:14And I'm not going to talk about it in the middle of the courtyard.
14:17Okay.
14:18And I need you to come down, too, because we'll work through it.
14:21Okay.
14:21Both sisters agree to talk at homicide.
14:25We'll have a chat in a more air-conditioned environment.
14:36You think your sister is going to be honest with us?
14:39Mm-hmm.
14:40Sergeant Brandon Watkins transports the sister of the woman who lives upstairs from the crime scene.
14:46I'm not going to go back to prison for somebody else's s***.
14:50Right.
14:50I just got out of prison for somebody else's s***.
14:53There you go.
14:53You know what I'm saying?
14:54So, I'm not...
14:55And I don't want my sister to get in prison either.
14:56Nope.
14:57She didn't do anything.
14:58Yeah.
15:00The situation that happened over here?
15:02Mm-hmm.
15:02It's crazy.
15:04She says she was at her sister's apartment when Brandon was killed.
15:08This is what, um...
15:10I don't know.
15:12All of a sudden, somebody just comes up and starts shooting.
15:16And we...
15:17So, like...
15:18Well, I mean, I...
15:20I didn't see...
15:22I didn't see who it was, but I know her.
15:25You know who it was?
15:27Shorty.
15:28She's my sister's friend.
15:31Shorty?
15:31Mm-hmm.
15:33That's like saying I know him by Loke.
15:35Everybody's nickname is Shorty.
15:37What does Shorty look like?
15:39Um, nurse in the...
15:41I want to say, like, five, five, and...
15:43So, she's pretty average and has the most common nickname of all time.
15:50Yeah.
15:51They call it Shorty and they call it Kay.
15:55Kay.
15:55Kay.
15:56Okay.
15:57So, I'm thinking that her real name starts with Kay.
16:00That would be...
16:01That would be a guess.
16:02Right.
16:02Yeah.
16:04You're making the right call, being honest, because, obviously, it's real serious.
16:09If we find a picture of Kay, you can ID here.
16:13Yeah.
16:24I'll see her.
16:26Kay.
16:27I'm going to try to find out who that is.
16:30Ryden runs the nickname Kay in the database.
16:32And how about Shorty?
16:38Okay.
16:40Here we go.
16:44Kay, Rona McNack.
16:58Kay, Rona, I think this is the girl you're looking for.
17:0332-year-old Kay, Rona McNack, is a mother of four.
17:07She has an outstanding warrant for a traffic violation.
17:11I think we know who it is.
17:13Kay is a black girl.
17:16Chase talked to the 911 call with the crime scene, and I got told the suspect was a white
17:21female, so all this time we've been looking for a white female.
17:24Yeah.
17:33This is Detective Ryden.
17:34Ryden calls the 911 caller, who Calhoun spoke to at the crime scene.
17:39I got a couple questions.
17:41I know that you talked to my partner, Detective Calhoun, this morning, and a girl was brought
17:48up that's a white female.
17:51Do you remember how you got that information that a white girl might be involved?
17:59She now admits she's not sure the shooter was a white female, and that it was just a
18:04rumor she heard from other neighbors.
18:15Well, I appreciate you talking to me.
18:17If I have any follow-up questions, I might call this number.
18:19Okay?
18:20Okay, yeah.
18:21Bye-bye.
18:22Have a good day.
18:25White girl, he's a bad lead.
18:27That was hearsay because that was a third hand.
18:31Sometimes we chase down leads that end up being dead ends, but just part of the investigation,
18:36and you don't lose any sleepover or fall on a lead that just didn't work out.
18:39So, I'm going to talk to this witness.
18:42Yeah.
18:49Hey.
18:51I appreciate your patience.
18:54Rioting starts with the witness Sergeant Watkins transported to homicide.
18:58I know that you've talked to Sergeant Watkins about this incident.
19:02I'm just going to get your story, okay?
19:04Tell me about your day.
19:11She says last night, she was at her sister's apartment above the crime scene.
19:15My sister's talking about meeting up with Kay.
19:20And who's Kay?
19:22It's her friend.
19:23Do you know this girl's name?
19:25I don't know how to pronounce it.
19:27I just call her Kay.
19:28Okay.
19:30So, is this Kay?
19:32Mm-hmm.
19:32Yes.
19:33Okay.
19:37And give me a little background.
19:39Are her and Kay just friends, or are they dating relationship people?
19:46Okay.
19:48And did she have a car?
19:55So, did she actually come and take you guys to a store?
19:59No.
19:59We didn't make it that hard.
20:01Okay.
20:02So, tell me about what happens next.
20:06I heard the door shut.
20:07It's a mom's door.
20:08I'm not thinking nothing.
20:10My sister, obviously, outside spoke serial abortion.
20:13And, um, I could hear some yelling.
20:17Like, you can tell it was more than, like, two people arguing.
20:21My sister was hollering my name.
20:24For help?
20:24Mm-hmm.
20:26Kay.
20:26She's leaving as I'm coming out.
20:29I heard her voice yelling.
20:31You're the wrong person.
20:33You're the wrong one.
20:35You can tell us the way she drives off.
20:36Like, she's mad.
20:39Is she yelling out of her car, or is she before she gets in the car?
20:42Yelling out of her car, because she's driving off his arm coming out.
20:45And the mother's going upstairs, and she's standing.
20:48She had, like, marks.
20:51I mean, you can tell that she just made it.
20:53And it's a scuffle of some sort, right?
20:54Like, Brandon was like, that bitch stole my phone.
20:58She stole my phone.
20:59She says Brandon, a friend of her sister's, believed Kay had stolen his phone.
21:04And he gets her mistaken with another girl.
21:06But it was actually a woman that looks like Kay, who had taken it.
21:11And he's standing down there, and he's, you know, explaining as though somebody comes
21:16up from, like, a little bush right there.
21:19Does this person sneak up behind him?
21:22I'm looking out the back, and he's looking up right there.
21:26She says Brandon was standing under her sister's balcony, with his back to the parking lot.
21:31Does he even know they're there?
21:35How close is the person to Brandon?
21:40A couple steps into the street.
21:44Did they say anything?
21:47The gunshots, it's like, going off.
21:50As soon as I heard the first one, I, like, fell to the ground.
21:53And my grandma's sister and me, like, kind of fall into the apartment.
21:58When I heard the gunshots stop, I would look up the window, and he's like, help, help.
22:02I'm like, oh, my God.
22:04And I was like, he's it.
22:06He's it.
22:18How many gunshots did you hear?
22:21Probably, like, four and even four.
22:29The person that you saw...
22:38She says the shooter had a hoodie closed tightly around their face.
22:42Like a South Park where we...
22:46Who do you think that person is now, after you've had...
23:00She says Kay lives in an apartment complex, a block from the crime scene.
23:06Okay.
23:07So from the time that you see Kay leave until the time that Brandon gets shot, would she
23:16have had time to go home and return?
23:19Yeah.
23:21Okay.
23:22Follow me.
23:23Okay.
23:24I'm going to switch places with you and your sister.
23:32Okay.
23:37I'm going to first get into just some basic background of Brandon Jenkins.
23:43How long have you known Brandon?
23:45Like one, two years now.
23:46Okay.
23:47Tell me about you and Brandon's relationship.
23:52Uh-huh.
23:54Okay.
23:56She says she dated Brandon before she met her girlfriend.
24:00Did you guys like each other?
24:04Okay.
24:05Okay.
24:05Well, now we're going to go into a timeline from yesterday until the time we met today.
24:11Yesterday morning, I woke up kind of late in my home.
24:14And at some point, is someone supposed to come pick you up and give you a ride?
24:18Yes.
24:19I call her Kay.
24:20Call her Kay.
24:21So she arrives.
24:23And then she's parked right there by my house.
24:27I'm down the stairs by this time.
24:29Here come Brandon.
24:30He grabbed me and pulled me towards him and hugged me very tight.
24:36He said, I love you.
24:37Okay.
24:40Ew.
24:42Sorry.
24:43Take a deep breath.
24:47So then what happens?
24:49Okay.
24:50She's sitting in her car.
24:51Uh-huh.
24:52Waiting on me.
24:54And he starts saying,
24:56Get my phone.
24:57Get my phone.
24:59I wish I could like really show you me talking.
25:02You can.
25:02You can stand up and ring and act it.
25:04I have no problem with that.
25:05Okay.
25:07The next thing I heard was,
25:10I'm like,
25:13And I see him in her tussling.
25:16And he drives out of her car.
25:18I mean, like,
25:18he was really,
25:19You hear me?
25:20I heard.
25:20We're fighting.
25:21Sitting young.
25:22I heard.
25:23I,
25:24I,
25:25I,
25:25I,
25:25I,
25:25I,
25:25I,
25:25I,
25:26I,
25:26I,
25:26I,
25:26I,
25:28I,
25:53She heard a car speeding out of the parking lot.
25:57Yeah.
25:58Hey,
25:58I was home or whatever.
26:00So she's left.
26:01Mm-hmm.
26:02Okay.
26:03So then what's the next thing that happens?
26:05I hear sorry,
26:06I swear to go.
26:09And then my sister took,
26:13I ran my back ass now.
26:16All I heard was somebody screaming.
26:21Was it ran?
26:23Yeah, it did.
26:26But I also heard.
26:30Yeah.
26:31So did you ever see the person that shot him?
26:34No, sir.
26:36Okay.
26:37Have you ever seen her or heard her talk about having a gun?
26:42Yes, sir.
26:44Do you know what department she does is on?
26:45Of course I do.
26:46She gives Raiden King's address and phone number.
26:50All right.
26:51Okay.
26:57I've got both witnesses saying victim was beating up suspect.
27:02Suspect leaves.
27:03Within minutes,
27:05a figure that matches this girl appears from the bushes,
27:09gets up behind him and executes him.
27:12It doesn't appear either one of our witnesses saw McNack's face
27:15whenever the trigger was pulled.
27:19Yes, we think she's a suspect.
27:21I think it's definitely enough to bring her down here.
27:24But here's the deal.
27:25Unless we get a gun on a confession, it's weak as hell.
27:28Raiden will get a search warrant for Kay's apartment.
27:32It's probable she did it.
27:33But I need a gun that's going to match what's at the scene
27:35or I need a confession.
27:38She has a warrant.
27:39At least I can talk to her.
27:40Get a feel.
27:4721 hours in.
27:49We're going to go to Kay's house and search it for a gun.
27:53With the signed search warrant in hand,
27:55the team heads to Kay's apartment.
27:58Basically, she lives right around the corner before it happened.
28:01She had plenty of time to go home, park her car, and go kill the guy.
28:17Call the police! Search warrant!
28:23Call the police! Search warrant!
28:46This is pretty bare.
28:50About as bare an apartment as you can possibly get.
28:59Came up dry.
29:00Looks like they've been moving out.
29:01There's actually very little in there.
29:03Most of what was in there was junk.
29:06Come on, canvas.
29:07The team canvases the complex,
29:09hoping for a lead on Kay's whereabouts.
29:12I'm looking for Shorty.
29:15I have not seen her since this thing yet.
29:18The neighbor says she last saw Kay yesterday afternoon.
29:25Well, let's put it this way.
29:27We just kicked her in her door.
29:29I'm a homicide detective,
29:30and she's my number one person I have to find.
29:33She's disappeared.
29:35You know where she would have went, though?
29:37We don't walk up there.
29:38Okay.
29:39She's driving a black Nissan Rogue.
29:42You have a tag?
29:43She has a pro tag.
29:44She says Kay's Nissan Rogue
29:47has paper tags from a local dealership.
29:50Was it here last night?
29:51No.
29:53She's home.
29:54Yeah.
29:55There's my number.
29:57If you see that car at all,
29:58you can call me night or day.
30:02Okay.
30:03I appreciate your time, man.
30:08I know what the car is now.
30:09It's a Nissan Rogue.
30:10Riding.
30:11We'll put out a bolo for Kay's black Nissan Rogue.
30:14So, at least we have something to narrow it down.
30:18Then.
30:19How are you doing?
30:21Did you see the apartment we went in?
30:23Yeah.
30:24When's the last time you've seen a resident there?
30:27I've seen activity over there.
30:29It wasn't the last four feet of the house.
30:32Did you hear anything last night?
30:34I heard somebody knock on the door.
30:36It was after dark.
30:38But I've got surveillance.
30:39Mm-hmm.
30:40I checked the footage.
30:41Oh, good.
30:43I appreciate you very much.
30:52The guy up there's got a camera, right?
30:54It's pointing this way.
30:55He says we could look at him.
30:57Cool.
30:57Can you handle that?
30:59I'm looking from 7.30 to 9.
31:01Yep.
31:027.30 p.m. to 9.
31:03Yep.
31:04Basically, she has the fight with the victim.
31:06She leaves in her car and comes here.
31:09I'm trying to figure out, did she go back and kill him, or did she have a guy go through
31:13it?
31:14The witnesses think it was her.
31:18I'm going to go up there with Nathan, because Nathan's got, he's probably got a thumb drive.
31:21Okay.
31:24Our potential suspect is not liked in this complex by anybody.
31:28Like, every neighbor wants to come tell on her.
31:30So, we'll see.
31:39I realize today I've eaten one donut and one-up, one cookie.
31:43As Ryden takes a break after working 22 hours straight.
31:49Give me some good news.
31:52Detective Jason White calls in with an update on the surveillance video.
31:56We're still trying to get into the system, so we're not there yet with any news, but we're trying.
32:01Okay.
32:01That's going to be huge if we see how many people come in and out during the murder time frame.
32:07Fingers crossed we'll have a problem with us.
32:09If there's something on this guy's camera, we'll get it.
32:12Thanks, Jason.
32:13I appreciate it.
32:14All right, buddy.
32:14All right, buddy.
32:14Bye.
32:16Time to go home and get some sleep.
32:33The next morning.
32:34I got the video surveillance from the neighborhood.
32:38It's a pretty good video.
32:42This is, uh, Ms. McNack's apartment.
32:44We'll see what happens.
32:51There she goes.
32:52Three minutes before the 911 call at 7.25 p.m.
32:58There's a suspect returning home right after the fight.
33:01She runs in, leaves the door open.
33:05Not intending to stay, it looked like, since we left the door wide open.
33:09Now she ran back out.
33:12More than likely got a gun.
33:15Four minutes later.
33:17Okay, now she's returning after the shots have been heard.
33:20She's running, trying to get in.
33:25So this is a minute after the shots were called in by the police.
33:32She didn't make it in.
33:33Now the entire family's running out of the house to the suspect.
33:38This is a strong timeline of what happened, that she was involved in the murder.
33:45I'm going to try to get a warrant for her arrest issue today.
33:48The next step is to find her and get her set of the story.
33:58As the first 48 ticks away.
34:00Now four or five places up here to check.
34:04Detectives in the Fugitive Warrant Squad scour the city for Kay and her black Nissan Rogue.
34:22Here it is right here back there.
34:24That's her car.
34:26Detective Brad Sharp spots the Nissan outside the home of one of Kay's relatives.
34:32We'll get turned around up here.
34:34Warren's officers will keep eyes on the house, hoping to catch Kay returning to her car.
34:41There's the back door.
34:43I have that covered.
34:52An hour later.
34:53Yes.
34:54Sharp calls Ryden with an update.
34:57So we stopped the family member who left.
35:02Warren's officers spoke with a family member of Kay's, who left the house.
35:07She gave us some information that she had dropped her car off here this afternoon.
35:13The woman said Kay dropped her car off at 1.30 p.m.
35:17She was with a sister.
35:19Then left with her sister in a blue Mercury Grand Marquis.
35:24Okay.
35:25We got some good leads to follow.
35:27Okay, thanks.
35:28Bye.
35:29As the Warrant Squad continues to search for Kay.
35:32I'll pull over.
35:34Ryden reaches out to her.
35:36I texted her a suspect and said, it's Detective Ryden with TPD.
35:40I'm sure you're aware that the police are looking for you.
35:42I'm a detective you need to contact.
35:44I'd like to get your side of the story.
35:46I know you were assaulted.
35:47Please call or text me and you can read this.
35:49Thanks, Detective Ryden.
35:51At this point, she's not going to talk to me.
35:53She's going to run.
35:55We'll see.
36:09One week later.
36:11I was at home watching the Sun's band parade and I got called in.
36:16Ms. McNack has turned herself in and wants to give a statement.
36:20Warrant's guys did a great job and tightened the circle where she couldn't hang out anymore.
36:23So she turned herself in and we'll see what she has to say.
36:31Ms. McNack?
36:32Hi.
36:32Hi, I'm Detective Ryden.
36:34I do appreciate you coming down here.
36:37I'd like to get your side of the story if you want to give it.
36:39Make sense?
36:40Okay.
36:42I know you're supposed to give those ladies a ride and then truth tells itself.
37:01They called me on the phone and tell me that they need to go send their mom and daddy some
37:07money
37:07because they were going to Wichita.
37:08Okay.
37:18She says as she parked her car at the apartment, she saw Brandon approach her friend.
37:28Then Brandon and her friend walked toward her car.
37:32I was just getting out the car and he just turned around and was like, where the my phone is?
37:38I don't know who he thought I was and I was like, real calm.
37:43I was like, I don't got your phone.
37:44I don't even know you like that.
37:46And then from there, he just started hitting me.
37:49He kept beating me all night.
37:52Where at?
37:53In my face.
37:53Face?
37:54He made me smash my hand in the door.
37:57He threw me on the ground.
37:59Got my arm cut off.
38:01And at the same time, she's trying to get him off me.
38:05Get off her.
38:06Get off her.
38:06But he studied going crazy.
38:09Had he ever had a beef with you before?
38:11No.
38:12Okay.
38:13She finally got him to get off a little bit.
38:17I turned around and I grabbed my gun and my glove before.
38:22And when I turned back around, he was rushing back to me.
38:27And then I started shooting.
38:30And he was still, like, rushing towards me.
38:34I'm like, what the heck?
38:36Because I shot, like, four shots or five shots before I even hit him.
38:42Did you shoot again?
38:44Because I have a pause in between shots.
38:46Yeah.
38:47The pause is when I'm seeing he was rushing and he came closer.
38:52And then I'm guessing that's, like, when I hit him because he didn't try to charge me no more.
38:59And then I jumped in my car and I drove off.
39:03Then where did you go?
39:04Home.
39:05And what did you do?
39:07Got my kids.
39:08And then I left.
39:10She says she and her kids drove to a relative's house.
39:13Okay, we're going to go into a little more details.
39:17This is going to sound like a weird question, but I'm going to ask you.
39:20Why did you shoot him?
39:23Because I felt a shock that I was good.
39:27He was erratic.
39:28Like, he wasn't going to stop.
39:33So there's a couple inconsistencies, and I'm going to ask you about them, and then maybe you can explain them.
39:39I have been told that you left in your car and went home for, like, not even a minute.
39:47And I see you on video, and you go in your apartment, and you leave within seconds.
39:55And that's when it appears the shooting was called in to the police.
39:59So this is my question.
40:01After the fight, did you go in the house and get the gun?
40:09Okay, that's what I want to know.
40:13Did you have to load the magazine?
40:18Now, when you went back over there, did you have to drive, or did you just walk?
40:40Did you fire the first four and then get closer to him?
40:44I'm getting closer, and he's getting closer.
40:48Okay.
40:49Do you think you shot him with the first set or the second set, if you know?
40:54Second.
40:56After that, I got him off.
40:58And then did you go back to the apartment to get the kids?
41:00Mm-hmm.
41:00So all that stuff's true.
41:01Yeah.
41:03Do you think you did make a bad decision looking back on it now?
41:07Yes.
41:09If you had to do it over, would you just call the police?
41:13Yeah.
41:15Okay.
41:16I'll be back very shortly.
41:23That's one of the better confessions I've had in homicide.
41:27She's likable.
41:28She just had a story, and then she lied, and then she told the truth.
41:31And that's exactly what the investigation revealed.
41:34I just didn't know she went and got bullets.
41:35I thought she went and got a gun, but she had to get bullets to load the gun.
41:42That was the most premeditated murder I've ever heard of, though.
41:45She basically had three minutes to decide I'm going to go kill him,
41:48and this is how I'm going to go do it.
41:50So it really can't get more first-degree murder than that.
42:02She's got four kids.
42:04I mean, it's sad that four kids' lives have changed because their mom went to go get a ride
42:08to someone trying to be a good person, and 10 minutes later, she's killed Brian Jenkins.
42:13He shouldn't have assaulted a female to begin with.
42:16She shouldn't have gone and premeditated her murder.
42:19She could have called the police.
42:20We would have been happy to arrest Brian Jenkins for beating her up.
42:23There's so many things that can have been done different in this case.
42:26You can't go pick justice in your own hand and kill someone just because you got beaten up.
42:30It's not right that she was assaulted, but it doesn't justify killing someone either.
42:36She's got a good one.
42:38She's got a good one.
42:40She's got a good one.
42:41She's got a good one.
42:41She's got a good one.
42:43She's got a good one.
42:43You
